Letters to the editor
To the Editor Dear Sir:Re: Changes were made last electionIt has been brought to my attention that in my
letter to the editor, published September 3, 2010.I appeared to question the ethics o Mr. B. Mun-
chrath. That was not my intention and I sincerely
apologize to Mr. Munchrath or any embarrassmentthis may have caused him. While Mr. Munchrath and I do not agree politi-
cally, I have no reason to question his ethics nor
was that my intention. My intention was to pointout what I see as a contradiction between the poli-cies o the Wildrose Party and his involvement inthe municipal election. However, any such confictdoes not put into question Mr. Munchraths ethicsand I regret that un ortunate choice o word.
Mr. Munchrath is o the view that I owe him an
apology and I agree. I hope that he accepts my most sincere apology or the incident.Yours,
Mr. R. Henderson

Apology for unfortunate choice of words
To the Editor The Change or Strathmore group held a very
success ul community meeting on Sept. 8. A largenumber o concerns were shared by members o the group and several issues were brought up thatthe group elt were necessary to address by thenext council. The group did agree on key issuesthat candidates must support in order to receive thesupport o the group. They include:
1) An owner o a success ul business (i possible)or experience leading a service club or other recog-
nized group.2) Candidate willing to be transparent and ac-countable in every way including voting records, per diem and expense claims.
3) Support the hiring o an Economic Develop-ment O cer or the town.
4) Possess a clear vision or the economic successo Strathmore.
5) Publicly oppose the rerouting o Highway 1around Strathmore.
6) Be ully aware o the time you will need todedicate to be an e ective member o council.
7) Be committed to revising the current policy onper diem and expense payments to ensure currentspending problems do not occur again.
8) Care ully read over and ensure you ully meetall requirements as set out in the candidate in or-mation package (available on the town website un-
der election 2010 link). We suggest care ully read-ing the entire package but pay special attention topages 6 to 11.
Other issues were brought up the group elt were
important including a need to develop a niche or the town, address the issue o high taxes and highland prices which appear to be prohibiting thegrowth o light industrial tax base in town. Con-cerns were also raised regarding how town sta have been treated in the past. Other issues includethe lack o adequate snow removal, poor develop-mental planning and en orcement, irrigation and
water restrictions. The group learned o some members who are
running or may run or council or mayor posi-
tions. Change For Strathmore is very eager to helpquali ed candidates run their campaigns during theelection.
The common theme rom concerns raised atthis meeting is that there are signi cant problemsplaguing the town which must be addressed now to prevent urther damage to the community. Allmembers at the meeting were in agreement that thestatus quo is not acceptable and changes need to
be made.I you wish to be involved please do not hesitate
to contact us soon. Nominations close in just a mat-ter o days, Sept. 20.
This is your chance to impact how Strathmore isrun or the next three years. By participating in thisprocess over the next month, you can impact whatissues are brought into the next council. By votingon Oct. 18 you can choose who represents you and
your interests or the next three years. Barry MunchrathChange for Strathmore
Local group announces guidelines
To the Editor Strathmore is in an exciting time o opportunities
and challenges. We need e ective, proven leader-ship, which is balanced, responsible and practical,to ensure the best or our community. Over the pastsix years I have been that person. I have learnedthe process and the realities o municipal govern-ment. I have lived and breathed the issues and con-cerns o the Strathmore public. I have been moti-
vated by a strong desire to be involved in ndingthe solutions to problems and an absolute passionand love or this town which I am proud to be alongstanding citizen o .
I am quite cognizant that the issues are not blackand white. I also know that the answers and solu-tions will only evolve over time with the proper leadership, acilitation and an acute amount o pub-lic interaction. I subscribe to a rm belie that last-ing, positive results are only achieved through hard
work, and co-operation. I believe I have the experi-ence, knowledge and commitment that are not only necessary but are critical to sit on Strathmores next
Town Council. A town that I am most pleased tocall my home.
The highway #1 by-pass IS NOT in Strathmores best interest.
In the past I have shown my tenacity to ght or the things that are right, and contest those that arenot. I will always ght, or what is best, or Strath-more.
- Watering restrictions are an issue. I believethere is a need to conserve water but the currentrestrictions are too imposing.
- We need a down town beauti cation plan andto have better street cleaning and snow removal o our downtown core (all over town or that matter).
- And, my thoughts on Recreational Vehicles are well documented.
I would appreciate and need your support. I you would like to discuss any o the issues, or wouldlike to assist with my upcoming campaign, please
eel ree to call me at home (403-934-6300) on my cell (403-324-6300) or send me an e-mail at best.

