A senseless act of vandalism has left one Strathmore couple with questions, and a $1,000 hole in their pockets. Sometime between Jan. 12 and 13, someone broke out the back windows of both Alice Van Bostelen and her boyfriend Chris Rorem’s cars, but didn’t steal anything.

While both are happy nothing was stolen, they are upset by having to replace the windows at all.

“It was $1,000 to get them re-placed, so it’s not a huge deal but it’s a big deal. $1,000 is a lot of money to spend on something that really isn’t your fault,” said Van Bostelen.

Rorem came home Thursday night around 6 p.m. He noticed the damage at 7 a.m. the next morning when he was leaving for work.

“We park in our back alley, but we have a parking lot and lots of other people park in the alley. No one else had their windows destroyed, just us,” said Van Bostelen.

“The police have taken our re-port and have said there’s nothing they can do. It’s definitely not little kids because the board they threw through my window weighs a lot, and they threw a big rock through my boyfriend’s window. It’s not like 10-year-olds being goofy, it’s grown up teenagers…people who could actually get in trouble if they got caught.”

Sgt. Kevin Reilly with the Strath-more RCMP detachment said they will continue to work on the case, but if it is a one-time thing the chance of catching somebody is rare, but it does happen.

“Do we catch everybody every time? No, and if a lot of it’s one time things and kids are stupid and they’re drunk and walking home and they do it, it’s pretty hard to catch them ever because they don’t ever do it again, they don’t talk about it. It’s the kids that continue to do it, sooner or later, they’re go-ing to be caught,” said Reilly.

The wind-up meeting for the Christ-mas Hamper Society took place Jan. 9, and it showed the numbers for hamper applications were down 2.5 per cent from the previous year.

“They were down slightly…I think that may possibly be a sign that the economy is improving, and that’s a good trend because last year we were also down very slightly as well. Pos-sibly the economy is getting better,” said Dave Collins, chairperson with the Christmas Hamper Society.

Though applications were down there was still the need to assist over 1,000 adults and children in the area, which represents about eight per cent of the local population.

Cash donations were up by 2.5 per

cent as well, and food donations went up by an astonishing 33 per cent. Col-lins said the toy donations have re-mained steady throughout the years.

“We seem to have set all sorts of re-cords, considering that four or five weeks ago all those tables were empty,” said Collins.

“It’s quite remarkable really, the amount of toys and food that quite liter-ally flooded in the last few weeks of the campaign just before Christmas there, amazing, just absolutely amazing.”

There was a total of over $133,000 donated between the cash, toys and goods. This year the Christmas Hamper Society also helped out their sister or-ganization, the Wheatland Food Bank, by passing along some of the food do-nations which have a fairly short shelf life and would not be usable for the next Christmas Hamper campaign.

After serving as the General Manager of the Standard Co-op for the last ten years, Doug McLaren retired when he handed over the keys to the store on Monday, Jan. 16, to the new General Manager Guy Christie.

Christie is a local Standard resident and has always enjoyed a challenge. He realizes that small, rural stores need to offer something unique to the commu-nities they are in, in order to compete with the larger retail centers.

In order to keep the local store run-ning and offering amenities to its resi-dents some changes need to be made in what and how it sells. Standard has a fantastic hardware store that is part and parcel with the Co-op Grocery Store with an identity all on its own. It brings in specialty items and custom orders product for the many and vari-ous farmers in the area who don’t mind

spending the extra dollar to support the local retailer.

Customer service and friendly knowl-edgeable staff is the key to most com-petitive retail centers and Standard is no different. Consumers want to be welcomed and helped in a timely fash-ion. What is nice about a small town business is that everyone knows every-one else and there is a personal rela-tionship between customers and staff.

After being asked how his first day as GM went, Christie replied “Well, an in-teresting day at the store. The staff are great, they are very willing to help and the thing that we all have in common is that we want to enjoy our jobs, be productive and have fun. The custom-ers are great as well and the staff have a really good rapport with them.”

Christie has some innovative ideas for the store in the coming days and is eagerly looking forward to imple-menting them and increasing the stores sales and productivity.

In 2007, Greengate Power Corporation approached land-owners in the Wintering Hills area of Wheatland County about installing windmills to mine energy. The land is cur-rently cultivated and grazing land.

On Jan. 10 representatives appeared at the Wheatland County Municipal Planning meeting to update council on the project progress.

“We have renamed the project the Wheatland project, and it remains a high priority for Greengate,” said Dan Tocher, Vice President of Stakeholder Relations for Greengate.

The windmills will sit on 28,000 acres of private land, located in Central Alberta, 30 kilometres southeast of the Town of Drumheller, and will produce 150mw of power.

Tocher emphasized that the project has generated posi-tive feedback from both stakeholders and landowners. Landowners have negotiated leases, supplemented by a royalty payment incentive, and those leases come up for

review this year. All current leases remain maintained and the collection of wind and environmental data is ongoing.

