SHANNON LECLAIR Times Reporter The closing date for the Christmas Hamper Society is fast approaching and Dave Collins, chairperson for the society, thinks the num- bers are going to be close to last year’s. “We’re probably well on target to what we projected, probably about 240, 250 (applica- tions) something like that,” said Collins. “I think we’re going to get the same num- ber of applications and we’re going to get the same generosity from the local people.” Last year the number of hampers filled was 242, a big increase from the 195 needed the year before. Schools, churches and resi- dents throughout the community have gath- ered and donated thousands of items so far and more is always needed. There are hamper bins in a variety of stores around Strathmore, including Tina’s No Frills and Walmart. While things are looking good on the food front, there is al- ways a need for more donations, including monetary. “We always need cash, because obviously we’re going to get lots of grocery bills com- ing in just before Christmas, so what we’re really plunking for now is cash but the food is coming in really good,” said Collins. For example if they need 3,000 cans of soup but they only get 2,000 donated, then they would have to go buy the last 1,000. This is where cash donations are also ex- tremely helpful to the society. For 25 years the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society has been helping those in need to provide a traditional Christ- mas for their families. Collins said it takes approximately a quarter of a million items to fill the hampers, and because of the gener- osity of the town they are well on their way to having the items needed. “Once again Strathmore is very generous,” said Collins. Each hamper can cost hundreds of dollars to fill, depending on the size of the family it is being distributed to. If there are a few kids in one of the families which need a hamper, it can easily cost $400 to fill a hamper for that family. Hampers will be distributed on Dec. 20 and 21. Collins said they will be accepting cheques into the New Year and that cheques can be dropped off to the Society at Box 2156, Strathmore, AB., T1P 1K2. The closing date for the Christmas Hamper Society is fast approaching and Dave Collins, chairperson for the society, thinks the num-bers are going to be close to last year’s.

“We’re probably well on target to what we projected, probably about 240, 250 (applica-tions) something like that,” said Collins.

“I think we’re going to get the same num-ber of applications and we’re going to get the same generosity from the local people.”

Last year the number of hampers filled was 242, a big increase from the 195 needed the year before. Schools, churches and resi-dents throughout the community have gath-ered and donated thousands of items so far and more is always needed.

There are hamper bins in a variety of stores around Strathmore, including Tina’s No Frills and Walmart. While things are looking good on the food front, there is al-ways a need for more donations, including monetary.

“We always need cash, because obviously we’re going to get lots of grocery bills com-ing in just before Christmas, so what we’re really plunking for now is cash but the food is coming in really good,” said Collins.

For example if they need 3,000 cans of soup but they only get 2,000 donated, then they would have to go buy the last 1,000. This is where cash donations are also ex-tremely helpful to the society.

For 25 years the Strathmore and District Christmas Hamper Society has been helping those in need to provide a traditional Christ-mas for their families. Collins said it takes approximately a quarter of a million items to fill the hampers, and because of the gener-osity of the town they are well on their way to having the items needed.

Students at Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy decorated doorways throughout the school to help spread Christmas cheer. Two women from the Golden Hills School Division came to the school on Dec. 10 to pick the best door. They choose the manger mural located in the main hallway on the way to the gym. Sara Renkas, secretary for the school is already thinking next year they may base it on a hymn or a Christmas song and decorate around that. The Green Wolves, Red Coyotes and Blue Huskies each took part in an intramural challenge at Westmount elementary School to gather as many items as they could for the Christmas Hamper Society and to see who would come out on top. Grade 6 students from the leadership program were in charge of coordinating the collections, sorting them and boxing them up. There were over 180 boxes of Kraft Dinner collected. Cans of soup and pasta were the top items brought in. There were 2,925 items collected. The Green Wolves collected 1,114 items, the Coyotes 928 and the Huskies gathered 883. The Strathmore children’s choir put on a performance called ‘All i want for Christmas is…Nuttin’ at the United Church on Dec. 11. The church asked that non-perishable donations be brought in place of charging admis-sion. The pews were filled with par-ents and residents enjoying the per-formance.

Students from Trinity Lutheran Christian Academy brought a little Christmas cheer to the residents of Lambert Village on Dec. 10. The entire school gathered to sing Christmas carols and performing a few sections of their Christmas concert. They brought gifts for all of the residents, and the residents surprised them by giving them juice and cookies at the end of the show.

The students at Standard school had another amazing Christmas Concert this year. Not only was it great to see the stage full of stu-dents shiny faces and dressed up in their finest but, it was also de-lightful and encouraging to see the gym full of siblings, parents, grand-parents and community members to come and see the wonder that is a gift of children singing.

