Open to an extended 5am (maybe later) PLu will of course be playing on the evening/morning but the line-up will be a full complement of bristol’s finest and maybe a surprise guest from further afield...

PREVIEW NIGHT

molotov Jukebox at The Fleece

“Sweaty” is how Molotov Jukebox describe their fans. Go to any of their gigs and you won’t find a single person not throwing themselves about to Molotov’s fan-branded ‘Gypstep’. The band is fronted by an accordion playing Natalia Tena, who anyone with a set of eyes and a screen will recognise from cult film and television series Harry Potter and Game of Thrones. Their sound is an extremely provocative appropriation of genres ranges from gypsy to swing, through latin soul and calypso to disco and dubstep, or simply Gypstep.“it was a coin termed by a fan” Natalia tells us. “A lot of the time when we described our music, it was so long-winded we pretty much got bored half way through the description. it is an amalgamation of styles, which is why we call it Jukebox. “if one day we feel like doing a Cumbia-style song, or another day more soul songs we can do it. And it’s always got that driving beat behind so we just thought, yeah fuck it, Gypstep.” Molotov Jukebox have gained their mass following largely through their reputation for showing you a good time. if you go to a festival and they’re on the line-up (which they likely will be), someone is sure to tell you they’re a ‘must see’. And once you’ve seen them you’ll be hooked, off to tell the next person to check out this band. “We just enjoy what we do so much. it’s such a privilege to stand in front of people that actually want to fucking listen to you and are dancing. And when i see people singing our lyrics, i literally want to die. That’s it, i’m done. i could die tomorrow. it’s so beautiful.”

“Slowly but surely we picked people up. Adam, our drummer is one of Sam’s oldest school mates. And he’d worked with Tom the bassist and Tom’s always worked with Rammi, our drummer, they’ve known each other since they were kids. They had their bar Mitzvah at the same time and all that shit.“We’ve gone through so many musicians, about 17. Some of them have left, some of them we’ve chucked. but now we’ve got it really how we want to keep it.” They’ve been in their current line up for 7 months now and are doing better than ever, with their debut album Carnival Flower released earlier this year to rave reviews. The party-band-turned-serious have played sellout gigs to packed crowds and festivals across europe, the uK and Latin America. And finally, we couldn’t let her leave without asking about Game of Thrones: “Obviously it’s amazing and opens up so many doors and you meet so many amazing people you learn from - and you’re telling a mad, amazing, beautiful story with a great script - but you don’t really realise how big it is when you’re doing it.“because i was there from the beginning i didn’t know what it was going to be, obviously it was HbO, but i didn’t know it was going to become the phenomenon that it is. And by the time you’re doing Season 3 people just know you - it’s really weird. You forget how much it impacts people, it’s great.”

“It’s such a privilege to stand in front of people that actually want to fucking listen to you and are dancing.”

Thursday December 11 The Fleece www.thefleece.co.uk interview by Rachel Morris

Natalia learnt to play the accordion while in bristol, visiting with a theatre company called Kneehigh, where she starred in a stage adaption of Angela Carter’s Nights at the Circus at bristol Old vic. “i love the Old vic,” Natalia tells us. “i love that place so much!”“The director of Kneehigh, emma Rice is amazing because she makes the actors do everything - i had to learn trapeze! And we were rehearsing once in this big house and there was all these fucking instruments in an attic and she pulled them all down and was like, ‘everyone just pick one’. it was a bit like being in a pound, everyone picked one that suited them and it was the same for me with the accordion.” The band originated through Natalia and vocalist and violinist/ fiddler, Sam Apley, who originally met in another band before deciding to start their own.

eatseverything.com soundcloud.com/eatseverything @eats_everything interview by Rachel Morris

eats everything aka Dan Pearce is high on the list of the best producers and DJs to emerge out of bristol’s bass central, storming onto the scene with his aptly named ‘entrance Song’ in 2011.The following months saw Dan named ‘best breakthrough Producer’ and ‘best british DJ’ by DJ Magazine in a whirlwind hype that doesn’t look set to die down. His long list of achievements include placing a very respectful number thirteen in Resident Advisor’s ‘Top 100 DJs’. He also holds the honour of becoming the only DJ ever to do two bbC Radio 1 essential Mixes within the space of a year. earlier this year, he launched his hugely successful edible series, hosting ‘parties’ with mega line ups across the uK, including a sold out edible at Warehouse Project. Next up, Dan is set to release a compilation for Hypercolour, called ‘Fries with That?’. You can catch him and the Hypercolour gang this month at The Marble Factory.