However, there have been some delays to the project.Tocher said investors finance the company and the down-

turn in the markets has had an impact on the company but they are weathering the storm. The company recently sold their Halkirk holding and reinvested it in the Black Spring Ridge project that is located in Vulcan County. Access to transmission lines was available and it made the financial sense.

Suncor has installed an adjacent windmill project to the Wheatland site and is utilizing a majority of the transmis-sion tower’s capabilities.

“Upgrades to the grid are a critical component to our industry, but we are hopeful for a good outcome,” said Tocher, who anticipates the project to be up and running by 2014.

Deputy Reeve Ben Armstrong said landowners were ask-ing questions about the site’s progress. Tocher committed to contacting leaseholders within two months.

Waiting On Windmills

The fruits of several years of hard work were enjoyed with a dinner and dance as community members gathered to celebrate the renovation of the Gleichen Community Hall last Saturday night, Jan. 14.

Over one hundred tickets were sold for the evening which began with a dinner, prepared by the hall board members in their new commercial kitchen and eaten by guests seated at new tables and chairs and served on new dishes, followed by a short program of thanks.

The project began with hall chairperson Alice Booth and Doris Lindman approaching possible donors, private and government, as well as applying for various available

grants. It was a bit daunting at first, but Booth said as the process unfolded they learned as they went how to raise the needed funds.

In total over $250,000 was raised for the renovations which included new kitchen, appliances, supplies as well as a complete overhaul of the bathrooms. There is still some work to be done such as roof repairs, but all of the more visible work was finished for the celebration.

In her remarks, Booth recognized Keith Ford for his help in costing out the work and Nick Holt for his efforts to build it. Individuals and organizations who contributed to the endeavor were acknowledged for their generosity.

Booth praised the board’s ability to not just work hard but to work together, no matter what obstacles they en-countered, and in the end it all came together.

No little girl dreams of working in a funeral home, but for Sarah Van Bus-sel she has realized now it’s where she wants to be.

The Van Bussel family owns the Wheatland Funeral Home, and both her parents and brother Glen work at the home.

“I started working here when I was 18. I had done a semester at the Uni-versity of Lethbridge right after high school and they asked me if I wanted to work here and do secretarial work for the most part,” said Van Bussel.

“I intended to go to school in Sep-tember for sewing but then I ended up liking it here so I stuck around and got my (funeral directors) license.”

Working in a funeral home is not something every 23-year-old can say they do, and Van Bussel admits she does get a few reactions when she first tells people, but said most of her friends are used to it by now.

“More so than my job being weird, I find it really rewarding. People come in and they’re sad of course, that’s a given almost every time, and you get to sort of be that person that guides them through it and sort of helps them with as much of the technical stuff as you can,” said Van Bussel.

“They’re just always really apprecia-tive and that’s what you aim for. I re-ally like it in that respect. I think that’s probably what I find myself talking about more than anything else is how much I like that side of it.”

The organization of the job appeals to her personality and she loves work-ing with people. Van Bussel said it’s the people in the community that make the job, and isn’t sure she would enjoy it as much if she worked in the city.

if they were my kids or not…if they weren’t capable of doing it here, they wouldn’t be here. I really enjoy work-ing with them, I do,” said Francis Van Bussel, who owns the home with his wife.

“My kids have grown up with this, although they haven’t been involved on a first hand basis, but they’ve all grown up with being involved with this business. It’s not a real big sur-prise in some ways that they are ca-pable of doing it, it’s a bit of a surprise that they want to do it.”

The job can be taxing, especially when it’s a child or a young adult in-volved, and Francis said it helps to have an outlet that brings you back to reality. For him it is his wife.

East Wheatland in the midst of Phase 2 of school restructuringManny everett Times Contributor

Residents and members of the com-munities of Gleichen, Hussar, Rocky-ford and Standard are continuing to muddle through the East Wheatland school situation.

With the future of their schools up in the air, Golden Hills School Division (GHSD) board in the latter part of 2011 held Marketplace meetings as informa-tion sessions for community members in each of the areas.

Now GHSD is in the middle of the second phase of their study, whereby, as part of the continuing process to-wards the development of a solution for the East Wheatland area schools, a working group has been formed with four people representing each school community.

These 16 working group members have been and will continue to meet throughout January and February to consider the information and investi-gate various options and potential so-lutions for East Wheatland schools.

Though this group will not be mak-ing any final decisions, they will be re-viewing the information from the mar-ketplace meetings and investigating the viability of a variety of possible solu-tions. This group will also be sharing information with their broader commu-

nities and helping to collect feedback through surveys from parents and com-munity members throughout the East Wheatland area.

The hope, from the GHSD board, is that through this process of investiga-tion and feedback, some clearer options will emerge that can be seen to have the potential for support of parents in all the East Wheatland communities. This will allow Golden Hills to proceed to the next planned phase of the pro-cess. At that time, by way of another public meeting - similar to those held in the fall - Golden Hills would present the best options and receive feedback prior to a decision by the Board.

