 Reshma  Saujani  is  a  Democrat  running  for  New  York  City  Public  Advocate  to  create  opportunities  for  all  New  Yorkers,  be  the  voice  of  the  middle  class,  and  stand  up  and  fight  for  all  of  our  communities.    Reshma  previously  served  as  Deputy  Public  Advocate  where  she  created  real  results  that  helped  New  Yorkers  across  the  city  and  started  Girls  Who  Code,  a  national  non-­‐profit  that  teaches  teenagers  from  low-­‐income  communities  the  skills  they  need  to  get  high-­‐paying,  21st  century  jobs.        

As  the  daughter  of  Ugandan  political  refugees,  Reshma  is  deeply  committed  to  creating  opportunities  for  every  New  Yorker  to  attain  the  American  Dream.  Reshma  is  not  a  typical  City  Hall  or  Albany  politician  who  only  cares  about  headlines  and  ignores  results.  Her  vision  for  the  Public  Advocate’s  office  will  create  real  differences  in  the  lives  of  New  Yorkers,  not  just  react  to  the  issues  of  the  day. She  will  fight  tirelessly  for  good-­‐paying  jobs;  a  first-­‐class  public  education  for  our  kids;  safe,  affordable  housing  for  our  seniors  and  families;  and  enhanced  city  services  for  working  families,  mothers  and  seniors.          

As  Deputy  Public  Advocate,  Reshma:    • Worked  with  more  than  600  immigrant  small  business  owners  in  all  five  boroughs  to  complete  the  City’s-­‐

first  effort  to  identify  and  address  both  day-­‐to-­‐day  and  long-­‐term  small  business  needs.  • Created  the  DREAM  Fellowship  to  provide  undocumented  immigrant  students  the  opportunity  to  

complete  their  higher  education  at  CUNY.  • Partnered  with  the  White  House  to  create  the  Urban  Entrepreneurship  Summit  Series  to  provide  training,  

professional  development,  capital,  and  resources  to  local  entrepreneurs,  including  summits  hosted  at  Monroe  College  in  the  Bronx  and  Barnard  College.    

• Served  as  the  Executive  Director  of  the  Fund  for  Public  Advocacy  providing  support  for  tenants,  entrepreneurs,  students  and  working  families.  

   

As  Founder  of  Girls  Who  Code,  Reshma:    • Established  an  intensive  computer  programming  

training  for  young  girls  to  learn  the  skills  necessary  for  21st  century  jobs.  

• Organized  an  unprecedented  coalition  of  tech  industry  leaders  to  build  a  pipeline  of  engineering  talent  in  New  York  City,  including  Twitter,  Google,  GE,  and  eBay.    

As  our  next  Public  Advocate,  Reshma  will  focus  on:    • JOBS:  Creating  new  jobs  and  expanding  opportunity  for  all  New  Yorkers  by  supporting  small  business  

with  increased  access  to  capital  and  technical  assistance,  investing  in  new  entrepreneurs,  and  leveraging  new  funding  to  train  New  Yorkers  with  in-­‐demand  job  skills.    

• EDUCATION:  Making  sure  every  New  York  City  public  school  student  is  college  and  career  ready  by  increasing  technology  education  in  schools,  fighting  for  increased  professional  development  resources  for  teachers,  and  enhancing  the  voice  of  parents  and  communities  in  school  decisions.  

• HOUSING:  Launching  a  new  program  to  partner  pro-­‐bono  lawyers  with  tenants  fighting  unscrupulous  landlords,  advocating  for  greater  affordable  housing  commitments  from  developers,  and  calling  out  NYCHA  on  critical  outstanding  NYCHA  safety  repairs.  

• WOMEN:    Ensuring  women  and  working  families  have  a  voice  in  all  city  policy  discussions,  expanding  paid  parental  leave,  and  reducing  the  education  gap  in  science  and  math  for  young  women.
