The Strathmore and District Cham-ber of Commerce held their annual general meeting March 15 to discuss the previous years activity and up-coming events.

The story The Paper Bag Princess was brought to life at Wheatland El-ementary School March 11.

Students from grades two to six were involved in different aspects of the play in the school’s musicial ad-aptation.

“We are very proud of the students for the efforts they’ve put in,” said Gil-lian Zandee, one of the many teachers involved.

The Paper Bag Princess is a story written by Robert Munsch. It begins when Princess Elizabeth is set to marry Prince Ronald, but her castle

is burned to the ground by a dragon, and all she has left is to wear a paper bag.

The dragon also takes away Ronald, Elizabeth tries to outsmart the dragon and get Ronald back.

Staff and students have been work-ing on the production since before Christmas, but the idea has been there since last year’s pirate production.

“We had a Reader’s Theatre Script so it was a good starting spot to go with and it’s a favorite of everyone’s,” said Michelle Rushford, teacher.

However, the Reader’s Theatre Script was quite short so they decided to adapt songs and include them in the play.

Songs included “You Give Love a Bad Name”, “We are the Champions” and “Dragon’s Ring of Fire”.

“We wanted the music to be really fun and songs they’ve heard before, and we know the parents will recog-nize all these songs,” said Zandee.

Two staff members of Wheatland School played the piano and guitar and were accompanied on the bass and drums by teachers from other schools.

The parent council organized tea and desserts before the play, which were served by students in grades two to four who were dressed up as prin-cesses and princes.

Three workers at the Toddle Inn Day Care have been nominated for the good work they do with children each and every day.

Kelly Bitz, Kerry Wichert and No-ime Candelario have all been nomi-nated for the Alberta Child Care Pro-fessional Awards of Excellence.

“It’s a fabulous place and I thought some of the workers there really de-serve some sort of appreciation even if it’s just being nominated,” said Yvonne Shaw, who is vice-president on the board and has a child who at-tends the day care.

Shaw said she nominated each lady for individual reasons.

Kelly Bitz has been a childcare worker for 29 years and has been with Toddle Inn Day Care since 1990, the last nine years serving as Assistant Director.

Bitz is the primary care giver from the three to four year-olds room. She prepares the programs for the day care and is responsible for administra-tive duties such as scheduling, along with touring new parents and orient-ing new staff, just to name a few.

Shaw said Bitz plays an important role on the parent-run board of Tod-dle Inn.

“She can’t be on the board of direc-tors because she is a worker, but she attends all of our meetings and brings a really good perspective to the par-

ents,” said Shaw. The second person Shaw nominat-

ed was Kerry Wichert, who works in the toddler and baby room.

Wichert has worked in childcare for 20 years and has worked at Toddle Inn since 1990.

Wichert works directly with Shaw’s two-year-old son and said she has seen him improve in numerous ar-eas. She interacts with him on a daily basis, through a stimulating learning environment and positive reinforce-ment.

“I just see such a change in my child just from being in day care. I know she is doing a stellar job,” said Shaw.

Shaw said Wichert also devotes ex-tra time to volunteering in fundraising efforts for the day care.

The third nominee is Nomie Cande-lario who works part-time at Toddle Inn and has been working in child-care for three and a half years.

Shaw said Candelario is very sup-portive, knowledgeable and takes the time to inform parents what goes on with their child throughout the day.

“She has such a great attitude,” said Shaw. “I can only imagine how hard it would be to work with children.”

Shaw said her son comes home so positive and happy and talks about Candelario.

Shaw said the day care is an ‘amaz-ing organization’ and that children are in a learning environment with chil-dren their own age.

“It’s unfortunate that both me and

my husband have to work, but on the bright side our son is getting such superior care and learning so much,” Shaw said. “It’s almost like he is going to pre-school.”

The Alberta Child Care Professional Awards of Excellence honours profes-sionals who demonstrate excellence in their day-to-day work with Alber-ta’s children and families.

Nominees have to create a quality care environment and demonstrate excellence in their innovation and creativity working with children.

There are a number of categories, including: a licensed day care; an approved day home; licensed out-of-school care; care to children with special needs; and care provided to children designed to support lan-guage and cultural practices of chil-dren from Aboriginal or other ethnic communities.