Updated progress reports from this committee will be posted on the GHSD website (www.ghsd75.ca). Names and contact information of the 16 group members will be posted on the website as well. If people would prefer to email the working group please send emails to [email protected]. E-mails to this address can be sent to the entire group or to a single individual.

In the weeks ahead GHSD (with the help of the working group) will be surveying parent and community members and informing them of some of the various possibilities in keeping with the promise of transparency and what is in the best interest of the chil-dren in the East Wheatland.

Classic fairytale comes to life at Strathmore highShannon LeCLair Times Reporter

The classic tale of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ was shown on the Strathmore High School, SHS, stage this week. The show began with a matinee on Jan. 15 and played until Jan. 18, and was performed by the choir and dance class.

The story of Belle, which is the French name equivalent of Beauty, and the Beast was first written in 1740, and was made into a Walt Dis-ney film in 1991.

beginning of the school semester her class was told they would be doing a production of ‘Beauty and the Beast.’ She said the students began right away to figure out what they would need to do to prepare for auditions.

“I was really happy, there was two of us who tried out and both of us got it, so that was really great,” said Ellis.

“It was one of those things that you don’t really watch as you grow up,” said Ellis about ‘Beauty and the Beast’

“I think it was two or three years ago I re-watched it and then just fell in love with it again, because it actu-ally was just a great movie.”

The realism of the movie is her fa-vourite thing about it.

“I think how real it is… she falls in love with somebody just completely based on who they are as a person and I think that’s a really great lesson that we should be teaching kids, and we should be teaching everyone re-ally,” said Ellis.

She has also performed in Hair-spray, the Nightmare before Christ-mas, and Wicked on the SHS stage.

Though her thoughts began to wa-ver from a career on the stage over the last few years, this production helped rekindle that spark.

“It was what I had planned to do forever, for as long as I can imagine. Then I kind of just thought about it, because it’s something that’s really hard to go to school for and to be re-ally successful at,” said Ellis.

“Right now I’m just trying to really figure out what I want to do. Being in a production like this is really spark-ing that love for me and I’m trying to figure out what to do.”

The Dalemead Quilters have been meeting one or two nights a month for the past 30 years. They have over 50 members from all over. This wonderful group of quilters have donated hundreds of quilts over the years to Victim Services, the Crisis Shelter and the Store Front School. Their passion and compassion is immeasurable.

Open House #3 in Strathmore, states “Highways 1 and 22X are designated as future freeways, with ac-cess only via interchanges”.

If 22X becomes a freeway and it is connected to Hwy 1 west of Calgary, and connected to Hwy 1 by 901 east of Calgary, is it not reasonable to assume this route would not become the new Hwy 1, with the present stretch from Gleichen, through Strath-more, to Chestermere becoming 1A?

This new #1 would be about 15 miles shorter than the present route around Calgary from Gleichen us-ing the Stoney Trail North bypass. This would re-duce the traffic on the new 1A making it quite ad-

equate for its main function of serving local traffic, without any urgent need to bypass Strathmore. Once the SE portion of Stoney Trail is completed, it will probably cause much of the non-commuter traffic to avoid Strathmore.

Because the industrial area is mainly located in East Calgary, it would be desirable to upgrade Glen-more Trail and the present 1A. The funds saved by re-aligning the highway around Strathmore could be used for upgrading commuter routes.

Decisions should be made regarding the SW Ring Road (Bypass) in Calgary before any final decisions are made concerning Strathmore.

Questions need answers for future road plans

To the EditorI am writing this letter in support of my son, Ross

Water Chief who is a 14-year-old, Grade 9 student at Crowther Memorial Jr. High School. He recently had the misfortune of having his silver 4G iPod with blue case and headphones stolen during one of his classes.

You may know of my son, or someone like him. He is an honest, hardworking individual who keeps out of trouble by staying active. He is a hockey play-er and attends two practices on the weekdays and plays hard for the bantam Storm on the weekends. When he is not playing you will find him working as a referee or linesmen at one of your children’s hockey games.

A couple of Sunday’s ago, he was up and out of the house by 8:30 a.m. in order to work a few games at an Atoms tournament before his own game in Co-chrane at 6 p.m. For those not familiar with referee-ing, the pay is not excessive and at times, for your efforts, you will receive verbal abuse from the fans, players, coaches and parents alike.

But he enjoys working those games because he knows at the end of the game he will receive a white envelope containing his modest pay; pay which he puts aside until he has enough money to purchase an item he wants. We encourage him because we know it builds character and we are trying to raise our children to be honest, productive, contributing members of this great community, who not only work hard but appreciate the value of something they’ve worked hard for, like the iPod.

