The Light on the Hill
October, 2014
, 2011 From the Rector
Dear Friends in Christ,
Each of us has a role in our parish ministries. Some roles are of presence, coming to worship, attending
church school or taking part in coffee fellowship. Additional examples may be leading Christian Education,
being a lector, chalice bearer, leading prayers of the people, offering hospitality or maintaining our building
and grounds. The list goes on and on.
Because each of you give of your time and talents, our parish is a blessing to the world and to the people
who gather to worship here. Absent your gifts, little could be done.
Beyond the almost priceless gifts of presence and personal involvement, perhaps you have wondered what
your financial gifts make possible? How are our parish funds spent and what is there to show for them?
An exhaustive listing is not possible here, but I would like to highlight a few results supported by your
financial gifts. From January through the end of August (excluding June) I made 196 pastoral phone calls
and 219 pastoral visits, and 17 pastoral visits to hospital or nursing home patients. During that same time,
babies have been baptized and transformation of lives supported, day by day. All of our gifts have assisted
in care being provided for people recovering from illness, surgeries and at the time of the death of loved
ones.
As of August 31st, parish volunteers or I have met in Derby City Court with 36 victims of domestic violence,
offering them counsel as to available resources, along with a ministry of presence. Our financial gifts
supported sending twelve youth to Episcopal Camp for a week. Over two hundred hungry individuals were

fed at a St. John’s downtown Wichita “sandwich Saturday”. Families within the parish, as well as in the
community, have been financially assisted with medical and utility bills, automotive repairs, rent, along with
access to professional counselors and legal advisers. Parish Christian education for children, pre-k through high
school, continues to grow in size and capacity. Hundreds of Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, community members and area
Scout Leaders have used our facilities since the first of 2014.
Absent your financial gifts, large or small, all of these events might not have taken place. In the next few weeks
each household will receive one or more letters concerning our parish plans for 2015. We will all be asked to
prayerfully consider making our commitments of time, talents and treasure in support of St. Andrew’s many and
varied ministries.
I encourage each of you to talk together. Talk with those who are new to the parish as well as those who have
been here for years. Talk with Vestry members; talk with me. Let us know what you are thinking. What is going
well? What might you like to see changed? Let us know what is special and valued at St. Andrew’s. What are your
hopes, fears and joys?
God is faithful and sure. Trusting in God’s love and presence we will continue being Jesus hands in the world.
God’s peace, Tom+

Who’s In the Pew Next to You?
Vacation Bible School
Margaret Kinkead was born in Emporia KS and moved to Wichita in the
3rd Grade, when she married her husband Byron they moved to Derby to
be close to McConnell Air Force Base where he worked as the Head of the
Armament Shop for the Air National Guard. Margaret worked for 17 years
for Wichita Clinic as a Supervisor in the Dental Department and then in
Orthopedics.
Byron and Margaret were part of the original group that founded St.
Andrew’s. She discovered that “with a little money, a lot of work and a lot
of faith, working together with no matter how little you have you can
accomplish anything with the Lord. I can now sit back and watch it grow in
to something we didn’t even imagine could happen! It’s wonderful to see people I knew as children coming to
church with their children and even their grandchildren!”
Margaret is currently the Chairman of Outreach, is a Greeter with her granddaughter, provides Coffee Hour with
her daughter and family and also organizes meals for shut ins, for anyone who is sick, or a family in need. In the
past she has been a Sunday School teacher, Chairman of the Woman’s Auxiliary, and everything else except Altar
Guild, which she recently decided to “give it a whirl”.
Margaret loves to travel and has a large circle of friends that get together to play cards, games and take day trips.
Family is very important to her and the 17 of them make it a point to get together at least three times a month.
Soon she will begin volunteering at Wesley Hospital. She is hoping that she will be delivering flowers and cards
to patients. “When Byron was in the hospital so much I saw how important it was to the patients to receive those
little gifts of love”.

Father Tom will be leading a discussion of the book If God is Love, Rediscovering Grace in an
Ungracious World, by Philip Gulley and James Mulholland. The group will be gathering Wednesday evenings, 7;00 pm, October 1,15,22,29 and November 5th. The reading for the first meeting is "A note from the authors" and chapters 1 & 2. (Pages 1-48). It is fairly easy reading. The concepts, outlooks and implications are laid out clearly. Please contact Fr. Tom if you are interested in attending or if you have any questions.

