Innovation, SEN and beyondThe curriculum freedoms now in place for ICT from September 2012 mean that

innovation is possible more than ever before

Mobile Devices• Mobile communication is now the single most important

activity many YP rely on to give them identity, connection and a sense of community.

• It is important for all those with a duty of care for young people to understand how new mobile platforms are influencing relationships and behaviour both within and outside the learning environment.

• Mobile and tablet technology requires robust infrastructure

• Mobile and tablet technology not as easy to deploy as conventional PC and Mac based suites.

If you innovate with mobile / tablets or BYOD then make sure you plan to teach how to use them effectively. We can’t assume safe practice by osmosis.

The Cloud

You don’t pay for it so anything can happen – Data Handling Policy

Cloud storage solutions – Seek advice of your LA / Northern Grid or local support network

Cloud based applications – Who’s data is it anyway? A policy in place to ensure that sensitive data is not placed on the cloud.

Twitter – I’m eating a large #donutFacebook – I like like donuts and so does my wifeFoursquare – This is where I eat donutsInstagram – Here’s a polaroid of me eating a donutYoutube – Look at me eating donutLinkedIn – My skills include donut eatingPinterest – Here’s a donut recipeLast FM – Now listening to ‘donuts’

However it needs to be done in a controlled way!

The Social network cannot be ignored

But ….Schools practice

Page 17: Secondary and special good practice - innovating safely

Areas of weakness

• Mobile technology • E-Safety Responsibility • Monitoring and reporting• Staff training• Policies that reflect true practice

Page 18: Secondary and special good practice - innovating safely

What can I do then Dan?• Ensure policies are up to date for students AND staff. They should

also be fit for purpose. • Embrace technology, set up pilot projects• Innovate with a purpose and identify impact on learning• Pupil voice activities – what content do the students want and how

do they want it delivered• Look at a 5 year action plan • Create a new school ICT Vision – Its not about the kit its what you

do with it• SWGfL – 360 degree safe audiy

PROMOTE better use of existing technology such as IWB, Kahn Academy, Learning Platform and so on.