When I first heard his iPod was stolen I was tempt-

ed to leave this alone, a lesson to be learned by him for bringing his iPod to school. But then what kind of parent would I be if I did not try to teach him to stand up for what he thinks is right, and incidents like this are happening far to often in our schools and community. Two months ago my daughter had her cell phone, an item she earned, stolen at the same school. The phone was recovered after her friends spotted another student playing with it, even though he had taken parts off the phone in order to disguise it.

While some may think it is my children’s fault for bringing their items to school in the first place, in this day and age, maybe it is. But I will respond by asking why does it have to be this way? Why do we constantly have to be on guard for individu-als who think nothing of stealing some else’s hard earned possessions? On guard for unscrupulous acts committed by people who should know right from wrong? Today it may just be an iPod, a cell phone; tomorrow it could be your wallet, your purse, your car, or worse.

While my son probably won’t see his iPod again, I can only ask of parents, if you see your child play-ing with an item that you know is not theirs, maybe you should inquire where they got it and if stolen, have them return it to its rightful owner. By doing so you may be putting a smile back on one child’s face while leading another down a path to an honest, brighter future.

1 lb Italian sausage1 clove garlic, minced2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth1 can Italian-style stewed tomatoes1 cup sliced carrots1 can white or red kidney beans2 small zucchini, cubed2 cups spinach - packed, rinsed and torn1/4 tsp ground black pepper1/4 tsp salt

In a stockpot or Dutch oven, brown sausage with garlic. Stir in broth, tomatoes and carrots, and season with salt and pepper. Reduce heat, cover, and simmer 15 minutes. Stir in beans with liquid and zucchini. Cover, and simmer another 15 minutes, or until zucchini is tender.Remove from heat, and add spinach. Replace lid allowing the heat from the soup to cook the spinach leaves. Soup is ready to serve after 5 minutes.

The debate goes on – which is better? A traditional top loading washer, a high efficiency top loader or a high efficiency front loader? And is there a clear winner? Most of us use our washing machines on a pretty regular basis. More and more we have varying types of fabrics and blends in our clothes and clothing is not cheap. Believe it or not, there is a huge amount of study that goes into laundry. Different/blended fabric types, stain removal, the removal of phosphates from detergents, water & energy use, all are being intensely studied by manufacturers.

Traditional top load washer;Uses regular detergent and has faster wash times. They use large amounts of water and energy and the agitator can cause wear on clothes. Generally they clean well on common fabrics but have less capacity and lower spin speeds resulting in clothes not being as well rinsed or dry at the end of the cycle.

High efficiency top load washer;Uses high efficiency detergent and much less water and energy, (Energy Star rated) although have longer wash times. Generally very accommodating to cleaning various fabric types and with no traditional agitator, cause less wear on clothes. They have larger capacity and higher spin speeds resulting in good rinsing and dryer clothes at the end of a cycle. They cannot be ‘stacked’ but may have less vibration and ‘odour’ issues than a front load. Interestingly, the front load washer first appeared to be taking over the market but now the HE top load washer is becoming very popular.

High efficiency front load washerUses high efficiency detergent and have the most efficient water and energy use ratings, (Energy Star rated), of the domestic washer products. Although they also have longer wash times, most have an excellent cycle selection that can accommodate any laundry requirement. They have large capacity and high spin speeds resulting in good rinsing and dryer clothes at the end of a cycle without any agitator wear issues. Generally they can be ‘stacked’ but are more sensitive to floor/vibration issues. They do require some simple periodic maintenance, (cleaning), by the consumer. The majority of all types of washers are much more water and energy efficient than they once were. The most important single issue is what you – the consumer – actually need in a washing machine. Quite honestly, there is little point in buying a huge capacity, all the features, high efficiency washing machine if you only do one load of basic laundry a week. At the same time, an active family will tremendously benefit from the time and cost savings with the large capacity, cycle (fabric) selection and water/energy efficiencies of a high efficiency washer.

Don’t rely on advertising or spectacular claims; a smart, savvy and informed consumer is the only way to be. Remember – there are four sides to every story; one side, the other side, the political/media side and the truth. Suggested reading: Is That a Fact? The Thiessen family proposed a revision to the Hwy 1 to Wheatland council at the Jan. 17 meet-ing, which they felt would give benefits to resi-dents of the County and the Town of Strathmore.

The proposal is to swing three quarters of a mile south of the proposed Cheadle overpass and continue straight for four miles through the Area Service Plan, connecting to the current ring road at the canal south of Strathmore. This plan utilizes the existing Hwy 1 as a service road and leaves existing accesses in place.

“We are all aware growth is inevitable and we feel this plan would consider the town and coun-ty as a whole,” said Karla Theissen.

Their suggestion would increase the amount of industrial development that could occur and place it between the two major roadways. They compared the plan to the existing setup now in place for the city of Red Deer. The Theissens be-lieve landowners would benefit from the move by the increased land prices for commercial property. They also suggested developers would be more interested in property serviced by two major routes. More area available would take into consideration the Town of Strathmore’s growth and the Wheatland County Area Structure Plan for the next decade. Elimination of the second interchange would also save the province money.