Letters to the editor
To the Editor I have followed the comments of the persons representing
the Change for Strathmore group for some weeks now, andfeel compelled to comment. Firstly, I applaud any and all resi-dents of Strathmore to get involved with the issues pertainingto their municipality. Being involved by attending council meet-ings, reading town-related articles, following the informationon the Town Web Page and discussing issues with their electedof cials ensures everyone is kept up to date. Persons who takeadvantage of these areas know that transparency has been a pri-ority for this Council. One of my concerns with the Change for Strathmore group is that they appear to be interested in gettingtheir own personal council elected. Sspeaking solely as a citizenof Strathmore, a puppet government concerns me greatly. Cer-tainly, I would hope that any successful candidate in the upcom-ing election will focus his efforts on all of Strathmore, and not
just the desires of a self-interest group. Personal agendas do notusually satisfy the majority of the population. In addition, thereare always two sides to a story, and I will use the ProvincialGovernments plan for Highway 1 re-alignment as an example. It is clear to me that not everyone agrees that creating a ringroad (skirting the outside of the Town boundaries) for Highway 1 is a bad idea, or one that will create nancial ruin.
Inquiries with other municipalities in Alberta where this typeof action has occurred support that theory and refute that -
nancial ruin will occur. A ring road would, in effect, allow for the present Highway 1 portion (in town) to become a major municipal arterial road allowing for parking on both sides andan opportunity to invite truckers traveling through this area tolegally stop and support the businesses that align the roadway. It is very conceivable that a ring road would actually increase
business for the Highway 1 establishments. Personally, I greatly favor this concept rather than the one which would see vehiclestravelling along that same road at 110 KPH, on a six lane high-
way. In closing, I wish to simply point out that, during what wasmost of this councils rst term, a lot did get done, and with a
very minimum increase in municipal taxes! Some, but not all, examples are: Completed Sustainability and Quality of Life Master plans Prepared northwest drainage plan to allow NW Development Installed additional playgrounds/equipment (including chil-drens splash park with S/M Lions)
Purchased new snow blower to increase ef ciency Approved the purchase of a Arial Ladder Truck for Fire Depart-ment Approved/enabled a new skateboard park Provided funding for four additional RCMP Regular Members Designed the new potable water reservoir Approved development of Stages 2, 3 and 4 if Aquatic Center Funded and developed Regional Waterline from Calgary Upgraded Waste Water Treatment Plant (rated state of theart) Relocated and installed new ef uent line from secondary channel to the Bow River Approved and awaiting construction of affordable housingproject (in partnership with Classic Communities and CMHC) Approved and supported a 110 bed assisted-living/senior af-fordable housing complex presently under construction Successfully annexed (after hearing) 18 quarter sections of land from Wheatland County Entered into major wetlands project with Westcreek Develop-ment and Olds College (including the security title to the landsat no cost to the Town) Approved and assisted with development of two new soccer pitches (irrigation lines now installed) Signed agreement with WID for pathways along canal, signedagreement with WID permitting off-leash park to be installed
(development in progress) Approved rst ever Major Area Structure Plan (Westcreek) Completed repaving of 3rd Avenue and Centre Street Installed Traf c Lights (Brent Blvd and Whea tland Trail) Upgraded Brent Blvd pumps to increase water pressure Assisted major businesses with plans to relocate to/in Strath-more (Totem and Home Hardware) Added walking paths (including the Aspen Creek pedestrian
bridge project (to be completed this year) Upgrades to parks, including construction of Birth Forest andan English Rose Garden.
Clearly, these accomplishments were achieved with threeprimary goals: public safety, recreation improvements and eco-nomic development.

