Boom BANG Boogie WorkshopWhat were your kids doing on the Staff Development Day of Term 3?Surfing? Playing computer games? Watching TV?

Well for some it was a great time to brush up their musical skills at the ‘Boom BANG Boogie Workshop’ held at the Clarence Valley Conservatorium in Grafton.Five students from the Lower Clarence participated in the workshop (three from Maclean High School and two from Maclean Public School) where they participated in individual workshops for their specific instruments before joining up to form a very large ensemble to perform for a public audience. Patrick Moore (Year 9) performed on bass guitar, while sister Kate (Year 8) performed on tuned percussion and even younger brother Ethan (Year 6) played trombone. They were joined by the Fisher brothers of Ethan (Year 7) on saxophone and Hayden (Year 6) on drums. All had a fantastic day with like minded musicians from across the Clarence Valley and they were tutored by instrumental specialists from the Conservatorium.

Ethan Fisher and Kate Moore get very little time to breathe as they head to Sydney to perform in the Sydney Opera House for the Sydney Festival of Instrumental Music. We wish them all the best as they represent Maclean High School and the Clarence Valley at this prestigious event. Mr Matt Fisher, Head Teacher CAPA.

Year 11 Biological Diversity Study Day On Wednesday, 19th June, Year 11 Biology students participated in the Biological Diversity Study Day at the North Coast Botanical Gardens in Coffs Harbour. Presenters from the Australian Museum, Botanical Gardens and Taronga Zoo gave interesting talks about the evolution of plants and animals in Australia. The students participated in hands-on workshops which included fossils of extinct megafauna species such as the Diprotodon, and were able to touch fauna such as a possum, shingleback and python whilst learning about their unique adaptations to the Australian environment.

This was a valuable hands on field trip that covered part of the compulsory depth study of the Biology course. Ms Chris Fira.

On the Tuesday Year 5 primary school students were invited to participate in an Indigenous Games Gala Day on the western oval. The games were officiated by Maclean High School Year 10 Physical Activity and Sports Studies students.

On the Wednesday the library was opened to community members to explore past media articles, photographs and publications all documenting the rich and unique history of our area and Aboriginal Education.

On the Thursday Year 7 to Year 12 students were invited to participate in workshops that ran throughout the day in the library area and in the quad. This was finished off with a community BBQ for the entire school cooked by parents and community members, with all the BBQ food items being donated by Nungera. Thank you very much to those parents who started cooking 1200 sausages from 10am for them to be ready to be devoured by hungry teenagers at lunchtime.

In all, we are very pleased with how all the NAIDOC celebrations and activities went during the week. The success of the week is due to the staff, particularly our Aboriginal Education Officers, Sam Kapeen, Deborah Breckenridge, Krystal Randall and Anjanette Warburton. Special thanks also to all the students at Maclean High School for their interest, participation and assistance throughout our NAIDOC week.

Ms Liza Hamilton, Deputy Principal Instructional Leader - Aboriginal Students.

NAIDOC WeekNAIDOC celebrations were held in the school over the last week of Term 2 with a variety of activities that were organised by our Aboriginal Education Officers and supported by Maclean High School students and staff.

On the Monday there was a whole school assembly where students made speeches and performed musical and dance items. Throughout the week, in Pastoral Care, students looked at the theme Voice, Treaty, Truth and what it means on an individual, community, regional and national level.

Year 11 Biology Excursion to Woody HeadOn Wednesday, 12th June, Year 11 Biology students travelled to Woody Head. This field trip and prior work at school were part of a compulsory depth study and assessment task to investigate the ecology of the Woody Head rock platform ecosystem. The key inquiry question of what affect can one species have on another species was answered at the completion of the task.

Students identified and recorded the abundance of plant and animal species that existed on the rock platform using a transect and quadrat method. They also observed the wide vartiety of habitats available for these organisms within the rock platform.

With the data collected in the morning, students returned back to school in the afternoon and completed their report which included a food web and adaptations of some of the organisms to live on the rock platform. Ms Chris Fira.

Re: Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD)

Every year, all schools in Australia participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). The NCCD process requires schools to identify information already available in the school about supports provided to students with disability. These relate to legislative requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, in line with the NCCD guidelines (2019).

Information provided about students to the Australian Government for the NCCD includes: • year of schooling • category of disability: physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional • level of adjustment provided: support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice,

supplementary, substantial or extensive.

This information assists schools to: • formally recognise the supports and adjustments provided to students with disability in schools • consider how they can strengthen the support of students with disability in schools • develop shared practices so that they can review their learning programs in order to improve educational

outcomes for students with disability.