At the beginning of De-cember two local dancers had the opportunity to take part in a production of Alice in Wonderland, held at the University of Calgary. Alberta Dance Theatre for Young People put on its own version of the beloved classic, and Kate Van Kruyssen and Neve Raycroft had a chance to be a part of it.

“It went so great. It was amazing,” said Van Kruyssen, who played the role of the Queen of Hearts.

Van Kruyssen isn’t new to performing with the theatre. “I’ve been with the company for nine years.”

When she was a little girl her parents had seen an ad in the paper about dance being available for children, and she hasn’t stopped since. “Because this is my last year with Alberta Dance Theatre,” said Van Kruyssen. “I was thinking if I stay in Cal-gary for my schooling I

would like to do dance montage that goes on at the U of C theatre.”

The show ran from Dec. 3 to 5, with 53 danc-ers taking part in the per-formance. Of the 53, only one of them was a boy.

This was Raycroft’s first performance with the Alberta Dance Theatre. Raycroft began dancing when she was three-years-old. She is now eight.

“Being in Strathmore she was home at that point (at three-years-old) and it was something that was made available for preschoolers. So we took advantage of it and just to keep busy, she just really took to it and she’s been dancing ever since at the same location here in Strathmore,” said her mom Marnie about Ne-ve’s career start.

When the Raycrofts discovered Alberta Dance Theatre, Neve auditioned and made it.

Each of the girls partic-ipated in 3-4 dances and, depending on the dance, they played different

characters. By the end of the performance each of the 53 dancers had been an Alice, said Marnie.

“When you create a story through dance you know you can be more creative than if you were going to be verbally cre-ative,” said Marnie.

Neve studies all forms of dance and is also a competitive dancer. After the performance she was so exhausted she couldn’t think of what her favou-rite part had been. She found it exciting to be on stage in front of all the people and couldn’t pick just one part of the per-formance that she liked more than any other part.

She portrayed Alice once during the pro-duction; she was also a hedgehog, a house and a variety of other charac-ters.

‘“I don’t ever see her stopping. I think she was born to be on stage and to perform. She just loves it and you just can’t keep them off of the stage and out of the lights,” said Marnie.

Earlier this year, Strathmore gained its first Boys and Girls Club, BGC. Since its inception in the area, the club has been an active member in the community, helping out where they can.

“Part of the leadership program is community service, so this was just one of the projects they’ve been working on,” said Shannon Zieman, chair of the Strathmore BGC.

The BGC did a food drive for the Wheatland Food Bank in the summer. During the Kitz 4 Kidz campaign they washed cars to help raise money and buy school supplies, and currently are collecting coats for the commu-nity coats program.

The Torch leadership group re-cently held a collection drive in their community called ‘Pennies for Pres-ents.’ For three weeks kids in the BGC Torch program, aged 10-13, have

been collecting pennies. “They took coffee cans and they

went around within the community that they live in and collected pen-nies,” said Zieman

“Then we went to Walmart and bought all the stuff.”

They managed to raise $255.25 which they took with them to Walmart on Dec. 8, where they went shopping. The kids had the chance to wander through the toy section and pick out gifts to give to the Christmas Hamper Society.

There is a bin for the Christmas Hamper Society located in Walmart, so as soon as the kids were done having their purchases rung through, they dropped the gifts off into the bin. It’s the donations from the com-munity during the holiday season, which helps keep the society running and helping those in need. The BGC meets once a week at the ReMax of-fice and they are always looking for new members.

HeatHer tHomasExpressions the Dance Gallery

When asked what two words she should use to describe Kate Van Kryussen, Heather Thomas (the Artistic director of Expressions the Dance Gallery (EDG) here in Strathmore) stated “Dedication and Determination.”

On June 18th, 2010, at the Southern Alberta Ju-bilee Auditorium Expressions the Dance Gallery performed their 27th year end showcase. “It was an honor to present EDG’s top award to Kate in front of her family, friends and fellow dancers,” says Heather. Kate had already won dancer of the month for March 2010, and was also recognized for all of her hard work, as dancer of the year!

Kate is presently a grade student 12 at Strath-more High School, and trains between 10 – 12 hours a week at EDG, while maintaining honor roll status in her academic studies. With aspirations of becoming a dentist, Kate’s success stems from set-ting her sites high with clear goals in mind. “I find that dancers who put in many hours a week of training, are the students who do well with multi tasking and time management. They know how to prioritize and get the job done,” says Heather.

“Kate is very talented! Her strong technique and stylization have lead to a kind of performance that is awe inspiring,” says Angela Murdoch senior in-structor at EDG. “Kate defiantly has what it takes to make it in the professional dance world.” Show-ing her true colors this past July, Kate competed at the Great Canadian Dance Challenge’s National Finals. She was awarded a Gold Standing in two out of the three routines that she performed. One of which being her Modern Solo Choreographed by Angela Murdoch. “Modern is definitely one of Kate’s strong suits,” says Angela Murdoch. “You can really feel her love for the art when she im-merses herself in the work, which then makes her an inspiration to dancers of all ages.”

