Meeting MinutesFinger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes

I usually go back over last month’s column before I start writing the current column; I want to make sure I don’t repeat myself. This month I don’t need to, I know that the two major things I want to talk about are important enough to repeat.

First up, money, as you all should be aware of the region did not do real well last year. Our rally program had a surplus, but every other program ran a deficit, farsurpassingtherallyprogramsurplus. Now I don’t want to sound like a politician in Washington but, we can’t continue like this.

We have expenses that are not programspecific.Wesend twopeopleto the National Convention, pay some expenses for the RE to attend NEDiv conventions. We publish a monthly newsletter, maintain a website and are putting on a couple of region picnics during the year. I feel that all of these expenses are important and necessary.

So what do we do? This past board meeting we decided to form a committee that would look at our expenses and see if there are things we can cut back on. Do we continue to send out Top End

monthly or do we cut back to bi-monthly or do we change the format and continue to put it out monthly. What about our races, do we continue to offer the perks that everyone has come to expect? So don’t be surprised if things change and if some costs go up.

Now, the second thing, after close to twenty years MaryAnne Shults is resigning as our webmaster. She assured me that she would continue to do the job untilwe find a replacement.Hersuggestion is that we form a committee. Rather than rephrase her suggestions I think I will list them here:

• Createacommunicationscommittee (perhaps started as ad hoc for now) to oversee all region communications including content of Top End, website, social media, promotional materials, etc. The committee would encourage members to submit personal experience stories, photographs/illustrations, video, etc., to be disseminated among the above region communications.

Committee’s duties could include:

• Set goals and objectives• Representative from each interest

area including RoadRally, RallyCross, Solo and Club Racing as well as someone to cover other events such as car shows, auto shows, etc.

• Assignment of someone to manage multimedia (coordinate someone to take photos, videos, etc. at events, and work with both print and online dissemination)

• Assignment of someone to assist design in professional fliers(e.g.,WinterRallySeries,all the region’s races, etc.) and other promotional materials (e.g., videos for region booth at Rochester Auto Show; there are currently something like 75 competitor videos shared in the region’s YouTube Channel)

• Assist Top End editor with all copy editing of content and coordination of above-mentioned materials.

• Assist web team/webmaster as needed

• Have a “web team” versus one website manager.

We don’t need to continue the web page in its current format, we could change to something that might be easier to maintain.

SoIfinishupthiscolumnwithafinalpoint. I have faith in the Finger Lakes Region and that we will come out of this better and we will be better able to handle what is in front of us.

Until next month,Mike

2013 Season Schedules

Tentative schedules have been set for Solo and RallyCross. They are listed on page 7. Contact the respective chairs for further information.

Editor’s BenchTop End, along with other areas with

expenses, is looking at ways to reduce costs to offset the increase in site rental costs. The current format used costs nearly $2 per copy per month. This covers the cost of printing and bulk mailing.

There are a number of options that could be used to trim cost: 1.) Eliminate color on the cover(s). 2.) Eliminate the use of glossy paper for the cover. 3.) Reduce font size to cut down on the number of pages needed (the current format requires that the total number of pages be a multiple of four). 4.) Send digital copies to those using the internet. 5.) Use the digital copy posted on theregion’swebsite,www.flr-scca.com,forthose with internet access. 6.) Use a lower quality paper. 7.) If there are more than one copies sent to household, sharing one issue with the others.

Using the internet requires that the members e-mail address on file with the national office be correct. (A large number are not correct – please logon to your information and verify that yours is correct!) We currently do not send hard copies to those who read the version posted on the website.

Bulk mail delays by the US Postal Servicehascausedthefinalizationdateofeach issue to be moved up 20 days before the next general membership meeting.

Rally Meeting NotesFebruary 12, 201396 Church Street, Victor, NY

These notes are grouped by subject, not in chronological order. The following seven RoadRally and RallyCross enthusiasts were

present; Rick Barnes, Carl Dresie, Ben Gilmore, Jamie Hayslip, Jerry Kerwin, Tom Langdon and Alan Smith.

Social, Summer and Fall Rallies(Post meeting: Lynn Randall has requested Oct. 19 for a tour rally

to Bully Hill.)RallyCrossThe last RallyCross event in the Finger Lakes 2012-2013series is

scheduled for Feb. 23. Tony has trophies for the series winners. He needs four more

plaques. The 2013-14 series dates have been requested and are now listed

in the calendar published in the newsletter. STPR®

The charity rally run as part of the Susquhannock Trail Performance Rally® weekend will be a sixty mile or less social event. It will also run Friday morning. Jerry Kerwin will contact Greg Lester about chairing the charity rally. Tom suggested that a donation be made to the local chapter of the American Cancer Society if the rally is not run. Winter Rally Series

A surprising number of eight cars competed in the Equipped class at the Ithaca Winter Rally. (Results and an article are printed in this issue of Top End. Ed.) More trophy glasses are needed due to “shrinkage” of the number provided.

