CONSTRUCTION-DECONSTRUCTION

An installation in clay

by Caroline Ho-Bich-Tuyen Dang

“The Killing” is an installation in clay, created and then destroyed by Vietnamese-Australian artist Caroline Ho-Bich-Tuyen Dang.

She says her preferred medium is clay because it recalls a childhood experience

“At the start of our journey to Australia, I had to cross a muddy field to reach our boat. My feet were immersed in mud for what seemed an eternity.”

Dang says “the title of these works ‘The Killing’ came from thoughts of a merciful escape for a family friend and others who had gone through a life threatening expedition only to be killed by a senseless car crash

“The final part of the work was the destruction of the work. It was only appropriate that as the work was physically constructed that it should also be physically deconstructed.”

Dang destroyed the installation on December 18, 1995 in the Bankstown Old Town Plaza, in Sydney, after exhibiting it in a couple of other venues.
