Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
Sacred Hearts Parish
August 23, 2015

Sacred Hearts Parish, Malden, MA August 23, 2015 Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time
2
Dear Sacred Hearts Parishioners:
I am deeply indebted to Deacon Franklin Mejia and the many visiting priests who covered Sacred Hearts Church while I was on vacation. The weather this summer has been nearly flawless for sun worshippers and outdoor enthusiasts. The charter schools and some public school systems begin classes this week. Like a kid, I hoped this summer would last forever! Soon college students will move back to Boston, and it will be “traffic as usual!” The only thing that seems to be moving faster for someone my age is time! I only wish my body could keep up with my wrist watch and calendar.
This week the parish, school and staff welcome Deacon T. Van Nguyen. Deacon Van was ordained as a Permanent Deacon at Holy Cross Cathedral (Boston Archdiocese) in 2008. Deacon Van’s last assignment was Saint Mark Parish in Dorchester. Though there is a large Vietnamese population in Dorchester, Deacon Van’s ministry encompassed the entire parish of St. Mark’s. He is already well known by the Sacred Hearts Vietnamese Community. His ministry here will likewise extend to the entire parish. Deacon Van is a doctor (psychiatry), but prefers to be addressed familiarly as “Deacon Van.” Some may say, “Two deacons?” When I was assigned to Saint Pat’s in Stoneham as a transitional deacon and later as a priest, 3 deacons on staff was the norm.
I have been speaking with Mr. Tom Arria, Jr., our principal. Cheverus’ enrollment is on the rise. Families wishing to enroll a new student should contact the vice principal, Mr. Jeff Lane at [email protected]. The new school year at Cheverus promises to be exciting. A new library and computer lab will surely capture the imagination and excitement of our students!
Catechists are needed to staff our English and Spanish language religious education program. If you would like to hand on the Tradition of our Faith, please contact Mary DeAngelo or Deacon Franklin Mejia. The Spanish language tract is new, so a teacher and an assistant will be needed for all grade levels, K through 10.
There is an opportunity for a donor to sponsor a new sanctuary bell. The bell itself is very beautiful and will “announce” the beginning of each Mass when it is rung by the priest when he leaves the sacristy. The bell is $600. Engraving, once determined, must be added to that amount. Due to the difficulty of engraving a bell, a name with the year of birth and death may be all that is possible. A nearby plaque may offer greater flexibility. A photo of the bell is in this weeks’ bulletin. There will be other items available in the future that will enhance the beauty and liturgical life of the Church.
In closing, I want to mention how well the Tuesday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament has been received by parishioners. Please sign-up for an hour of prayer and reflection between 12:00 and 7:00 p.m. God bless you for your dedication to Sacred Hearts and Cheverus! Fr. Mark
Do you have a child(ren) in Grades 1- 10 that need to be enrolled in Religious Education?
Is your child of the age to receive First Holy Communion or Confir-mation?
Are you ready to help your child become closer to God?
Religious Education is for you and your family.
ALL classes (Grades 1-10) attend the 9:00am Mass, with their families, followed by class for ALL grades. There is no better way to start your week then with Mass and centering yourself with what is most important in life! The registration form for Religious Education can be found on the parish website – www.sacredheartsparish.org under
the Religious Education link. If you have any questions or if you don’t have access to a computer
call the Religious Education office at 781-322-5211 or email [email protected] and a form will be mailed out to you.
We are so excited for you to join the program!!!!

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time It doesn’t get much more direct than Joshua’s words to the tribes of Israel “decide today whom you will serve”, and, in case they needed coaxing, “as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord”. And when Jesus asks the Twelve, “...Do you also want to leave?” Peter doesn’t miss a beat, “Lord, to whom shall we go? … We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.”
Do you believe? Are you Convinced? Share this Good News.