“Cabin Fever,” the Feb. 16 rally, with Jamie Hayslip as rallymaster, has been safety checked and is ready to run. Check point workers and other volunteer positions are being wrapped up.) Tom will check on thestatusoftheinsurancecertificate.

Rick Barnes is writing a rally for Mar. 16. More information on “SlipSlidingAway‘13”canbefoundintheflyerinTopEndandonwww.flr-scca.com.

“Absolute Zero,” Frank Beyer as rallymaster, will run in the Tug Hill plateau area on Mar. 9. This is an invitation only event of about 250milesstartingnearCooperstown.Startingat1p.m.withthefirstcarfinishingabout11p.m.

Miscellaneous Discussions Jim Perrin has asked about running a winter rally next year

somewhere in western New York. This will be done in the style of the Finger Lakes Region’s Winter Rally Series and may be included in the FLR series.

Both Alan Smith and Matt Rhoads have rally scoring programs. Matt’s will create a report in the format needed by SCCA. There may be a glitch or two in the programs.

An article should be submitted to Sports Car.The general instructions should include a statement concerning the

requirement of a two person (driver and co-driver) team. Ben Gilmore is looking for a ’96 or ’95 rust free two door Neon

body. Tom needs the large print version of Top End.Carl circulated the current versions of the Finger Lakes calendar

Jerry will check on the status of Curtis Braun. Those attending the meeting missed the State of the Union speech

AND the Westminster Dog Show. Again the meeting was devoid of any discussion of wiener dogs

and submarines. (Well almost!)

Ithaca Winter Rally 2013

This year’s Ithaca Winter Rally started in a 2012 MazdaMiatathatIbarelyfitin, abrandnewrallycomputer I had never used, and a new direction. The feelings Gary and I had were of the “been there/done that” variety in regards to direction. So we created this year’s route based on some of the “old” Phil Barnes rallies based in Cortland (I was in still in college then).Afterdrawingthefirstmap,whichwas224miles round trip, we decided to trim some fat while maintaining new roads for the region. After repeated trial and error drives in the country, we managed to get the rally itself down to 204 miles and 6 counties.

As for the rally itself, we had crews come from as far as DC, Ohio, North Carolina, Maryland, and Maine as well as the regular crews that show up, regardless of the location. The big surprise of the night had to be the number of equipped entries. We had 15 overall entries and eight were of the equipped variety! A level I have never seen before. We had three limited, three novices, and one stock to round outthefieldof15.Unfortunately,thesnowwasnotas cooperative as the entrants and made for a muddy evening.

At the halfway point, I heard good sories of crews setting up the checkpoint locations, as well as findingoutthatRichandTonyhadtodropoutearly

due to premature exhaust failure (a likely story). Overall, the feeling was that everybody was having a good time seeing new roads and nobody had gotten lost. Curiously, between checkpoints 4 and 5 while doing the course opening I found a car in the middle of the road. It was an oil change gone badly wrong, and these two guys were stuck in the middle of a state forest with bad cellphone service. I stopped and asked if they needed help, and told them what was going on. They proceeded to sit on the hood of their car and watch people drive by them at rally speed. I found out later some crews had slowed down thinking it was a crew and needed help.

My brother Jacob and I had arrived back at Manos’ Diner to score, and we had some crews back. I found out that we had lost Ben Gilmore and Pam Gilmore to a water pump failure from a savage deer attack during the previous rally. They however, had won a 1st class rollback ride back to Seneca Falls. We managed to get scoring done in a timely manner, only after a few revisions to the results.

The winner of Stock class (one Entrant) was Russell Norton and Joe Signor with a score of 491 and 10th overall. Novice saw three entrants; 3rd in class with 1064 points were Jeremie Snyder and Kevin Boettler, 2nd in class Michael Seitz and Gretchen Neureuter with 711, 1st in class and 11th overall was the team of James and Katherine Spoth with 580. Limited saw three entrants; 3rd in class were

David Long and Josh Perry with 356 points, 2nd in class were Jim Perrin and Lee McElhinny with a 86. 1st in class and 6th overall with a 54.24 factored was Steve and Jeff Coppolla. Equipped saw more than halfthefieldandwasverycompetitive;8thinclasswere Rich Smith and Tony Zanni, 7th in class - Ben and Pam Gilmore, 6Th in Class were Dan and Anna Thiel, 5th in class with 43 points was the dynamic duo of Jamie Hayslip and Matt Rhoads, 4th in class with a factored 32.5 were Ron Johnstonbaugh and Jack von Kaenel, 3rd in class was the superhero group of “Santa Claus” and “Dr. Devo” with a factored 27.5, 2nd in class and also in my opinion, the best run of the night belongs to Kurt Thiel and Dave McArthur with a 20. And of course, 1st in class, 1st overall, 1st intheworld….withafinaltallyof14,wastheteamof Alan Smith and Eric Hobron.