“Here at EDG we have seen many of our stu-dents go onto professional careers. Some moving

into professional theatre, music videos, and even dancers who have made it to the top of So You Think You Can Dance Canada! I really feel that Kate has this level of talent and could pursue a career in dance if she so chooses,” says Heather Thomas. Kate sets a great example to younger students and her peers. She has assisted senior teachers in classes and has recently been asked to teach her own classes at EDG. She is always willing to help in any way possible and share her skills with others.

“Whatever Kate chooses to do with her future we wish her the best, and know that she will be successful in all of her endeavors,” says a beaming Heather Thomas.

Dancer of the Year Extraordinaire….

To the EditorYou have probably seen construction equipment

working in or near Gray Memorial Park and have wondered what is going on. As part of the WID Ca-nal rebuilding the Town of Strathmore is running a line from off street water and seepage into the pond. This is required because the WID doesn’t want street run off to go into the canal. Two fore bays (settling ponds) will receive the water from the run off and let any solid matter settle before the water enters the

pond. In order to complete the necessary excavation and rebuilding many trees and shrubs which had been planted in that area of the park have been re-moved by Town staff, potted and placed in a holding area. These trees and shrubs will be replanted in the spring when construction is completed. Memorial trees will be replanted in the park in a designated area as well.

To the EditorI live in Seniors apartments in Strathmore. Last

Tuesday morning I was taking my garbage out to the dumpster and the garbage truck was (already) there for pickup. I was only half way there, when a young man jumped out of the passenger side, walked up to me and offered to take my garbage. What a kind and thoughtful person he was. I just

want to thank him. It’s not the big things that count in life, it’s the

little things that happens, that you appreciate. So please take the time to say thank you to all the little things that happen in your day. Once again I want to say thank you to that young man for caring.

The Alberta Lung Association has a BLAST pro-gram which is designed to challenge youth to rethink the temptation to starting smoking. BLAST stands for Building Leadership for Action in Schools Today. The program is aimed at students from Grades 7 to 9.

The Grade 9 health class at Standard school took part in the campaign and entered the contest hosted by BLAST.

“The students in the Grade 9 class here went out and took pictures,” said teacher Tiffany Phillips.

“So we found the areas that had cigarette butts on the ground or cigarette packages and we took pictures.”

The photo contest ran from Sept. 15 to Oct. 30, and entries from all over the province were submit-ted. The contest is designed to help raise awareness in Alberta about the negative effects of tobacco use, and BLAST feels that students creating things to

counter the market trying to get people to smoke, may help them take on a meaningful role as an ad-vocate for change.

“We signed up and put our entries in. We put in five entries and it was out of 150 entries and one of ours won,” said Phillips.

The students had seven categories to choose from, with the main focus being to critique smoking in-stead of making it look glamorous.

The winning photo, submitted by Phillip’s stu-dents, was a little cigarette butt on the ground. It said ‘it may take up to 15 years for one cigarette butt to decompose.’

This year marked the first ever photo contest put on by the Lung Association. Because tobacco prod-ucts are illegal for minors, all of the photos were to be taken using staged materials.

The class got $500 to spend on an activity, and the school received a grant for $5,000. The grant is to promote healthy lifestyles and promote anti-smoking in our youth.

The Wake-a-thon was supposed to take place on Dec. 3 but they had to make it a mini version of what was originally antici-pated. This was due to the fact that SAAD organizer and teach-er Amy Dzus only had 23 forms returned to her. The event was to take place from midnight until 5 a.m. “it is kind of sad and i know that a lot of students were sad but you know there is deadlines on the forms and unfortunately this year not enough kids handed in their forms by the deadline,” said Dzus. “i de-cided that the kids that did hand in a form, they shouldn’t be

punished.” So instead of completely cancelling Dzus decided to have a mini wake-a-thon. There was still pizza and ice cream cake, video games and boards games and movies. “it’s our fundraiser for the year, the kids that did hand in their forms and their donations brought in about $650. it’s not bad, it’s not the $3,000 that we raised last year but it’s better than nothing,” said Dzus.

Every year the Strathmore and Dis-trict Playschool picks a local charity or organization to support. This year they chose the Healthy Families of Strath-more and Wheatland County program. The Playschool, which is located behind Westmount school, saw families collect-ing an assortment of items to donate.

“There were things like a Little Leaps Learning System, board games, Magna Doodles, stickers, colouring books, dolls and walkie talkies,” said Krista Perry, a home visitor with Healthy Families.

