He was selected out of all law enforcement agencies in the County, including the cities, highway patrol, and parks’ police, for his work in our community over the past nine years. Our congratulations and our thanks to Lt Mark who has made so many friends in the neighborhood with his genial and caring personality. COMMUNITY SUPPORTS MIKEY The Everglades area community rallied around on September 24 to support the family of 9-year-old Mikey Rain who is under the care of the Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital with serious health problems. Before the benefit kicked-off officially, County Commissioner Jim Coletta presented a resolution of commendation to Dwain Daniels who rescued 90-year-old Margaret Webb from the clutches of an alligator in front of her home at the end of August. Commissioner Coletta said, “My appreciation goes out to Dwain Daniels and all the caring people of the Everglades City area for their commitment to help with expenses during Mikey’s medical treatment. It was an honor to recognize the bravery of Dwain Daniels and to participate in your fundraiser." Commissioner Jim Coletta has graciously donated $250 from his Campaign account for a sponsorship to the Michael Rain, Jr, Family Fund. The highlight of this well-attended neighborhood fundraising event was the raffle of a Clyde Butcher print, but there was also much interest in a large HD-TV and many other donated prizes. Participants enjoyed the BBQ lunch and shopped at the various stalls while listening to live music from local groups. Kids had fun on a steamy hot day at the dunk tank where Lt Mark Milligan and Cpl Eddie Adkins were the first "dunkees". The younger set cooled off in several play pools, as well as playing in the bounce house and on the swings at McLeod Park. The organizers said they could not have had such a successful event without the cooperation of the community and the donations of food, raffle prizes, and auction items. Thanks to donors, to all the volunteers who gave their time, and for the support of our local sheriff's office. The Mikey Fund is still accepting donations: Michael Rain, Jr, Family Fund, P.O. From Savannah’s Eyes

Last weekend my family and I went to Wooten's Air Boat Tours and Swamp Buggy Rides. It was so much fun! There were a lot of huge crocodiles and alligators and a bunch of other animals like

otters, tigers and deer. We held an alligator and watched a person wrestle one. Plus, the funniest thing about that day was the tigers. Because my sister Lashaun has a purple cast on her leg, the Tigers didn't know what it was so one of them just started to chase Lashaun from one side of the cage to the other. It was funny because I have never seen that happen before, and the Tiger was running; so energetic! I had a great time and a great laugh, too! This past weekend on Saturday, September 24, there was a fundraiser at the park for a little boy named Mike Rain who lives in Copeland, a place by Everglades City. He is only 9 and is deeply sick. He is in and out of the hospital, and it is really sad to think about a little boy who has to stay in a hospital bed. So a lot of people got together to organize a fundraiser to help raise money for him to get better and for the family. I went over to help out with the bake sale and with some of the games. There were also a lot of auctions going on and some of the items were paintings by our famous art teacher at Everglades City School, Mr. Tribble. A lot of money was raised to help Mike and that is very exciting! I hope Mikey gets better and I pray every day that he gets out of the hospital and never gets sick again. Thanks to everyone who helped out at the park for the fundraiser! Volleyball season is still going on and we have won two games in a row and a lot more, so come to our home games and support our team! Go Gators!!

With Love and Hope, Savannah

P.S. They are still taking donations for Mike Rain Jr. so if you want to make a donation, checks can be taken to City Hall or mailed to P.O. Box 325, Everglades City, FL 34139.

Off the Shelf – Book Review “Clyde Butcher: Florida Portfolio II”

by Clyde Butcher reviewed by Patty Huff

Clyde Butcher is well known for photographing Florida landscapes with emphasis on the environment. This is Clyde’s third book on Florida. His first entitled “Portfolio One – Florida Landscapes” has sold out. The second book “Clyde Butcher, Florida Landscape” was published in 2001 and covered Clyde’s photographs taken between 1991 and 2001. His Portfolio II book dedicated to Oscar Thompson includes photographs from the time Clyde started photographing images of

Florida in 1983 and continues with his work through 2010. It is much more comprehensive that any of the previous books. There are 120 pages filled with 111 images, including 5 full spread pages. Also, he has included five historic manmade structures in black and white. Anyone who appreciates Clyde Butcher’s art will not be disappointed in his newest offering. The subtitle of the book is “Black and White Fine Art Photography Focus on Preservation” and that it does. The book is $40.00 and is available to preorder at www.clydebutcher.com or stop by the Clyde Butcher Gallery in Ochopee (between MM55 and 54), just 25 miles east of Everglades City, to view a copy of this incredibly beautiful book. It is being printed in Italy and available the end of October. The gallery is open 7 days a week from 10 am to 5 pm (closed holidays).

