Pastor’s Letter August 19/20 Dear Parish Family, It seems to me that prejudice comes in more than one variety. There is the experience of looking down upon one group because of their race, their ethnicity, their orientation, or some other characteristic. Then there is the thinking that only one’s own particular race, gender, origin, or culture is important and valuable. It is this latter kind of prejudice, often called supremacy, which has been the source of some of the most heinous acts of oppression and violence in the course of human history. It is a particular concern to today’s religious communities that we see this kind of prejudice in our own society. In 1963 the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King wrote a letter from a Birmingham jail. This widely circulated letter was written mainly to fellow pastors and by extension to their religious communities. Dr. King challenged them to understand that that the solution to racial prejudice would come not from courts or legislatures but from communities taking seriously the gospel call to equality and unity. In the gospel there is no place for supremacy of any kind. In the preaching of Jesus, greatness comes from humility and service, not from power and position. The first disciples learn that God shows no partiality and the saints and sinners, gentiles and pagans, are just as much God’s people as the Israelite community to which Jesus and the disciples belonged. The gospel teaches that to serve the poor is more important than wealth and that humble service is more important than any kind of power or privilege. Throughout our history this gospel principle has led us to understand the wrongness of any kind of prejudice, oppression, or hateful violence. As we listen day by day to the news of such hatred in our own land, it is important for us to heed Dr. King’s message and to understand that the kind of conversion we need will come not from the power of government but from the strength of religious convictions – our religious convictions. I think it is a particular concern that so many young people seem involved in hatred and violence. Youth should be a time of altruism and openness, not a time of hardened hatreds. It belongs to us to never fail to teach the gospel message of a common humanity. To borrow words from a song popular in my youth: Teach your children well. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

Reflections On the Gospel

August 20, 2017

It might seem that Jesus missed this scripture passage from Isaiah when he was learning the faith as

a child. Certainly his unusual, unexpected, and initially heartless behavior toward the Canaanite

woman would suggest that “he was absent that day.” But thanks to the uncompromising love this

mother had for her daughter and her unrelenting faith in Jesus, she was able to turn him around. By

the end of Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus has expanded his heart to include more than just “the lost sheep of

Israel.” We, too, can learn from the Canaanite woman and Jesus in their encounter. We can learn of a

love so great that it endures initial rejection and insult. We can learn the importance of persistence in

prayer. And we can learn that we, too, must be inclusive of all. Let’s not be absent from this

important lesson.