You’ve stayed in Bristol despite massive success, rather than moving to London like a few other Bristol-bred musicians like Julio Bashmore and Redlight. Why is that?As great as London is it’s a little mad and crazy for me to live there to be honest. i have grown up in bristol and all my friends live here still and it’s the best place to come back to after going away on tour.

A few years ago the house scene in Bristol was massive, whereas currently we’re seeing a bit of grime resurgence. Is this influencing the music you’re playing and producing? Not at all. i play more techno now than any other genre. Playing big stages and playing alongside the likes of Carl Cox and Jamie Jones means you have to play faster and bigger records.

You don’t seem to take yourself as seriously as a lot of electronic DJs. Do you think dance music needs to be more fun? Definitely, i am so lucky to do this job and a lot of the time i think some DJs forget how lucky they are to do this job.

Can you explain ‘Edible’ in a nutshell? At the moment it’s simply a platform for me to do parties, merchandise and in the coming year put some music out.

Has there been a stand out Edible event?i think Warehouse Project this October at Store Street was probably up there, playing with some of my close fiends likes Catz N Dogz and also playing with one of my heroes Laurent Garnier in that amazing space really was a highlight of the year. Also edible at Output festival in New York a couple of weeks ago was great.

After such a successful run of Edible events this year, you’re kicking off 2015 with an all-night set on New Years Day at Electric Brixton. Is the idea of entertaining a crowd for 8 hours daunting? Playing longer sets is one of my favourite things to do. The longer i

can play for, the more variation in my record collection i can show. New Years Day is going to be amazing and using the electric in brixton is going to be the perfect place to really dig deep in my record collection.

You’re headlining a night at Marble Factory next month, which you could say is more intimate than some of the venues you’re used to. How does that kind of set compare to a headline set to thousands of people at Loves Saves The Day last year? The more intimate show’s like Marble Factory really give me a chance to play slightly more groovy tracks, but at the same time playing heavier techno records in a small space sometimes works. it’s going to be a brilliant night and i’m really happy to be doing it with the Hypercolour guys.

Can you tell us about your new release for Hypercolour, ‘Fries With That?’? These mixes have been a labour of love for me, and something that i really wanted to get across in the right way. Disc One is a collection of records that i am really feeling at the moment and hope will stand the test of time as a mix CD that you can listen to for years to come, whilst Disc Two is basically a collection of ‘my classics’, either records i grew up with, ones that got me into house/techno, or i have discovered along the way and have become classics to me, even if i have only known them for a short while.

Dan Chandler is the Promotions Manager of the O2 Academy, Bristol. One of the most important live music venues in the South West, it caters for the varied musical tastes of the city, running up to five events in a week. Dan has helped bring some of the industry’s biggest names to Bristol - including recently snagging a surprise Snoop Dogg gig. We asked Dan all about his job...

How did you get into your current role?i started on the box Office and got more and more involved with the venue over the years.

Can you describe an average day at work?i look after all our local marketing, promotion, print & PR - so providing promoters with marketing plans, booking street team shifts, liaising with press, sending flyers/posters to print, managing poster / flyer distribution. i run all our social networks

as well, so show announcements, generating content, booking ads, etc. i’m also a duty manager at the Academy so sometimes i’m managing events, sometimes it’s emails and Photoshop. Production meetings about upcoming shows. Discussions about staffing levels for shows. Giving hire availability when needed. booking local support acts where needed. i can also be found Stage Managing at Grillstock, or doing artist liaison at v festival, Download and Secret Garden party. And the occasional jaunt to other Academy venues to rep shows like The Jagermeister Tour or Queens Of the Stone Age.

What do you love most about your job? The team i get to work with in bristol, and different challenges every day and the variation i get from doing events here and on other sites.

Best moment: Meeting iggy Pop and him saying, “Hi, i’m Jim, it’s nice to meet you.” He was wearing nothing but a towel and was absolutely lovely. And the Snoop Dogg show is pretty big! Or being involved with The Massive Attack, Portishead co headline charity show we did with Robert Plant and Damon Albarn supporting in 2005. What’s your favourite music venue in Bristol besides Academy?Thekla & The HarboursideAny advice to others trying to get into a similar role?Treat everyone like you wish to be treated. be honest and passionate about what you do.

