CAPITAL DISTRICT - This summer, share the beauty of your community with a Fresh Air child while enjoy-ing the pure joys of summer in your own backyard! Thou-sands of volunteer host fam-ilies in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada open

their hearts and homes to New York City children from low-income communities through The Fresh Air Fund’s Volunteer Host Family pro-gram. The Fresh Air Fund, an independent, not-for-profit agency, has provided free summer experiences to more than 1.8 million New York City children from low-

income communities since 1877. Host families open their homes to children who might not otherwise be able to enjoy a summer away from New York City. Fresh Air children experience sim-ple pleasures like running barefoot through the grass, swimming in a cool lake, and gazing at star-filled skies.

Through the eyes of Fresh Air children, families often re-discover the beauty of their own communities. For more information on how you can make summer special for a Fresh Air child, contact Ten-niel Hansen at 518-441-4407 or visit The Fresh Air Fund at www.freshair.org.

Maxamillion is one great hound. He is so happy, he prances like a pony and you would never guess he is eight years young. He loves to roll on the ground and get belly rubs

(at the same time, if possible). Max is so wonderful, I call him Max-a-Billion because a million is not enough!

If you have room in your heart for a handsome hound, Max is your man!

Duke walks well on the leash and seems to be house-trained. He is a happy, affectionate dog who would love to be

adopted. Come to the shelter and take a look at Duke.

WHEELCHAIR VAN FUNDRAISER FOR

KEITH WHITECAPITAL DISTRICT - Keith White JR was diagnose with Hydrocephalus when he was born. Keith has overcome many obstacles in his life. Keith’s disability is related to a serious brain malformation that left him with intellectual disabilities such as cerebral palsy, vision and hearing concerns, epilepsy and fre-quent aspiration pneumo-nia, temperature regularity, seizure disorder, frequent suctioning, shunt in place and the loss of movement. He frequently requires home-based IV antibiotic treatment every 6 hours for respiratory infections, he is also on supplemental Oxy-gen therapy via nasal can-nula 24/7. Keith does not attend a program or school due to his disability, He is in need of a wheelchair van to improve the quality of care and transportation to and from the Doctors and hos-pital. We currently lift him in and out of the car when we go out to the Dr’s, hos-pital or any outings. Keith’s current weight is 88 lbs, and his chair that we lift in and out of the car is 120 lbs. We have 2 other children, a boy who is 10 and a girl who is 16, they help us out a lot when it comes to their brother, sometimes we have to take one of them with us on Keith’s DR apt to help with suctioning him when he needs it or help carry his Oxygen into the apt. We try to make their lives as normal as possible with activities and everyday life, but it’s not easy for any of us. Keith is al-ways keeping us on our toes, we thank the lord and we cherish every day we have to spend with him. So we are asking everyone to share our story and help us with our fundraiser for a wheelchair van. Thank you we hope to see everyone at the Ben-efi t. On August 24th. After a long winter of snow and ice, many people are ready for the warmth and sunshine synonymous with spring. But dirty windows can block that sunshine from fi nding its way into a home. Washing windows can be quite an undertaking, particularly in those homes with many windows on mul-tiple levels. However, there are several time-saving tips available that can cut the work considerably.

* Save window washing for a cloudy day. Otherwise, the warmth and sunlight may dry the cleaning solution too quickly and you will be left with streaks on your win-dows.

* Vacuum windowsills and tracks fi rst to remove a good deal of dust and debris. This

will reduce the amount of dirt you smear onto the win-dows while cleaning them.

* Use a combination of a sponge soaked in cleaning solution and a squeegee to get really clean windows. The squeegee helps to pre-vent streaks and cut down on the time it takes the win-dows to dry, all the while helping the windows to sparkle.

* Window screens may be the culprit behind dingy windows. Hose down the screens with water to clean them, using a mild cleaning solution if water is ineff ec-tive.

* Working with a partner can make the task go much more quickly. One person can clean the exteriors of the windows while the other does the interiors.

* A mild dishwashing liq-uid diluted in water can cut through dirt and grime. For stubborn dirt, wash win-dows with diluted ammonia or vinegar.

* Use a glass-cleaning tool to clean hard-to-reach win-dows. A telescoping clean-ing tool and pad can make it safer to reach windows that are high up.

