Each of us lives in our own mess. We all have our own particular struggles. We tend to look at other people and think the grass must be greener on their side of the fence. When we really take the time to talk to them however, we find that they have hardships, too. No one can take away those bad times, when we feel isolated and all alone, lacking help and support. A little en- couragement can go a long way. We need to hear another voice remind us, “Everything’s gonna be okay.” Most of us can remember people who gave us encour- agement when we needed it the most. Maybe they didn’t say anything, their presence communicated support and appre- ciation. They may have helped us to see for ourselves the value in what we were doing. When it comes to our relationship with the Lord, we all need encouragement there, too. St. Paul frequently called on members of the church community to encourage one an- other. Paul reminds us that we each have a role to be minis- ters of encouragement to each other. Jesus was very active in the work of giving encourage- ment to all the people. One of the ways that the Lord encour- aged others was by praying for them. One of the ways we encourage one another is by praying for them. We pray for one another that our faith may not fail, and then, when we do fail, we would always turn back. Our turning back helps to strengthen and encourage others. We encourage others by giving them a hopeful vision. The church of today, even here in our own diocese, needs people to remind us of God’s vision for our lives and for our world. This is an important call of the priest of a parish, but we all need to do this for one another. The readings this week remind us of Jesus’ command to love one another. In the Old Testmanent there was a com- mandment to love: “you must love your neighbor as your- self.” In the New Testament, Jesus adds to that command- ment, “just as I love you, you must also love one another.” The love of Jesus was a serving love. He showed us that model of love when he stooped down to wash the feet of his disciples. He stooped down to all who lived on the margins: the poor, hungry, sick, women, people of different ethnic or religious groups and those whose skin color was different from his. The love of Jesus is merciful and forgiving. He is not a God of revenge or punishment. Our own decisions and ac- tions decide that, not God’s desire. The love of Jesus is constant. He is not a moody God who loves us one day and doesn’t on another. Jesus’ love was a lifelong commitment to service, for- giveness and encouragement, even when things got very dif- ficult. Going to Church, to Mass, praying rosaries, attending novenas are no guarantee of being a true disciple of Jesus, unless they lead us to practice the kind of love Jesus himself showed us during his life here on earth. The faith formation children at a nearby church one Sunday morning did a skit to show their parents how Jesus wants us to love one another. The first child received a phone call from Jesus saying he will be coming along that day and will want some help. Two children keep a lookout for Jesus. While they were waiting, a little child came along who had scraped her knee and was crying. She needed help. One of the two reaches out to help her, but the first child said she didn’t have time because she was still waiting for Jesus to arrive. In the end, however, she went to help. At the end of the day, the girl receives another phone call from Jesus. He thanked her for helping him earlier that day. She said she didn’t understand and angrily told him that she waited and waited for him to arrive, but he failed to show up. Jesus then explained to her that he did come in the form of the child that needed help. We can all be ambassadors of encouragement and show the love of Jesus to all we meet. Jesus strongly insists, “Love one another, as I have loved you.” When we do, we show our love to Jesus himself.
