Encore - SydneyEveryone loves a train ride right? Well maybe not for 10 hours over-night to Sydney. But kids are resilient and this was the start to our annual pilgrimage to Sydney for the ‘Encore’ Music excursion.

We arrived at Sydney Central Station at 7am Sunday morning, stored our bags and went searching for a place to eat breakfast. To our surprise almost nothing in Sydney opens until 10am on Sundays. We walked around Darling Harbour taking in the Chinese Gardens, the picturesque harbour itself and stopping for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. Students were amazed by the memorabillia from rock and pop music’s greatest artists. At night we went to see ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - The Musical’, staged at the historic Capitol Theatre. For some students this was their first time to a professional theatre show and it didn’t disappoint, with amazing special effects, brilliant oompa loompa scenes and fantastic live band.

Day 2 began with a train ride to Mascot for a tour of the largest audio recording facility in the Southern hemisphere, Studio 301. This is where many of the worlds greatest musicians come to record or be mastered. From rap stars such as Zedd to pop princesses such as Katy Perry, the list is endless. The facility blew the students minds, and they wanted to stay all day, but we had way more to do. Next stop was Pitt Street Mall for a tour of the historic State Theatre. This amazing theatre, which combines French, Italian, Art-deco and Gothic architecture was set to be demolished in the 70’s but thanks to many factors is still here providing a spectacular live performance venue. The final item on our checklist of events was the real reason for the excursion..... ‘ENCORE’. This is a showcase of the best performances and compositions from last years HSC cohort, performed in the stunning concert hall of the Sydney Opera House. Students were able to witness top calibre student performances from many genres, on many different instruments, and also gain insight into what it takes to achieve the top results in HSC Music.

It was then another early rise, to catch the 7am train for the not so engaging 10 hour train ride back home. Mr Fisher and Mrs Bowie were very impressed by the group of 16 students who were great representatives of Maclean High School and displayed all of our FRESH values throughout the 3 days. Mr Matthew Fisher.

ASSETS Camp (Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science)During the summer school holidays I spent a week at Newcastle University at an ASSETS Camp (Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technol-ogy and Science). 30 other kids from all over Australia attended and as a group, we participated in different activities revolving around STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). During the week I got to undertake chemistry lessons at the chemistry lab, went to the CSIRO Solar Energy Centre and learned about the uses and the significance of solar energy. While at the CSIRO Solar Energy Centre we were put into groups and made solar cars to race against each other. Not only did I participate in STEM activities, but I also got to experience the Aboriginal Culture of Newcastle. Throughout the evenings, I