I would like to thank all of my volunteers. Carl Dresie, Barbara Lissow, John Walsh, Mike and Marsha Toombs, Alan Blood, Craig McMaster, Dave Avery, Sally Bossert, Larry Wells, Dima Starostin, Johanna Primmer, and Jacob Kastenhuber. I would also like to thank Manos’ Diner, as they put up with another year of our shenanigans. And most importantly, I would like to thank the rally teams, because if no one competes, there are no events. Until IWR 2014.

Ten Degrees and Melting!?!RallyCross No. 8By Victor Prinzim

It was a beautiful sight, the snow covered field, blue sky and the sun glistened off the bright orange cones that marked the course. This set the stage for Round 8 of the Finger Lakes SCCA RallyCross series. The temperature was a balmy 10 degrees at 7 a.m. when I showed up to set the course. Throughout the day it didn’t get any warmer than 19 degrees, about the only thing that that meant was we had to keep the water in the cooler to keep it from freezing.

My good buddies Jake Vallee, Michelle Richau, Jim Perrin and Sarah Peterson were there early to help get things set up. Bruce Perry never disappoints, a nice warm garage was waiting for our competitors to register and keep warm in during the break. Thefield, beautifulasitwas, hadsomesurprises in store for Tony Zanni’s wCRX during the course set up. At the last event there were more than a few clumps of mud left lying around, and they froze into suspension eating boulders. This made for a really new course design. And luckily no one busted a single piece of suspension work, not even Zanni in the wCRX.

About10a.m.thefirstcarwasoff.Wehadsomeheavyhittersinthefieldand some really fast newbies, which is

always a good time. The snow and ice made for a super slide-y good time. Kurt Thiel showed up with “the Celica” from that story in Top End, you know the one Rich Smith killed at STPR®. Rumors are that Kurt replaced the entire front end with that of a snow mobile to help him get around the course. Another car from the garage of Marnie Soom ended up at the event piloted by Mike McGinnis from Innovative Tuning in Buffalo, NY. I say piloted because he wasflying.Firstplaceoverallathisfirstevent, beginners luck? I think not.

There were a bunch of new guys: Garrick Tisher, James Parascandola, Ray Zheng, Colin Kingsley, and Chris Surrusco. Four of them drove some variation of a Subaru and one brought a rear wheel drive BMW 318is. One of them lost a GoPro camera at the top of the hill, another lost an exhaust hanger, and one may have lost his virginity.

Charli Tameris showed up and told people when to go, all day. Sarah Peterson, Zanni’s girlfriend, showed up in the purple-est jacket and shot some great photos. Brandon West brought chili again, and again, Zanni didn’t get any.Afterlunchthefieldturnedintoasloppy mess of mud somehow, thank you sun. Although the temperature never gotover22degrees,thesunflexeditssunny self and melted just the top layer ofsoiltomakeagreasymessofthefieldand the cars running on it.

Mark Froelich actually got his car to start and it continued running for the entire day. He even let Brandon West

drive it, and it still made it to the end of the event. Same could be said for the “WagonofDestitute.”Ithadaflattire,a dead battery, and a muddy window. It stalled twice and caused Jim Perrin to lose it. After the third time it died, Darren Ohara, Kingsley and Richau performed a not so quick battery swap and kept the W.O.D. running the rest of the day. While we’re on the subject of surprises, Zanni’s wCRX actually made it through an entire event without havingtobefixed.Thefirsttimesinceit was brought back to life. Don’t call it a seagull; it’s been a penguin for years. Yup tried to make an LL Cool J reference there.

Jake Vallee and Richau are cute. They car pooled down and shared a car during the event. I was really hoping Richau beat Jake, but a mere 0.6 seconds kept her from it. Jake did crack a fender and then after being beat by a Celica again sold the car after he hot glued the fender back together. Jeremy Keck got his “Slo-baru” back together for the event, nothing like 7000 RPMs to break in an engine.

That’s it. We didn’t roll any cars, we had chili and brownies, a new guy won, the wCRX didn’t have to get towed home, the indestructible WOD made it, noonelostanyfingerstofrostbite, andthe horses next door enjoyed the Mike McGinnis show. The next event is the final event in the 2012-2013 season.Close races for overall and 2wd class shouldmakeforagreatfinale.Seeyouthere February 23.