The three ladies from Toddle Inn Day Care were nominated individu-ally in the licensed rural day care cat-egory.

“Unfortunately, only one of them can win,” said Shaw.

All nominees will receive a letter confirming that they’ve been nomi-nated and then there will be a finalist selected. The 10 award winners will be honoured at a ceremony April 30 in Edmonton.

Speed Up Mortgage Payments or Contribute to an RRSP?

In 2010, Canadians plan to pay off their mortgage faster and still contribute more to their RRSPs, according to a poll conducted to Edward Jones in Canada. But should you work toward both these goals simultaneously?Consider the “pros” and “cons” of paying

down your mortgage early. On the “pro”side, you could save a lot of

money in interest payments. Plus, the less you owe on your house, the greater the equity in your pocket could be when you sell it.On the “con” side, by making extra mortgage

payments, you might be shortchanging your RRSP and other retirement accounts - and since you could be retired for two or three decades, you may need this money.Mortgage versus retirement doesn’t have to

be “either-or.” You could, for example, make a greater contribution to your RRSP and use your tax refund to make an extra mortgage payment each year. It’s your choice - so make it a good one. This is Sheetal A Pallana, your Edward

Jones advisor. Edward Jones, Member CIPF.Edward Jones does not provide tax or legal advice. Review your specific situation with your tax advisor and/or legal professional for information regarding, or issues concerning, the tax implications of making a particular investment or taking any other action.

Joy Schmidt and her son Eric got the opportunity of a lifetime during the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, as they got the chance to work with the Ski Cross team.

The chance came about as Joy knew the president of Ski Cross Canada, Cam Bailey, because he is the president of For-tis Energy. Fortis was one of Joy’s clients when she worked for a communications agency in Calgary.

“As a new sport they didn’t have a lot of resources,” said Joy. “I just thought it was something really interesting to get in-volved with in terms of helping with their communications as a volunteer.”

Before the Olympics, Joy helped co-ordinate getting posters and athlete cards made, along with Olympic materials, some media and also things like finding a silver-smith who custom-designed belt buckles for athletes and staff.

Joy and Eric went out to the Olympics for a week to help at Ski Cross House, sell-ing T-shirts, hats and jerseys for families.

“It was certainly an experience. The en-ergy was so high there and very positive,” said Eric. “You expect people to be hectic and obnoxious, but it wasn’t. Everyone was really polite and having fun. Everyone just wanted to be there to enjoy the time.”

Eric had the opportunity to go and watch the men’s ski cross event up at Cy-press Mountain.

He had to wake up at 4 a.m. to catch a bus up to the mountain, and then got to watch the practice events all the way up to the finals when Canadian Chris Del Bosco fell on the last jump trying to get the gold medal.

“That’s when everyone kind of held their breath,” said Eric. “Everyone was cheering because we thought we were going to get a medal and than the crash [happened] and everyone went silent.”

Joy and Eric got to stay at the Ski Cross Staff House, a rented house where the forerunners, alternative athletes and staff stayed. Forerunners were those athletes who tested the course, while alternative athletes were those who could be called

up because of injury. They were able to spend some time

with the athletes including Brady Leman who was able to ski after Dave Duncan went out with an injury.

Davey Barr was another athlete who was staying in the same house as the Schmidts before being called up to re-place Leman. Barr eventually went on to place sixth overall.

The pair also had the opportunity to go to the gold medal celebrations for Ash-leigh McIvor, who won on the women’s side.

“The people trying to get in the door to just even be near her and the medal was indescribable,” said Joy.

Joy said that up until all the events were over for ski cross they were removed from the rest of the Olympics, but they got to enjoy the sights and other events after-wards.

They were able to see the quarterfinals of the men’s United States and Switzerland game, and also spent some time down-town.

“It was really neat to see the Olympic caldron. I would have never thought it was going to be a big deal to me,” said Joy. “It is a pretty humbling experience to stand in front of it and see the flame.”

Eric, a midget hockey player for the Strathmore Storm, was able to meet ath-letes from other countries, such as mem-bers of the Switzerland ski cross team and also an executive from the Finnish men’s hockey team.

“They were easy people to get along with,” said Eric. “It was definitely cool though, knowing that someone could have had a gold medal around their neck.”