The NCCD provides state and federal governments with the information they need to plan more broadly for the support of students with disability.

The NCCD will have no direct impact on your child and your child will not be involved in any testing process. The school will provide data to the Australian Government in such a way that no individual student will be able to be identified – the privacy and confidentiality of all students is ensured. All information is protected by privacy laws that regulate the collection, storage and disclosure of personal information. To find out more about these matters, please refer to the Australian Government’s Privacy Policy (https://www.education.gov.au/privacy-policy).

Further information about the NCCD can be found on the NCCD Portal (https://www.nccd.edu.au).

If you have any questions about the NCCD, please contact the school.

Kind regards Greg Court Principal

SRC Westpac Rescue Helicopter DayThe SRC ran a fundraising day for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter on Tuesday, 2nd July. During assembly, donations were collected, photos of all those dressed in red and yellow were snapped and the student body was captivated by the story told by Zeke, who is a representative from the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. He talked about two spear fishermen who became lost at sea off 9 Mile Reef near Tweed Heads. As they drifted and swam towards shore they were being stalked by three great white sharks, events which were captured by their GoPros. Eventually they were found and rescued.

Zeke highlighted the importance of charitable organisations, such as the $500 contribution made by Maclean High School, in ensuring that patients get a free service when accidents or emergencies occur.

A sausage sizzle at lunch time was enjoyed by over one hundred staff and students. Thank you to all those who donated!

Mrs Danielle Hollis, SRC Coordinator.

Year 10 Design and TechnologyThe Year 10 girls Design and Technology class have been busy working on a number of collective projects. The girls have completed a unit of work that required them to design and create four projects that linked into each other. The first project saw the girls design and make an apron in Textiles, followed by designing a planter box to grow herbs. Whilst their herbs were growing the girls had to make a pizza board, learning new woodwork skills along the way, and finally they were able to cook a pizza of their own flavour, wearing the apron they made, using the herbs they grew and serving the pizza on their pizza boards. A fun and creative unit that the girls engaged in. There was some fantastic designs in each technology focus. Mrs Michelle Ellis.

Year 12 Hospitality H.O.T.E.L. SchoolYear 12 Hospitality students attended a three-day intensive course at SeaWorld Resort. These students were part of a program H.O.T.E.L. School, organised and run by Warner Bros. All students get to experience the many sectors within the Hospitality Industry over the three days. Mrs Michelle Ellis.

Dear Parent of Year 7 students,

Your child’s school is participating in LiteracyPlanet Word Mania USA, the biggest and most fun literacy competition in the USA. Word Mania is a fun and effective way for students to improve their literacy skills.

To participate children simply log in to their LiteracyPlanet account and click on the Word Mania icon, or download the free LiteracyPlanet Word Mania app. (iOS and Android).

Login: Will be given to them by their Science, History or Geography teacher.

How to Play?Word Mania is an interactive online word building game. Players are given a board of 15 randomly generated letters, and have three minutes to create as many words as they can. Every valid word formed earns points. Longer and more complex words score higher, and scores can be boosted by building valid words consecutively, and using special Gold and Diamond letter tiles.

Word building uses various literacy skills: phonemes, morphemes including affixes and plurals, spelling, word recognition, vocabulary and word knowledge.

Students can play as many times as they like, and the sum of the highest 50 game scores by at least five students from the same grade will be their school’s score for that grade level.

Important dates

Practice Round - 23 May 2019 to 9 August 2019Competition Rounds - 12 August 2019 to 23 August 2019.Final Round - 28 August 2019 to 30 August 2019.

Long Way Home Local Writing CompetitionKaia Mercy has won first prize in the secondary division of the local writing competition ‘Long Way Home’. She has written a short story about Ulgundahi Island where her grandfather Lester Mercy spent his childhood. It resonated heavily with the judges particularly as the theme this year was ‘to the island’. Kaia has won ten tickets for herself, some lucky classmates and a teacher to the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival in August.

Here is an excerpt.“It was my home. The place where I grew up. My special place. Those words will forever be ingrained into my head. It goes to show how much my family loved it. I wish that I could see it. I wish that I could experience the things my aunties and uncles and grandfather did before me. I’m sitting across the river right now with the water gently splashing against the rocks. It’s like a soothing lullaby, it’s just so calm and peaceful, just like my grandfather.”

On behalf of the school we would like to congratulate Kaia and look forward to reading more of her stories, hopefully after the Byron Writers’ Festival.
