Iwas saddened to read that Turkey had yet anotherearthquake. It reminded me that Turkey Rotary Clubs
coupled with us to provide computers for Rosemary
School and that President Kit was instrumental in us
coupling with several other Rotary Clubs both here and
in Turkey to provide the rebuilding of a water system
that had been destroyed in the earthquake of 1999
there. I decided to look into the this history. There
were two earthquakes separated by four months in
1999. The region of the Izmit Quake was in north-
western Turkey and happened in August, 1999. It
measured 7.4 and lasted 45 seconds. The official death
toll was 18,000, injured 44,000 and destroyed 300,000
homes. It was followed by 1,300 aftershocks
culminating in the second quake known as the Dzce
Quake and rated 7.2. This quake was felt in both
Istanbul (northwest) and Ankara (a little more centrally
located in the country). This quake had far fewer
casualties (less than 1,000) but affected 18,000
buildings. This current earthquake happened in the
Eastern part of Turkey near the border of Iran and was, I
believe, thought to be another 7.2. Turkey has the
Northern Anatolian Fault that runs across the top of
Turkey East to West, and the East Anatolian Fault, East
to South, which I think is the fault for this quake. I will
let everyone know what Rotarians are planning for
assisting this tragedy.
The Avenues of Service meeting was a success. Our
two red badgers enjoyed learning more about Rotary,
seeing about 500 people from our District, and learning
about some of the things that other clubs are doing fortheir communities. The Downtown San Jose Clubs
project is Adelante Project. It works with 60 4thand 5th
graders at Washington School (95% Latino)doing
leadership skills training. The Sunnyvale Club has
ASantewhich partners with 4-5 other clubs to have the
ROTOCARE Clinic which was started by John Fisher (I
sent out an email regarding a dinner honoring him to
which we are all invited). Oakland Reads is the project
with Oakland Rotary in which all 3rdgraders in Oakland
received 3 books. The Los Altos Club has the Partners
for New Generations in which volunteers tutor and
mentor youth in their area. They help teachers, take
children to lunch , are role models all being done one
hour per week by volunteers in their club.
Their
website is:www.phgmvla.org. The Cupertino Club
works with Rebuilding Together, a national program, in
this area. So many wonderful programs that our Rotary
Family participates in.
Along with going to the Presidents workshop, I
attended the Youth Protection Process. Several of us
are certified, yet because we are working so much
more with the youth, starting an Interact Program,
working as tutors with the Citizens Schools, and more
(I am not sure what at this point), I want to make sure
that we are all in compliance with the requirements that
Rotary has set out.
When I was at the assistant governors meeting last
week, the president of the Saratoga club was talking
about a project that their club has started, the
Handyman Project. They are working with OSH and are
starting a program in which volunteers are going outabout twice a month to help, mostly seniors, to do
small projects around the house. St. Andrews Church
is receiving the calls in the community, Saratoga, Los
Gatos, Campbell. I think this would be a wonderful
inter-Rotary Club project and I asked if we could also
work with them in our community. Jim Morelan will be
our Chair for this. He has been in contact with Tom
Sloan and will talk to our club about this worthwhile
plan.
Megan volunteered to be one of the adults that
interfaced with the students at Citizen Schools. She
had a wonderful time and will tell us about her
experience next week.
I sent out an announcement regarding the Cirque du
Soliel TOTEM performance and I received lots of
interest. I will be passing around a list for sign-ups.
So, lots and lots of things are coming now and in the
future, and as District Governor Arley Marley says: IF
THIS DOESNT LIGHT YOUR FIRE, YOUR WOOD IS
WET!!
I sent out anannouncement
regarding the Cirque du
Soliel TOTEMperformance and Ireceived lots of interest.