The concern of town residents that the over-pass at Cheadle is too far from Strathmore was brought to Alberta Transportation’s attention at the open houses, and there was no indication that running the freeway straight through Strath-more was feasible.

“Whether the ring road leaves the current Hwy 1, one mile out or four will make no differ-ence,” said Theissen. They felt upgraded signage would draw freeway traffic into the municipal businesses.

Wheatland council suggested the plan has mer-its but their support would have to be echoed by Strathmore’s council, for Alberta Transportation to consider the plan.

“If we go to the province and Strathmore said we are against it, Alberta Transportation won’t go for it,” said Councillor Ben Armstrong. “If one goes for the changes and the other doesn’t we will be at loggerheads.”Gleichen library at crisis point

Members from the Gleichen library appealed to council for additional funding to cover their operating costs.

“We appreciate the past funding, but unfortu-nately we are at a crisis point and are facing clo-sure,” said Faydra Burne spokesperson for the library.

The library began in 1883 and had previ-ously disappeared once before, until revived in the 1970’s. The county funds all the libraries in its region through per capita payments to the Marigold Library, who administers the funds for them. Grant applications by the Gleichen library board and community fundraising supplement the library costs but still incurs shortfalls.

“Fundraising in a small community is no easy task,” said Burne.

Last year the county gave the library an addi-tional $12,000 to cover costs.

“We pay money to the Marigold Library System that is to go into the bricks and mortar of our libraries,” said Armstrong.

Council plans to readdress the funding issue with Marigold to determine why funds are not trickling down to the local libraries. Council has the option to withdraw funding from the admin-istration of funds, and can set up an independent system to deal with County libraries if necessary.

Carseland Fire Chief Al Jensen approached council for clarification of the emergency re-sponse policy regarding potential accidents at the new windmill sites. The Dalum service had been approached by Suncor to provide assistance in case of emergencies. Jensen also wondered if council could discuss high angle rescue situ-ations, as there were other industrial and agri-

cultural facilities within fire department jurisdic-tions, and provide direction to the fire services.

“We have been told that serious injuries occur if victims of windmill accidents are not released from their harnesses within one half hour,” said Jensen. He said crews do not want to be faced with an emergency of this nature and have no training or means to extricate victims. He indi-cated some of the volunteers have expressed in-terest in taking training.

Since volunteers, not paid personnel, man rural fire crews, Councillor Ben Armstrong reinforced that crews were to provide ground support only.

Council’s main concern is for the safety of the volunteers, with subsequent liability and funding issues.

Gerald Skibinsky, Protective Services Coordi-nator, said training for high angle rescue and windmill certification courses run about $3,000 per man with significant equipment replacement costs.

Armstrong doubted that when push came to shove, few volunteers would be willing to risk their lives in windmill rescue situations. Physical fitness of the rescuer is another consideration in a safe recovery. He stated there were specialty teams which Suncor could contract to deal with such situations. Councillors reinforced their ap-preciation for the risks volunteer fire crews face in responding to motor vehicle and fire calls; but felt they would not commit crews to the wind-mill rescues without more information from Suncor.

A requirement of Suncor’s planning permit states they must have an emergency response plan, said Skibinsky. Coun-cil asked for a meeting with Suncor over this issue.Utility costs Up For coUnty

In 1995, the county bought a 30-acre gravel pit from a farmer. At that time, they re-quired the farmer to pay a one-dollar lease paid to farm the unused land. The gravel pit is now closed and the land reclaimed. The former owner has sold his property to a new owner. The new owner is now seeking to lease the reclaimed gravel pit; how-ever, leases for land have risen to approximately $900 to $1,200 per year. Council moved that the new farmer could lease the land for one year at the one-dollar rate, while a reassessment is done on the property to determine the new rate, or a reclama-tion certificate is obtained al-lowing the land to be resold.

Pat FuleFule for Thought

I tried to watch “Coronation Street” recently. I really tried, but I felt like I was watching a video signal from an-other planet! Sorry, Molly…right now I’ll bet you’re saying, “bloody hell!”

The show (believe it or not), takes place on a street, but most scenes, I guess, are in a pub. That in itself is confusing to me … I thought people in England drink tea … but no, these characters are constantly in a pub. It’s like Cheers, but instead of “Everybody knows your name”, it’s “Everybody knows your Life”!

I even know of a pipefitter named Steve, who has to be home at the exact time the show is on! Hmmm … a pipe-fitter hooked on a “soap” … interesting. I guess he’s never heard of recording

shows on a PVR?In one series of episodes, a tram came

off the track and crashed on Corona-tion Street! How horrible, it must have been frightening. You’d think people would feel safest in a hospital, shelter, or church, but no, these people stay in the pub!

