HELP KEEP A VOLUNTEER WARM THIS

WINTERCAPITAL DISTRICT - The USS SLATER has launched their 15th Annual Winter Fund Drive. It’s time to “help keep a volunteer warm this win-ter.” According to Chairman Bartley “BJ” Costello, “The Winter Fund Drive was con-ceived back in 1998. After the first season of public visi-tation, we realized that we did not have enough cash to get us through the win-ter. When we closed for the season, our income stream ceased, but our expenses continued. It was a case of making lemonade out of lemons. We reached out to our members and asked them each to donate $100 to help get us through the winter. The response was overwhelming. Their dona-tions got us through that first winter and then some. We’ve continued the drive every year since.” The appeal enables the volunteers to keep working on USS SLAT-ER’s restoration throughout the winter months. It has become an important part of the Museum’s operating fund. USS SLATER is sup-ported by a network of 3,000 members in all 50 states, in-cluding Navy veterans, their families, and history-minded friends. In 2013 the only public funding the Museum received was a $1000 City of Albany Arts Grant to support public programming. Private donations provide half of the Museum’s operating budget. The efforts of the SLATER’s volunteers were rewarded in 2012 when the ship was designated a National His-toric Landmark and in 2013 the Museum received a New York State preservation award. Volunteers donate an average of 16,000 hours a year to the project. Winter Fund donors are welcome at

any level. Visit the website at www.ussslater.org for more information. Museum mem-berships begin at $25. LOW INCOME TAXPAYER CLINIC AT LEGAL AID SOCIETY OF

NORTHEASTERN NEW YORK CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a refund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your filing status and number of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple filing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

CALLING ALL MENTORS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs pro-vide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a men-tor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides support and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to de-velop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless possibilities while empow-ering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenendehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly ba-sis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email [email protected].

PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. Oh, Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal, you who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. The person must say this prayer 3 consecutive days, after 3 days the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. Thank you for favor received. M.J.K.

Trees serve many purposes for a landscape, providing shade and habitats for birds and other animals and serving as natural blinds between two homes. Trees are often beautiful elements of a natural landscape, adding aesthetic appeal to a property or even an entire community. But there are times when a tree must be removed, an action that, in many instances, requires the services of a professional tree service.

A tree with roots invading the foundation of a home or infringing on a patio or walkway can become a safety hazard. Other trees may cast shade where a pool is planned or cause dis-agreements between neighbors when the tree straddles a property line. These are instances when tree removal will be necessary, and a reputable service can advise as to the best meth-ods for ridding the property of the troublesome tree.

Homeowners will need to do a bit of planning and research to remove trees safely and secure-ly. It is best to contact a variety of diff erent tree removal services and compare their off erings and prices. The cost of a tree removal will vary depending on various factors, including the height of the tree, its width, the number of branches it has, its location on a property and the proximity of that location to potential hazards like power lines. Tree removal may range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand.

When a tree is being removed, most of the branches will be removed to make the tree more manageable. Trees are rarely chopped at the base and allowed to fall, as there simply isn’t enough room to safely take this approach. Sections of the tree will be cut, roped off and slowly lowered. A climber will scale the tree or use a cherry picker machine to reach the top of the tree to facilitate the process.

The pieces of the tree will be loaded into a wood-chipper for grinding before they are hauled away. Larger, heavier portions of the stumps may need to be moved later on with machinery. Hauling trees off the property may cost extra, so it is important that homeowners read their contract thoroughly before signing on the dotted line.

Additional costs may be factored into the bill. These can include stump-and-root grinding. Trees will be cut down to the stump. To prevent eyesores or tripping hazards, some home-owners opt to have the stumps ground down into sawdust. This will not remove all of the roots but will take care of most of the above-ground portion of the remaining stump. It is usually up to the homeowner to discard the sawdust or use it as a mulching material.

Expect the ground around the former tree to be soft, and there may be a depression depend-ing on how much stump grinding took place. Some people prefer to wait a season for the ground to recover before planting something new. It may take a while for grass to sprout where a tree was once located, and there may be bare spots when grass starts to grow in.

Tree removal can be an expensive venture but is necessary for diff erent reasons. Be sure that tree-removal services are fully insured before signing a contract.
