Screenpainting April 28 1 session Thursday Program #11FM16

“Row houses”, scrubbed marble steps, and Painted Screens are all cherished emblems of Baltimore. It was 1913, Wil-liam Oktavec, a Czech immigrant and grocer, couldn’t stand the harsh sunshine streaming through his window onto his fresh vegetables and spoiling them. To dim the light, he painted colorful fruits and vegetables on the out-side of his window screen. Customers noticed how you could see out of the window but couldn’t see in. This appealed to them as their close-packed city houses did not have privacy that they missed from their homeland. Thus, by the 1930s an estimated 100,000 painted screens adorned the Charm City’s doors and windows. Materials to bring: a clean window screen with no holes, tears or clogs. Minimum size 18”x18” (bathroom screen), maximum 30”x30”, aluminum, nylon or fiberglass mesh but not fiberglass for ease of painting. Paints and brushes will be supplied (annascreenart.com).