They said just enjoying the atmosphere was exciting because the energy was com-pletely positive.

“I think even going to the Olympics is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but going as part of a team you got to experience the emotional stuff, the background stuff,” Joy said.

Joy will continue working with the ski cross team when the 2010 National Cham-pionships happen at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary March 27.

DoG PArkThe Town of Strathmore is currently

looking for a more permanent area to let your furry friends run free.

The town doesn’t currently have an of-ficial off-leash area.

“We are quite serious on this because there are lots of dogs in town. We need an off-leash area,” said Dwight Stanford, CAO. “We have the money in the budget and council wants to get it done.”

In the past, people have taken their dogs to the ball diamonds at Kinsmen Park which were turned into an off-leash area during the winter months.

“It was awkward because there were lots of dog droppings there when the ball groups came in the spring,” said Stanford.

Recently, people have been taking their dogs up to land on the north side of the Ag Society, but Stanford said they have never encouraged that.

For about a year, the town has been looking to build an off-leash area for dogs, and they’ve looked all over town.

“We’ve had a hard time trying to find a location,” said Stanford.

The town finally located three pieces of land they are seriously considering, including some areas owned by the WID.

One area is just south of the Glenwood community, but the town is more seri-ously looking at two different locations at the end of Slater Road heading west.

“We’d like to get it picked and put a chain link fence up first thing in the spring,” said Stanford.

He said he hopes to have everything finished by the end of April, but this de-pends on the frost.

street CleAninGWith spring-like conditions already

here, the gravel on town streets is more prevalent than usual.

Councilor John Rempel brought up, at the council meeting March 17 that resi-dents are concerned about the amount of gravel that is currently on town roads.

“We’ve never done it [street cleaning] this early, but some of the councilors felt we should be getting it done now be-cause it’s been good weather and the dirt is blowing all around off the streets,” said Stanford.

The town used to clean streets at the end of May, then it became early May and is now done at the end of April.

Normally, the town tries to clean resi-dential streets twice a year and down-town and industrial areas more often.

“If we clean it all now and it snows and we have to put sand out again then we are going to have to clean it again in the spring,” said Stanford. “That would mean two cleanings in the spring instead of one that is budgeted for.”

Even so, the town will still look into whether they will clean up the gravel sooner than usual.

BrentwooD PumP uPGrADeAn upgrade to the water pumps at the

Brentwood Station will have an effect on the water pressure residents will see at the taps.

Jesse Parker, engineering and opera-tions for the Town of Strathmore, said the water pressure is not consistent, and the intention is to make the system equal throughout town.

“The current pumps that are in there are not sufficient for the growth the town has experienced over the past few years,” said Parker. “We need to increase the pumps to increase the pressure through town and the distribution system.”

Parker said the pressure decreases dur-ing high demand periods, especially dur-ing the summer on water days, and the

new pumps will eliminate that problem.“With the demand on the system it

tends to drop the pressure on the lines,” said Parker. “These pumps regulate the pressure and the capacity to make it what it needs to be.”

The first pump is scheduled to be in

place by May 11 and the second one to be installed in mid-June. Two more pumps will be installed at a later date.

The one new pump will equal the pres-sure of the two pumps currently used and once the second pump is installed the pressure will increase, said Parker.

“Pet of the Week!”

In home tips for grooming your pet at home:Always brush your pet first, and do it thoroughly. However, try not to make more than 5 strokes in the same area. Brushing is a great way to keep mats from forming as well.

Next eyes, ears, teeth & nails - Check the eyes for any “gunk” that has accumulated in the corners. Gently wipe it away. On the ears use ear cleaning solution (ask your veterinarian to recommend the right kind for your pet) with a cotton ball to wipe away dirt and wax from the inner ear. Be careful not to travel in too deep or clean to fiercely, it may cause damage to your pet’s ear. If the ear seems red, swollen, had a funny smell or any other abnormalities call your veterinarian. For the teeth many pet toothpaste’s are available (use one for pets as others may be poisonous). It is important to clean the teeth and keep plaque to a minimum. If your pet is resistant to the toothbrush idea there are some comparable sprays that can be used instead. Trimming your pets nails frequently is the key to keeping those long nails under control.

