ONFIDENCE IN JUSTICE SYSTEM DROPS POST-GHOMESHI

March 26, 2016 (Ottawa, ON) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll conducted shortly following the verdict inhe Jian Ghomeshi case nds Torontonians reporting decreased condence in the criminal justice system.

The Mainstreet/Postmedia Poll has a margin of error of +/- 2.18%, 19 times out of 20.

The Jian Ghomeshi trial will be remembered for many things, including the fact that it was the rst trial toeavily include social media. 4 out of every 10 Toronto residents followed this case very closely, and another5% followed somewhat closely. Every piece of evidence, every detail, and every story was shared, tweetednd posted and discussed. We saw many journalists live tweet the entire thing, down to every sentence ofhe verdict," said Quito Maggi, President of Mainstreet Research.

It’s clear that not many people believe the prosecution did a good job, including 34% of women whotrongly disapprove of the crown’s performance, and additional 18% somewhat disapproved for a combined2% disapproval rating among Toronto women. Among men the crown received a 40% combinedisapproval rating.

The verdict which saw Mr. Ghomeshi acquitted on all charges received the disapproval of 49% of men, ncluding 30% who strongly disapproved. Women were less likely to approve of the verdict with just 11%trongly approving and another 22% somewhat approving."

There appears to be a generational gap in the scores with older Torontonians registering higher approvalsor the verdict and performance of the crown than younger respondents.

Condence in our justice system seems to be shaken, with 38% saying the trial and its verdict decreasedheir condence in the criminal justice system. Immediately following the verdict we saw protests, and aublic outcry on social media despite the fact and perhaps because many anticipated the verdict would notesult in any guilt verdicts for Mr. Ghomeshi. 46% of women say their condence in the system decreasedompared to just 30% of men who said the same,” he nished.

“I recommend "Raiders of the Lost Campaign Arc," released Oct. 18, because it’s an interviewwith a pollster that everyone who follows politics should hear. Quito Maggi, of Mainstreet Public

Research, was the only pollster I saw call the Liberal majority with such condence, a weekbefore we voted.

Maggi also has the distinction of being the guy who predicted the BC Liberals would win in 2013,in deance of the majority of the polls.

His technique involves picking a true bellwether riding and polling it thoroughly. His explanationfor how he does it is well worth a listen and should be required research for anyone running a

political campaign.” - Shannon Rupp, The Tyee, November 4th, 2015