So … you can be drunk in a pub and survive a train crash on Coronation Street! Part of the charm of the show, I guess, is the way they talk. But I won-der if they even understand each other, I sure don’t. Imagine one character say-ing: “Cor Blimey”, and the others not having a clue what he meant!

Sometimes, people get so wrapped up in shows that they see similarities between characters and real people. I have a friend whose mother-in-law turned to the son-in-law, and said, “Bloody hell--- here comes Onslo!”

Now I have no idea who this “Onslo” is, but I think my friend has stopped wearing sleeveless t-shirts … which is actually safer for all concerned!

Debbie is hooked on “Young and Restless” at our house … she has weeks saved on the PVR. Actually, her dad has just gotten into using his new PVR. Yep … he had 137 episodes of “Wheel of Fortune” saved, even though he doesn’t even watch the show! It took a long time to delete them all!

Whenever, I need some “me” time, I remind Debbie that she’s got LOTS of “Y&R” episodes on the PVR to catch up on! Now, if I was smart like Fred Flintstone, I would slip off to “Joe Rockhead’s for a beverage!

In “Young and Restless”, everyone’s been married to everyone else … you need a scorecard to keep track. But NEVER ask your wife what’s going on

DURING the show … it’s not pretty. I got hooked on a Zombie show called “The Walking Dead.”

It’s like a soap opera, but zombies chase the main characters to try and eat them! Combining zombies and Young and Restless might be a cool idea. A Zombie Jack Abott may attack Victor, and rip off his face! A Zombie Billy might also have to be shot, to stop hurt-ing Victoria! Wow, I just realized how pathetic I sound, knowing WHO these characters are.

PVRs, and zombies, and soaps … oh my!



Minor Hockey Week is taking place all over Canada this week. The week is a way to recognize the sport for its positive influence and benefits to the community

Strathmore Minor Hockey Strathmore Minor Hockey (SMH) has been able to

remain steady with their enrollment numbers since last year. Concerns about the cost of hockey prohibiting some players from lacing up and hitting the ice are something SMH President Wayne Hansen is keeping an eye on.

“The biggest thing for me is we want the kids in-volved in hockey because hockey teaches you more than just about the game of hockey. It teaches you a lot of life skills, I have a lot of friends that I still have that I grew up playing hockey with,” said Hansen.

“You make life long friendships because of that, and I think that’s why it’s very important for us to have a very strong minor hockey program in Strathmore and in every community, We’re teaching our kids how to be part of a team.

“It’s not just about being part of a sports team, it’s about being part of a team at work as well. When they go into the work force they need to be part of a team and they need to know what it takes to be part of a team and make that team successful.”

In January SMH kids had a chance to participate in a UFA Bisons clinic and a Stabler Goal Tending Inc. goal-ie clinic, both of which Hansen said were successful.

One way SMH is trying to raise funds to help supple-ment the costs of hockey is with a raffle. Pure Coun-try Meats have donated the wrapping and selling of a cow. First prize and second prize is half of a beef cut and wrapped valued at $1,000, and the third prize is a hockey registration for the 2012/2013 season equal to $750. Tickets are $2 each and the draw will be Feb. 22 and anyone interested in tickets can contact Strathmore Minor Hockey at [email protected].

Wheatland AAThe Wheatland AA teams have been having a good

teams

being in first, second and third respectively in their divisions.

“I think we’re pretty excited about all of our teams this year, I think they are all either first or second in their divisions. We’re all real happy with the level of play, the coaching that we’re getting and the commit-ment that we’re getting from the parents to make it the best it can be,” said Wheatland AA President Sandy Henry.

“It’s been excellent this year I think we might have lost probably 10 or 12 or 14 games between all three teams and probably they’ve played in the neighbour-hood of 60 or 70 games now. That’s been real success-ful for us.”

The cost of playing hockey is something he thinks they have to struggle with every day, due to increased fuel prices other factors. Another problem for the AA is they rely on casino money, they have a casino account that they are involved with that helps them supplement ice for their teams.

“The casino now instead of one every two years, it’s one every three years. We have to stretch that dollar another third further basically just because we don’t get the frequency of the casinos anymore. That puts pressure on the other side as well,” said Henry.

Despite having to stretch the money further from the casinos, the annual silent auction once again went extremely well. Finding ice time can be another chal-lenge, but Henry said they do use outside ice to supple-ment their Strathmore use.

Hussar Minor Hockey While one of the major challenges Hussar Minor

Hockey still faces is the draw to the bigger centres, President CoreyAnn Sandum said this year they have been able to fill a novice team.

Last year Hussar and Bassano had split the team, and while there are a few players from Bassano on the team Sandum was happy to see her community is able to completely host the team.

“Our program is just steadily improving, we have great coaches and parents, the kids are enjoying it,” said Sandum.

Ice time may be an issue for teams playing out of Strathmore, but in Hussar and smaller communities they have it in abundance.

