President Susan Klear Sets Agenda
! This for me has been aweek of firsts: m y first meeting as
club president, my first DistrictCouncil meeting. And next week, I
look forward to another first, myfirst club assembly.
! First of all I would like tothank everyone for returning theclub surveys. It looks like the partof being a Rotarian is the
Fellowship of many interestingpeople and the Fellowship of
doing good work in thecommunity. And because weknow that Rotary is committed to
service both in our own townsand to the world at large our
members are looking for morecommunity involvement. As I
have always known we are a
group of friendly welcomingpeople and we enjoy a relaxed
camaraderie.
! Some of my goals for thisyear include, in no order of
importance, just what occurs tome as I write:
1) Starting our own interactclub. I will be talking morewith Janine Payton our new
generations service chair sothat we can figure out how
to make this happen. I willbe looking for volunteers to
assist in creating this newclub. So those of you whoare interested in
participating please contacther. This reminds me that it
is necessary for our clubmembers to have completed
a child protection program
and be fingerprinted. I aminterested in finding out how
many people need to completethe class and how many people
need to be fingerprinted. I wantto look into seeing how we can
help club members out toward
completing this and perhaps, depending on how many people
are interested, see about havingsomeone come to fingerprinted
us at one of our meetings.2) Being more involved in the
community, whether it be
Campbell, Willow Glen,West San Jose. I am
hoping that we can haveour names and faces more
recognized in thecommunity. With having an
interact club we will be ableto participate more in thecommunity by having them
be a very important part ofour community service
team. As we increase ourfund raisers, by having not
just a food booth at theCampbell art and wineevents but the signature
event of Valley Flavors andthe golf tournament, the
major fundraiser started bythe Willow Glen club, we

will have more funds to divide up for
community projects as well asinternational projects. Start thinkingabout some goals you might have for
community involvement both financiallyand through volunteerism. I have asked
Jerry Ross if he would chair the new
veterans assistance program. As youmight recall the San Jose Sunrise Clubwhich gave up itscharter recently had aprogram to help the veterans. I am
hoping that we can continue this or asimilar program which would be a very
big help in the community. Please contactJerry if you're interested in being a
member of this committee. JohnShannon is the chair of communityservice so please let him know of your
ideas toward that end.3) Getting more members helping on
committees. I remember when I became thevocational chair and I figured it was just easier
for me to take on the responsibility by myselfrather than asking other people for their help.To be honest, as the only person on the
committee I picked and chose what I wantedto do. Unfortunately there were some things
that could've been done that I did not dobecause of either time or interest. I realize
now that I was shortchanging myself andothers who might have been interested andwilling to help, or even take over the
responsibility, to reach those goals that I puton the back burner. I'm even finding out that
we have a lot of members who do things anddon't advertise that they're doing them. We
have a club that is wonderful in just takingcare of things and making things happen. I do
however want to see if we can get morepeople working on committees so that thesame person does not have to be doing
everything by themselves. Not only does itavoid burnout, but it allows other members to
learn what is happening so that instead ofkeeping a job until burnout we can actually
transition a new person into that positioneasily.
4) New membership. I have asked Adam Beck tochair the membership committee. ChrisYoung will also be working with him. If we
are to continue being a vibrant club in theCampbell area, it is necessary for us to
continue growing. Because there are somany young people who are interested inservice, I want our Rotary club to be
available to them, and I want them to know
about us. At the Rotary convention Michael
MacQueen, the author of The New Rules ofEngagement, a guide to understanding andconnecting with Generation Y, spoke to us on
the importance of growing our clubs with thisnew generation . He said generation Y
(those people born between the mid-1960s
and early 1980s) want to be a part ofsomething bigger than themselves. This is agroup who crave community, truly want tomake a difference, and have been raised with
the confidence and self-esteem to believethat they really can. A study in 2005
indicated that over 70% of Gen Ys activelyvolunteer on a weekly basis. They are
actively looking for opportunities to networkand connect with mentors in order to gain acompetitive edge in their careers.Young
people will not be attracted to Rotary simplybecause they want to become a club; they
are attracted to clubs because of the benefitsand outcomes that membership will lead to.
In other words when the young people askwhy you exist as a Rotary club, what they arereally asking is what are you achieving; who
are you helping; how are you making animpact; what's the point? What will inspire
and give impact to this group are the storiesand the experiences that you can share of
the impact that Rotary has made in your lifeand the world at large. Rotary representsmany of the things this group is looking for. I
know that it will be very challenging tocapture the interest of this group yet if we are
to remain active we must develop new anddifferent ways to help these vital young
people find us. I think that Adam and Chris, along with others of you who want to be a
part of this committee can come up withsome wonderful ways to spark an interest in
joining us. I think that we have one
component that is really significant: we havesome wonderful mentors in our club who
have been vital contributors not only in thecommunity but within their professions. I'm
hoping that we can use this talent. As wework toward bringing in new young membersI will be asking you to become mentors to
them.
We have lots of events coming up this weekend, nextweekend, and in the weeks to come. Please check
your calendars for dates, times, and places.
Yours in Rotary, Dr. Sue.