Bath time - always use shampoo especially for pets. There are many kinds out there depending on your pets needs (hypo- allergenic, oatmeal, etc.) Shampoo from the neck downward, keeps the shampoo from running in your pet’s eyes. Rinse really well as sham-poo left on the pet can cause irritation to the skin. Towel dry the best you can or if you prefer blow dry on a low setting and keep moving the blow dryer as not to burn the pet.

Dear EditorAs local business owners we have made extensive in-

vestment in our community both financially and emo-tionally. This is where we live, where our children go to school, where we shop, where we pay taxes and prob-ably where we will be buried.

We recognize that The Town of Strathmore has taken steps in these tough economic times to promote growth by inviting new residents and businesses to move into our locale. This would add to the fiscal diversity of Strath-more by inviting their investment in our future. Though (it is) appreciated, more can be done to promote and safeguard the well being of local business in our Town.

The Town of Strathmore can take the lead and set an example for others in the use of local business to supply product, service and repair of Town infrastructure. By doing this you are in effect getting double value for the dollar spent as the money stays in the community longer.

Therefore we respectfully request that Town Adminis-tration and Council review and make necessary changes to the “Award to Bidders Policy” that was last revised by Council on September 19, 1990.

The following points could be used to promote “shop-ping locally,” thereby leveling the playing field for local businesses to compete successfully and simplify the Ten-der process for Town Administration and Council.

1) Set a quote or tender budget for all jobs with a low and high price to qualify or reject bids submitted. This information should be kept confidential for use only by Administration in qualifying each Tender submitted.

2) Prequalify all vendors and contractors that are in-vited to bid.

o Licensed for work in the Town of Strathmore?o Proof of qualification to perform job? Professional

Certificates or affiliationso WCB coverage? Liability insurance? Bonding? o Quality control documentation? Safety program doc-

umentation? o Security clearance for all workers before work is

started? Especially for facilities with children and requir-ing special security measures.

o Willing to hire labour from local area if vendor is not local? This allows at least some money back into the community and helps to raise the employment rate.

o Warranty for service or product delivered?o Proof of environmental awareness? o Proof of performing similar work in scope and cost?

Referenceso Guarantee of delivery bond?3) Invite local businesses to prequalify, if none or not

enough are available, then widen scope to include other municipalities

4) Hold a mandatory site meeting for all prequalified vendors to attend as group to ensure that all get the same information and know who is competing.

o If questions arise during or after the meeting that are not answered in the tender package an ADDENDUM should be sent to each attending vendor.

5) Keep quotes and tenders confidential until close and public opening of Tender

6) Mentor local business. After Tender is awarded in-form unsuccessful local venders why they were not cho-sen, this will serve to educate and mentor their growth for use by the Town in the future. These steps will ensure two things:

1) A fair system for local vendors to be competitive al-lowing Strathmore to become more self sustaining.

2) Simplify the process and ensure that Tax Payers are receiving the best quality work for each dollar spent on a specific project.

Thank you for your consideration.Sincerely,

Charles and Lorinda Weissig, White Corner Professional Cleaning Inc.

Continued from page 1SpringFest is already booked

and the Chamber is looking at different ways to encourage peo-ple to shop local and have some kind of grand prize to be drawn at SpringFest.

“That will bring a few more people to the fair,” said Walker. “We always have a good turnout but hopefully we can do better.”

The Chamber has already se-lected the theme for the Heritage Days Parade, “All Fired Up”, to recognize the 100th Anniversary of the Strathmore Fire Depart-ment.

Another event the chamber is looking at adding is a Fall Trade Show, which fell through last

year, but Walker acknowledges they would have to take on a cor-porate sponsor to make it hap-pen.

Something else the chamber may look at doing is having an awards night to recognize differ-ent businesses for the work they are doing.

However, Walker first wants the new board to sit down with a trained mediator and choose three or four very focused ideas to spend their time on throughout the year.

“At the end of this year we can say this is what we’ve set out to do, this was our mandate and this was our accomplishment,” said Walker. “You can’t accomplish a

whole lot if you constantly bring in new thoughts. I want us to have a focused agenda for 2010 into 2011 and set some goals.”

Walker said they want to bring in some money this year so they can set up an office again so that if people have questions, or need information there are set hours that someone will be there and anyone won’t have to wait for a volunteer to get back to them.

