Nothng Works I was enjoying the second week of a two-week vacation thesame way I had enjoyed the first week: by doing as little as possible. I ig-nored my wife's not-so-subtle hints about completing certain jobs aroundthe house, but I didn't realize how much this bothered her until the clothesdryer refused to work, the iron shorted, and the sewing machine motorburned out in the middle of a seam. The final straw came when she pluggedin the vacuum cleaner and nothing happened. She looked so stricken that I

had to offer some consolation. "That's okay, honey," I said. "You still haveme." She looked up at me with tears in her eyes. "Yes," she wailed, "but youdon't work either!"

This year's food drive takes place thisweek, and Saturday is collection day.Throughout the week, volunteers de-liver bags to individual homes with fly-ers asking for donations. On Saturdaytheyll return to pick up the donationsand deliver them to local food banks. InMerritt last year, about 16 volunteersworked nearly 200 hours and collectedapprox. 1000 lbs of food for our food

bank. This is the 3rd year for this-province-wide initiative.

The growth game Part 3The Merritt Official Community Plan

acknowledges that the TNRD hasadopted a 1.8% projected growth rate fortheir official plans. To show some op-tions, the Merritt OCP projected growthscenarios of 0.5%, 1.0%, and 2.0% overthe next 15 years, which would result ina 2030 population of 8300, 9375, and11,759 respectively (Merritt OCP, 2004).

The community survey conducted aspart of the Integrated Growth Strategy indi-cated that a significant portion of the com-munity considered 15,000 inhabitants to

be a good population base for Merritt in2030. In order to achieve this populationlevel by 2030, a growth rate in the order of

3.2% would be required. The Integrated Growth Strategy also

states: According to the TNRD RegionalGrowth Strategy, 40,000 additional peo-ple will be added [to all of TNRD] by2015. The TNRD projects the populationof Merritt will reach 9,600 by that samedate. That was in May 2010.

However, the BC Census shows thatin 2011, the city of Merritt had a popula-tion of 7,113, a 1.6% change from the 2006census of 6,998 thats 115 new peopleover the 5 years, 23 per year.

This summer, TNRD updated theirRegional Growth Strategy, and it was pre-sented to City Council during a regularmeeting. Theyve revised their projectedgrowth rate from 1.8% down to 0.8% peryear over the next 25 years, according to

theMerritt Herald dated July 11, 2013.Of course its impossible to really pre-dict how many people will come here inthe future. If we extrapolate from the recentpast, there will only be 7,205 in 2015, andthats not even half of the 15,000 that par-ticipants in the Citys survey thoughtwould be a good population base for Mer-ritt in 2030! (Wed have to grow by 520 peo-ple per year from now on to reach that!)

There is one possible game-changer inMerritts near future: the BC Hydro powerupgrade which should be completed nextyear. In economic development circles, thisis being touted as the thing that couldchange it all for us. And once theresenough hydro that will allow this commu-nity to grow, the ball will be in Ec Devscourt to make it happen. KL
