From Pastor’s Desk
W e live in troubling times, experiencing the effects of Covid-19, sheltering in place, an economy in jeopardy, wearing face coverings, limited services,
civil unrest, tensions between peoples, the untimely unnecessary death of George Floyd, mostly peaceful protests and wanton vandalism and theft that leaves our minds reeling even more from the already ever present daily challenges. Our secular society does not seem to have the ability to cope and address these issues in an appropriate forum to make fundamental changes to the way we live and interact as a diverse population. People see the opposing camps, them and us, versus seeing ourselves as we the people.
I ronically this Sunday’s scriptures, on the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, challenge our experience of division and inequity by calling upon people to unity
and hope. “Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the holy ones greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellow ship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” 2 Corinthians 13: 11-13.
T he divisions in the early church were different than the divisions our societies experience today and we recognize that the way forward is complicated and fraught with difficulty trying to come up with solutions
that have so far eluded communities, leaders and the people themselves. Decades ago Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. had an audacious dream that we could live as sisters and brothers, walking arm in arm, hand in hand towards a new reality but that requires laying down old habits, old prejudices, and the old ways of doing things. We could throw our hands up in despair, or we can lay down the burden and pick up the tenets of our faith, and believe in what Jesus said and did, what Jesus taught us by his very life and lead us into the reign of God. The news depicts the imperfect, flawed, shameful way people fear the other, fear the unknown, and fear the shortsightedness and self-interest of a few people.
E ven with the promulgation of the commandments, even with the sacrifice of Jesus’ life, even with his unending love for us, he places the responsibility of working out critical issues into our hands, not selfish
hands, not self interested hands, but in hands that are open and responsive to others. If society in particular and in general continues with self-centeredness, a me first attitude, the way ahead will be amazingly difficult. It has been pointed out time and time again that in WWII we united to vanquish a clear and present danger, an enemy who did not seek the good for others, but domination of the known world. We sought to unleash justice rather than injustice and we have a long way to go. After the attack on 9/11 we were encouraged to unite and at the same time not single out any ethnic or religious group as a perceived enemy, but come together to learn, and find our way forward.
W e must learn from the lessons of the past, learn from the trials of our forebears, seek wisdom and insight so that we can do more than coexist but fight for the rights of each individual to live our lives in
the spirit of the Constitution, the spirit of the Gospel, to live out Jesus’ command to love one another and face the issues and challenges of our day in a lawful way. The future of society is at stake. Together, we can make it through. We pray that the Trinity, God who is Father, Son and Spirit, this unity of relationship will help us forge a way of unity going forward. May God bless us with courage. Father Larry Hendel
