Thank you for your support. Father Mecca
Please remember St. Peter Parish when preparing
your will. A legacy to the church eases your tax bur-
den and helps continue the good works of our parish.
Our parish will resume Masses next week-
end, the Solemnity of Corpus Christi. Knowing how eager
many of us are to receive the Lord again, Fr. Leonel and I
wanted to make Eucharist available on this special Sunday.
Even though we must sanitize the pews etc. after each
Mass, I am confident that we can retain our schedule as we
almost have a sufficient number of volunteers, and as the
guidelines have eliminated the collection, offertory proces-
sion, and congregational singing, Mass most likely will not
exceed 45 minutes.
Following this text is a list of what you will experi-
ence coming to Mass. Before you arrive at church, you will
have to make a reservation. We are going to use a system
called Eventbrite. We ask you to go to our website, click
on the reservation button and click the Mass you plan to
attend and the number of people in your household. We
will cap the online reservation at 75 so that those parishion-
ers who prefer to use the telephone have the opportunity to

PENTECOST SUNDAY
get a seat. I am very sorry to ask you to make reservations,

perative that you arrive early for Mass because it will take

addition, Funeral Masses and Wedding Masses may resume
following the same guidelines as Sundays. Reservations for
the 20-30 people who attend daily Mass will not be re-
quired, but they will have to sign in on a log.
Understandably, all the guidelines are an imposition

and like it. With patience and resignation, we will see our-
selves through this time however long it lasts.

A Fast from Singing
There is good news and bad news. The good news is that
we are finally able to return to the public celebration of
Mass. The bad news is that there will be a ban on public
singing by the assembly during Mass. While I know this is
devastating news to those of us who love to sing, I believe it
is the right course of action to take.
I attended a webinar several weeks ago that was organized
by several choral organizations. During this webinar, sev-
eral medical experts gave presentations revealing that sing-
ing produces increased amounts of aerosol spray that trans-
mit the coronavirus. Their recommendation: stop singing
until we come up with a proven vaccine. I have already told
our parish choir that we will most likely NOT return to
singing together as a full choir in the fall; indeed, we will
probably return to a quartet of singers physically distanced
from each other as we have been doing on our live streams
over the last few months. As for choir rehearsals, I have
begun strategizing ways in which to begin virtual rehears-
als. At least this way we can return to some semblance of
singing in the safety of our own homes.
A singing congregation is, in essence, a large choir. For this
reason, our bishop has wisely asked that the faithful fast
from singing during Mass. We live in uncertain times, and
prudence requires us to make this sacrifice.
Music, however, is one of the ways in which we enrich our
liturgical celebrations. The Catechism of the Catholic
Church states:
The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of
inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The
main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of
sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part
of solemn liturgy. The composition and singing of inspired
psalms, often accompanied by musical instruments, were
already closely linked to the liturgical celebrations of the Old
Covenant. The Church continues and develops this tradition:
Address one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual
songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your
heart. He who sings prays twice. (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, #1156)
Music will therefore continue to be an integral part of our
Mass. The organ will continue to play, and the songs of the
church will be sung by our cantors. Moreover, since our
musical participation at Mass will be limited to listening, I
believe this may be a good opportunity to introduce new
music to our parish. Throughout the next several months,
you will have the opportunity to listen to new Mass settings
and new Responsorial Psalms. This way, when we are fi-
nally able to return to public singing, we will not only sing
with renewed joy the familiar hymns we love, but also new
music which we will have heard and learned from our can-
tors during our fast from congregational singing.
