Chamber of Commence nominates new officers At a special Sparta Chamber of Commerce meeting held last Wednesday, March 10, nominations were made for officers to serve the organization for the 1971-72 season. Those nominated and their respective office were as follows, according to Chamber President Barth Murray: President, Barth Murray; Vice President, Clark Ham- mer; Secretary, Jim VanderMeer; Treasurer, Doug Fair- child, and Retail Chairman, Alvin Rogers. All of those nominated are presently serving in the respective offices with the exception of Mr. VanderMeer. Mr, Cumings was to see Mr. VanderMeer at the Credit Thrift office to ask him if he would accept the nomination. Those present at the meeting also voiced their opinions on the possibility of adding new members to the board of directors for the organization. It was decided that the following persons be contacted and added to this controlling board: Jack Dufort, Dan Cheslek, Duane Bradford, Elinor Olin, and Bob Zimdar. Before closing, members decided to set the evening of the 22nd of April for the Annual Chamber of Commerce Dinner Meeting, at which time those nominated for office would be brought before the entire Chamber membership for voting on the nominations. The new officers will, at that time, be installed to serve a one year term. -Talk featured at Lutheran Art Show The Tenth Annual Christian Art Show will present Mr. Michael P, Church in a slide-talk entitled " Hav- ing Eyes, See Ye Not!" on Tuesday, April 4, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The presentation at Peace Lutheran Church in Sparta is intended not for artists, says Mr. Church, but for those who are interested in what artists do. The pub- lic is Invited free of charge. Mr. Church juried the Fourth Annual Christian Art Show, conducted by the Sparta Lutherans. The story of how at that time he discovered Kathreen Emery of Grand Rapids and her tapestries was told In the May 19C6 issue of the Reader's Digest. He has given strong support to and spread the name of the annual art ex- hibit since that time. "Michigan's Evangelist of A r t " is what the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts, and Letters declared him to be when It awarded him its coveted Gold Medal in 1958. He is employed as Cultural Activities Director for the University of Michig-an Extension Service. During' the past 25 years, he has many times crisscrossed the state stirring up interest in art and encouraging artists. The slide-talk by Mr. Church is one feature of the tenth anniversary edition of the annual Christian Art Show spons- ored by Peace Lutheran Church of Sparta. Other high- lights this year include drama presented by Norman and Sandra Diet/., professional actors from New York City, on the evening of the openingday, April 4, and a Ladies Coffee on Tuesday morning, April 6, with Chris Stoffel Over- voorde. The focal point of all these activities will be an 80 to 90 piece exhibit of Christian art. On the basis of past ex- perience, about 300 works will be entered for the exhibit. Reinhold Marxhausen of Seward, Nebraska will choose the exhibit from the entries and will also award a number of prizes. More than 30,000 people are expected to see the exhibit during Holy Week, April 4-11. PTA group to meet for enjoyable evening The parents of the Sparta Middle School students are cordially invited to attend a very special meeting Tues- day, March 16, at 7:30 p.m., in which they will be able to see their children participating in various activities. Decision to close Saturday reversed About a month ago a public service notice appeared in tills paper stating that the local Post Office would no longer provide facilities to postal patrons on Saturdays. However, due to the many requests by patrons who use the Post Office on Saturdays, the postmaster has de- cided to remain open Saturday mornings from 8:00 a.m. until noon. According to postal authorities, some adjustments in the Saturday window services offered to the public may be made at a later date, but until then service will con- tinue as it has in the past.