ThoSE QUESTIoNS...ThoSE QUESTIoNS...

1.) What have you learned today? That emirates is one of my new favourite airlines.

2.) Favourite track of all time? impossible to say for sure, maybe brand New - The Quiet Things That No-One ever Knows. i’ve got some of the lyrics tattooed on me, anything by brand New is bound to be up there.

3.) Worst chart song at the moment?i don’t really listen to chart music, i hardly ever know what anything is so i doubt i could tell you the name. What’s that track that sampled Sir Mixalot recently? Anaconda or something?

4.) Who are your top 3 producers/ DJs right now? i just listened properly to the new Les Sins album, i’ve always loved his solo electronic stuff as well as his band. There’s so much great music around at the moment! DJ wise every time i’ve seen Seth Troxler, Jackmaster, Craig Richards or Move D i’ve been blown away, amongst others of course.5.) If you weren’t a DJ, what would you be doing instead? Well i was a manager in a bank complaints centre, not sure how long i’d have stayed doing that for. i count myself so lucky in being able to do this for a living.

6.) What was the last book you read? i just finished an ian Rankin book, one of the Rebus series, i’ve loved every one but sadly near the end now. This one was called Fleshmarket Close.

7.) Favourite thing on TV?i love watching Qi, i don’t watch loads of Tv & my friends all take the piss because i only have a rotation of a few programmes.

8.) Are you afraid of anything?Losing people important to me i guess, i can be afraid of my own thoughts sometimes, and sleep paralysis…that’s not cool.

9.) Tell us something people don’t often know about you...People are always surprised when i say i’m into golf, used to play a lot and trying to find time still now.

10.) What are you doing tomorrow?DJ-ing in Dubai tomorrow, got a full day there with one of my managers so hopefully get to see some sights.

1.) What have you learned today? That i’m still pretty good at pac-man. i actually learned that last night but i remembered it this morning and it felt like a revelation.

2.) Favourite track of all time? Crikey that’s a tough one. Depends what mood i’m in i guess but it’s a toss up between Girls Just Wanna Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper and Hard To explain by The Strokes. Saying that, right now i’m listening to The Sky is Falling by Queens of the Stone Ages and it’s making a case...

3.) Worst chart song at the moment?i honestly couldn’t tell you, man. i’m guessing the stuff they put on while you’re on hold to see is the current chart buzz? And i guess its pretty effective, because it doesn’t keep me waiting for long.

4.) s right now? Hospitality. The Sonics. Haim. That’s just mainly what i’m listening to now, i’m not over sure what’s currently trending in the facespacetweetchatsnaps of the hip.

5.) If you couldn’t work in music, what would you be doing instead? if i was smart enough, travelling through outer space trying to find out which little green man stole my toblerone. When i finally catch up with that slippery son of a bitch i imagine we’d have serious words.

6.) What was the last book you read? The Stand by Steven King.

7.) Favourite thing on TV?The Walking Dead.

8.) Are you afraid of anything?Zombies. Alive or dead.

9.) Tell us something people don’t often know about you...i have, without doubt, the best survival plan for the impending zombie apocalypse known to man. There is however not enough room on these pages, nor enough empathy in my heart to share it with any of you.

10.) What are you doing tomorrow? Nuthin’ but a g thang baby…

yes RebelsBand

Risen from the ashes of Fortune Drive, a band who very nearly ‘made it’ after signing with Shy Records, a branch of No.19 Records, Yes Rebels have emerged a pioneering force on the bristol Rock ‘n’ Roll scene, and are ready to remind the world of the passion, the drive and the talent real music can produce.

Lead singer and guitarist bobby Anderson is the son of Young Disciples’ singer Carleen Anderson (‘Get Yourself Together’ and ‘Apparently Nothin’), and the driving force of the group. Fuelled by the DiY ethics of the likes of Superchuck and Fugazi, Yes Rebels have made their music accessible to all, touring tirelessly for free across bristol and beyond and releasing their free ‘The Mixtapes’ in Spring 2013. Word of mouth is everything to these boys and the concept of The Mixtapes was simple: the fans get free music and Yes Rebels get a word of mouth reputation for being “kickass”.

Fans can visit their YouTube channel and if you like what you hear on a mix tape, share it and within 24 hours you’ll receive a link to download it for free - www.youtube.com/ yesrebels

Ben PearceDJ/PRoDUCER

To many, ben Pearce’s name is synonymous with ‘What i Might Do’, his oddly anthemic deep-house debut that dominated club floors across the world in 2012, whilst garnering support from the likes of Jamie Jones, Heidi and Pete Tong.

