OUR MISSION STATEMENT
SS. Peter & Paul Parish, a community of faith called by God to deepen
our relationship with Jesus Christ, serves the Lord by sharing our time,
talent and treasure. As disciples of Christ, we are called to bring Jesus
Christ to ourselves and others: our children, the sick, the poor, the fallen
away Catholics and those who need to hear God’s message of uncondi-
tional love and forgiveness. SS. Peter & Paul Parish is a beacon of light
rooted in Jesus Christ, passed on to his successor, our Holy Father the
Pope, and is guided by our local bishop to build the Kingdom of God on
Earth. It is our mission to shine the light of Jesus Christ in our world and
to spiritually enrich the individual members of the parish as well as the
larger community through word, worship, sacrament and service.

Greetings Ministry
Greeting Cards: The parish has had a greetings min-
istry for the past two years whereby we send get-well,
thinking-of-you, and sympathy cards to people when
we are made aware of their particular circumstances,
to remind them that their parish does care about them
in their difficulty. At this time, we need more sympa-
thy cards; if anyone has some unused sympathy cards
at home to offer for this ministry, just drop them in
the TACO box in the back of the church. Thanks!
Greeting People: You have probably been greeted at
the door of the church at weekend Mass by one of our
Greeters. Anyone here may volunteer to do this sim-
ple act of welcoming others to our church; so if you
see an empty doorway, please feel free to step up
there, hold the door, and say “Hello” or “Welcome”
or “Have a nice day” in the spirit of hospitality appro-
priate to the liturgical celebration.
Newcomers and visitors are especially pleased
to find welcoming words and a friendly face at the
entrance, and even after Mass as well. Thank you.
T.A.C.O. Thanks
Thank you for your food donations to the TACO
Food Pantry. Through September, we have served
2,179 families, totaling 5,335 individuals; also, 1,217
senior families through our Elder Share/Fresh Express
programs. The need for food assistance in our area is
always present and your help makes a difference.
There is a box at the entrance of the church for unex-
pired staple foods for the Food Pantry.

All Saints Day / All Souls Day
Looking ahead: many families are already planning
for Halloween parades, parties, and “Trick or Treat.”
It is also vital that we pass on our Catholic un-
derstanding of All Saints Day (“All Hallows”) and
“All Hallows’ Eve” (Hallowe’en) as being originated
in a spiritual celebration of the holy people of God, as
we now prepare for October 31 and November 1.
We are reminded that All Saints Day (Nov. 1)
is a Holy Day of Obligation – why is that?
Holy Day Masses will be celebrated Tuesday,
Oct. 31, evening at 7 pm, and Wednesday, Nov. 1, at
8:30 am and 12:10 pm.
Please plan your family schedule accordingly
so that the holy day is appropriately observed with
attendance at Mass..
Memorial Mass – Saturday November 4, 2107
Each year we remember in a special way those from
our parish community who have died during the past
year. This year, our Memorial Mass with the
“Ceremony of Light” will be held at the Saturday
evening 5 pm Vigil Mass on November 4, 2017.
This is a wonderful opportunity for our parish commu-
nity to gather together to pray with and support fami-
lies who have lost a loved one this past year.
Blue Mass: Tuesday November 21, 2017
A liturgy recognizing and praying for those
who serve our community as Police Officers, Fire
Fighters, and First Responders will be held at 8:30
am on Tuesday, November 21, 2017, followed by a
reception in St. Agnes School.

Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC)
PART THREE SECTION ONE CHAPTER ONE ARTICLE 7 THE VIRTUES
1803 "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatev-
er is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things."
A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good. It allows the person not only to perform good acts,
but to give the best of himself. The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual
powers; he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions.
The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God.
I. THE HUMAN VIRTUES
1804 Human virtues are firm attitudes, stable dispositions, habitual perfections of intellect and will that govern our actions, order our passions, and guide our conduct according to reason and faith. They make
possible ease, self-mastery, and joy in leading a morally good life. The virtuous man is he who freely practices
the good. The moral virtues are acquired by human effort. They are the fruit and seed of morally good acts;
they dispose all the powers of the human being for communion with divine love.
The Cardinal Virtues 1805 Four virtues play a pivotal role and accordingly are called "cardinal;" all the others are grouped around
them. They are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance. "If anyone loves righteousness, [Wisdom's] la-
bors are virtues; for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice, and courage." These virtues are praised un-
der other names in many passages of Scripture.
1807 Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neigh-
bor. Justice toward God is called the "virtue of religion." Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights
of each and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and
to the common good. The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures, is distinguished by habitual
right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbor. "You shall not be partial to the poor or
defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbor."68 "Masters, treat your slaves justly and
fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven."69
Let us pray for the Virtue of Justice in our lives.
Fr. Ed needs your help to plan Christmas Mass Schedule. Clip and return – thank you!
This year, December 25, 2017, Christmas Day is on a Monday. Our usual Christmas schedule is to
have Masses on Christmas Eve at 4 pm, 6 pm and 10 pm, and then on Christmas Day at 10 am.
If we use this same schedule this year, it would mean that the majority of parishioners would need to
attend Mass twice on Sunday (Sunday morning liturgy, then Christmas Eve Mass in the afternoon/evening.
An alternative proposal has been made to schedule Masses on Sunday, Christmas Eve, at 4 and 10 pm,
and Christmas Day Masses at 9 am and 11 am.
What would be best for everyone? Please note your preference below, clip this out and place it in the
collection basket next week, or call the office ASAP — 570-265-2113.
_______Stay the same: Sunday, Christmas Eve at 4 pm, 6 pm, and 10 pm; and Christmas Day at 10 am
______Change to: Sunday, Christmas Eve at 4 pm and 10 pm; and Christmas Day at 9 am and 11 am
______Or Other Suggestions: _____________________________________________________________

World Mission Sunday - This Weekend, October 21-22
World Mission Sunday is observed in every land and nation
this weekend, October 21-22, 2017. Following the example of our
Holy Father, Pope Francis, we are called upon this weekend in par-
ticular to keep the poor and those most in need close to our hearts.
Like Pope Francis, we are asked to be especially mindful of
our obligation to build the Church and serve the poor to the very
ends of the earth. It is what the Church exists to do.
The Society for the Propagation of the Faith is the Holy Fa-
ther’s chief outreach to more than 1,150 missionary dioceses across
the globe that depend on the financial help and the prayers of all of
us. These mission churches provide a spiritual home for the poorest and most vulnerable, sanctifying them
with the Sacraments through which they come to experience the Lord’s presence and peace.
Through the generous support of the good work of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith by so
many of our faithful people, World Mission Sunday enables us to join our lives with the loving work of mis-
sionaries of every time and every place. As Pope Francis writes in his message for World Mission Sunday,
parishes are most fully alive when “grounded in love for Jesus and concern for the needs of others.”
Special envelopes are in the rear of the church; For contribution credit, mark your name/envelope
number on the envelope, or designate “Missions” on your loose check.
Commemoration of Martin Luther Posting - Sunday, October 29, 2017
The local Lutheran Community has invited us to recognize our common beliefs and to participate in the
commemoration of Martin Luther’s posting of his Articles for Discussion.
This past Spring, Catholics and Lutherans came together to celebrate our common understandings and
beliefs of faith to help us to move forward in unity. The Towanda Lutheran Community is organizing a com-
mon service at 5:00 pm on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Towanda. See the fly-
er posted at the entrance to the church. If you are interested in attending, please contact Fr. Ed, call 570-265-
2113, and/or simply come to the Lutheran Church on South Main Street at 5 pm on Sunday, October 29.
Join us in prayer for Christian unity.
Last weekend, the parishes of the Diocese held the in-pew solicitation for the Diocesan Annual Appeal. Many
parishioners of our parish had already made a commitment to the Annual Appeal – we thank everyone for
their concern and generosity to those who are in need and benefit from the Annual Appeal. If you have not
yet made a commitment to the 2017 annual Appeal, please consider doing so - special envelopes are at the
entrance to the church and may be placed in the collection basket. Our parish goal is $33,000, the same
amount for several years. The Diocesan weekly report indicated that, prior to this past Sunday’s commitment,
our parishioners had already donated $18,665 (52.56% of our goal).
Every gift, regardless of the amount, is needed, and will make a tremendous impact in many lives.