On a local level, Strathmore Value Drug Mart has collected over 316 kitz,

Over the past seven years, Value Drug Mart has been providing school supplies forchildren who are unable to begin the school year with the basic necessities. The Kitz 4 Kidz program was introduced to raise more school supplies andawareness for less fortunate children while ensuring donations stay in thecommunity in which they were collected.
Beginning August 1st, Value Drug Mart customers had the option of donating theirchoice of individual school supplies, cash donations or two kitz which weremade up of an assortment of pre-selected school supplies. All told, Value DrugMart stores collected and distributed cash donations, individual school suppliesand over 3,400 kitz during the four-week campaign that concluded on August 28th.

For a few weeks now there has been discussionover whether or not Smith Trucking Services Ltd
would be able to receive a permit regarding twogravel pits near Cluny. Both pits exist on Dianneand Don Browns land; one is to the South and oneto the North.
After weeks of debate and even a few public dis-cussions, decisions have been made. Eugene Foisy,a representative, respectfully withdrew one of hisrequests for a permit.
It would be pointless to have a pit that would be completely exhausted by the building of thisroad, said Foisy, regarding the north pit. One of therequirements of the permit was to make the roadmeet Alberta Transportation standards for a heavy traf c road.
Im not comfortable asking someone to do some-thing we dont do already, said Councillor GlennKoester.
There seemed to be some confusion as to wheth-er there is a set standard concerning situations likethis and Councillor Alice Booth pointed out the factthat it should be xed now. After hearing the northpit will not be used, discussion about other roadsin need of repair came up, including Highway 842.
I think the county and the provincial government better get their ducks lined up and get us a road, said Dianne Brown regarding the 842.
For the south pit, because of the amount of gravelavailable there it is feasible for Smith Trucking tomaintain the road to where it should be, whereason the north it is not.
One of the biggest issues regarding the crushingand hauling of the gravel is the dust. Val Brassardowns Brassard Greenhouses Ltd, and her biggestconcern was the affect the dust would have on her plants.
Were not against it at all, just crush, get it out of there, and its gone, said Brassard.
After many consultations and some research, Bras-sard gured out the full effect the dust should have
on her plants and presented it to council. Since thenthey have been working with council and throughcouncil with the Browns to nd the best option for all parties involved. Foisy agreed to the condition of putting a calcium chloride on the road to help withdust control. Foisy said they did not want to pavethe road, because after they have exhausted the pitthe plan is to return it to agricultural grounds.
The use of calcium chloride did not sit well withBooth, but after some discussion and amendmentsto the permit it was accepted.
Foisy even added to the permit, recommendingthat signs be added in and around the pit to monitor speed limits, et cetera for the safety of the residentsand the workers. Smith Trucking can only haul andcrush Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.,and they can haul only on Saturdays from 8 a.m.until noon.
Coming to a resolution
Wednesday morning in Standard there was a mixture o eelings rom happiness o being back with riends to intrepi-dation and excitment o new classes and new riends. Standard School has started the year o with a great bangand abulous pancake break ast on Friday morning or the entire sta and student body. Thank you to the parent
volunteers who got up early to fip pancakes on the BBQs outside, the sticky, smiling aces said it all. It was excitingto see the gym ull on the rst day (and the Kindergarten class o around 16 wasnt even there). Mrs. Karen Smith i n-troduced hersel and the sta to all the students and reported on what was being taught and o ered by each teacher.
The grade 12 class introduced themselves to the student body and were told that they were to be the best positiveexamples to the younger ones that they could be. One exciting new course or the highschool will be Photography
with Mrs. Phillips (I remember taking that in highschool in Ontario and it was a FUN class). From the sounds o it, itlooks like its going to be another abulous year at school in Standard. The rst Parent Council meeting and Meet
the Teacher Night or parents will be held on Monday, September 13that 7pm at the school Library. School pictures will be taking place on