There were also toques, scarves and mitts nestled amongst the toys.

Healthy Families is a non-profit orga-nization with trained home visitors who

offer their time to visit homes, provid-ing assistance and support to those in need. They help parents formulate par-enting strategies, information and ideas to stimulate child development and pro-vide community support, resources and referrals.

“We work primarily with children be-tween the ages of 0 to 6-years-old,” said Perry.

The main goal of the organization is to help parents conquer some of the difficulties of parenting and learn to be the parent they want to be. Healthy Families is dependant on community support.

“We thank all of the Playschool fami-lies who showed their generosity, love of the community and Christmas spirit by giving to our program,” said Perry.

Stakeholders and interested par-ties for the Bow River Basin Council, BRBC, met at the Travelodge on Dec. 8 to discuss what has been happen-ing in the last quarter. The council has been around for more than 20 years in one form or another, and is supported by the government.

“All of the stakeholders involved with the Bow River formed an orga-nization supported by government to be…a talking shop where we all actu-ally talk to each other, we all have dif-ferent interests in the river

It is an opportunity to put everyone in the same room and talk about their problems and how one interacts with the other,” said Jim Webber current W.I.D general manager.

There were about 60 people in at-tendance at the meeting, which is normally held in downtown Calgary. Webber said they have been cam-paigning to have the meetings in the Strathmore area, allowing more peo-ple an opportunity to make it. He said people have a chanceto interact at the meetings, exchange information and meet new people also involved with the council.

“It’s a great educational tool,” said Webber.

The W.I.D put on a power point presentation about some of the tech-

nology involved in irrigation districts. “I don’t think people realize just

how much technology goes into the water movement these days,” said Webber.

“So it’s a great way to educate them on how far we’ve come and how much water we conserve these days.”

The BRBC covers a huge territory, from Banff down to Medicine Hat, which means that either way, some-one is going to have to travel

“I’ve always said that the Bow River Council’s greatest advantage is…that if there is a good idea and the folks that are the stakeholders are hearing it, changes may happen tomorrow. Because we all have the ability to go back to our day jobs and change things,” said Webber.

The next quarterly meeting for the council will be taking place in March, and will be in Calgary.

The Holiday season can be a tough time of year for many people. For one woman and her son it became just a little tough-er. On Nov. 30, an electrical fire ripped through Laverne Diegel’s home, just off of Highway 1 and Range Rd. 263.

“We were lucky we didn’t quite lose everything but it’s still quite devastating,” said Diegel, who lived in the home with her youngest son.

She lost all of her clothes to the fire, but still managed to joke about how most women have stuff in their closets they don’t really wear. She said it wasn’t a total loss, but she was upset about some of the new things she had just bought.

“To me, it’s better losing some clothes than a life,” said Diegel.

She and her son had just gotten home within a few minutes of each other, and had decided to go eat at the Oriental Gar-dens in Strathmore. They left just before 4:30, had dinner and lingered over a pot of tea. She said they were back at the house in about 45 minutes.

Her son tried going upstairs, but couldn’t because it was getting hot. He could see the flames starting, so she told him they had to get out. Diegel said they had no idea if it was going to blow from the gas. They know they didn’t leave any-thing on the stove because they were only home for five minutes.

“We didn’t smell anything, and that was the funny part of it,” said Diegel.

The fire department came, and EMS checked them out because they both had smoke inhalation. It took a few days for the fire department to deem it safe, and

then they were allowed to go back and see what was salvageable. The fire began in her bedroom and she was told it was from her lamp, which was plugged in be-hind her bed.

“My furniture is okay, it has to be cleaned I guess. I never realized the amount of soot from a fire because you just see the smoke going up and billow-ing out and you wouldn’t think….just so much devastation, so much,” said Diegel.

Somebody had given them a trailer and they were just going to stay out there with the animals but she said the landlord ve-toed that due to a lack of proper insur-ance for people staying outside. It was a disappointment to Diegel and her son be-cause they had enjoyed being there.

“We found another acreage, it’s just off of 84 St. and 14 Ave., so we really lucked out. Well eventually we lucked out.”

One thing that never entered her mind during the fire was running in to rescue any of her things. She was more con-cerned about their safety then she was about material items.

It wasn’t until she was sifting through the salvageable items that she realized what was lost.

“I looked on the bright side, I mean we didn’t lose everything,” said Diegel.

She said friends and neighbours came together to help them out, and her sons who work for the City of Calgary and their particular office gathered together $700 for her and her youngest son. She used the money to get her bedroom set so she once again has a bed to sleep on. Despite having a rough time, Diegel seemed to be in good spirits and is looking toward the future while salvaging what she can from the past.