THE BASICS OF CLEANING

WINDOWS

If there is a custom tile or specifi c design that you really like that is not within your budget for the entire kitchen or bath-room, think about using it as an accent instead. Rely on less expensive tiles for much of the room, then sprinkle in the accent tiles for the style you want. The fi nished project will look high-end, but you will likely have stayed within your budget. You also can save money by shopping at a reuse center or one that sells remnants and leftover materials from larger jobs. For example, it’s possible to fi nd a piece of marble or granite that would fi t perfectly as a countertop in a bathroom.

OFFER ENDS JULY 4TH

(MS) -- Attention, all green thumbs -- and the bodies attached to them: It’s nearly time to get down and dirty in the garden.

Whether you’re transform-ing your backyard into an award winner or just trimming the lawn, the CSA Group, a leading certifi cation and test-ing organization, asks that you remember the following safety tips:

Yard Work

* Always ensure that products such as elec-tric lawnmowers, barbecues, power tools, ladders, deco-rative lights, extension cords and safety apparel carry the mark of a recognized certifi -cation organization, such as CSA Group.

* Read the manufacturer’s operating instructions and use products only as intend-ed.

* Wear protective eye and footwear (on eyes and feet, respectively).

* What’s that you say? Wear hearing protection when operating loud machinery, vehicles or tools.

Power Lawnmowers

* Know your mower and

always follow the manufac-turer’s instructions.

* Look for these safety fea-tures: a rear guard to protect your hands and feet from rotating blades; a “deadman”

control that stops the mower when you release the handle; and an “up-stop” fea-ture to prevent the handle from kicking up when the mower hits an obstacle.

* Clear the lawn of sticks, stones, wire, toys and other ob-jects (including that screwdriver you lost

in the grass last summer), as they could get caught in the machine or fl ung by the blades.

* Wear clothing that pro-vides some protection, in-cluding long pants, a shirt

RECOGNIZE SAFETY HAZARDS DURING YARD WORK

with sleeves and fi rmly-tied shoes with non-slip soles and hard toes.

* Never cut the grass when it’s damp or wet, or when there is rain or lightning. Wet conditions greatly increase the risk that you will slip, suf-fer electric shock or clog the mower.

* Always mow in daylight, never at twilight or in the dark. Keep your eyes on

the lawn and look ahead (at least three feet) for debris.

* Shut off , unplug and en-gage your mower’s safety devices before removing clogged grass clippings.

* Shut off the mower imme-diately if you hit an object. Check for damage and do not restart it unless you’re sure it’s safe to do so.

* As suggested by its name,

always push rather than pull a push mower.

* All extension cords should be untangled, in good re-pair, have a three-prong plug rated for outdoor use and be of the recommended gauge for the load.

A lush, green lawn is cov-eted by many current and would-be homeowners. Not only can a beautiful land-scape make a home feel more welcoming, but it also increases the resale value of a property.

Frequent wa-tering, proper fertilization, pest manage-ment, and mowing are all essential components of lawn main-tenance. But there is more to those beautiful blades of grass than just aesthetic ap-peal. The following are some interesting facts about grass that even the most devoted lawn enthusiasts might be surprised to learn.

* Grass is de ned as any plant of the family Gra-mineae, a group of vascular plants that grow across the globe.

* There are as many as 10,000 variet-ies of grass in the world. These range from grass to rice to wheat to bamboo.

* Many grasses are annual or

perennial herbs with brous roots and rhizomes.

* Grass can withstand many di erent climates and has been discovered at the North Pole and at the equa-tor.

* Twenty percent of Earth’s vegetation is comprised of

FAST FACTS ABOUT GRASS

grass.

* Grasses have been trans-formed into paper and home decor items. Bamboo, which is a type of grass, is frequent-

ly used for ooring because it is durable and sustainable.

* Grass is mostly comprised of water, which makes up about 80 percent of grass

and 90 percent of grass clip-pings.

* A typical lawn will have about six grass plants per square inch. Some lawns

may have millions of grass plants.

* The average lawn releases enough oxygen to sustain four families of four.

We Will Go Out On A Limb For You!

