Stars Fell on AlabamaCOLONIE - Special Presentation by the The Historical Society Of The Town Of Colonie by Thomas O. Kelly II. Stars Fell on Alabama: NY National Guard, 27th Div. 1940-41. Sunday, October 20, 2013 - 2:00 pm. William K. Sanford (Colonie) Town Library, 629 Albany Shaker Road. Astronomy furnished the inspiration for the distinctive shoulder patch insignia of the Twenty-seventh Division, American Expeditionary Forces, who adopted Orion, the Seven Sisters of the Pleiades--as a part of its finished design. On a circled background of jet black appeared these seven stars in red, with the monogram NYD (New York Division) likewise in red. The black stands for iron and the red for the blood. An interesting coincidence lies in this design. The Orion corresponds with the name O’Ryan, the 27th Division Commander Maj. Gen. John F.