Another challenge coming forward is the travel time, and that the Central Alberta Hockey league seems to keep expanding their borders. Sandum

agreed there are some challenges with it, but her

teams are used to having to travel. Hockey can teach a lot to the kids who play it, and

Sandum is hoping to draw in more kids next season.“Hope for next year is… have three teams out of

Hussar with the possibility of a peewee team coming home,” said Sandum.

Sandum said team spirit is one of the biggest things she sees the kids learn from playing hockey.

“They have to work together to set up the plays and be able to look around for their buddies to pass to and I think it teaches them respect of each other and coaches.”

Rockyford Minor Hockey Brad Munchrath, Vice President of Rockyford Minor

Hockey, wants to see minor hockey continue in his community for years to come.

“I just want to be involved in my community and do what I can to ensure that it sticks around here for my kids,” said Munchrath.

There are currently two novice teams and a midget team playing out of Rockyford. The two novice teams each consist of ten players a team. Munchrath said they were forced to make two really lean teams because a team can only have 17 skaters and two goalies per team.

Like every coach and parent involved with minor hockey, Munchrath also can see the benefit kids get from playing the game.

“The main thing is teamwork, hockey itself is just good physical activity, but it teaches you teamwork, it teaches you to lose and also how to win,” said Munch-rath.

Having the opportunity to watch the kids grow and improve their skills every year is another thing Munch-rath enjoys about being involved with hockey.

“It’s neat to watch from the grandstands and it’s prob-ably even a better experience for the coaches. Some of the coaches will even follow the kids up from novice right up to midget league, and who knows from there.”

Munchrath said there are a lot of benefits to playing out of Rockyford, such as the amazing ice times, long ice times, the lower fees and the lower arena rentals. Though he knows a lot of players go to Strathmore be-

cause of the AA and AAA teams, he said he want-ed people to know there are other options

even if they don’t make the team in

Strathmore.

Hockey returned to Standard this year when Dave Ellis decided to organize a pond hockey group. There are 19 kids registered aged three to 11-years-old, and Ellis said a majority of them are in the five to seven-years-old range.

“Last time we had hockey was midgets and that’s got to be seven or eight years ago I guess, so we haven’t had any league hock-ey in a while. Our kids were just driving else where to play hockey and I just hate to see all our kids go somewhere else when they could just play here,” said Ellis.

“They’ve come along so much, they’ve

been learning so much and they don’t even know they’re learning, it’s been really suc-cessful.”

Ellis said many people in the community had been speaking about possibly bringing hockey back for the kids, and he opted to step up and organize things. Ellis said his oldest son is five and wanted to play hockey, which was more motivation for him to take the reins.

“I don’t know what the future is as far as whether we’re going to get a league back or what, but for now we’re just pretty content getting the kids out there skating and learn-ing some stuff,” said Ellis.

“It’s been a real success out here…and hopefully one day (we’ll) get a league back.”

Four neighbouring homes were evacuated for the safety of the occupants due to the severity of the fire and wind direction. The occupants of the residence where the fire started were not home at the time. A second residence next to the first, was dam-aged by the fire.

The UFA Bisons remained without a win to start 2012 after losing a pair of home games this past weekend at the Strathmore Family Centre.

The local triple-A midget team was defeated 4-2 by the Calgary NW Flames on Jan. 13, before losing 3-2 to the St. Albert Raiders the following day, extending their losing streak to five games (including the Mac’s Midget championship game).

“We’re just taking shortcuts - our intensity and attention to detail were a little bit better, but we’re still not where we need it to be,” said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen. “Both games we had a lead, both games we had it tied 2-2 going into the third period … and we didn’t have a push back like we needed to.

“When you cheat a little bit … that is the end result.”

By starting the New Year with four straight reg-ular season losses, the Bisons dropped to 12-9-6

on the season, essentially eliminating a chance at a first round playoff bye.

“I think we can cancel one of those (two spots) out,” said Friesen. “To be honest with you, I’m not sure we wanted one of those (byes). We’re a team that likes to play and like to get some momentum built up. You’re going to have to give your best eventually, so may as well start in the first round.”

The Bisons look to get back on track this week-end, when they play a couple of division oppo-nents. The Herd will travel to Calgary to take on the Northstars on Jan. 19, before returning home to host the Calgary Buffaloes on Jan. 22 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

“It’s another big test. We’ve talked about this stretch run for a long time,” said the coach. “It doesn’t get any easier – we’ve got the Northstars twice, the Buffs, Red Deer, St. Albert, Leduc – those are top, top teams in this league and teams that are ahead of us in the standings. It’s a great test to see where we’re at – it is a great challenge for the guys.”

The Community of Gleichen will be hosting their third Annual Hockey Day in their commu-nity on Feb. 11. It is an opportunity to go out and play one of Canada’s well known sports in a non-competitive environment.

