PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail)Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God. Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to answer me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my mother. We are a century old 100 acre family farm located on Route 9 in Halfmoon. Merritt DeVoe along with his wife Margaret started building this farm right after his return from service during World War I. Groomed in the family farm since his birth, son Lawrence and his wife Ava eventually took over the business in 1965. Their 10 children all helped in the family business throughout the years but four of them (Lynn, Craig, Joy and Alan) have stayed on and continue to work the farm today.
Our main product is our acres of beautiful apple trees where we harvest 15 different varieties. We also grow our own corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, winter squash, peppers and pumpkins. Our country store is OPEN YEAR ROUND. We have a bakery full of pies, muf ns, cookies and pastries. Browse our wonderful selection of local products as well as our own produce. Gather great gift ideas like custom designed fruit and gift baskets.
From April until October each year you can also spend some time in our ice cream shop Rainbow Delights. They offer great old fashioned favorites like sausage or steak sandwiches, salt potatoes and our own corn on the cob. But they also offer ter-ri c everyday food like hot dogs, hamburgers, fries and onion rings. Then you can top off your visit with a premium soft ice cream treat like a cone, malt or sundae.
Please join us at www.devoesorchards.com, on facebook or twitter. Our family has had the honor of taking care of our customers families some for multiple generations. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you and your family. Please stop in and see us!

ChristmasRocks!!For serious shoppers and
hardcore bargain hunters, battling the crowds and en-during the endless lines on Black Friday are simply traditions that usher in the holiday shopping season. For the rest of us, the idea of rising at 3 a.m. on the morning after Thanksgiv-ing and heading out into the night to compete for gifts and assorted holiday goods with thousands of zealous consumers is nothing short of a nightmare. But for the truly squeamish, whose goal is to avoid even the hint of a crowd, there are indeed ways to purchase every gift on your list without encoun-tering hordes of holiday shoppers.
The most obvious strategy for avoiding the masses is to shop online. According to surveys conducted by public opinion pollsters Rasmussen Reports and BIGresearch, in 2010 nearly 64 percent of American adults did at least a portion of their shopping on the Web. Increasingly, people of all ages are opt-ing to shop online not only to fi nd better prices, but because purchasing via the Internet is convenient, fast and enables consumers to perform quick and accurate product and price compari-sons. And with so many online retailers offering free shipping during the holiday season, many consumers see little reason to step inside a brick-and-mortar establish-ment.
However, even diehard e-shoppers recognize that there is something to be said for choosing a gift on site and in person; for tak-ing the time to see and touch an object to determine its suitability. Whether youre heading out in search of a dazzling diamond or a set of new dishtowels, here are
Holiday shopping minus the crowds
some tips for avoiding shop-ping crowds:
* Shop all year round. Its harder to sidestep the throngs of holiday shoppers during the peak season between Oc-tober and late December. By picking up gifts throughout the year, you can take advan-tage of sales and avoid full parking lots and long lines. Whats more, year-round holiday shopping means that your gift budget gets spread out over the course of an entire year rather than a few short months.
* Shop when the crowds are elsewhere. The busiest holi-day shopping periods are in the late afternoon or early evening and, of course, on
weekends. If you can shop
at lunchtime or take a few
hours off during the work-
day, chances are good that
stores will be far less crowd-
ed. Other good times to shop
are during popular televised
sporting events or television
shows.
* Shop with purpose. If you
know what youre shop-
ping for and have a good
idea where to get it, theres
a greater likelihood that you
can get in and out of the
store quickly -- and without
blowing your budget on un-
necessary items that catch
your eye. GG11B288
People shopping for toys and presents this holiday season who are also trying to be consci-entious of buying American or Canadian may want to pay more attention to the items they are getting. According to research by the U.S. Census Bureau, for the 2010 holiday season, $5.1 billion in toy imports originated in China. China was the leading country of origin for stuffed toys coming into North American ports, as well as for a number of other popular holiday gifts. These include roller skates ($37 million), sports footwear ($218 million) and basketballs ($32 million). China also is the leading supplier of ice skates, with Thailand and Canada ranking second and third for manufacture. Artifi cial Christmas trees and decoration are also big business for China. The U.S. imported $488.5 million worth of Christmas tree ornaments from the country last year and $28.2 million worth of artifi cial trees. There are some locally made toys, however. The U.S. has over 700 locations that make everything from games to dolls to childrens vehicles. California leads the nation with the most domestic toy/game production locations.