Blues ans can look orward to a unflled night listening to two time Junoand Maple Blues award winner Jack DeKeyzer September 24. This will be DeKeyzers frst time playing in Strathmore,
but he is no stranger to Alberta. He hasa gig in Edmonton on the 25, and in thepast he has played in Calgary.
I just love to play and its alwaysgood to come out to new places andmeet the olks and have some un. Any show where there is a lot o people andtheyre all having a good time to me is agreat show, said De Keyzer.
De Keyzer played his frst pro ession-
al gig in 1979 and he used to play in arockabilly band in the 80s.
From my earliest memories, Ive al- ways loved music and Ive always beenenamored by the guitar. I grew up inEngland, I spent the frst 10 years o my li e in England and the biggest actin England at that time was Cli Rich-ard. He had a backing band called theShadows and I think thats where I gotthe love o guitar and electric guitar. A couple years later the Beatles came out
and that kind o cinched the deal, I washooked on it, said De Keyzer.
The Strathmore Musical Arts Society has changed things up a bit rom theusual ormat.
We usually present it in a dinner the-atre atmosphere and thats gone over really well with the public, said LindaStorkson.
Now weve started doing pub nights. They are a little bit easier, tickets are alittle bit cheaper so this is why weve sorto expanded our number o shows, saidLenore Stillwell. The ladies and many others are looking orward to a nighto the blues. Storkson said they plan toopen the night with humour, and alsosaid to expect some dancing.
Our group really likes to dance andso we expect lots o dancing too, it goes with the un o it, said Storkson.
There are already a ew more showsplanned, including one on November 6,and there will be a special guest comingin or April Fools Day.
Cocktails are at 7:30 p.m. the 24 andthe show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets areavailable at Music Centre Canada, PJsappliances, Assist Business Centre andPro Water Centre.

Band students at Holy Cross Collegiate,HCC, have already begun undraising asmuch as possible or a trip to Disneyland
in May. From September 2 to 11 the stu-dents were selling coupon books or $40a piece.
We sold 259 books. I think it was re-ally success ul, said Sarah Lyons an orga-nizer or the undraiser.
This is only the second year HCC hashad a band. Fortunately band membersno longer have to be at the school or 7a.m. or practice. It now takes place dur-ing school hours.
A trip to Disneyland sounds like un but or the band, while they will have
un, they are going to compete againstother bands. The members are going tocompete and be a part o the AnaheimHeritage Music Festival rom May 12 to15.
We will compete there and were alsoauditioning or a chance to play at thepark. So i we make the audition the highschool band will get to play at Disney-land or a part o Disney Magic MusicDays and they get to work with Disney
musicians, said Lyons. The audition to play during the MagicMusic Days is taking place in February and Lyons and the band are keeping their fngers crossed that they will be picked.
On September 25, there will be a bottledrive to raise more money and on Oc-tober 22, a Halloween carnival is beingplanned. The carnival will take place atthe school. At this time Lyons is not surehow much tickets will be.
It will be a amily thing, or kids o allages. There will be a silent auction andhaunted house and stu like that. There
will be dinner too, said Lyons. Bandmembers plan to keep undraising aslong as it takes to cover most i not all o the costs o the trip.
Planning for DisneylandRaising money for a good cause

The start of the school year brought a bit of a surprise to manyof the elementary schools in town. Most have had to hire lastminute teaching staff to accommodate the increased enrollmentthis year. At Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy it was a differentstory. Students lined up to say goodbye to Monica Major had tobe let go after the registration numbers came in. Major will stillcontinue to teach in Strathmore at Westmount lementary butwill now be teaching Grades four and six instead of Kindergarten.

