Hisreputation was that of a dynamic, structured, and sometimes surprisingteacher, who introduced innovative andunusual perspectives in psychology. Hehasthusfamiliarizedseveralgenerationsof psychologists with the application ofthe chaos theory to our discipline, bypresentinghowcertainconfigurationsofattractors coulddetermine thebehaviorof individuals. Advanced students have also benefited from his practical skills throughcoursesarticulating theoriesand interventions. His classeswereparticularlyappreciatedbystudents, butalsorecognizedbypractitionersandemployers.Professor Dauwalder has been very active in the field of scientific research and itsvalorization, especiallybycollaboratingwiththeLifeDesignInternationalResearchGroup.HeisalsooneofthemembersofthegroupthatfoundedtheESVDC,ofwhichhewasthefirst President. IDIDITMYWAY(50yearsoferrors)ByProfessorJean-PierreDauwalder,UniversityofLausanneFromscientific‘facts’tosubjectiverealitiesWhenIstartedstudyingpsychologyfiftyyearsago,wewere16personsintotal(professor,assistantsandstudents)attheUniversityofBern (Switzerland).Today theyare100 timesmore. We trained and developed psychological tests andfocused on their psychometric qualities. I painfully had tolearn that most carefully calculated scores never explainindividualbeings.Keyevents formewere: to assist at JeanPiaget’s(1896-1980)80thanniversary,discoveringhisideasonpermanentevolutionofhumanbeingsbyassimilationandaccommodation; to discover the powerful tool of listeningskills (empathic understanding, unconditional positiveregard and congruence) developed by Carl Rogers (1902-1987); and - later on - the paramount importance ofinteraction of individuals with their contexts, and thethereby resulting co-evolution and embodied cognition, investigated by Francisco Varela (1946-2001). Today, Ibelieve that each individual evolves as a unique learningsysteminhisparticularcontexts. From‘traitsandfactors’topeopleincontextThen, doingresearchinsocialpsychiatryandcommunitymentalhealth, fortyyearsago,Isought to better understand the difficult deinstitutionalization of chronic psychiatricpatients.Interviewingaformermountainfarmer,hospitalizedafteraheavyburn-out(termnot yet admitted then), while his best friend took over his farm and even his wife, Iunderstood,thatthismanhadnoplacetogo.Keepinghis‘ecologicalniche’,workinginthegardensofthepsychiatricclinic,wasafarbetterchoice,thanforcedrehabilitation.Ihadtolearn that diagnoses might change with time and perspective. Sometimes, classifyingpeopledoesnothelp them.Theyneed theirownpaceandcontexts tokeepmoving.Keypersonsformewere: AlbertBandura, whodevelopedsocial learningtheory,self-efficacyorhumanagencyandwhoacceptedmyinvitationat theUniversityofLausanne in1986;Luc Ciompi who enhanced our understanding of continuous interaction of affect andcognition in schizophrenia; and John Krumboltz who added the idea of plannedhappenstance, a way of integrating arbitrary events in our lives. Today, I believe thatpeoplepermanentlyco-constructtheiridentities,withandwithintheirmovingcontextsoflife.From‘problem-solving’toself-organizationLater on, becoming a teacher at different universities, thirty years ago, I discovered thechallenge of interdisciplinary collaboration and anticipating trends in science. Co-organizingaseriesofinterdisciplinarymeetingsonself-organizationandcomplexsystemsdynamics atMonteVerità inAscona, I had to learn, that innovation and creativity resultmuchmore from emergence of self-organizationwithin complex interactions, than from

guided problem solving techniques. Key people for me were: Wolfgang Tschacher, whoinvestigated psychotherapies by time-series analyses, showing the importance ofembodiedcognitioninhumaninteraction;RolfPfeifer, who–asacomputerscientistandpioneer inartificial intelligence–developedautonomousagents, robotsand investigatedartificial life; and Hermann Haken – coming from laser physics – who developed theinterdisciplinary ideas of synergetics andmodeling of self-organization. Today, I believethatchangeinhumanbeingscomesfrominsideandcounselorsmainlymayhelpanticipatetheemergenceofnewattractors,withinthelivesoftheirclients.From‘career’toadapt-abilityThebenefitsof a sabbatical atdifferentplaces in theUSAandCanada, twentyyearsago, confirmed my conviction, that career counseling suffered from lack of innovation, correlationalresearchandlinearreasoning.Ihadtolearnmoreaboutscientificreasoningallowing for modelization of non-linear dynamics. Key ideas for me came from: ‘kineticlogic’developedbyRenéThomasinBrussels;‘chaostheories’appliedtocareercounselingby Jim Bright in Australia or Danielle Riverin-Simard in Québec; and the ‘narrativeapproach’ to counseling developed by Marc Savickas in the USA. Today I believe, thatpeopleconstantlyre-inventthestoriesoftheirlives,whichtheytelltothemselvesandtheothers; this ‘ability to adapt’ or ‘adapt – ability’ brings (temporary) ‘order’ into the(permanent)‘chaos’ofongoinglife.Fromartificialintelligenceto(extended)life-designingOur landmark publication (Savickas, Nota, Rossier, Dauwalder, Duarte, Guichard, Soresi, van Esbroeck & van Vianen, 2009) on life-designing as a new paradigm for career-constructioninthe21stcentury,tenyearsago,wasabeautifulexperience,sharedwithastimulating group of friends. Together,we tried to identify the key shifts atwork in thefield of counseling at this time. But life and scientific reasoning are going on. Newchallengesarise:digitalreasoningactuallyevolvesfromlinearprogrammingtoalgorithms, deep learningandbrain-like artificialneuronalnetworks; tomorrow, autonomousagentswillreplacesignificantpartsofhumanworkforce;andinadecade, robotswill learnfromrobots, much faster than human beings. At the same time, humanity’s resourceconsumptioninexorablyexceedsourplanet’scapacitytoregenerate(e.g.evolutionofearthovershootdays).TodayIbelieve,that–inordertocopewiththesechallenges–mankindneeds to generate new ‘meta-competencies’, based on forecast, complex thinking withintuitionandscenario-building,addingnewdimensionstolife-designing…ButthiswillbeYOURchallenge!Forme,IshouldacceptthewordsofFrankSinatra:Andnow,theendisnearAndsoIfacethefinalcurtainMyfriend,I'llsayitclearI'llstatemycase,ofwhichI'mcertainI'velivedalifethat'sfullI'vetraveledeachandeveryhighwayButmore,muchmorethanthisIdiditmyway