However, ben is very much an underground DJ first-and-foremost, aided in no small part by his vast musical knowledge and the ability to play across a wide range of musical genres. in fact, the Manchester-based DJ/producer has announced the launch of his new The Sextape Series of mixtapes which will move away from house and techno, and explore his love of disco, funk and soul.

Accompanying the release is a set of uK tour dates, stopping off at bristol’s Thekla on 9th December. Head to soundcloud for a free Sextape Series download to get you in the mood - soundcloud.com/ben-pearce-productions

ben Pearce also owns uK record label Purp & Soul, which centres around a tight knit group of talented artists with a distinctly uK sound, spreading itself over a wide range of genres.

December 11 // 9.30pm // Free

THURSDAY 4th DECEMBER: BEJEContemporary jazz by Milesian trumpeter David Mowat. Gutsy music with with grooves that swing, funk and samba through the mind-blowing European cocktail of double bassist Pasquale Votino (Andy Sheppard), drummer Paolo Adamo (Mankala) and pianist Anders Olinder (Glen Hughes, James Morton). Saxist Julien Alenda is unavailable tonight but guitarist Knud Stuwe (Barakka) is an equally stunning continental musician.

FRI 5th DECEMBER: K’CHEVEREAfro-Cuban dance and tropical rhythms played with tremendous style and panache, so much so that they are fast becoming one of the top bands in the UK. Since their initial conception the lineup has seen many changes, the latest of which has produced the show which must be witnessed tonight.

SAT 6th DECEMBER: HELELEHélélé is a unique infectious fusion of Afro-beat, jazz, Latin and funk led by Alphonse Daudet Touna. Joined by some of Bristol’s finest session musicians they have been packing dance floors across the UK with the hypnotic vocals and uplifting sounds of the balafon. Not to be missed!

THURS 11th DECEMBER: RICH O’BRIEN PROJECTThe Rich O’Brien Project is a formidable Nu-soul/Jazz-Funk outfit based in Bristol UK. With an explosive set merging grooves reminiscent of a Marcus Miller or Soulive record with ambient melodies that explore a range of musical styles, The Rich O’Brien Project’s modern blend of Nu-Soul, Jazz, Funk, and RnB styles is one that appeals to astute Listeners and Dance Floor goer’s alike.

FRI 12th DECEMBER: MOLLY & THE KINGSMolly and The kings are an upbeat Jazz quartet who perform slick arrangements of traditional standards and swingers. Molly’s unique soulful vocals offer the band a fresh and modern feel, giving them a prominent and distinctive sound within the Bristol Jazz scene...

SAT 13th DECEMBER: CONTRABAND BREAKS ENSEMBLECBE are a hard rocking live hip hop ensemble comprising key members of bands throughout the core of the Bristol underground. The crew’s live experience spans from beginnings at their ‘contraband sessions’ club night, to various festivals including Glastonbury, also opening for Arrested Development and even performing for an audience with the royal family! The current set is a breakbeat driven ride through old school party hip hop and beyond, fronted by an ever dynamic MC partnership.

THURS 18th DECEMBER: THE SCHMOOZEMBERGS‘The Schmoozenbergs are aficionados of gypsy jazz and swing, and they will delight you with their irresistible rhythms and lyrical melodies. Conjuring up the mood of 1930s Paris, two duelling guitars, a double bass and a violin are the ingredients for a bouncy, hip swinging sound. C’est magnifique!

FRI 19th DECEMBER: BE.IN BLUES XMAS SPECIALBrought together by their collective misfortune, their sufferance is tonight’s subject of musical exorcism for one night only. The Damn Busters welcome some troubled new faces to the festivities for this show including the immeasurably frustrated Ruzz Evans on guitar, sometime destitute Ron Whelan on double bass, and oftentimes hungry Henry Slim on blues harp. This will be upbeat and swingin blues music to shake off your woes just in time for the sprout invasion.

SAT 20th DECEMBER: FROMAGE EN FEUA musical melting pot for European cheese lovers, Fromage hit the manouche with more fervour than a pompidou on a pole. If the mystery of the eastern continent took a night off for a knees up, this 6 piece would probably be the house band. Perfect entertainment for the last festive weekend before xmas so don’t miss it!Disclaimer: Anyone actually setting fire to a cheese will be extinguished.
