Thurs., Mar. 27, 7:30 p.m., Fri., Mar. 28, 7:30 p.m., Sun., Mar. 30, 3:00 p.m. Directed by Bill Morrison • 80 min. • USA • 2012 • Not Rated. In the summer of 1926, heavy rains pelted the cen- tral basin of the Mississippi River, swelling its Kansas and Iowa tributaries to capacity. By Christmas, the Cumberland River at Nashville reached a level that still remains a record to this day. Ultimately, the Mississippi River Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in American history. As well as causing the loss of life and property, it caused the mass exodus of sharecroppers, who were forced to leave their plantations and migrate to Northern cities, where they had to adapt to industrial society. There was an interesting cultural side effect of the “Great Migration,” however, as the migrants took their musical traditions northward. The acoustic blues evolved, Delta blues became chicago Blues, and electric blues bands thrived in cities like Memphis, De- troit, and Chicago where they would sow the seeds for the emergence of R&B and rock’n’roll, as well as new forms of jazz. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum. org. 518 584 3456. terweaves a complex web of stories of life in rural Afghani-stan. The Saratoga Film Forum’s participation in Saratoga Reads is via a 2006 documentary that also offers a con-nected set of stories from Afghanistan. Shot in the war-torn capital city of Kabul, as well as the refugee camps of neighboring Pakistan, View From a Grain of Sand in-troduces viewers to three remarkable Afghan women who lead us through the maze of Afghanistan’s complex his-tory, showing how international interventions, war, and the rise of radical Islam have stripped Afghan women of their freedom over the last 30 years. The movie combines verité footage, interviews, and rare archival material to create a harrowing, thought-provoking, and intimate portrait of a still divided and brutalized nation. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. Thurs., Apr. 3, 7:30 p.m., Fri., Apr. 4, 7:30 p.m., Sun., Apr. 6, 3:00 p.m. Written and directed by Maciej Pieprzyca • 107 min. • Poland • 2013 • Not Rated • In Polish with English subtitles. From Poland comes a film that swept the Mon-tréal Film Festival last year. Mateusz (Dawid Ogrodnik) was diagnosed with cerebral palsy as a child and throughout his life has tried to communicate to the outside world that he is an intelligent and sentient human being. Unfortunately, his attempts at communication are misread as hysteria and thus quashed, and he is treated like a mindless husk. Until Magda (Katarzyna Zawadzka), a beautiful new nurse, ar-rives and pays him some attention—but her own neuroses have repercussions for Mateusz. Although incomprehensi-ble to the characters in the film, Mateusz provides the audi-ence with interior monologues that ironically counterpoint the his spastic sounds and movements. 320 Broadway, Saratoga Springs. saratogafilmforum.org. 518 584 3456. loW iNComE taXPaYEr CliNiC at lEgal aiD SoCiEtY oF NortHEaStErN NEW York CAPITAL DISTRICT - The LASNNY LITC offers FREE tax help to low income New Yorkers who have a tax problem with the IRS. For example, if you got a letter or notice from the IRS that you don’t understand or a bill from the IRS that you don’t think you owe or that you can’t pay, or if you were denied an Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) you thought you should have gotten, we may be able to help. The EITC could reduce your tax bill or even get you a re-fund if you qualify. You may be able to get the EITC if

you have qualifying children and your earned income falls under a certain limit. This limit ranges from $37,870 up to $51,567 in 2013 depending on your filing status and num-ber of children. Workers without children who had 2013 incomes below $14,340 ($19,680 for a married couple fil-ing jointly) may also receive a very small EITC benefit. To qualify, a child must live with you for more than half the year. A son or daughter, grandchild, younger brother or sister, or niece or nephew, may be a qualifying child. The child must be younger than 19 (or 24 if they are a full time student) or permanently and totally disabled. Only one person can claim a child for EITC each year. Other age, residence, and filing requirements must be met. You must file a tax return and claim the credit to get the EITC, even if you don’t otherwise have to file. If the IRS denies your claim for the EITC and you don’t understand why, you may want to talk to an accountant or an attorney. The LASNNY LITC can be reached at (518) 462-6765 or (800) 462-2922, Monday through Friday, 9am – 5pm.

Saratoga SPriNgS CitY CENtEr WElComES Saratoga SurrENDEr SCulPturESARATOGA SPRINGS - The City Center’s 30th Anniversary celebration continues as it welcomes the “Saratoga Sur-render Sculpture,” a bronze bas-relief, on loan from The Friends of Saratoga Battlefield. This massive 4’ by 6’ bronze depicts the “turning point of America’s Revolutionary War,” when British General Burgoyne surrendered his sword to American General Gates. The event was a pivotal moment in America’s quest for independence. This impressive new work of art was created by Chas Fagan, a nationally known painter and sculptor. The subject is based on artist John Trumbull’s famous oil painting called “The Surrender of John Burgoyne,” which is prominently housed in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. The “Saratoga Surrender Sculpture” is now on display in the City Center’s main lobby for the pub-lic to appreciate Monday through Friday from the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. through Monday, May 19, 2014. The City Center is located at 522 Broadway in Saratoga Springs, NY. After a tour of various venues in Saratoga County, the artwork will be permanently placed in a new memorial park called the Saratoga Surrender Site, south of Schuylerville, NY. The City Center is pleased to have another occasion to welcome the community through its doors and continue the effort of “Bringing People Together.”

CalliNg all mENtorS!CAPITAL DISTRICT - I am I can is a 501(c)3 organization that was created to mentor girls in grades 9 - 12. Programs provide needed encouragement, guidance and advocacy to students as they navigate their high school years and move toward post-graduation goals. We are seeking adult female mentors to work with students on a weekly basis. As a mentor you would spend time with and get to know your student, while developing a relationship that provides sup-port and guidance. If you are looking for some meaningful volunteer work, this may be for you. This program focuses not as much on job skill mentoring, but more on providing a positive role model in the student’s life. You will help the student to develop core values and “encourage young women to discover their dreams, to believe in endless pos-sibilities while empowering them to make it happen”. The organization is currently looking for mentors in the Clifton Park to Glens Falls areas. Immediate needs are to support girls in Hudson Falls, South Glens Fall, Glens Falls, Shenen-dehowa, and Ballston Spa school districts. If you have time on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and would like to have a positive impact on a girl in your community, please contact Founder, Avon Scherff at 518-688-3010 ext 102, or email