‘We’re lucky we didn’t quite lose everything’

Christine Foshaug (l), Tavish Foshaug and Krista Perry show off the items collected by the Strathmore and District Playschool, which were donated to the Healthy Families program.

The song “Winter Wonderland” has become a staple of holiday radio. Much like “Jingle Bells,” “Winter Wonderland” was not intentionally written to become a Christmas carol, but evolved into one over time.

The song was published in 1934 by composer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard B. Smith. Smith resided in the town of Honesdale, Pennsylvania, and was inspired to write the lyrics of the song after seeing Honesdale Cen-tral Park and his own childhood home blanketed in snow. Smith actually wrote the lyrics while being treated in the West Mountain Sanitarium in Scranton, Pennsylvania, for tuberculosis.

Many singers have performed the song throughout the years, so much so that it is often a standard song on art-ists’ holiday compilations. Some of the better-known and earlier versions were made by The Andrews Sisters and Per-ry Como.

“Winter Wonderland” has evolved into one of those songs that inspires visions of snowy splendor. Original lyr-ics feature a portion of the song men-tioning young lovers being married spontaneously by a traveling “parson,” a Protestant minister. Some thought those lyrics sent the wrong message to children, and another version was writ-ten with a circus clown, instead. The song has been sung with either bridge in place and even both in lengthier ver-sions of the tune.

For those who want to enjoy their own winter wonderland and sing along with this classic winter carol, here are the lyrics.

“Winter Wonderland”Sleigh bells ring, are you listening,In the lane, snow is glisteningA beautiful sight,We’re happy tonight,Walking in a winter wonderland.

Gone away is the bluebird,Here to stay is a new bird.He sings a love song,As we go along,Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,Then pretend that he is Parson BrownHe’ll say, “Are you married?”We’ll say, “No man,”But you can do the jobWhile you’re in town.Later on, we’ll conspire,As we dream by the fire,

To face unafraid,The plans that we’ve made,Walking in a winter wonderland.

In the meadow we can build a snowman,And pretend that he’s a circus clownWe’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman,Until the other kiddies knock him down. When it snows, ain’t it thrilling,Though your nose gets a-chilling.We’ll frolic and play, the Eskimo way,Walking in a winter wonderland

People have firm beliefs on what’s better for the holidays: a natural tree from the nearby tree farm or an artifi-cial tree purchased at the store. Propo-nents for both side haves their share of opinions regarding which is more envi-ronmentally friendly or fiscally respon-sible. Christmas celebrants who want to veer away from the argument com-pletely can select a live tree (with roots intact) for their tree of choice this year.

Christmas trees that can be planted afterward are easily found at lawn and garden retailers or from the very same tree farms from which trees can be hewn. Chances are the tree is already packaged in a large pot, to make trans-port a little easier. A homeowner who is considering a live tree will have to decide where the tree will be planted afterward and plan for that location as

soon as possible. That’s because it can be particularly difficult to dig a large hole in which to plant a tree when the ground is thoroughly frozen. Laying the groundwork for the hole in advance will make post-Christmas planting pos-sible.

Tree experts say that a live tree should not exceed 5 feet in height. Larger, more mature trees can have dif-ficulty acclimating to transplanting and may go into shock. Try to keep the tree outdoors as much as possible and only have it indoors to decorate for a maxi-mum of 2 weeks, otherwise the warm, indoor temperatures may mimic spring and bring the tree out of dormancy. When getting ready to transplant the tree outside, transition it back to the cold by keeping it in the garage for a few days before moving outside.

Dear Santa,

How are you doing? I have been very good this year except for this past week on the play ground. But I have worked really hard at being a great big brother to Emmitt and Tate. This Christ-mas I would like some more Kinex, a DSi, and a snowboard or a snowmobile. I hope you bring my brothers what they would like. Have a safe trip.

Yours truly,

Bailey Filkohazy, Age 10

Dear Santa,

Hi my name is Ryley. I am nine years old. I would like lego for Christmas, and lego videogames. I would also like a Playstation 3 for my brother and me. I have been really good this year we even got a new dog. I help with the dog and take the dog outside. I help empty the dishwasher and set the table. I wish everyone would get along and there would be no more wars.

Yours truly,

RyleyBlakney, Age 9

Dear Santa,

I hope you are doing well. How is the toy building going? I will be setting out cook-ies for you with milk. I hope you have a good Christmas at the North Pole. I have been a really good boy being nice to my big brother and my little brother. A piano and a Bum-blebee Transformer are what I would really like this Christmas. Thank you Santa.

While Rudolph might be the most fa-mous reindeer, there remains no docu-mented evidence of a red-nosed reindeer guiding Santa’s sleigh on an especially stormy Christmas Eve. But just because no one has yet to find the real Rudolph, that doesn’t mean we don’t know a few things about Santa’s sled buddies.

