REFLECTION ON MARTYRDOM
Last week Pope Francis officially recognized the martyrdom of Italian Father Tullio Merluzzo and a Guatemalan layman, Luis Arroyo Navarro, who were murdered in Quirigua, Guatemala on July 1, 1981. He had already beatified on September 23 Father Stanley Rother, of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City, who was shot down in the rectory of his church in Santiago Atitlan. These men gave their lives for Christ in defending the rights of poor farmers, which in the minds of some of those leading the fight against armed rebellion in their country placed them on the side of the rebels. This was the situation in the 1960s into the 1980s in many Latin American countries; when the Church defended the poor, she was accused of supporting armed insurrection. As the Brazilian Archbishop Dom Hélder Câmara famously said, “When I feed the poor, they call me a saint. When I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist.” They died for the poor, and they were martyrs.
A martyr is one who is killed in odium fidei (“hatred of the faith”). He or she may or may not die as a direct witness to Christ, as did the first martyrs of the Church. A person who is moved by their faith to witness to justice and charity may be just as much a martyr as someone who dies while preaching the gospel. Thus, the young Italian girl, St. Maria Goretti, was a martyr of chastity because she accepted death rather than allow herself to be violated by a rapist. Another example is the Polish priest St. Maximillian Kolbe, who was declared a martyr of charity by Pope St. John Paul II because he voluntarily took the place of a fellow prisoner, a family man, in a Nazi concentration camp.
The word “martyr” comes from the Greek word meaning “witness.” Martyrdom is considered to be the greatest witness that one can give to Christ, who himself was a martyr. Many believers have actively sought it. For example, in the early fourth century the Prefect of a Roman Legion in Armenia asked his soldiers if any were Christians. Forty of them stepped forward. They were ordered to offer a pagan sacrifice but refused. So they were told to strip and stand on a frozen lake throughout the night. They ran out singing on to the lake. One of them weakened when he saw a warm barrel of water set up to tempt the naked soldiers to come in out of the cold. However, he was soon replaced by a guard, who shucked his clothes and ran to join the other Christian soldiers, declaring that he now was a Christian also. He chose martyrdom at the very moment that he chose Christ.
The Church both reveres and abhors martyrdom as a heroic sacrifice by believers but a violent, hate-filled act by persecutors. Blessed Pope Paul VI said in his homily at the canonization of the Ugandan martyrs of the late nineteenth century: “Africa has been washed by the blood of these latest martyrs, the first of this new age and, God willing, let them be the last, although such a holocaust is precious indeed.” You can hear the ambivalence in his message – a beautiful offering to God, but we pray it doesn’t happen again. The Church lauds the martyrs even as she condemns their murder. She does not require her children to seek to die for the faith; she wants them to live for it. But she rejoices in heroic witness to the faith.
As in all things, prudence is required. There is no shame in fleeing danger when the situation requires it. For example, Father Arroyo Navarro was transferred by his superiors to a different parish when his life was threatened. They did not want a martyr, but alas, his enemies caught up with him. St. Issac Jogues, the North American Jesuit martyr, wrote in his diary: “I vow to you, Jesus my Savior, that as far as I have the strength I will never fail to accept the grace of martyrdom…I bind myself in this way so that for the rest of my life I will have neither permission nor freedom to refuse opportunities of dying and shedding my blood for you, unless at a particular juncture I should consider it more suitable for your glory to act otherwise at that time.” Years later, he allowed himself to be ransomed from his Iroquois Indian captors, and fled to France. But a year and a half later he returned to North America, to the same tribe that had tortured him, and there was martyred on October 18, 1646.

Live the Liturgy Pope Francis constantly reminds us of the wideness of God’s mercy and its unconditional character. God is always patiently loving his children and opening the doors to his heart. We must, however, freely choose to accept God’s invitation and join in the feast of his love. We desire many things and we have restless hearts. We often attempt to quench our desire with things that are short-lived and shallow. All of us long to be satisfied and at peace. How do we announce to the world, in ways that are convincing and without judgment, that it is really God whom we seek?
Sunday’s Readings
Matthew 22:1-14 or 22:1-10: Jesus’ parable of the wedding feast ends in a startling way. How do you know if you are properly dressed for the wedding feast (the return of Christ)? Isaiah 25:6-10a: Seven hundred years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah foreshadows the messianic age to come with lush imagery. What does this imagery reveal to you about God’s nature? Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20: Paul informs the Philippians he has learned the secret of living well under any circumstance: find strength in Christ. How is this true in your life?
Please remember to pray for those in need of hope and healing.
Mary, Health of the Sick, pray for them.

The 2017 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. To date we have raised more than $126,000. This money provided for the repair of the church roof and the removal and preservation of the stained glass windows of the old church on Evergreen Street. Because the maintenance of the church roof was less than anticipated we were able to allocate some Ap-peal funds to the less than antic-ipated Offertory income for 2016 – 2017. We added a full time parish music director. We have significantly upgraded the music program in our parish liturgies and school. You may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make either an on-going or one-time donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

We will report our detailed monthly collection data on the first Sunday
of the month for the previous month. Our October data will be
reported on November 5th.
We are very pleased that our E-giving over the past three months has increased. However, the collection income through September is almost $21,000 be-low our budgeted amount. Our beloved church with the associ-ated facilities is almost 16 years old. As in your home, mainte-nance costs and operating costs need to be addressed. For exam-ple, our maintenance supplies for the church in September were $1,020. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal responsibilities. ABVM News
Assumption BVM Parish School News
Assumption BVM second graders are learning about communities, a major theme in the social studies curriculum. Students learned about building a classroom community, worshiping as a Christian community, and appreciating our common geographical community of West Grove. Students read about different types of communities and participated in a brainstorming activity focused on the needs of our town. The culminating activity included a walking field trip throughout the borough of West Grove. The class visited West Grove Post Office, Avon Grove Library, West Grove Fire Company Station 22, Borough Office, Police Station, and Veterans’ Memorial Garden, where the students said a prayer and sang America the Beautiful. Finally, the class enjoyed some play time at West Grove Memorial Park. A big thank you goes out to all those community helpers who shared their knowledge with our students as well as our devoted parent volunteers who assisted on this trip!

Saint Hedwig Feast Day: October 16th
Model of Faith and Virtue
Hedwig was born in Bavaria (modern day Ger-
many). At the age of 12, Hedwig married
Duke Henry of Silesia, the head of the Polish
Royal family. They had seven children and a
happy marriage. Hedwig was dedicated to pris-
oners, the poor and the sick. Upon the death
of her husband, she gave away her fortune and
retired to a Cistercian convent and died in the
year 1243. Many miracles were reported
after her death and she was canonized in
1266.

Our Lady of Fatima, pray for our dear country. Our Lady of Fatima, sanctify our clergy. Our Lady of Fatima, make our Catholics more fervent. Our Lady of Fatima, guide and inspire those who govern us. Our Lady of Fatima, cure the sick who confide in thee. Our Lady of Fatima, console the sorrowful who trust in thee. Our Lady of Fatima, help those who invoke your aid. Our Lady of Fatima, deliver us from all dangers. Our Lady of Fatima, help us to resist temptation. Our Lady of Fatima, obtain for us all that we ask thee.
Our Lady of Fatima, help those who are dear to us. Our Lady of Fatima, bring back to the right road our erring brothers. Our Lady of Fatima, give us back our ancient fervor. Our Lady of Fatima, obtain for us pardon of our manifold sins and offenses. Our Lady of Fatima, bring all men to the feet of thy Divine Child. Our Lady of Fatima, obtain peace for the world. O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