Fishing Report by Captain Bill Lindsay

October marks the beginning of fall fishing in the Everglades. Because of temperature changes and reduced rain fall, fish start to move. Large schools of bait fish will start to

migrate south, bringing Mackerel, Bluefish and Cobia with them. Trout slide onto the grass flats in greater numbers and can even be caught on top water plugs before the sun gets up too high. Snook should start to head for the backcountry. Plug casting will test your skills. Top water plugs are the most fun, but on bright sunny days, try going deeper with jigs or deep running plugs. Redfish fishing was very good all through September and should stay good this month. They move with the tide so “when” is more important than “where”. Sheepshead and Gag Grouper also move into shallow water and get around dead stumps and oyster bars. Captain Don Cochran has been hooking Tarpon and Permit on the Gulf wrecks. Captain Steve Huff has had good luck with Tarpon in the backcountry. I’ve had good Redfishing and have also found some Tarpon in the rivers at the first light.

Capt. Bill Lindsay lives in Chokoloskee and has been fishing in the Everglades National Park for over 30 years. In 1992 he was Master Angler of the MET Tournament. Capt. Lindsay’s telephone number is (239) 695-0314.

FLORIDA FLORA by Steve and Patricia Huff

Coconut Palm (cocos nucifera) The coconut palm has long been the landscape icon of the tropics. When it appears in your locale, you are pretty well assured of the warm sunny climate with which it is synonymous. The coconut palm has no known origin because of the capacity for the seeds to float and germinate on any tropical beach on the planet. Although there is only one genus and species, there are numerous subspecies, the two extremes being the Jamaican Tall which can reach heights of 100 feet and the Fiji Dwarf which rarely exceeds 25 feet. Their fruit and leaves provide numerous commercial products but the most endearing attribute would be the wonderful shade their swaying fronds provide on most tropical and subtropical beaches throughout the world. The downside to coconut palms is the potential for lethal yellowing disease. It is transmitted by a leaf-hopping insect and, without immediate recognition and treatment, will kill the palm rapidly. A number of the dwarf species seem to be more resistant to lethal yellow. As mentioned, the coconut palm fruit has many uses: the oil for cosmetics, the oil and milk for cooking; the clear liquid for drinking (and processed to create alcohol) and the meat for food (as in Mary Freeman’s famous coconut pies). The coconut palm with dark green pinnate leaves can grow up to almost 100 ft. The seed may be planted directly into the soil or started in a pot. We harvested some coconuts in our yard under an old and withering Jamaican Tall. Soon after the palm came down in a strong windstorm, we planted the newly germinated coconut on the site of its lost parent and it now exceeds 30 feet (as pictured above). A beautiful addition to our landscape!

TIME’s UP by Mike the Tax Guy

If you filed for an extension of time for your 2010 tax return, the October 17, 2011,

due date is rapidly approaching. You can file your tax return any time before the extension expires. You will owe interest on any tax not paid by the regular due date of your return, even if you qualify for the 2-month extension because you were out of the country. The interest runs until you pay the tax. Even if you had a good reason for not paying on time, you will still owe interest. There are lots of other consequences for paying late, including a late payment penalty of ½ of 1% of any tax not paid by April 18, 2011. It is charged for each month or part of a month the tax is unpaid. The maximum penalty is 25%. The late payment penalty will not be charged if you can show reasonable cause for not paying on time. Attach a statement to your return fully explaining the reason. Do not attach a copy of Form 4868 to your return. You are considered to have reasonable cause for the period covered by the automatic extension if at least 90% of your actual 2010 tax liability is paid before the regular due date of your return through withholding, estimated tax payments, or payments made with Form 4868. More good news; a late filing penalty is usually charged if your return is filed after the due date (including extensions). The penalty is usually 5% of the amount due for each month or part of a month your return is late. The maximum penalty is 25%. If your return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is $135 or the balance of the tax due on your return, whichever is smaller. You might not owe the penalty if you have a reasonable explanation for filing late. Attach a statement to your return fully explaining the reason. When you file your 2010 return, include the amount of any payment you made with Form 4868 on the appropriate line of your tax return. The instructions for the following line of your tax return will tell you how to report the payment. If you and your spouse each filed a separate Form 4868 but later file a joint return for 2010, enter the total paid with both Forms 4868 on the appropriate line of your joint return.