* Reindeer are also known as Caribou in North America.

* Females generally weigh between 170 to 260 lbs., while males are often much larger, weighing as little as 200 lbs. but as much as 460 lbs.

* Reindeer reside in both the Arctic and Subarctic, and hunting of wild reindeer and herding of semi-domesticated rein-deer is important to several Arctic and

Subarctic people.* Reindeer fur can vary considerably.

In northern populations, reindeer tend to have white fur, while southern popula-tions are darker in color.

* Reindeer size can also vary depend-ing on location, as southern reindeer populations tend to be larger than their northern counterparts.

* In most reindeer populations, both males and females grow antlers. Among deer, reindeer have the largest antlers in relation to body size.

* Males often battle with each other by locking antlers for the right to mate with certain females.

* During migration, some reindeer reach speeds of 37 to 50 miles per hour.

Reindeer Not All Red-Nosed Rudolphs

Come Christ-mastime, children all around the world await the arrival of Santa Claus. Although many of his abili-ties are the result of folklore, there actually was a Santa Claus, or St. Nicholas. The real St. Nicholas lived in Turkey. He was a bishop in the town of Myra during the fourth century. According to Dutch legend, Sinter Klaas, or St. Nicholas, brought

gifts at Christmas, either through an open window or down a chimney. This legend is the basis of the Santa Claus we know and love today. St. Nicholas takes

on many personas depending on the country in which his tale is being told. For most, he is a plump and jolly man with a pen-chant for cookies and milk.

The Real Santa Claus

With a Bundle of Gratitude

And A Load Of Best Wishes At The Holidays!

The holiday season has arrived. Cel-ebrations and gifts will be at the forefront of the festivities. Once all of the gifts are torn open, there are bound to be mounds of wrapping paper in each and every home, which can mean damaging waste for the environment.

Wrapping paper, boxes and ribbons tossed straight into the garbage can mean that pounds of added trash will end up in landfills across the country. There are smarter solutions to dealing with holiday clean-up.

The first step is choosing environmen-tally responsible wrapping materials. Glossy, metallic or embellished wrap-ping paper may not be easily recycled -- or even recyclable at all. Instead, look for wrapping paper that is made from recycled materials and can, in turn, be recycled once more. Consider wrapping gifts in plain, brown mailing paper and decorate the outside with earth-friendly paints.

Next, nix the tissue paper inside of gift boxes. It doesn’t really serve a functional purpose, except for further delaying the reveal of the gift inside. Tissue paper alone accounts for a lot of extra trash. Skipping it means a person will be sav-ing money and the environment. Here

are some other green cleanup tips.* Designate a child or adult to gather

the discarded wrapping materials and sort the piles into trash. Ribbons and bows can be reused, as can many gift boxes and bags.

* Shred paper items that are bound for the trash to reduce their volume and re-quire fewer trash bags for transport.

* Find out if a shipping store will take foam peanuts and air-filled wraps to be recycled.

* Be sure to collect expired batteries and recycle them at a facility that does so.

* Christmas trees can be taken down and sent for mulching. Many communi-ties collect trees after the season is over for this purpose.

Because there is bound to be some extra garbage during the holidays, indi-viduals can take steps to curb trash in other aspects of their lives this time of the year. Some ideas include using cloth napkins and actual dishes and cutlery instead of disposable items. Before pur-chasing new gift paper, sort through last year’s collection to see what items can be reused. Cutting the front off of holiday cards and using them as gift tags is an-other way to recycle.

There’s a good reason fitness club memberships tend to spike come January. After a holiday season spent party-hop-ping and letting their diets fall by the wayside, many people look to the gym as the means to helping shed those inevitable holiday pounds.

Perhaps no food is more popular around the holidays than cookies. Cookies are as much a part of the holiday season as Christmas trees, long lines at the mall and kids searching the house for presents.

For one early morning, the UFA Bisons made a huge trade, exchanging their pucks and sticks for wrapping paper and presents – all for a good cause.

The local triple-A midget team held their 10th Annual Christmas Shopping with the Bisons Dec. 12 at Strathmore’s Calgary Co-op.

The players helped children of single-parent homes select gifts for their loved ones and assisted in wrapping the pres-ents.

“We do this for two rea-sons – one, to give back to the community, and two, for these players that do move on to ju-nior hockey, they are going to be expected to do stuff (like this),” said UFA Bisons Gener-al Manager Neil Glionna. “This shows them (and) gives them the heads up.

“That’s why we hear back from junior teams that they appreciate our program be-cause we do help get their players ready for everything – not just the on-ice, but the off-ice as well. The two go hand in hand. They’re both impor-tant.”