The backyard has become a go-to destination for warm weather recreation. As the “staycation” has grown in popularity, more e ort has been put forth in making the backyard a place where all members of the house-hold can enjoy themselves. That means merging inter-ests into one space. A pool may be competing for acre-age along with a decorative patch of lawn. Some home-owners wonder if lawns and pools can be successful alongside each other.

Many question if chlorinat-ed pool water poses any ill e ects on the grass in the backyard. In addition to splash-out of water during fun times in the pool, water also will be tracked across the lawn from children and adults exiting the pool or will ood the grass when it is nec-essary to clean and “backwash” the lter. Will you be left with a dried-out patch of chlorine-burnt lawn? Probably not.

Healthy chlorine levels in a pool are kept so that the pool water is generally on par with the chlorine lev-els contained in regular tap water. You wouldn’t hesitate

turning on the hose to water your lawn, so you shouldn’t be overly concerned about pool water splashing out of the pool, particularly if you are stringent about main-

taining the proper pH levels and chlorine levels. Also, soil can withstand chlorine at high acid levels and is pretty resilient about self-correcting. Furthermore,

grass blades are selective about which nutrients they absorb, so excess chlorine likely will not penetrate the grass blades.

Chlorine also dissipates in the sun. Therefore, while the levels may be elevated upon just hitting the grass, over a short while the chlo-rine will essentially be used up and pose no additional threat to the surrounding lawn.

Some people have actually said that wa-tering your lawn with pool water can be an eco-friendly way of curbing water usage. Therefore, it may be safely used on lawns and most owering

plants. It is unadvisable to water vegetable gardens with pool water because of any trace levels of other chemicals that may be found in the pool water.

Homeowners still con-

cerned about exposing

their lawns to pool water

can create a bu er zone

around the pool. Inground

pools are traditionally bor-

dered by concrete or patio

blocks. Place stone or mulch

around the perimeter of an

above-ground pool to catch

any splashes and to create

a barrier between the pool

and the lawn. Also, direct

backwashed water through

a long tube and have it ow

it to an area away from the

lawn.

Pool owners who want to

have vibrant grass likely

don’t need to worry about

chlorine damaging their

lawns. In fact, the lawns may

 ourish with the extra wa-

tering.

‘Tis the season for barbe-cues, picnics and outdoor entertaining. As the weath-er warms, people take to the outdoors in droves, eager to enjoy the sunshine and the pleasant temperatures. Some may argue that grills, with their charcoal and natu-ral gas heating components sending carbon gases into the air, are bad for the envi-ronment. But the disposable plastic containers, dishes and cutlery that are staples of outdoor entertaining may be more harmful to the

environment. In addition to the energy expended and the chemicals used to produce plastic products, disposable items often end up in storm drains, and from those drains they wash into waterways and oceans, where pieces of the plastic are consumed by fi sh and other aquatic animals. If the plastic does not injure or kill the fi sh, it may end up con-taminating the animal, pass-ing on dangerous chemicals if that fi sh later becomes a food source. Many plastics

marked as #1 or #7 can be recycled and made into new items, even fabrics. Even plastic products that cannot be recycled can be reused. Bring picnic and barbecue supplies home to wash and use again. To cut down on excess in landfi lls, limit use of disposable serviceware. While less convenient, cloth napkins, reusable plates, sil-verware, and cups are better for the environment. Desig-nate a special set of items for outdoor use that can be used again and again.

DID YOU KNOW?

To reduce these costs, the ex-perts at the Luxaire® brand of heating and air conditioning recommend the following:

• Adjust your thermostat. By raising your thermostat just a few degrees in mild tem-peratures and lowering it in cooler temperatures, you can help your heating and cool-ing system work less to main-tain a comfortable indoor temperature. Programming your thermostat to accom-modate your family’s time away from home and sleep-ing schedules will also help to ensure that your system is operating only when you need it.

• Install a dehumidifi er. Hu-midity can make the air feel hotter and heavier in warm

weather. By removing the humidity, the air will feel drier and cooler and you will be able to rely less heavily on your heating and cooling system to make the air com-fortable.

• Perform regular mainte-nance. Clean air fi lters, seal any duct leaks and make sure the areas around your system are clear of obstructions. Ac-cording to the EPA, improper insulation can reduce system effi ciency by up to 30 per-cent.

