Settings & Props• The setting is at an All Time Low concert and backstage at the concert. • For this, they use the following props: guitars (as they’re playing a

show), a drum kit (as Rian is playing them), microphones (Alex is singing therefore he would need a mic for a show), merch shirts (these are sold at concerts so to keep it realistic there’s a merch table set up), All access badge (this is used by their manager), weights (used backstage by Zack to highlight the quantity in which he exercises), A4 photos (used by the fans to be signed by the band), whistle (used by their manager to get them onstage), a phone (people texting/tweeting about the concert) and sunglasses (to hide the girls eyes).

Costume, Hair & Makeup• Alex – Alex’s hair is styled with hairspray and is conventional to the

genre. He’s wearing a black and white striped top with a black sleeveless jacket.• Jack – Jack’s hair is also styled with hairspray and, like Alex’s, is

conventional to the genre. He’s wearing a blue and white top which connotes goodness and softness which could reflect his character.• Rian – He’s wearing a plain grey top which connotes balanced and is a

neutral colour.• Zack – He’s wearing a black top which connotes formality with a white

“x” on the front which connotes balance.

Lighting & Colour • The colours are mainly blue when they’re performing which connotes

peace and confidence.• Like “Damned If I Do Ya”, this video has high key lighting as it’s an

upbeat video.• When they’re not performing around them are slightly dull colours

such as grey and brown in the dressing room which could suggest that performing is the highlight of their day.

Editing & Editing Techniques• Long takes at the beginning to highlight the start of the song and the

small story.• Small takes when the song reaches the chorus as it gives evidence to

the fast pace of the song.• Dissolve – long shot into a medium shot. A smooth transition

Page 8: Media Deconstruction 3 - All Time Low - Weightless

Sound• There is diegetic sound at the beginning as the women are talking

quickly and simultaneously to Alex. However, the sound becomes disorientated as he tries to focus on the individual voices.• The remainder of the video is the non-diegetic sound of the music.

Although, as they’re performing the same song, it could be considered as diegetic sound.• In addition to this, at the end, a non-diegetic “boink” sound is heard

as the text above everyone's head shows up. • Moreover, a diegetic sound of the crowd cheering is the fibnal sound

to be heard which tells the audience that it was a good performance.

Representation & Genre• Genre: Pop-punk• combines components of punk rock with pop music.• Typically loud guitars, fast punk tempos and chord changes.• Pop-influenced melodies and lyrical themes

• Representation:• At the start the band, particularly Alex, are shown as well known as there is a little

group of dedicated fans all talking to Alex. • They are portrayed as a fun band who make light hearted jokes. • Jack is portrayed as the ladies man as he goes in to a room with four girls and they put

a note on the door.

Narrative• This video is primarily a performance video.• At the start, Alex is being pestered by a small group of girls, which are

fans. He walks to the stage signing the song starts performing on the stage. • The camera follows the different type of people at concerts with text

above of them jokingly insulting them. • The theme of the video is “nothing personal” therefore the text is

meant to be taken as a joke.