The Strathmore Spartans high schoolfootball team started the season off onthe wrong foot with a 34-0 home loss toDrumheller Sept. 11.
Despite the tough loss, head coachCarl Seafoot was optimistic the team canrebound and gain valuable experiencefor the future.
Even though the offence did not col-lect any points, there are things to buildon.
We did have some positive things, but(we) just couldnt seem to carry on or complete a drive, said Seafoot in an e-mail to the Times. Mental miscues anderrant ows negated the running game.
The passing game had some hands andreceiver problems. The good thing isthat we did move the ball.
The rest can be xed.Meanwhile, the defence was solid in
the season opener.(We had) a good effort from the (de-
fence), added the coach. We had acouple of breakdowns in coverage andattempted (some) high tackles. We hadsome good stops.
The Spartans are back in action this weekend, when they host Rundle onSept. 18 (1 p.m.).
BantaM teaM losesheartBreaker
The Strathmore Spartans Bantam foot- ball team made signi cant improvementin week two of their season.
Unfortunately it was not enough toget a win, as the Spartans lost 16-14 inSpringbank Sept. 11.
After trailing 13-0, the Spartansstepped up their game in the second half and impressed head coach Rob Mussel-man in the process.
In the second half we pulled up our socks and didnt allow a rst down theentire second half on defense, said thecoach in an e-mail to the Times.
The offence came alive in the secondhalf, as Brandon Labonte scored a 35-
yard touchdown on the rst play fromthe line of scrimmage. The Spartans tooka 14-13 lead late in the half, but Spring-
bank nailed a 35-yard eld goal to winthe game.
The boys should hold their headshigh, said the coach. They showedthemselves (that) they can play thisgame at a high level and need to play the whole game.
We look forward to playing this weekend.
The bantam team will now travel toDrumheller on Sept. 18, before returninghome on Sept. 25 to host Wetaskiwin (3p.m.).
Peewee sPartans show character
The Strathmore Spartans Peewee foot- ball team showed their no quit attitudein a 36-12 home loss to the Red Deer Steelers Sept. 11.
According to head coach Doug Klauck,it was the rst time many of his playersever participated in an organized foot-
ball game. The game went well - it was the rst
game for a lot of my players and they held their own, said Klauck. It was agood learning experience for a lot of
them. The game situations are similar topractices about getting hit and thingslike that there is a little more trust anda little less fear.
According to Klauck, the Spartans were very resilient versus an upper-ech-elon team.
They didnt quit, said the coach of his team. We were playing against thedefending provincial champions andeven when we got down in the secondhalf, (we) never quit.
The Peewee squad will now travel to Wetaskiwin on Sept. 18, before returninghome to host Sylvan Lake on Sept. 25 atnoon.
Spartans handed loss in home opener
The Spartans football team didnt have much luck when they played the Drumheller Titans on Sep-tember 11. Even though the team didnt do as well as they had hoped they still fought hard until thevery end.

After the UFA Bisons held their an-nual Red & White game Sept. 12 atthe Strathmore Family Centre, there
were plenty of dif cult decisions to be made.
And at this time of year, the moredif cult the choices, the better it is for
the team.Unfortunately for UFA Bisons headcoach Parry Shockey, he has to be the
bearer of bad news to the players whodidnt make the cut.
Its never easy, commented Shock-ey on telling a player he never madethe squad. Youre dealing with eliteathletes at this level we had someguys who made some huge strides so when you have to tell them thattheyre still not good enough, itstough. But I mean its part of the busi-ness, we realize that.
Most of the kids know if they played well enough to advance.
With the eight eligible returningplayers on the sidelines, the game fea-tured 20 players on each side lookingto make a nal impression.
After the white jerseys won thegame 3-2, the coaching staff trimmedthe roster to approximately 30 play-ers. That number can be increased by a handful of players who are still at
junior camps. However, Shockey said he was im-
pressed with the players who tookpart in the Bisons camp.
I dont think that there is any an-other association probably in Albertathat had the number of kids try outthat we have, said the coach. Thatsays a lot about (our) surrounding
communities for their development. Were in a pretty good position.
In saying that, there are guys thatare probably going to get cut off of this hockey club that could be playingsomewhere else (in this league). Un-fortunately, thats the dilemma.
However, the team did its due dili-gence selecting the players thus far.
Weve had a very transparent camp
most of the evaluators didnt evenknow who the players were they only knew them as numbers, saidShockey. The coaching staff knew
who some (of the players) were. In allhonesty I didnt ask who a returningplayer was until (Saturday). It didntmatter to me I said from the begin-ning I was going to take the best play-ers.
Theres been a few guys that Ivehad to talk to and say hey, listen,
youre not as secure as you think youare.
You expect your returning playersto be returning, but when you havethis talent base, there are going to besome guys pushing (the veterans).
The Bisons will continue their eval-uation process this weekend, whenthey host their annual pre-seasontournament Sept. 16-19 at the Strath-more Family Centre.
The team will host Red Deer Sept.16 (6:30 p.m.) before tangling withthe Calgary Northstars Sept. 17 (5:30p.m.) and Calgary Buffaloes on Sept18 (11:45 a.m.).
The semi nals will take place Satur-day afternoon with the third and rstplace games on Sunday morning.
I would like to see the guys keepelevating their games, said Shockey of the tournament.
Bisons trim roster
The UFA Bisons held their annual Red & White game Sept. 12 at the Strathmore Family Centre. After the white jerseys won the game 3-2, the Bisons trimmed their roster heading into this week-end preseason tournament.