SheisalicensedCareerandGuidanceCounsellorwith a post graduate degree from theUniversity of Iceland. María is a member ofthe Icelandic Association of Career andGuidance Counsellors (FNS). Her researchconcern assessment instruments used incareer counselling and guidance, careerdecision-making, and career choiceinterventions for upper secondary schoolstudents finishingmatriculationexaminationthat determines their eligibility to attenduniversity. In her work as director of theUISCCC, María is responsible for developingthecareerandguidanceservicesforregisteredandprospectiveuniversitystudents, qualityof the services, personnel administration, finances, aswell as national and internationalprofessional collaboration. She has for years beenresponsible for practical training ofmasters’ students at theUISCCC andhas done someparttimeteachinginthemaster’sprogramme.Dr. María Dóra Björnsdóttir submitted to the ESVDC early researcher award a studyentitled “Evaluation of career interventions. Short- and long-term outcomes forstudents finishinguppersecondaryschool in Iceland”.Theaimofthisfieldstudywasto assess the impact of two short career interventions on students finishing theirmatriculation exam from seven upper secondary schools in Iceland. ParticipantsintheIDI,CIP,andcontrolgroupsrangedfrom17to28yearsold,59.8%werefemale, and about 91% were born in Iceland. Participants’ degree of career indecision(Abramsetal.,2013),careerdecisionself-efficacy(Betzetal.,2005;Betz&Klein,1996),andgloballifesatisfaction(Dieneretal.,1985)wasassessedatpre-test(N=468),post-test(N=336),andfollow-up(N=225),butparticipants’careerthoughtswereonlyassessedatpre-test and post-test (Sampson et al., 1996). Because of the quasi-experimental studydesign, participants’ gender, age, grades, and parents’ education were used to adjustparticipants scores on themeasures. Oneweek after the intervention period (post-test),participants in the CIP group revealed significantlymore career decision self-efficacy ascomparedtothecontrolgroupandsignificantlymoregloballifesatisfactionascomparedtotheIDIgroup.Attheone-yearfollow-up,thethreegroupsdidnotdiffersignificantlyincareer indecision, career decision self-efficacy, and life satisfaction. Furthermore, participants’ primary career choices after their matriculation examwas not statisticallydifferentbetweengroups.Nationally, the results offer valuable information about effective career interventions forcounselors, educational institutions, and authorities in Iceland. First, upper secondaryschoolstudentsseemtoneedmoreorganizedorstructuredcareerinterventionsthanweregenerally available to them at the time of the study. Second, the cognitive informationprocessingtheoryandcounselingmodelseemtobeusefulforstudents, atleastintheshortterm.Third, the fact that a long-term impactwasnot confirmed supports the conclusionthatstudentsneedmoreguidance, evenfromanearlyage. Thus, itshouldbebeneficialfortheIcelandicauthoritiestoimplementanationalpolicyincareercounselingandguidanceat all educational levels (Kjartansdóttir et al., 2015). Internationally, the contribution ismainlytwofold.ThisstudyaddssupporttoindicationsthatcareerinterventionsbasedonCIP theoryareeffective for individuals indifferentcountriesandcultures (Brown,2015)andindicatestheimportanceofstructuredcareerinterventions(Whistonetal.,2003).

ThemeCareerguidanceandcounsellingisfrequentlyviewedasacombinationofprovidingpeoplewith career-related information and supporting them in making decisions about theireducation and work. However, career support also has an educational component: Forexample, in assisting clients in the preparation of application materials. Or in teachingclientshow to find labor-market information themselves.Or inpreparing clients tohavedifficultconversationswiththeirparentsortheiremployers.Whenitseducationalcomponentisforgottenorignored,careerguidanceandcounsellingcannotunleashitsfullpotential.Byincorporatingcareereducationinourpractice,wecanempowerpeopletomastertheircareer-relatedchallengesautonomously;wecansupportthem in attaining more control over their career development; in becoming moreindependent.

For this purpose, we need topromote citizens’ careermanagement skills (CMS). However, many questions arisewiththisrealization:− Whatarethecareermanagementskillsthatactuallysupportclientsinmasteringtheir

meaningfuldifferencesbetweennationalcontexts,labormarkets...?− How can career professionals effectively support clients in developing their career

managementskills?Whatapproacheswork? Why?Andwhatiftimeisverylimited?− How canwe assess, howwell our clients are already prepared to deal with career-