Altar Flowers
One of the Altar Guild’s responsibilities is to adorn our altar with beautiful flowers. They have decided to ‘resurrect’
the calendar to sign up to dedicate flowers for a special occasion, in memory or honor of something, for a
thanksgiving… The calendar is on the information board in the Guild Hall. The only time the church does not have
flowers on the altar is durlng Lent and and Holy Week. Anyone interested in signing up may sign the calendar, email
or text Ruth Weber ([email protected], 316-650-7690) or call the church office. A donation to offset the cost of
the flowers is requested but not required.
New Beginnings registration now is open
For the first time, New Beginnings will be offered in the fall: Nov. 7-9, at Good Shepherd, Wichita. This weekend spiritual
retreat is for students in grades 6-8 of the current school year, with high school youth serving on staff. New Beginnings focuses on the two greatest commandments: loving God with all our heart, mind and strength, and loving our
neighbors as ourselves. The priority registration deadline is Thursday, Oct. 23. There will be a staff planning day for high school students and adults
on Saturday, Oct. 18, from 1:30 - 3:30 pm at St. Andrew’s, Emporia. More information, registration forms and a poster are available on the youth website, http://edokyouth.wordpress.com/new-

October 4 – Saint Francis of Assisi
Francis, the son of a prosperous merchant of Assisi, was born in 1182. His early youth was spent in harmless revelry
and fruitless attempts to win military glory. Various encounters with beggars and lepers pricked the young man’s
conscience, and he decided to embrace a life devoted to Lady Poverty. Despite his father’s intense opposition,
Francis totally renounced all material values, and devoted himself to serve the poor. In 1210 Pope Innocent III
confirmed the simple Rule for the Order of Friars Minor, a name Francis chose to emphasize his desire to be
numbered among the “least” of God’s servants. The order grew rapidly all over Europe. But by 1221 Francis had lost
control of it, since his ideal of strict and absolute poverty, both for the individual friars and for the order as a whole,
was found to be too difficult to maintain. His last years were spent in much suffering of body and spirit, but his
unconquerable joy never failed. Not long before his death, during a retreat on Mount La Verna, Francis received, on
September 14, Holy Cross Day, the marks of the Lord’s wounds, the stigmata, in his own hands and feet and side.
Pope Gregory IX, a former patron of the Franciscans, canonized Francis in 1228, and began the erection of the great
basilica in Assisi where Francis is buried.
October 23 – Saint James, of Jerusalem
In the Gospel according to Matthew and in the Epistle to the Galatians, the James whom we commemorate today is
called the Lord’s brother. Other writers, following Mark’s tradition, believe him to have been a cousin of Jesus. Certain
apocryphal writings speak of him as a son of Joseph’s first wife. Whatever his relationship to Jesus—brother, half-
brother, or cousin—James was converted after the resurrection. Eventually, he became Bishop of Jerusalem. In the
first letter to the Corinthians, Paul says that James was favored with a special appearance of the Lord before the
ascension. Later, James dealt cordially with Paul at Jerusalem, when the latter came there to meet Peter and the
other apostles. During the Council of Jerusalem, when there was disagreement about whether Gentile converts
should be circumcised, James summed up the momentous decision with these words: “My judgment is that we should
impose no irksome restrictions on those Gentiles who are turning to God”. Eusebius, quoting from an earlier church
history by Hegesippus, declares that James was surnamed “the Just.” He was holy, abstemious, did not cut his hair
nor oil his body, and was continually on his knees in prayer, interceding for his people. “As many as came to believe
did so through James,” says Hegesippus.James’ success in converting many to Christ greatly perturbed some
factions in Jerusalem. According to Hegesippus, they begged him to “restrain the people, for they have gone astray to
Jesus, thinking him to be the Messiah ...we bear you witness that you are just ...Persuade the people that they do not
go astray ... we put our trust in you.” They then set James on the pinnacle of the temple, bidding him to preach to the
multitude and turn them from Jesus. James, however, testified for the Lord. Thereupon, they hurled him from the roof
to the pavement, and cudgeled him to death.