Bisons head coach Parry Shockey agreed with Glionna.

“I think that hockey players have gifts, they have an op-portunity to do a lot of things and to be exposed to a lot of different variables in life,” said Shockey. “Most of them are about success and about their goals. I think that (these) sort of things bring everything

back to reality … it’s always good to give back.

“To see the looks on the kids’ faces is unbelievable. It brings the true meaning of Christmas to us.”

According to Glionna, the event evolved from a brain-storming session over 10 years ago, when the (then) coaching staff and management team were looking for ways to give back to the community.

Initially, the thought was to go to various businesses to help make the event. Howev-er, when the team approached Strathmore’s Calgary Co-op, the local store stepped up and hosted the entire event.

“We just want to be involved in our communities and make sure that the events that we do get tied in with are things that people can relate to and be beneficial to the com-munities we serve,” said Jay Phypers, Centre Manager for Strathmore’s Calgary Co-op. “This is a program that they have been running for years – long before I got here … it seemed like a really good fit and I’m just overjoyed with the way it went.”

While all the players are elite midget level competitors, Glionna had to question some of the team’s wrapping abili-ties.

“We might have to have a practice on wrapping,” laughed Glionna. “They all had a good time, but there were some interesting wrap-ping jobs.

“I always try to find stuff that was in a rectangular or square box.”

The UFA Bisons held their 10th Annual Christmas Shopping with the Bisons Dec. 12 at Strathmore’s Calgary Co-op. Despite the early morning shop-ping spree, the children and players were excited for find the right presents, before wrapping them. Mario Prusina Photos

The Gleichen Pond Hockey program is now well into its second year and registration has gone up from last year. In 2009 there were 13 kids, rang-ing from ages 4 to 17 in the program and this year to date they have 42 kids taking part.

“There were always kids that wanted to play, just never enough to field a team,” said Cara Shep-pard, coordinator of the program.

“I’ve known about this pond hockey for a num-ber of years and I thought ‘darn it you know what we’ll do pond hockey and that way we don’t have to worry about actual teams, we just have players.”

There are dividers put onto the ice, and for the first 45 minutes the kids are learning the skill of the game. For the rest of the time they divide up into teams and play shin-ny-style hockey.

“We don’t play any-where else except for here, unless we want to hook up with other pond hockey programs,” said Sheppard.

Pond Hockey is no con-tact at any age; the games are more of a shinny-style and the kids all have to wear full equipment. There are no referees, but there are parental super-visors who have all been screened by the RCMP and there is no travel un-less the parents decide to.

“Kids can come either night, or both nights if they want,” said Shep-pard.

Pond Hockey in Glei-chen began at the begin-ning of November and will go until March. There is no deadline for regis-tration.

“We have a drop-in fea-

ture that you can do so you don’t have to pay the full amount or you can pay the full amount you want, or you can do the drop in if you’re not sure that it’s something you want to do if you don’t have the time its just kind of come and go if you want to,” said Sheppard.

The term ‘Pond Hock-ey’ usually leads one to believe the game will be played on a frozen pond somewhere, but in Glei-chen it takes place at the newly renovated Glei-chen arena.

“It’s called pond hock-ey but only because it’s getting back to the grass-roots of the fun of play-ing hockey and that kind of thing,” said Sheppard.

Sheppard is also the provincial pond hockey committee member for Hockey Alberta and she said there are pond hock-ey programs all over Al-berta.

Last year Gleichen had hockey day in GA (Gleichen Arena), on the same day as Hockey Day in Canada. This year it will be taking place on February 12, and main-stream hockey players, pond hockey players or kids that may just want to come out to try it are invited to take part.

“Hockey Alberta has offered what they call a ‘Bring a Friend’ pro-gram.,” said Sheppard. “They cover off the insur-ance for that kid for the day and then we can get other kids out there play-ing if they want to do that,”

It will cost $5 per kid, and they will get to play in three games and have lunch.

Anyone who would like more information can call Cara Sheppard at 403-734-3515, or email her at [email protected].

Sam Johnson has no problems put-ting the puck in the net.

The UFA Bisons power forward vault-ed himself into the mix for the league’s goal scoring title after an explosive five-goal weekend.

Johnson scored four goals in the Bi-sons 5-2 win over the Gregg Distribu-tors on Dec. 11, before notching anoth-er one in the team’s 5-1 win over the K of C Pats the following day.

“If you want a poster child for a pow-er forward that goes to the net (he’s your guy),” said Bisons head coach Par-ry Shockey. “That’s where he scores his goals – he’s going to the net, he’s crash-ing the net. He’s not scoring the pretty one-timers on the back doors and stuff like that.