Walker also hopes the chamber can bring educational programs to Strathmore, that members can access to save them from driv-ing to Calgary, and have speakers who are more familiar with rural issues.

Family and friends came out to sup-port the youth singers in Strathmore as choirs competed at the Drumheller Mu-sic Festival held March 19 in Strathmore.

The festival featured three choirs from Brentwood Elementary School, and the Strathmore Children’s Choir.

“I thought they did an awesome job do-ing their best and reaching their poten-tial,” said Carolyn Steeves, choir teacher at Brentwood. “You can tell they were happy about how they did and that’s the most important thing.”

It’s been a long choir tradition for Brentwood School to go the Drumheller

Music Festival, which for the last few years has come to Strathmore because of renovations to the facilities in Drum-heller.

With the festival coming to Strathmore, it allows parents to come watch their children and it is more comfortable for the children.

The Brentwood primary choir is made up of all of the grade 1 students and they practice during class time.

They performed four songs at the festival and earned a distinction rating, which is between 80 to 90 per cent.

The Brentwood junior choir is made up of approximately 60 students in grades 2 and 3 who choose to be in the choir, and they practice once a week out-

side of class time. They also performed four songs and

earned a superior rating, which is be-tween 90 and 100 per cent.

The Brentwood senior choir is made up of approximately 100 students in grades 4 to 6 who also choose to be in the choir. They also earned a superior rating.

“Getting superior ratings today is awe-some,” said Steeves.

The Strathmore Children’s Choir also received a superior rating based on the songs they performed.

Adjudicator Colleen Whidden said she doesn’t normally give out superior rat-ings, but the choirs deserved it.

“I was pleasantly surprised that Strath-

more has such a depth to the music pro-gram,” said Whidden. “There was excel-lent teaching and excellent singing from all the students.”

Whidden said she bases her marks on visual aspects such as how the students enter the room, if they looked focused, are they standing with the proper pos-ture, if they are focused on the director and if they look like they are enjoying themselves.

She said for sound she listens to see what type of sound they are produc-ing, if they are portraying the text of the song, if they are rhythmically accurate and then if overall it is a pleasant musi-cal performance.

A moving art exhibit has come to the Strathmore Mu-nicipal Library. “The Home Show” is a collection of art-work from members of the Alberta Society of Artists and artists at the Nina Haggerty Centre for the Arts.

“We’ve had the exhibit go-ing since I’ve started here in September and we get noth-ing but positive comments from people of how won-derful it is to have artists displaying their work,” said

Jesse Traquair, manager at the Strathmore Library.

The exhibits show the art-ists depictions of home, life in a home and objects that sig-nify home to them, whether it be a single façade, a child-hood home or objects or things that signify a home such as animals, fresh flowers or a comfy chair.

The Art Gallery of Alberta has developed the touring ex-hibition for the Alberta Foun-dation of the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program.

It is currently traveling through the southwest and

central part of Alberta. The Nina Haggerty Center

for the Arts provides a sup-portive, non-competitive en-vironment in which people with developmental disabili-ties can grow and learn with-in their community.

“I like to think the library can be a cultural hub for a community,” said Traquair. “If it’s this nexus where lit-erature and art can meet then that’s a really good thing in my mind.”

Traquair said he thinks it’s fabulous that “The Home Show” exhibit has come to

Strathmore because some of the pieces are quite interest-ing.

He said the idea of the traveling exhibit is to get art into rural parts of Alberta so people can enjoy art without having to go to Edmonton or Calgary.

“People in general have a desire to see art. It’s one of those universal things that ev-eryone likes,” said Traquair. “They may not like a particu-lar medium, but I think that people in general just really like it and I think people like having it brought here.”

It was a busy week at the Strathmore Curling Club as 34 men’s teams took to the ice in the annual bonspiel March 15 to 21.

The modified three-event bonspiel guarantees teams at least three games and is something the club looks for-ward to every year.

“We count on this bonspiel as far as a board and a club goes,” said Darcy Ledene, or-ganizer. “It brings some good

dollars into the club and into the town.”

With 34 teams it makes for a busy week, but is good to see, said Ledene, especially as other clubs have seen numbers dip.

“It’s very busy, but a good, fun, energetic week,” he said.

Finals were played March 21 with approximately 56 prizes being handed out in-cluding barbecue’s, televi-sions, patio sets and power tools.

