Meeting MinutesFinger Lakes Region, SCCA General Membership Meeting Minutes

Well, the BFGoodrich Tires Finger Lakes SCCA Super Tour is history. There was a dedicated group of people who spent a lot of time putting together the event, and it paid off. Things went better over the three-day event than they have in many years. We had one hour of overtime on Friday, two hours on Saturday and finished on timeonSunday. The trackworked with us to make everything work as fast and smooth as possible. I haven’t seen victory laps at WGI in years, not only did we have them but it didn’t slow things down. We owe a great deal of thanks to Chris DeMinco and Elizabeth Thiel.AddingtheNationalOfficetotheeventmadethingsalittlemoredifficultand a little more volatile; both Chris and Elizabeth were able to keep on top of things. WGI estimated that we had close to 900 people go through registration, and I’m proud to say that several people commented that registration went well. So we have had two of our three races within two weeks. Both events went off fineandnowweneedtoplanforourFunOne in September.

Dave Ciufo helped me out by putting together a nominating committee. This group is responsible for getting candidates for the board of directors for next year. Thepositionsthatneedtobefilledare,Regional Executive, Assistant Regional Executive, Treasurer, Activities Director,

Secretary and two Directors. If someone calls you and asks you to run, please think it over, or even better, step up and volunteer. Without people running the region; we will no longer have a region.

The Solo program had their annual novice school the weekend after the WGI race. The school was sold out, and while I was there the people in the school seemed to be getting some needed help. After close to 30 years competing I still think the toughest thing about autocrossing is slowing down.

The summer RallyCross season got started in June. Tony Zanni and crew are ready to put on the summer portion of our RallyCross season. The events are running at Perry’s Park and everyone is welcome.

I’vebeenbusyfinishinguptherace(I’ve gotten tired of typing BFGoodrich Tires Finger Lakes SCCA Super Tour so I’m not going to do it this time), tying up the registration and haven’t had a lot of time to do much else. At this point I still haveacoupleofthingstofinishupandit will be done for another year.

So I’m going to make this column a little short this month, hope to see you around.Until next month,Mike

In the fall of my junior year of college a friend and I who was also attending the same college and also was from near where I grew up south of Ithaca decided to go to a local event – the Watkins Glen Grand Prix. It was 1971. Francois Cevert won it. Long story short – she hated it, I loved it. The next year I went to a couple of pro races as a spectator bringing along my younger brother and sister and friends. And yes I did attend the 1972 Grand Prix – won by Jackie Stewart. At thatracetherewasaflyerforjoiningtheSCCA in the program. I had seen the flaggersandotherworkersinthepitandpaddock areas at the pro races and felt I wanted to be more in the know - being in the “inside” plus I could get in for free!SoIfilledouttheflyerandsentitin. Got my membership in April of 1973 and was assigned to the Southern NY Region. One of the contacts was Whitey Bennett so I met up with him in Ithaca andwent tomyfirstSCCAmeeting inBinghamton. There I met some Paddock Marshalls and agreed to meet up with them at a regional race that summer. That race weekend – so happened that Paul Newman was competing! Nice way to start my Paddock Marshall career! That fallwasmyfirstGrandPrixasaPaddock

Marshal. The weekend was not a good one for the racing world. Francois Cevert lost his life during practice. Ronnie Peterson went on to won – but nobody felt happy about it. The next few years I worked every Pro and Amateur weekend that I could. I camped in a tent with all thePaddockMarshallsintheinfield.Imet lots of workers from all walks of life – fun bunch! In 1981 I met a new Paddock Marshal - Michael Toombs. We started dating in 1982. We were married in 1983 and I moved to Rochester, where he was starting his senior year at RIT. Since we were now in the Finger Lakes Region territory it made sense to switch regions so Michael and I joined the FLR region. Michael and I continued to be Paddock Marshals for the next few years. Michael also as well became involved with the Solo program through FLR. We started working the Winter Rally series at some point and went down to STPR® in the late 80’s and became involved with the rally program down there as well. Somewhere along in there I became the worker registrar for STPR. Back then we sent out forms for workers who were interested in volunteering. They would send them back to me and I would assign them to stages etc. I had a few crude databases to work on ..

Somewhere in the early 90’s I started working as a registrar at the track as well. I would work registration in the morning and then go work as a Paddock Marshal the rest of the day. After about a year I gave up being a Paddock Marshal and justvolunteeredatregistration.Myfirsttime as Chief Registrar was a Western NY event at Mosport. Their registrar could not be at the event so I was asked. I remember Jerry Brown being there from the Glen region to help me out. Along in there I co-chaired a few races – one with Carl Dresie. I also was for a few years the “mailer” for Top End. I would pick up Top End from the printer, put the labels on, sort by Zip Code and deliver them tobemailedat thePostOffice. Ihave been Chief Registrar for the Fun One for a number of years. I also was Worker of the Year and have also co-won Outstanding Contribution of the year with Michael a few times. I am currently the Chief Registrar for the region.

Note that the July 27 RallyCross has been moved to August 3. Tony is navigating in the New England Forest Rally (Charli and Tony placed 19 O/A, 5th in class, and 23 O/A, 8th in class – see: http://www.rally-america.com/events/2013/NEFR)August 6

The program for the General Membership meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 6 will be Ben Gilmore showing videos of his “tour” of the Nurburgring, Nordschleife circuit. That and more on this legendary track. (See the June issue of Top End, page 9 for a bit more description.)

