Daniel 7:r3-:"4 1 Revelation r:5-8 / John 18:33b-37
A few weeks ago, our country elected a president. Though at this writing I don'tknow the results, l'm ceftain that whether your candidate won or lost you're
relieved that the endless speeches, debates, and recorded phone calls are over.
It's exhausting to hear people endlessly promote themselves, whether it's forstudent-council treasurer or leader of the free world. We all grow weary of thepromises, the Iist of accom-plishments, and the often-false humility.
ln a timely contrast, today's readings invite us to re-flect on Jesus' kingship.
Jesus-the one in whom many candidates claim deep faith-is crowned our
ultimate leader, our king, in heaven. Yet his kingly leadership is so differentthan that of our leaders. The Book of Revelation claims he is "the one who is
and who was and who is to come." He's not in it only for four or eight years/
after which he'll retire to a comfortable coastal bungalow. Jesus' kingship is
everlasting-he'll never falter, fail, or retire.
Revelation also claims "every eye will see him, even those who pierced him."Unlike our pr.esidential eandi-dates, whose rhetoric divides the country, Jesus as
king brings people together. And he cerlainly didn't know the basic rules of self-
promotion-in today's Gospel, he refuses to claim the king title. lnstead, he
continu-ally points to his Father and their intimate connection.
We're probably used to thinking of Jesus aS our sav-ior, our friend, our brother.
But it's good to spend time this weekend pondering him as king' He's a
profoundly different leaderthan any president, prime minister, or parliament.
And forthis we can be deeply grateful.

Do you know who St. Augustine of Hippo is? One of his famous prayers is,
"Almighty God, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless tillthey find their rest in you" He lived a life of dissolute and was finally baptized.
His mother, Monica, prayed for him fervently and a bishop once consoled her
with these words, "the child of those tears shall never perish."6:oo p.m. Potluck suPper Movie at 6:45 p.m.

Last week at Mass, someone jostled fixe as I received
Communion, and I dropped the host on theJloor. I picked it up,
and the priest took it and gaue ?ne anofher.- Did I handle tlmt
correctly? Linda
- Dear Linda.
A -fhe Tridentine Missal, the Mass book from the Council ofTrent (1545-1,563), gave a lengthy procedure for picking up
the consecrated host, washing the area it had failen on, and
then washing the cloth used to clean up. This extended ritualdemonstrated a concern that not one particle of the host be
trampled underfoot.
We still revere the Body of Christ, but the current Ceneral
Instnrction of the Roman Missal no longer gives such lengthyprocedures, relying instead on the common sense and respect
of the priest and the communicant. If the host iails on the
floor, the priest or communicant should reverently pick it up
and set it aside lor later disposal by the priest. No orher ritualcleaning is prescribed.
If the Precious Blood is spilled, wash the area with water,
and then pour the water into the sacrarium' a special sinkusually located in the sacristy that drains directly into the
Earth instead of through the sewage system.
Sometimes, as in your case, dropping or spilling at
Communion can't be helped-but it should be a rate
occurrence. The host should be shared slowly as we
remember that the One who feeds us died so we might live.