During the finals, the club had a traditional bag piper

pipe in the teams, just as you would see on the Brier.

“It’s just an added bonus for the teams that make the finals,” said Ledene. “From guys that have played they say it gives them goose bumps just to hear the piper start playing and doing the march out there.”

A banquet was held on March 20, where each team was able to cook their steaks outside on the barbeque.

They also did their $1,000 reserve draw at the banquet.

The Strathmore Storm Bantam Female team who plays in the Midget tier 3 divi-sion came very close to winning the division banner March 19 at the Strathmore Family Centre against the Cranbrook Ice. The team was up 2-0 in the first period before the Ice scored two goals in the first period and two goals in the second period. The Storm added one more goal in the second period, before falling 4-3. “The reason why we did so well was because we had a great team of girls that gave 100 per cent,” said Michelle Lavallee. Lavallee said the coaches and train-ers were also committed to the team even when the trainer came to every game even though her daughter was out with an injury for a good chunk of the season. The Rockyford Colts faced off against Three Hills in search of the division title March 22. The Colts, a Midget Tier 2 team, lost 3-2 in a shootout after being tied at two following regulation and still tied after three overtime periods. Game 2 (shown here) was played in Rockyford March 20 where the Colts won 2-1 to force a third game.

After winning in Olds 77 to 63 March 10, the Lady Spartans played Brooks in Brooks on March 11.

The game started off slow for the Spartans where they fell behind by almost 20 points in the second quarter but managed a small rally before the end of the second only down 13 points.

Strathmore continued with the momentum and by the middle of the forth quarter, had tied the game and taken a two-point lead.

However, in the last three minutes Brooks made all of their shots and beat Strathmore 65-

75. The Spartans worked

hard, but just could not manage baskets when they needed them. Be-cause of the loss, the Spartans matched up with Holy Trinity on March 12.

It was a tough game for the Spartans, not be-cause of their opponent, but because the game was missing some much needed energy. Strath-more took a 20-point lead, but Holy Trinity managed to score 49 points to Strathmore’s 56 points.

With the win, Strath-more would face High River on March 13.

High River was out for revenge after losing the league championship a week earlier.

High River played a spirited game where Strathmore looked tired. By the end of the game, High River beat Strath-more 62-80. After the loss, the Spartans quest for the second provin-cial birth ended.

Despite the disap-pointing loss to end the season, the Spartans can feel proud of their accomplishments this year.

They finished the year with a record of 18 wins and 12 losses and captured the Foothills League Championship.

With eight returning players next year, they look to continue build-ing on the confidence established this year. Congratulations on a great year.

A member of the Strathmore Skat-ing Club did exceptionally well at the recent provincial competition held in Calgary.

Kayla Lochhead, 16, placed sixth in the province out of 102 skaters in the junior bronze level.

Provincials, which were held in Calgary, consist of a two-day compe-tition, with all skaters competing the first day and then the top 16 moving onto the second day.

She said the competition was harder than normal, but that it was a really good experience.

Lochhead had to compete her free skate program, which is two minutes and 35 seconds, and had to include two double salchow and an axel.

“At first, I get really nervous when the music goes on, but then I’m in my element and relaxed,” said Loch-head.

There were girls of all ages com-peting in provincials, from seven to 18.

She had done this same routine previously in five competitions, and said she was always close to the top.

Lochhead had skated competi-

tively two years ago, but then took a break from competitive skating.

“I’m coming near to graduation so I won’t be able skate as much as I do now,” said Lochhead. “I want to do as much as I can now.”

Lochhead said her goal is to move up a level and eventually compete in the junior sliver level.

“I want to strive to get better,” said Lochhead.

Leanne Woodcock, head coach, said it’s not normal for the club to send skaters to provincials and hadn’t sent anyone in quite a few years.

Woodcock said they decided to send Lochhead this year because of her progress and how hard she has been working.

“It’s a big honour for our club and for her,” said Woodcock. “She is such an inspiration to all the other skat-ers and an ambassador for the skat-ing club.”

Woodcock said Lochhead is very dedicated, a hard worker and always shows up and puts in her time.

Lochhead also placed fifth in try-outs for the Alberta Winter Games.