Editor’s BenchThe current printer/mailing source

for Top End have experienced problems resulting in the last issues being not stapled and mailed in a 6 x 9 envelope. The previous issues consisted of 11 x 17 sheets stapled into a booklet and mailed ina9x12envelope.BothUSPostOfficerequirements and automated mailing capability have contributed to the changes we have seen.

The availability of local printing and mailing is being investigated. That may allow the printing of Top End in one of the formats seen previously.

If you have suggestions on the form of the hard copy, please contact the editor at: [email protected].

I believe the most difficult times in a parent’s life are when they must let go—be it waving goodbye when they get on the bus for the first day of kindergarten or driving off to start college. I’ve done both of those, but never realized how difficult it would be to say goodbye to one of my first “digital children,” the region’s website at www.flr-scca.com.

The site’s conceptual beginnings started about 1995 when the Web was still not mainstream. Most people were still using Prodigy, and “web development” meant working with limited tools. New England Region had the only other region website and SCCA didn’t yet have an of-ficial site, yet it was well represented by volunteer Richard Welty.

After we started Shults Dot Com in 1994, offering Internet accessibility, we saw a future in the Web; little did we know how the technology would grow. It didn’t matter that I lived 3,000 across the U.S. in California because location was a moot point if one had Internet access. Within the next few years, SDC won the bid for the first official SCCA national website, a contract we had for over five years until they moved it in-house after moving from Denver to Topeka. Over the years, the ma-jority of our clients have somehow been related to the SCCA or other automotive/motorsports themes.

FLR-SCCA.com was launched in ear-ly 1996. So, my ‘digital child’ is nearly an adult, and it’s time to let ‘her’ go.

In the course of those years, I discov-ered my passion lay in writing, layout and design, and teaching, so I returned to col-lege. I’m currently a freelance journalist and an associate professor in the journal-ism at a local community college, working with the college’s student-run publication

as well as teaching media-related classes. Mike Stutzman will be taking the

reins as webmaster for the main website. He and I are currently transitioning, and before the snow flies, it will be under his wing. I will continue to take care of the region’s social media, as I have been do-ing, at Mike’s request.

With a 30-year record of working in the computer industry, Mike is currently co-owner of KRN Computer Service, Inc. and has been doing small-scale custom web development for over 10 years, in-cluding his business’s site.

He offered to take on the webmaster-ing duties when he heard there was a need.

“I felt it would be good to ‘keep it in the family,’” he said was the inspiration. “I want to serve the FLR SCCA community by keeping the website alive.”

Mike joined the region in 1992. He’s has been active in the region’s Solo pro-gram serving on the Solo Board, helping with tech, chairing trophies and workers, as well as chairing events.

When asked about his greatest ac-complishments, he said, “Uh, maybe the five local CP championships in a row, (’03-’07), maybe winning CP at a Na-tional Tour event in 1998 in a stock-legal car, (rain can be your friend,) or maybe it was that one golden run at a local event at R.I.T. (before the repave) where I got through a “box turnaround” (a pinless pin turn) with almost Ken-Block-like car con-trol that I’ve never matched since.”

Please give Mike a warm welcome to this position and be sure to keep those sto-ries, photos, videos and other multimedia coming our way. The email address [email protected] will get to both of us for use on both flr-scca.com and our vari-ety of social media.

“Easier Said Than Done,” a documentary on Performance Rally is to be released this fall. Tony and Jim Perrin are looking in to having a showing at a local theatre, either Rochester or somewhere between Rochester and Buffalo. Could this be done as a region social event? A cruise/rally could be part of the event. Footage from the trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xRioPhVIRE) is on the internet. Cost for showing in a theatre would include theatre rental and the showing fee.

Ben has purchased a rally car cage with bodywork.

Remembering Brian BuchmanBy Alan Smith

One of the facts that I always point out about Solo and Finger Lakes Region in general, is that there are a lot of very nice people involved; Brian Buchman was certainly one of those nice people! On June 17, 2012, Finger Lakes Region lost one of our own in an unfortunate motorcycle accident.

Brian joined our activity in 2004 with a few events in a Silver Jetta. I actually had to look through the archives to research the beginning, but that isn’t hard to understand since Brian never was an “in your face” type personality; that came later when he let his driving speak volumes! In 2005, he came back with an Acura RSX that he ran for several years. I had the pleasure of competing against him and he was always there pushing me faster in my Neon. He ran that same RSX through 2007. In 2005, he received the FLR Solo Rookie of the year. In 2006, Brian was the FLR Most Improved Solo Driver. He rounded out his run as the FLR Solo Driver of the Year in 2007. In 2008, he showed up with a new Evo. I remember talking to him about the car and he had searched for it and found it somewhere down south in order to get the car he wanted.

At the end of the 2008 season, Jason Gassman was ready to hand over the reins of the Solo program and Brian was ready to take on the task. Brian did a great job with the program for the next three years. We all knew the program was well watched after and anything that needed to be done was taken care of. Brian wasn’t the type that liked to talk in front of the crowd, but he always had things well under control.

At the end of 2011, he too was ready to relinquish the program responsibilities. For whatever reason, he didn’t show up at the start of the 2012 season. I never knew why, butfigured that he needed time toparticipate in other activities until he had the time and energy to return. I always missed seeing him at events and hoped that one day he would return. Unfortunately, that will no longer be possible.

Brian, you were one of the nice people, in the sport and in general life. You will most certainly be missed. I am glad to have known you and you will always be one of my fond memories of Solo competition. Rest well!
