At the Mass on Holy Thursday evening, a rubric in the missal indicates: At the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, there may be a procession of the faithful in which gifts for the poor may be presented with the bread and wine. We will take up one collection on Holy Thursday evening at the Offertory time which will then be brought forward with the bread and wine. The gifts given in this collection will be shared three ways: between our two Saint Vincent de Paul Conferences and with Pregnancy Crisis Incorporated, which operates from our parish office, each group providing practical assistance to vulnerable and needy members of our community. It is customary, as well, to take up the annual collection for the support of holy places in the Holy Land to assist our brothers and sisters there. Envelopes for this collection will be put on the pews on Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, and the collection itself taken up immediately before the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3:00pm on Good Friday. Please note that incense will be used at the Evening Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, and at the Easter Vigil. For those who attend the Latin Mass and don’t have their own missal, you can find copies of the Propers and Readings for the Mass (in Latin with English translation) in or near the hymnsheet tray at the front door of the church (or if they are not there, please check the hymnbook basket on the floor nearby). We are in need of another musician or two to join the roster for the 7:30am Mass at Mary Immaculate. This could be either an organist to play “live” or someone who can work the disks for the organ (if you can successfully operate a CD player then you can handle this). Please let me know. This Thursday evening at 7:30pm is the Chrism Mass in Saint Stephen’s Cathedral. I hope to see a good number of faces from our parish, especially since we are so close to the city! The gathering of people and clergy with the Archbishop is a wonderful sign of the unity of the diocese. During the Mass, the priests renew their commitment to priestly service, and the holy oils that will be used in Baptism, Confirmation, Anointing of the Sick, the dedication of new churches and in the ordination of bishops, will be blessed, or consecrated (in the case of the Sacred Chrism). I look forward to seeing you at the Cathedral on Thursday night! All-night exposition at Saint Elizabeth’s this Thursday is suspended so that everyone can be at the Cathedral with the Archbishop. A reminder of the Eucharistic fast: “One who is to receive the Most Holy Eucharist is to abstain from any food or drink, with the exception of water and medicine, for at least the period of one hour before Holy Communion.” The purpose of the fast is to prepare ourselves to receive Our Lord worthily. In this life we do penance for our sins and weaknesses, and bodily mortification like fasting opens us to the healing grace of the Lord. The hunger created by fasting augments the spiritual hunger we should have. We don’t want to be overly-scrupulous about the fast, but neither should we be too lax. The hour’s fast should also remind us that we should approach Communion worthily, that is, we should not receive Our Lord if we are not properly disposed or if we are in a state of mortal sin. I was asked recently about the collections at Mass, so I thought it might be useful to put an explanation in print. It has been the custom in the Brisbane Archdiocese for the first collection to pay the priest’s stipend and allowed presbytery housekeeping expenses (up to a certain level). The second collection is for the running of the parish—basically everything else apart from the clergy expenses. It is good for everyone to be aware that Annerley Ekibin parish is currently only paying for the equivalent of one priest, as it always has. Our parish pays half of my stipend package, and other half is paid by the Marriage Tribunal. Our parish pays half of Father Paul’s stipend package, and the other half is paid by Indooroopilly parish, of which Father is the Administrator. Even when there are four priests here from the end of May, the parish will continue only to pay the equivalent of one priest’s stipend package and the housekeeping allowances of one priest; so, effectively, no change from when Father Michael or Father John were the Parish Priests. The other priests of the Brisbane Oratory in Formation, whilst we will all be serving in our parish here, will gain income for our stipends and the running of our house from sources outside Annerley Ekibin parish, e.g. from work in other parishes or other ministries and apostolates (in my own case, from the Marriage Tribunal). An art conservation expert visited Mary Immaculate Church recently to inspect the Stations of the Cross and the statue of Our Lady which got wet in the November storm. A recommendation has been made to our insurer that the Stations and Our Lady’s statue be removed so that they can be properly cleaned due to the contaminated water that went over them, and that they be treated with a consolidant to reduce the risk of the plaster swelling and breaking down. Additional repairs need to be made to Our Lady’s statue. So at some point in the future these items will “disappear” for

a while whilst they are taken away for repair.

The same expert also examined the painting of Mary Immaculate that the Sisters have housed in the convent for a few years. It was painted by one of the Sacred Heart Sisters who were in Annerley before the Josephite Sisters came, and was originally in the wooden church on Ipswich Road, before being altered slightly to fit in the new (present) church. It was removed after the high altar and throne were built, and was in Mary Immaculate School for many years. It is certainly part of the patrimony of the parish, and is worthy of conservation work which will cost around $8000. If anyone is

interested in funding this work, please let me know.

Please mark your diaries for our next parish social, a special 100th anniversary ANZAC Day gala, Saturday 25th April, from 6:00pm in the Our Lady’s College Hall, Annerley.

Tickets $60, Concession $45, (Earlybird $50 by 31st March). Contact

Nicole King on 3342 0777 or 0413 544 192.

The next draw in our Parish Art Union will be on Tuesday 7th April for a prize of $50. Tickets are $25 each, and one ticket gets you in all remaining monthly draws for the year, with the jackpot draw of at least $500 in November. Application forms are at the back of the church, on the parish website, or you can purchase tickets at the Parish Office. Let us know if you’d like to take some tickets to sell to

friends, family members or work colleagues.

Work was due to start on Friday in the Parish Office to remove asbestos to allow for repair works to the storm affected area at the rear of the building. This will involve remedial work to the roof and

repair and rebuilding of the internal structure underneath.

Do you know of anyone who would like to become Catholic? It might be someone who has never been baptized, or someone who is already baptized in another church or ecclesial community, and who wishes to enter into full communion with the Catholic Church. Please contact us. We have several adults currently who are seeking baptism or admission to full communion. Please keep them in your prayers, and also those whom God is calling to join us in the fullness

of faith in His Church.

Archbishop Coleridge is currently giving a series of talks under the title “Living Biblically in a Secular World.” The first in the series occurred last Wednesday evening, and from the reports I’ve heard it was superb. You can listen to the audio recording of each talk via the Archdiocesan website, and the audio for the first talk is now available

online (just google the above title and you’ll find it).

Our heartfelt condolences are extended to Sylvia and Jim De Luca on the tragic death of Maria during the week, and to her husband Gary, her children, Colleen and Ambrose, and all members of her family. Maria’s funeral will take place in our parish sometime this week; her funeral details were not to hand at the time of going to

print. May she rest in peace.

CALLING ALL PARISH MUSICIANS Join the massed choir to sing at the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral of St Stephen on Thursday 26 March at 7.30pm. A final rehearsal will be held at the Cathedral of St Stephen on Thursday 26 March 6.00pm – 7.00pm immediately before Mass. The Chrism Mass is a chance to gather with the Archbishop who blesses the oils to be used during the coming year. Additionally, the priests renew their commitment to him made at their own ordinations. Thus your presence is a support to the Archdiocese, the Archbishop, your priest and parish.