• Have your existing home comfort system inspected and serviced by a qualifi ed technician. The technician will make sure your system is working properly and at peak effi ciency. A knowledgeable

technician will also be able to recommend a new, more effi cient replacement system, such as ENERGY STAR®–quali-fi ed equipment that can help you save money on energy bills.

• Learn more. To learn more about effi cient products that can help you save money and energy, or to fi nd a heating and cooling contractor, visit www.luxaire.com.

According to the Depart-ment of Energy, heating and cooling accounts for about 56 percent of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, mak-ing it the largest energy ex-pense for most homes.

Weed growth in a garden cannot only prove unsightly, but also ultimately harmful to plants and vegetables. When weeds appear in a garden, they have already begun to steal nutrients

and water from surround-ing plants, and if allowed to grow tall, they can also block sunlight from reaching the plants.

Unfortunately, weeds can

be resilient, and there is no way to guarantee they won’t grow. But gardeners can take several steps to limit the growth of weeds so the plants in their gardens can grow strong.

* Work the soil regularly. When weed roots are re-moved from the soil, weeds die. But just because you hoed or tilled the soil last month does not mean new weeds won’t grow in and start robbing your plants of essential nutrients and minerals this month. The garden should be cultivated regularly, and you should pay particular attention to the soil after the garden has been watered. If weeds are allowed to go to seed, the garden can quickly be overwhelmed by them, as young weeds tend to grow in quickly and a little water might be all they need to sprout. So make a point to routinely cultivate the soil with a hoe or tiller, being careful when working on soil around growing plants.

* Lay down black plastic. Some gardeners may want to avoid laying black plastic down in their gardens for fear that such a weed deter-rent robs the garden of its natural beauty. While that might be true, the black plastic also robs many weeds of their ability to grow in. Some weeds may be espe-cially stubborn and grow in under the plastic, forcing their way through the holes cut into the plastic for the plants to grow through. But laying black plastic covering

over the garden before it’s planted is often an eff ective way to limit weed growth.

* Lay mulch in vegetable gardens. Mulch can serve multiple benefi ts in a gar-den. Many people fi nd mulch aesthetically appeal-ing, but mulch serves more practical purposes as well. Mulch made of organic ma-terials, such as bark chips or grass clippings, is often too heavy for weeds to push through, making it diffi cult, if not impossible, for weeds to sprout in the garden. But mulch also conserves mois-ture in the soil, strengthen-ing plant roots as a result. Stronger roots can lead to a healthier garden.

* Cut down on plants’ el-bow room. The more space between plants, the more room weeds have to grow.

So decreasing the space be-

tween plants can limit weed

growth. But spacing plants

too closely together can

make it diffi cult for vegeta-

bles to grow in as well. Spac-

ing recommendations will

likely be included on pack-

aging when buying seeds,

but reducing those recom-

mendations by an inch or

two may allow the plants to

grow in strong while limiting

weed growth at the same

time.

Garden weeds can put plants

in jeopardy and rob gardens

of their beauty. But there are

a handful of ways gardeners

can limit weed growth with-

out harming their plants.

Rainwater collection is a way to conserve water that can be adopted by both pri-vate homeowners and busi-nesses. Harvesting water during peak times of pre-cipitation ensures water will be on hand during drought or when water restrictions are implemented. Making use of rainwater reduces reliance on underground wells or municipal water systems. Harvesting rain-water also can help prevent fl ooding and soil erosion.

The average homeowner can collect thousands of gallons of rainwater each year. To learn just how much water can be harvested, as well as how many natural resources can be produced

from that rain, visit www.save-the-rain.com, where men and women can cal-culate their rain collection potential by geographic lo-cation and average rainfall. Afterward, homeowners may be inclined to estab-lish their own rainwater harvesting systems. Here is how to get started.

* Determine your roofi ng material. Potable water can be harvested from homes with sheet metal or slate roofi ng. Clay or adobe tiles also may be acceptable. As-phalt, wood shingles and tar roofs may leach toxic chemicals into the water, making it unsafe for drink-ing. This rainwater may only be collected to use for irri-

gation methods or washing cars and outdoor items.

* Check gutter materials. Some gutters are made with lead soldering components. A commercial lead swab test can help you determine if there is lead present in your gutters. At a later time you can choose to replace the gutters if you desire a potable supply of water.

