Ageism or discrimination against individuals based on their age is widespread and generally accepted. The stereotypical beliefs that give rise to ageism are deeply embedded in our society. Ongoing efforts to address sexism and racism have shown that it is possible to change social norms. It is time to STOP defining people based solely on their age.

Join us as we critically examine stereotypical beliefs about later life and discuss the type of action needed to address ageism.

PRESENTATION SERIES

BRINGING BACK CHILDHOODFRIDAY, OCTOBER 25 - 1:30 - 2:30 PM

Presenter: Leah Smith, Early Childhood Educator, Forest School Practitioner

Hear about the Forest School movement in Canada and its mission to return children to outdoor play, connection to nature and unstructured free time to explore. Empowering children to learn how to assess risk, learn basic outdoor skills and understand the cycles of the seasons sounds like something we all grew up with and yet is lacking in today's western culture. Turning 'helicopter' parents into 'hummingbirds' and giving children the necessary space to learn from their mistakes and grow up naturally with the right amount of freedom and responsibility is a beautiful way to ensure our kids grow up to be well-rounded adults.

EXERCISE AT HOME WITH HELP ON THE PHONE

JEAN HADFIELD FELIKSIAKJean has been involved with Senior Centre Without Walls (SCWW) as a participant since October 2012 and as a volunteer for our “Local Authors” section since September 2017. She’s read her self-published memoirs “I Remember: An English WWII Child Evacuee to Canada”; and has continued with telling her stories through “Stories from a Life Well Lived” and “True Life Adventures.” Jean has also been an amazing ambassador over the years in promoting SCWW through interviews with various media, including CBC Radio’s Now or Never program, CBC News, CTV News and the Winnipeg Foundation’s Winnipeg’s Vital Signs publication. “I enjoy sharing my stories with the participants of SCWW. It makes me feel that I am encouraging them to recall some of their own memories. As I tell the stories, I actually relive them in my own mind and that makes me feel happy.”
