Offertory – Stuck in the Past? Are you living in the past? Wouldn’t it be nice if the bills we
pay each month were the same as they were ten, or five or
even one year ago? Unfortunately they are not. That is the
same with the bills paid by the church. Are you still giving the
same amount from five or ten years ago? Isn’t it time to give
the church a raise? Don’t let your offering be stuck in the
past. Bring it back up to the present or even better, send it
into the future. Increase your offering today and live in the
future. Live in the future of your church.
Support the church. Don’t let the church support you. Stand
tall, give to the church, and proudly shout that I am a rock. I
am the foundation that supports my church.
Family Stewardship Corner
God created the world and everything in it. As
stewards of this world, we work toward a deep
appreciation of all creation, respect all human
life, and preservation of the environment.
Discuss how each family member is a steward
of the world. What actions have they done/
continue to do each day?

“Laudetur Jesus Christus!” (Praised be Jesus Christ!)
It is hard to imagine that this Sunday is already Pentecost. It seems
like only yesterday we received ashes on our foreheads and were
singing “These Forty Days of Lent.” Now as we celebrate today’s
Solemnity of Pentecost we have the celebration of the Sacrament of
Confirmation to look forward to this Wednesday, May 22nd at 7:00
PM. We are pleased to welcome Bishop Peter J. Jugis who will confer
the Sacrament of Confirmation and be the Principal Celebrant at Holy
Mass.
During the month of June, several important events will be taking
place here at Our Lady of Grace. We will be hosting the second in
our series of organ recitals. Our guest organist for this event will be
Dr. Andre Lash who is a professor at UNCG. Check the bulletin for
more information. All are invited to attend. Also during June we will
have a Eucharistic Procession immediately following the conclusion
of the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday, June 2nd. This procession, during which we carry Our Lord present in the Blessed Sacrament, will
march around the parish property before returning to the high altar for Benediction. Check the bulletin for more details. We hope
our whole parish will join us for this wonderful and powerful witness to our faith.
June also will mark a period of transition, as a number of members of both Pastoral Council and Finance Council complete their
terms of service and new members begin their terms of service to and for our parish family. The hard work and dedication of our
current members has raised the standard very high for our newest members. I thank them for that and for their cooperation and
guidance during their term of service. As a parish family, we are very proud of them.
Barring any unforeseen delays, the tentative date to relocate the parish offices to St. Joseph’s House is the week of June 10th. As I
mentioned previously, this date is subject to change. Should it change, we will announce the new date in the bulletin and on the
parish website. To date, only two people have come forward to volunteer to help pack boxes and move furniture during that week.
We need YOUR help! Please give Jenny a call and we’ll add your name to the list! Many hands make for light work! Please
remember, that during the week of the move, the parish offices will be closed for all business and phone calls including Mass cards,
etc. Also, please make a note of our new mailing address: 2201 W. Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27403.
Finally, just a reminder and invitation to anyone who has yet to make a pledge for this year’s DSA: We are so very close to our goal,
but we need the help and sacrifices of ALL our parish family members if we are to meet our goal. My heartfelt appreciation goes out
to all who have made a pledge. Thank you!
We have a lot of work ahead of us, but if we stay positive and focused and continue to pull together, Our Lady of Grace Church will
continue to stand as a beacon of faith, hope and love in our community as she has for the last 60 years.
Our Lady of Grace, pray for us!
As Catholics, we know that the Eucharist is the Source and
Summit of our lives. Come join us as we bear witness to
our faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Holy
Eucharist with a Eucharistic Procession around our
neighborhood on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Sunday, June
2nd, 2013.
The procession will begin at the conclusion of the 10:00
AM Mass. All parish family members are invited to join in
the procession. Our Lady of Grace Students are
encouraged to participate in the procession and to wear
their uniforms to Mass that day.
PLEASE NOTE: To allow time for the procession to return to
church for Benediction, the 11:30 AM Mass on Sunday,
June 2nd will begin at 12:00 NOON.

What is the Latin Schola?
It is short for "Schola Cantorum" (school of singers) which
serves at the traditional Latin Mass used by the Church from
1570 until 1962, when the last Roman Missal in the old rite
was issued.
The “Tridentine” form (named for the Council of Trent in the
16th Century) was never suppressed but most bishops did
not promote it until Pope Benedict XVI declared in 2007 the
two forms are valid and can both be celebrated in one parish
without engendering division among the faithful. There is
hope that the two forms will enrich each other over time if
used with equal attention and resources.
Latin is used for the Tridentine Liturgy, although the readings
from Scripture are commonly repeated in the local language,
as is the homily of course!
There are small differences in the Liturgical Calendar; for
example, Christ the King is always celebrated at the end of
October and not the Sunday before Advent. Also, there is one
cycle of readings for the year, not three.
Many older Catholics remember the pre Vatican II Mass
mostly as the “Low Mass” with no dialogue with the
celebrant and four hymns. But there were (and still are)
other options. In the “Missa Cantata” (Sung Mass, not a High
Mass) there are chanted dialogues with the celebrant, the
Ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) sung by
all or by the schola (in chant or in choral arrangements), and
the Propers (specified texts for the Entrance, between the
readings, for Offertory, and Communion) sung by the
Schola. Four hymns (in Latin or the local language) can also
be added!
Our Lady of Grace takes full advantage of the options, since
we have a capable schola director and our pastor has an
excellent baritone voice!
During Offertory, Communion, and sometimes before or after
Mass, we like to offer choral anthems or solos or duets when
appropriate music and texts for the Sunday can be found.
In summary, it’s a rich banquet and a special treat for the
singers in the schola who are kept busy throughout the Mass
singing in various historical styles and in two languages. We
can, and do, draw on centuries of music written for the
Church!
Our OLG Schola currently serves about every other week at
the 1:30 PM Missa Cantata. This allows two weeks of
rehearsals for each Mass.
Though the Propers are different for each Sunday or Feast
Day in the Liturgical year, the Ordinary and the hymns don’t
have to be, so gradually the amount of new music to learn
becomes less formidable with experience and
practice. Reading the traditional Gregorian chant notation is
a new experience, but one easily mastered with the help of
the director and the support of the rest of the
choir. Pronunciation is very easy, with only five Latin vowels,
and no exceptions to the rules.
After a short initial period of training, a schola singer can
participate as best fits his/her schedule, practicing at home
with the mp3s supplied, and with everyone two weeks
before, and the week before each Mass.
We find that the flow and structure of the liturgy become
familiar and appealing over time, and serving at Mass
becomes more rewarding every time!
Please direct inquiries to Brian Marble at
[email protected]. We welcome new singers (ages 15-
65) anytime during the year, and preliminary training can be
arranged at everyone’s convenience.