“Having such a great result there, we decided to see what could hap-pen at provincials,” said Woodcock.

The Wheatland AA Chiefs continued their playoff run as they try to win the SCAHL north division title. The Chiefs won the first game 3-2 March 18 against the Red Deer elks before losing in Red Deer 5-0 March 20. A third game was played March 21 in Strathmore, where the Chiefs won, how-ever the game must be replayed because of the accidental use of an ineligible play-er. The final game was replayed March 23, but the score was unavailable at press time. The winner of the division will face Lethbridge, the winner of the Midget AA south division. It was a jam-packed week-end of hockey at the Rocky-ford arena as the Rockyford Ponies Bantam Tier Five team hosted their tournament.

“It was really good be-cause the competition was really close,” said Lynn John-son, tournament organizer and manager of the Ponies. “Pretty much all of the games were tight.”

In the tournament were two teams from Cochrane, two from Lethbridge, and one each from Beiseker, Airdrie and Rockyford.

Johnson said they had two more teams than usual, and that interest came from teams from Seattle and Sas-katchewan.

The Rockyford team start-ed out strong with a win over the Cochrane Red Dogs March 19, but lost in their second game which then sent them to the “C” final.

The team was down four players at this point, two be-cause of injuries in the tour-nament.

“They were really disap-pointed for sure,” said John-son.

The team ended up calling up some players to fill the spots.

Johnson said they want to thank all of those who sup-ported the tournament in-cluding volunteers, parents and coaches.

The Rockyford Ponies had finished the regular season in second place in their tier.

By tanning without your eyewear you increase your risk of cataracts, loss of night vision, loss of distinction between colours and even increase your vision loss. On March 20th, the Strath-more Storm Novice tier 4 hockey team defeated the Banff Bears by a score of 7-5 to win the CAHL League Championship Banner.

This game was attended by a huge number of fans who virtually filled the gold are-na at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Despite the young age of the players (7 and 8 years

old), the calibre of hockey was spectacular, with out-standing demonstrations of both offensive and defensive skills impressing the crowd.

The victory was the perfect way to end a phenomenal season for this novice tier 4 team.

Even more impressive than their unbeaten regular sea-son record of 13-0-1 was the way that these young players worked together as a team.

Anyone who was fortunate enough to watch these kids

in action commented on their sportsmanship, teamwork and enthusiasm.

All five coaches often mar-velled at how “coachable” this group of players were and what a pleasure they were to work with.

Mention must also be made of the worthy opponent, the Banff Bears, from this final playoff series. Despite be-ing playoff rivals, the com-radely and respect between these two teams throughout the regular season, tourna-

ments and playoffs was a shining example of the level of sportsmanship that should always be prevalent when working with minor hockey players.

This was particularly evi-dent when the Banff Bears handed over a very generous donation that they had col-lected from the Banff Minor Hockey families to give to

the Reynolds family of Strath-more who has two young boys in minor hockey.

Congratulations to the Strathmore Storm novice tier 4 hockey players, along with their parents, coaches, and managers.

The championship truly could not have been be-stowed upon a more deserv-ing group.

Despite not accumulating enough wins to qualify for the playoffs, it was a very productive season for the Wheat-land Braves.

While it may not have been the most successful season on the ice in terms of wins and losses, the AA peewee team can use the season as valuable experi-ence.

It was a learning season “not only for the coaches, but for the kids and their parents as well,” said head coach Mike Puttick. “They learned what elite hock-ey is all about and what it takes to play successful hockey.”

According to Puttick, the Braves made improvements from Game 1 to Game 30 of the regular season.

“This is just my opinion, but (the im-provement) was a gradual thing,” said the coach. “Unfortunately, like any hockey season, as you’re getting better, so are the other teams you’re playing against.

“The stretch before Christmas, we were playing real good hockey, actually. The scoreboard didn’t dictate that, but we were getting better. It seemed like the Christmas break really set us back and we were almost back at square one again.”

Puttick added that the most consis-tent part of their season was their goal-tending.

Ryder Quennell and Ben Bogstie pro-vided the Braves with solid play be-tween the pipes.

“Our strongest point was our goal-tending,” said Puttick. “The scores don’t really dictate that – a lot of the games could have been a lot worse had it not been for our goaltending. They were fairly consistent and very good.”