With so many people looking
for alternatives to costly holi-
day fare, newspapers, maga-
zines and online cooking sites
are overfl owing with great
ideas. But the key to hosting
a successful seasonal meal is
not simply fi nding interesting
recipes and purchasing lower-
cost foods, but in creating and
organizing a menu that works
from start to fi nish. The easiest
way to do that? Make a plan
and stick to it.
Share the cooking and the cost.
Rising food costs and tighter
budgets have prompted many
people to host potluck holiday
dinners. As the host, you might
prepare the main dish and have
your guests fi ll in the rest of the
menu. Either ask participants
to contribute their signature
salad, side dish or dessert, or
plan a meal along a particular
theme and give guests choices
from among a list of menu
items.
Simplify. There is no rule stat-
ing that holiday dinners have
to be fancy, so dont be afraid
to plan a menu that has fewer
and less costly components.
For example, serve a hearty
and fl avorful turkey stew or
soup in place of a more ex-
pensive roasted turkey. Pair it
with a simple salad and loaves
of crusty bread, then fi nish up
with homemade apple cobbler.
Your guests will leave happy
and well nourished, and you
will have served up a fl avorful
and frugal holiday feast.
Cook and freeze. Another op-
tion is to build your menu
around a few dishes that can
be prepared ahead and frozen.
Cooking ahead saves money
by spreading out food expendi-
tures and avoiding last-minute
shopping, which often leads to
spending more money.
Go meatless. Vegetarian dish-
es can be far less expensive,
especially when feeding a
crowd. Consider replacing the
turkey or roast with a pasta or
risotto dish, roasted vegetable
tart or veggie lasagna. Great
sources of vegetarian recipes
include vegkitchen.com, epi-
curious.com, vegetariantimes.
com, and allrecipes.com.
Go ethnic. While tradition
tends to rule at Thanksgiving,
Christmas and New Years
menus are wide open. How
about a Mexican fi esta or an
Italian feast? With a large pan
of enchiladas or a big bowl of
spaghetti and meatballs, its
easy to feed a crowd and stay
on budget.
Stick to homemade. As a rule,
anything you make at home
will cost less -- and likely taste
better -- than prepared foods
from the grocery store or a res-
taurant. If you stick with sim-
ple recipes that dont require
an array of exotic ingredients,
your homemade holiday meal
will hit the spot and you wont
hit the ceiling when you add
up the food bill.
Ideas abound for budget-friendly holiday meals
Deciding on and paying for holiday gifts can be a challenge under the best circumstances. But then there are the inevitable sticky situations that can leave even the most experienced gift-givers scratching their heads. In the hopes of dodging major gift gaffes this holiday season, here are eight tips for gracious giving and receiving.
* Review your gift list each year to determine if any relationships have changed and require a shift in your gift-giving plan.
* Dont ask non-family members on your gift list what they would like. This not only spoils the surprise, but puts pressure on re-cipients to gauge how much you want to spend and requires them to get you something in return.
* Dont feel obligated to match what others spend. Buying gifts based on what others spend is both unnecessary and can lead to excessive expenditures.
* For workplace gifts, adhere to the companys policies and make sure that gifts are given out of ap-
A quick guide to gift-giving etiquette preciation, not expectation.
* Including a gift receipt is a good idea and avoids potentially awkward situations when an item doesnt fi t or doesnt work.
* Give holiday tips to those indi-viduals whose service you count on throughout the year, such as hairstylists, babysitters, dog walk-ers, etc. An easy rule of thumb for holiday season tips is to double the
usual tip. For household employ-ees, give one weeks pay.
* If someone surprises you with a gift, the best bet is to respond hon-estly. Let the giver know that you are surprised, touched and appre-ciative as well as a bit embarrassed that you dont have a gift in return. Then let it go and add his/her name to your gift list for the following year.
