Cheerleaders to compete at State competition

King’s Cheerleading teams competed in the World Cup Cheer Regional competition last Sunday at Logan Metro Cen-tre. All teams performed very well and as a result achieved wonderful results. Kittens recieved 1st place, Kubs recieved 1st place and Kats received 1st place. Our high school team, Cheetahs, performed for the first time in a cheerleading com-petition and performed exceptionally well, receiving third place.

Well done to all the teams. A big thanks to the parents, friends and P & F for their support and encouragement. We are now preparing for our State competition on 5 August.

Carnival DayCarnival Day is just after the holidays in Week 2 of next term. Plans are in full swing for a fantastic day. This year, because of the

building works on the playing fields, we will move the Carnival into the main part of the school using the amphitheatre for perfor-mances, bus parking area for rides and volley ball courts for stalls, games and market area. There will also be a food court area with lots of interesting food options and the PE Dept is organising a competition on the basketball courts.

The primary classes / P&F are organising side show alley games which will start at 50c. Privilege Goes With ResponsibilityScripture of the week: Whatever you do, work heartily, as for

the Lord and not for men. Galatians 6:8

Jesus told a parable about a landowner who returned to find two stewards. One had been responsible and the other hadn’t been. The landowner said to the responsible stewards, “You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.” Jesus was teaching his disciples that those who are re-sponsible would receive more.

This important principle that privilege and responsibility go together is the primary way that parents should discipline their children. Too often parents give privileges to children who are not responsible enough to handle them. Just because a child is fourteen years old doesn’t mean that he is mature enough to go to a friend’s house without supervision. Don’t give privileges based on age, use responsibility as a guide instead.

Privileges are things like being home alone, having an email account, carrying a mobile phone, going to the mall with friends or being able to stay up later. Children want privileges and of-ten pressure their parents to give them. You can use privileges to teach responsibility. “Before I can give you access to the Internet, I have to see that you can take a stand for righteousness, be hon-est under pressure, and do the right thing when no one is watch-ing.” Or, “I’d like to allow you to stay up later but it means that you have to demonstrate a good attitude during the day. I’m not sure we’re there yet.” Responsibility can be demonstrated in children in many ways and honour is at the heart of it. Cleaning up after a snack, taking initiative to help clear the table, being honest in a difficult situation, responding to correction without blaming an offense on someone else, and handling disappointment with a good attitude are all ways that children can demonstrate respon-sibility.

Strategy for the week: The V of love is the system whereby a child’s responsibilities and freedoms widen as they get older. Peer pressure often forces these freedoms too early. Don’t be pushed. Ensure that your child is exhibiting the right behaviours before al-lowing these freedoms. Open, honest discussions about what is ex-pected and what God expects for our good will help your child to understand and develop the right qualities. Consequences of losing those privileges should also be very consistent.

giving unto the Lord, offer it at your own will.” - Leviticus 22:29 KJVOne day, while paying my electric bill, I decided to thank the

company for the service they were providing me. “Thanks for my electricity,” I said, “It’s really quite a bargain for all the benefits I receive.” “What!” said the lady behind the counter, in amazement, “That’s the first time anyone has ever thanked us. All I ever hear around here are complaints.”

It’s a challenge to grow up with a thankful heart. From an early age we are exposed to a culture of complainers, gripers, grum-blers, and critics. We complain about the weather, traffic, food, work, neighbours, bills, the government, church, and life in gen-eral. Worst of all, we are ungrateful toward God. It would be hard to count the number of complaints and criticisms that are daily spoken before Him and against Him. How can we, who have re-ceived so much, be thankful for so little?

One of the great indicators of true spirituality is not measured by how many times we go to church, how big our Bibles are, or how long we pray, but it is measured by the level of gratitude that is in our hearts. When we are ungrateful, the heart of God is saddened, the Holy Spirit is grieved, and the joy of the Lord is quenched within us.

Being thankful sweetens you, grumbling sours you; being thankful brings sunshine to your countenance, being ungrateful casts a shadow; being thankful brings a melody to your words, criticism makes you sound like a clanging cymbal; being thankful keeps your feet on the pathway of celebration, complaint takes you down the road of despair.

When our hearts are filled with gratefulness we may feel like our thanksgiving is inadequate, but we can be certain that our thanksgiving is always appropriate. It will gladden the heart of God to hear your heartfelt thanks being freely offered to Him to-day.

The Holy Spirit can tell you what words to say to your children. He can help you to be sensitive to the needs of your family. In practical areas He is always willing to lead and guide you if you will let Him!

I once had a bad case of gout. I prayed, I stood on the Word, I confessed the healing scriptures until I was blue in the face but all to no avail. Eventually, whilst in much pain, I prayed and asked the Lord what I must do. He told me to stop eating so much red meat! What a practical God we serve!

The Holy Spirit is there to lead and guide you into all truth - be sensitive to His voice.

Instrumental Music Wind Concert

On Monday night students in the Instrumental Music Wind pro-gram performed in a concert, demonstrating everything they’ve been working hard on this semester. The students all played brilliantly with musicality and skill. The program included some well-known pieces from movies, such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Merry Poppins, as well as a popular song by Coldplay. It was also a great opportunity for the high school students to perform a very difficult piece, in a complex time signature, called Mars. One of the most impressive items of the evening was the Premier performance of the Beginner Band’s own song: Detention, Maths, Science and Geography, written and performed by the band’s bass and percussion section, independently led by year 6 stu-dent Flynn Ward on drums and vocals. Other highlights included the Flute Ensemble playing Music of the Night from Phantom of the Opera and a performance combining the Intermediate and high school bands into one, big, band, playing a favourite in the concert band scene: Bunyip Blues. Congratulations to all the per-formers, you did a wonderful job.