* Invest in a collection tank or barrel. A number of man-ufacturers off er prefabricat-ed rain collection systems complete with collection barrels. Otherwise, you can use your own barrel or tank to house the collected wa-ter. Ensure it is large enough to handle the volume of wa-ter collected.

* Purchase and install leaf guards. If your home is sur-rounded by many trees, you probably accumulate leaf and tree debris in your home gutters and down-spouts. Leaf guards will help keep the gutters clear and increase water fl ow through the water collec-tion system.

* Create a water collection area. A portion of the gutter system should be removed so that it connects to the collection barrel or tank. As the rain falls, it will run

down the roof and into the gutters before it streams into the downspouts. The downspout connected to the tank will deposit the

water directly inside. Filters can be installed to help block the fl ow of debris.

* Outfi t the tank for over-fl ow and water usage. A spigot and hose connection makes it easy to use the col-

lected water for outdoor purposes. Many rainwater collection systems are de-signed with an overfl ow safeguard that will prevent

the water from backing up through the system. It will divert the rainwater back out of the downspout when the barrel or tank is full.

A rainwater collection sys-tem harnesses a natural

source of water to be used for gardens and other out-door purposes. This water doesn’t contain chlorine or other additives, making it

relatively clean and safe to use. Homeowners should check to see if a permit is necessary to install a rain-water collection system and then begin gathering water for various uses.

Changing the Quality of Your Life

Tis the season for making changes in and around the home. The arrival of warmer weather renews homeown-ers’ vigor for various home improvement projects, and

many have grand plans for interior and exterior renova-tions as they prep their living spaces for comfort, beauty and entertaining opportuni-ties. While there are many

worthy projects to pursue, adding outdoor lighting to a home can help increase its value and make the home saf-er and more attractive in the evening hours.

According to the American Lighting Association, with a few updates to outside light-ing, families can make even better use of their homes at night. Adding outdoor light-ing is easier and less expensive than many homeowners may know, allowing them to trans-form an existing patio, deck or pool area into an enjoyable nighttime retreat. Pool parties, dinners on the patio or barbe-cues with neighbors become even more memorable when outdoor lighting is added or improved. But homeowners who want to install or upgrade their outdoor lighting should consider the following tips, courtesy of ALA.

* Improve navigation. Light-ing is typically layered into a room or outdoor space in three ways: overhead, task and ambient. Even outdoors, where there are no typi-cal boundaries and borders, those three layers are neces-sary. Outdoor overhead light-ing should improve visibility on steps, paths and walking surfaces, especially where there’s a bend or an intersec-tion. Task lighting can be used around cooking or gardening

areas. Ambient light will cast a comforting glow around any outdoor space.

* Enhance security. To improve visibility and security, com-bine a motion detector with a sconce to illuminate dark cor-ners or entryways. Be sure to aim lights away from the door to improve visibility. Lanterns on either side of the door can give a home a warm, welcom-ing appearance and improve the safety of entryways.

* Create outdoor rooms. Out-door lighting at the borders of a space is a great way to create barriers, both vertically and horizontally. Lights in a tree create something akin to a chandelier hung in the middle of the sky, and even accent lights in the general area of the edge of a patio, deck or porch will shine across the space and provide enough of a comfort level for people to understand where things are.

* Reduce glare. Outdoor light-ing that casts a glare can be blinding, as can light that’s too bright. Lighting along paths should be cast downward, with fi xtures that are hooded. A variety of lighting options will create layers, allowing you

to add or subtract as neces-sary. Exterior-safe dimmers also can provide fl exible con-trol over the level of light, as can movable fi xtures added to a patio or porch.

* Add decorative elements. Just as arbors, pergolas, patios and other outdoor elements help to enhance the style of an outdoor space, so, too, can lighting contribute to a well-designed landscape. Lighting should play up decorative features of a yard and add the ambience that homeowners desire. Step lights make pas-sage safe while also highlight-ing molding or trim details. An outdoor chandelier can make for a wonderful accent dur-ing dinnertime on the deck or under a pergola. Patio lights provide atmosphere as well as illumination for cooking outside.

* Enhance views from inside. Outdoor lighting can make the view from inside pleasant and enjoyable. Use a variety of lights, including spotlights on trees, lights dotted along pathways and accent lights on unique landscape features, to create an idyllic landscape vis-ible from inside the home.
