Agenda

• Why use web statistics?• Our set-up and interpretation of data• Findings; what we can extract from web statistics

Library web statistics Slide no 3MnCn, Oct 9, 2007

Should you care?

• Is there anybody out there?• or are you wasting money?

• What are they doing?• using the expected services,

following the expected paths?

• When is it used?• 24/7 service needed?

• What is not used?• pages that should be

deleted/promoted?

Our set-up

• Focus is mostly on set-up, not actual results

How do we relate numbers to users, usage, and usability?

• Users• named users, not IP• exclude search robots and system users

• Usage• “real” clicks, not sessions, files or Mb• reported by user/department and/or day/month• trends and changes are important, not actual numbers!

• Usability• promote most used services• remove unused click patterns• remove unused services

Saving user clicks

• Search engines• they tend to be VERY active thus corrupting user trends

• Search pages create more clicks than browse pages• be careful comparing number of clicks on different type

of pages/services

• Back button-navigation is not counted• 42% of all navigation

• Be careful when benchmarking web pages and websites• and even more if they use different statistical software• “most used”=?, “user”=?

Library web statistics Slide no 16MnCn, Oct 9, 2007

Saving user data

• Be sure that you are allowed to store and utilise personal data!

• Be careful not to present personal data

• Limit access to raw data to a few system users, let Library staff see anonymous data only

• Do not use data to tell users how to behave, users have the right to click as they wish

Library web statistics Slide no 17MnCn, Oct 9, 2007

Expected findings

• Entry• users enters via the front page

• Most used• search the Library catalogue

• Most active users• scientists

• Usage• most active users visit once or twice a week

• Navigational paths• Intranet portal Library Web Catalogue etc.

Wisdom of the crowd

• Our users• are “everyone”, using different services• use the specific service that helps them doing their tasks• are very precise when navigating • don’t browse the web site

Library web statistics Slide no 24MnCn, Oct 9, 2007

Conclusion

• Web statistics• know how to interpret your data• part of the truth, if you focus on trends and changes• false, if you focus on separate numbers

• Remember to use it actively• and change you web site accordingly
