We do not remember days; we remember

Individuals from the majority group may

deny racism in the context of current

events because they are ignorant about

documented racism from the past.

- Results from a study conducted by

psychological scientists at the

University of Kansas and Texas A&M

University, Jan 2013 (Source: http://www.psychologicalscience.org/index.php/news/releases/claims-of-

Science fiction isn’t just thinking about the

world out there. It’s also thinking about

how that world might be—a particularly

important exercise for those who are

oppressed, because if they’re going to

change the world we live in, they—and all

of us—have to be able to think about a

world that works differently.

- Samuel Delaney

The Story So Far....

1) History consists of stories.

2) The value we place on these stories impacts the value we

see in ourselves.

3) History is also speculative, because it is based on our

interpretations of events across time.

4) Steampunk, as a creative storytelling method, may just

impact our lives as significantly history does

Research says that’s because while you’re engaged in fiction—unlike

nonfiction—you’re given a safe arena to experience emotions without

the need for self-protection. Since the events you’re reading about do

not follow you into your own life, you can feel strong emotions freely.

…[ ]The key metric the researchers used is emotionally transported, or “ ”how deeply connected we are to the story. Previous research has

shown that when we read stories about people experiencing specific

emotions or events it triggers activity in our brains as if we were right

there in the thick of the action.

- Adapted from study in VU University in Amsterdam regarding how—and to what  extent—fictional stories can change our real personalities., Jan 2013. (emphasis mine)

Beyond Victoriana is the oldest-running blog about

multicultural steampunk and retro-futurism--that is,

steampunk outside of a Western-dominant, Eurocentric

framework. Founded in 2009, Beyond Victoriana focuses on

non-Western cultures, underrepresented minorities in

Western histories (Asian / Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern,

First Nation, Hispanic, black / African & other marginalized

identities), and the cultural intersection between the West

and the non-West.