The Strathmore Fam-ily Centre was the place
to be Sept. 14 for fast,hard-hitting, action-packed hockey as the
WHLs Calgary Hitmenhosted the Medicine Hat
Tigers. With a capacity crowd
on hand, players on both squads were look-ing to impress their re-spective coaches andearn a spot in the regu-lar season lineup.
One of those playerseyeing a position withthe Hitmen was de-fenceman Keaton Lubin,
who toiled with the UFA Bisons last season. After scoring two goals and17 assists with the local
triple-A midget team, the 16-year-old hopesto lock a position withthe Calgary junior team,
which lost the exhibi-
tion contest 3-1 to the Tigers.I have to keep it sim-
ple and try and makethis team, said Lubin.I have to work on my D zone a little more one-on-one, coming outof the corners stuff like that.
According to Lubin, playing in the WHL isexciting. However, play-ing in your old stomp-ing grounds with a WHLteam is even better.
It feels great, saidthe defenceman, whohas two more years of eligibility in triple-A midget ranks. The old
team was practicingthere on the other side,so some of the guys
were watching.I had a great year
here and I developeda lot. I became a better puck moving defence-man (by playing) for this team. I love the icehere its big.
Hitmen goaltender Michael Snider, whoholds a 26-7-2 recordin the WHL as a backupgoaltender, is hopingto take the reins as thestarter this season.
The former UFA Bi-sons netminder, whoalso enjoyed his mini-homecoming in Strath-more, was all business
between the pipes.Im still trying to
prove a point to the
coaches, said Snider. Ineed to be the number one guy this year, so Ineed to step up and wingames for the team. In a
game like this I neededto battle and keep theteam in it I think I didthat.
However, despite theloss, the Hitmen enjoyedtheir trip to Strathmore, said head coach Mike
Williamson.Its fantastic, the
support weve gottenthrough the three gamesso far in the smaller communities, said thecoach. A lot of the guysare from smaller cen-tres, so its nice to beable to give back a little
bit as you do get sup-port from the smaller communities.

This year at REVS, Sep-tember 2, the Healthy Liv-ing Active Living, HEAL,members decided to try something new. In thepast there has been askate exchange, in whichany skates were taken toHome Hardware, wherethey would be sharpened
or ree and then any- body who needed skatescould go over there andpick them up or ree.
This year HEAL decidedto do a sports swap.
Were trying to encour-age people to do physicalactivities and skating andsports provide that op-
portunity. The idea is toget people motivated to
do sports and physical ac-tivities or (their) health, said Robert Breitwieser amember o HEAL.
During REVS, any andall sports equipmentcould be swapped in tothe HEAL booth.
It was slow (and) wedidnt have many peopleexchange things, saidBreitwieser. Having aslow start to the sportswap isnt going to de-ter the group rom doingit again next year. Thegroup has already begunplanning ways to revisethings about the swap, tomake it better and havemore people aware o it.
The skate exchange will still be taking placethroughout the winter and people can donate
their old skates at HomeHardware.
It fnancially helpspeople and it makes ac-tivities like skating andother sports a ordable
or people. The idea ispeople who no longer need skates or i they have grown out o them, rather than throwingthem away, take themdown there and thensomebody else can usethem, said Breitwieser. It is ree or anyone tohead down and exchangeor gain a pair o skates.Breitwieser is hoping tohave another great skate,
where the arena is rentedout and people can goskating in the a ternoon
or ree one day this win-ter.