Pond hockey is just like indoor hockey but is generally played outdoors and most of the time on a lake or pond. It has over the years become synonymous with “non-competitive” or fun hockey. Pond hockey in tournaments are played four on four but when playing casually there are no set number of players on a team. There are no goalies in pond hockey, the goals can range anywhere from being regular hockey nets to people’s tennis shoes.

Since pond hockey started the popularity has soared and official pond hockey tournaments are found across the globe. Pond hockey tour-naments have raised the concept of youth pick-up hockey into a serious art form. The rink can

range from any size or shape, and typically re-semble a regular indoor ice hockey rink. Some pond hockey rinks use boards, however in most the surrounding snow makes a good substitute.

Registration is for individual children be-tween the ages of 4 to 17 years old. Both male and female may register and will be on co-ed teams. Registration fees include lunch. Each child registered will be playing a total of three shinny-style hockey games, and some voluntary skills sessions will be offered during the lunch break for those who are interested.

The Gleichen Ag Society has built three out-door rinks and will use the indoor ice surface as well to maximize fun for all the participants. Many volunteer hours have gone into this proj-ect and they hope to have another fabulous turnout this year.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. with the games following at 9 a.m.

Hockey day in GA is coming back for a third year this February. The community of Glei-chen has built three outdoor rinks, and the indoor ice surface will also be used to host all of the kids.

Holy Cross Collegiate in Strathmore hosted a Junior High girls’ bas-ketball tournament this past weekend with teams coming from Tro-chu, St. Joseph’s in Brooks, Beiseker, Carbon, Brooks Jr. High, JT Foster from Nanton, Crowther Memorial and home team the Holy Cross Crusaders. The HCC Crusaders played until the final where they lost 42 to 16. They got into foul trouble early and had to sit out one of their top players. They had started the game slow when Crowther’s team capitalized on every opportunity. The Crusaders de-fense got better as the game went on but the first quarter they were just outplayed. Payge Bratt and Iris Gelenhyes were the MVP play-ers for the Crusdare team from the weekends tournament. Both girls played outstanding games by creating turnovers and capitalizing on them a shooting the ball well.

Two of the four peewee boys teams from Strathmore hosted a successful tourna-ment in Standard over the weekend.

The Strathmore Storm Tier 5 and the Strathmore Storm Tier 6 each hosted two other teams during the fun-filled tournament.

The Tier 5 teams included the Strathmore Storm, Fort Saskatchewan Rangers and the Airdrie Bombers. The Tier 6 teams were the Strath-more Storm, Drumheller Raptors, and the Chester-mere Lakers.

The overall winners in Tier 5 were the Strathmore Storm, second place went to Fort Saskatchewan, and rounding off the tournament in third place were the Aird-rie Bombers.

The Heart and Hustle awards from the Strathmore Storm went to Reese Taubert and Austin MacKenzie, and Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards went to Shilo Petit and Calen Wilson.

In the Tier 6 division the Chestermere Lakers took first place, followed by the Drumheller Raptors, and the Strathmore Storm pulling the third place spot.

The winners of the Heart and Hustle for Tier 6 were Tanner Owel, and MVP went to Tyler Markel.

Just to make note of the different awards handed out, the difference between the two awards is that the coaches chose the Heart and Hustle from their own team, which was the player who “upped their play” for that game.

The MVP is chosen by the opposing coach. They chose the player they thought made the biggest contri-bution for their respective teams.

Karen Corbiell, who orga-nized the tournament, said, “the kids that I talked to said they had fun. We had a great group of parents to help out with the time and score keeping, raffle table, selling of 50/50’s and all the other tasks that go in to making a tournament successful.”

The Wheatland Kings managed to split a pair of road games against some of the top teams in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League this past weekend.

The Kings fell 7-5 to the Red Deer Vipers on Jan. 14, before posting a 5-3 win over the top team in the league, the Okotoks Bisons the following day.

Wheatland opened the trip with a solid two periods, taking a 5-2 edge over the Vipers before allowing five unanswered goals in the third period en route to the loss.

Brandon Newfeld had a goal and an assist, while Ross Fox, Brennan Gras-dahl, Tyler Brandon and Parker Goerg-sen each lit the lamp. Evan Elaschuk chipped in with a pair of assists for the Kings.

Despite the loss, the Kings went to Okotoks the following day and defeat-ed the Bisons 5-3.

Wheatland stormed out to a 4-0 lead before Okotoks made things a little dicey, scoring three unanswered goals. However, the Kings iced the game with a late goal, defeating the Bisons for the second time this season.

Georgsen led the offence, scoring twice and adding an assist, while Gras-dahl provided three assists in the win.

Ty Brinton, Neufeld and Ty Goodea-gle also scored for the Kings, who im-proved to 13-15-1-2 on the season.

The Kings are now preparing for a pair of home games this coming week-end against a couple of divisional ri-vals.

They will host the Medicine Hat Cubs on Jan. 21 (8 p.m.) and the High River Flyers the following day (7:30 p.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.