Strings ConcertOn Tuesday 19th June, parents and friends had the opportu-

nity to experience the skills and talents of the Strings students. Nine groups performed, ranging from Year 4 beginners through to the 25-member King’s String Orchestra. The Beginner Cel-los delighted the audience with two pieces “Stew Pot Hop” and “Twisted”, in which they added some choreography, spinning their instruments during the rests. Other small groups beautifully performed a variety of music including folk songs, dances and classics by Beethoven and Mozart.

The evening marked the first performance of the “Primary String Ensemble” a group comprised mostly of Year 5 students (and others in their second year of learning). These students have worked hard on pieces in three parts for violins and cello, “Pluck-ers” and “White Cliffs”. “Pluckers” was especially effective with the instruments being plucked (“Pizzicato”) rather than played with the bow.

The concert cumulated with the String Orchestra’s rendition of “Venezia”, a three-movement composition in the style of Vivaldi. The lively tempos, precise and often complex rhythms and rapid bowing in the first and third movements made for some thrilling moments. Of particular note was the sweet solo playing in the slow movement by violinists Rebecca Skurrie and Chloe Duncan-son. Finally a romp through “Pirates of the Caribbean” topped off a night of fine music-making. Congratulations to the students for all their hard work in preparation and families for their support and encouragement.

84th Annual Mudgeeraba Agricultural Show23rd and 24th June 2012

This Saturday 23 June a number of King’s students will be per-forming at the Mudgeeraba Show. Three groups will be show-cased at the stage area: the high school band, primary cheerdanc-ers and Jennifer Miller’s dancers.

Altogether there will be approximately 80 students represent-ing our college. They will perform between 3:15pm and 3:45pm. It would be very encouraging to them to have as many people as possible in the crowd. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the Performing Arts stream of our college. We look forward to seeing many people there.

The show is on just in time for the school holidays. Heaps of free entertainment, spectacular night program with massive fireworks display. Over 250 trade, community and heritage sites. Thrilling rides and side show alley. Trick rider, FMX Demos, Krono-saurs Korner, dog agility demos and heaps more.

So start the holidays with fun and excitement and come to the Mudgeeraba Show.

June P&F Meeting Update

Carnival Day Planning is well under way for the carnival. A meeting of par-

ent coordinators was held to discuss games stalls. If you would like to assist with your year’s stall, please contact your parent coordinator. We are currently seeking cent auction items, please email the P&F if you have any auction items or con-tacts. We encourage people to get their ride tickets online.

Carparking Update/Pick Up ZoneThere is continuing consultation with Main Roads in an

effort to minimise traffic issues. Keep an eye out for major changes to the main carpark for Term 3.

We remind parents that there is a 2 minute stoppage time in the pick up zone. If your child is not at pick up within 2 min-utes we ask that you continue on and either rejoin the line or try and locate a car park. It is imperative for the drop off zone to work that it continues moving.

We welcome any input into this car parking issue – please email the P&F with any great ideas.

Sport NewsThe King’s Rugby Club End of Season Function – Thursday 14/6

Last Thursday evening more than one hundred and sixty mem-bers of the King’s community, including members of the board, staff, coaches, parents, players and supporters attended the inau-gural end of season rugby function held in the Barista Cafe. The evening was a time of celebration of the past season, an oppor-tunity for all members of the rugby community to socialise, and coincided with the launch of The King’s Rugby Club.

At the start of the evening the King’s cheerleaders created a great sporting atmosphere with their cheers and exuberance. During the evening, Mr Roscoe Deacon, the Rugby Coordinator and First XV coach, reflected on the achievements of all the teams and spoke about the important role rugby plays in forming our boys’ characters. He congratulated the First XV players for mak-ing history, in that the team is the first King’s First XV to achieve 3rd place in the Associated Private Schools (APS) competition. The Year 4 players were also congratulated, and received certifi-cates, for achieving 1st place in the APS cup.

After Mr Deacon’s address, the First XV captain, Matthew Klu-ver, addressed everyone and, speaking from the heart, his mo-tivational words made a lasting impression on all, especially the junior boys, and showed why he has been such an inspirational leader on and off the field.

The King’s Rugby Club committee would like to extend a word of thanks to Angela Hicks and the King’s cheerleaders who gave of their time to support the rugby boys. We also wish to thank everyone who attended the function for the part they played in making the evening so successful. We look forward to next year and seeing King’s rugby grow from strength to strength.

Sport NewsKeegan battles it out in the USA

Keegan Palmer, Year 4, was selected by world industries as one of the best under 12 bowl skaters in Australia! Sam Sutton from NSW was selected as one of the best in street division!

Two groms went to represent Australia! This was the first time in the 10 years that kids from another country were invited to compete against the qualified best under 12 year old skaters in the USA! Talk about fierce competition!!!!

Keegan did Australia very proud!! Results - In the Vert contest on the 13ft

ramp Keegan received 3rd place. Mini ramp contest at 3rd lair in Minneapolis he made the finals and ended in 6th place in interme-diate.

In bowl skating, Keegan’s passion, he made the final in an intense battle against USA’s incredible skaters! And in the final he pulled out all the stops and performed bril-liantly under pressure and placed 3rd in the USA intermediate!!!

Billy O’Donnell, Year 11, has been selected in the AFL Under 16s Qld Squad. He goes to Sydney 7 July – 14 July to compete.