A reader asks "What is the S&P 500 Index?" The Standard and Poor's Index is a benchmark for U.S. stock market activity. It’s composed of 500 “large cap” companies selected by a group of analysts and economists. The stocks are chosen to represent overall economic activity and are weighted proportionately by their market value. When you hear that the S&P is up or down it is the weighted average of activity for these select companies. Another popular market measure is the 115 year old Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) which was at one time the most respected market index. The Dow is a price-weighted average of 30 publicly traded U.S. companies. Because the DJIA only contains 30 companies most investors believe that the S&P 500 is a better representation of the U.S. market. Other indexes are Value Line which is based on the geometric returns of approximately 1700 stocks and the EAFE (Europe, Australia, and Far East) which measures the international securities market and the FTSE Index (pronounced footsie) that represents the 100 most highly capitalized United Kingdom companies trading on the London Exchange. One thing these security market averages and indexes have in common is that they’re constructed to inform investors about changes in the market. Stay focused and invest accordingly. *Information obtained from third party sources considered reliable, but we don’t guarantee that facts cited are accurate or complete.

Florida Tales Clamed Up

by Chester Keene

On a cool morning before tourist season my friend, a life long commercial fisherman and city politician, came by the house and picked me up to go get some clams and swamp cabbage. Over back of the airport they were starting to expand the facility and gave him permission to cut the cabbage. After the cabbage was cut, we drove by jeep down to the pass to “stomp” clams. Taking our toes and poking along in the mud to feel them, sometimes a pitchfork could be used but he preferred the toe method. In a short while we had a bushel of clams, some were larger than the others. We headed back to clean them with a stop at the drive thru for some beer. Well, after we shucked out the clams and booted the cabbage, we decided to take a nap. Not long after we dozed off, the screaming of some creature woke us. The pile of discarded clam shells to our surprise had a live one left in it, and the blackbirds that were getting their share of the remains. One had stepped into an open clam that was overlooked, and it clamped down on its leg. The bird was screaming and flapping trying to get loose but had to be released by means of a small ball peen hammer. Well, so much for trying to get a nap. Anyway, the help had arrived and the cooking got under way with swamp cabbage, smoked mullet, clam chowder and sweet tea for all. Someone broke out the fiddle and banjo, and we partied till late night. Those were good times back in the day.

NOTE from Bea Frost

Blessings to you all. We miss you but are very happy where we live at The Lakes at Pointe West here in Vero Beach. Google it Linc is so busy doing what he loves to do. He is in his Power chair as it is hard for him to walk. He can walk about the apartment, our bus can take him out with his chair or I still drive and he can use his walker for the Drs. etc. We have met so many new friends and we all become like a big family. I still make my cards, have found an easy way of printing them as I give out so many, we average 12 Bdays each month and I put one on the shelf outside the apt door of the Bday person. Time for me to get going on our Christmas cards and I try to give a card per friend. Last year I figured it out, for the men who are now alone, it was the wife who sent out cards and they were so thrilled to receive my hand made card with Lincoln's Christmas letter. Linc doesn't sleep too well, so we went down stairs to the Cafe for breakfast and now he is taking a nap. He has been asked to be on the committee for our meals to make it right for the fine dinning it is. He had it figured out as the staff has never been trained of the how to do. God is so good, we are so thankful to have a safe living with built in Health care if needed. In His love, Bea

The Living Gulf Coast by Charles Sobczak

Painted Bunting (Passerina ciris) Other names: nonpareil / Status:

FL=declining, IUCN-NT / Life span: to 9 years / Length: 4.7-5.1 in. (12-13 cm) / Wingspan: 8-8.5 in. (20-21 cm) / Weight: 0.5-0.7 oz (13-19 g) / Nests: along the Eastern Seaboard to North Carolina, and a separate race nests in east Texas through Arkansas / Found: AC, near coast, mainland / Months found (in caps): JFMamjjasoND.

Perhaps the single most colorful bird that passes through Southwest Florida, the male painted bunting is a curious palate of blue, lime-green, red, and gray. The female is more of a greenish-yellow color and nowhere near as brilliantly colored as the male.

The painted bunting has two distinct populations: eastern and western. The eastern bird that comes through Florida generally winters in Cuba and Central America, while the western race winters in Northern Mexico. Some birds remain in South Florida for the winter; locating any during the summer is very difficult. One of the best places to find the painted bunting consistently is near the bird feeder located just off the main boardwalk at Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary in Collier County, where it comes to feed throughout the winter. This bird has one unexpected characteristic, especially because of its small size: the male is very territorial and aggressive toward other male buntings. Fights between rival males can become extremely animated, involving fierce pecking, beating each other with their wings, and grappling, sometimes resulting in the death of the defeated bird, a highly unusual outcome among avian rivals. The painted bunting is approaching threatened status primarily because of habitat loss in its eastern population. It prefers dense thickets and mixed pine and hardwood forests. A handful of birds never leave Florida, nesting along the southern edge of the great Eastern deciduous forest along the border of Georgia and Alabama. It is not adapting well to human alterations to the environment, although it can be spotted on occasion in urban locations.