“He’s scoring in the dirty area – you love those guys that love to play in the dirty areas and he’s one of those guys, and he got rewarded.

“Hopefully the other guys see that and they’re willing to get their noses dirty too.”

Much like his coach, Johnson doesn’t care how the puck goes in.

“I mean, they all look the same on the score sheet, right?” smiled Johnson after the pair of home games. “I just crash the net and the pucks (seem to) go in – the bounces are going my way.

“My line-mates (Luke Philp and Tor-rin White) are great hockey players – both of them are so fast and smart out there. They have a great skill set … it’s so fun out there.”

It was a busy weekend for the Bisons, who hosted a practice in Rockyford for the village’s minor hockey teams on Friday night. After the win on Saturday, the team stayed at a hotel in Strathmore in order to take part in the 10th Annual

‘Christmas Shopping with the Bisons’ early Sunday morning.

The team then played a solid game en route to the win over the Pats.

“We have to give K of C a lot of credit – they’ve really improved from the start of the year,” said Shockey. “They stifled us there for a while … but we stayed with the game plan, we moved the puck well and got a good contribution from a lot of players.

“We dominated a lot of areas and their goaltender was making the saves, but this is one of those games that you have to go out and win.

“They’re not going to give it to you.”In Saturday’s game, the Bisons fell be-

hind 2-0 before storming back for five unanswered goals.

“I thought we played really well too,” said the coach in regards to Saturday’s game. “Guys moved the puck, guys crashed the net.

“We have a game plan, and when we play it, we’re pretty impressive to watch. We give (our) guys the green light to be creative. We don’t try and take that away from them.”

The Russian aRe coming! In preparation for the Mac’s Midget

Hockey Tournament, the UFA Bisons will be hosting a pair of exhibition games versus Russia HC Severstal. The teams will tangle in High River Dec. 21 (6:30 p.m.) before playing at the Strath-more Family Centre on Dec. 23 (also at 6:30 p.m.). Fans are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item or toy in support of the food bank.

The Bisons, in conjunction with the Strathmore Times, will offer everyone in attendance a chance to have their pic-ture taken with Santa for just $10 dur-ing the first intermission. All proceeds from the photographs will go towards the Ron Ebbesson Scholarship Fund.

TaMi LeMoineStrathmore Electric Ice

Things are winding down for the Elec-tric Ice with only one game played last weekend. Strathmore played host to the Calgary Revolution. The Ice had not been able to defeat this team in their previous two games, however they were more than ready for the challenge.

Strathmore came out fast and complete-ly dominated the play for the entire first period. The team that had pushed them around only two weeks ago was com-pletely overwhelmed by the Ice’s inten-sity, speed and agility. Calgary did start the second period with a quick power play goal, but Strathmore was not will-ing to let them change the way they play

ringette. The final score was 6-3 for the Electric

Ice with goals scored by Taylor Shpyth (3), Shae Lane, Katie Edelmann and Gabi LeMoine. It was one of the most satisfy-ing wins of the season for this group of incredible, fun loving, and enthusiastic group of players.

It has been a pleasure to watch this team develop and grow over the past few months. A huge thank you must go to the Electric Ice coaching team - Rhonda Ol-son, Jacki Weir and Lana Lane - who give so much of themselves to our girls so that they can experience success both on and off the ice.

The Electric Ice plays next on Thursday night in Calgary and Saturday morning in Cochrane.

Despite a pair of valiant performanc-es this past weekend, the Strathmore Rockies are still looking for their first win of the season.

The local Western Women’s Hockey League team was defeated 2-1 by the Edmonton Chimos on Dec. 10 in Pono-ka, before falling 5-3 at the Strathmore Family Centre on Dec. 12.

While most teams are well into their season, these were just the second and third games of the season for the Rock-ies, after falling 2-1 to Edmonton in a shootout Oct. 30.

We’ve been practicing for three months and we’ve only had three games,” said coach Tom Molloy. “It’s

hard to keep the interest up in practice if you’re never playing games. It’s al-most like ‘what are you practicing for?’

“It’s kind of lucky with our injuries that we have so many games after Christmas, because hopefully they’ll all be back.”

While the team has filled their game appetite with exhibition games versus minor triple-A midget teams in the area, the team was anxious to play meaning-ful games this past weekend.

The Rockies came out flying Friday night and outshot the Chimos 15-4 in the first period, but trailed 2-0 after 20 minutes. Strathmore went on to out-shoot Edmonton 36-33, but couldn’t muster more than the one goal Melissa Welton scored 3:23 into the third pe-riod.

“We just didn’t score,” said Malloy of the first weekend game. “I thought we deserved a better fate.”

On Sunday, Kelsey Webster scored twice, while Tonya Faasse scored once to pace the Rockies offence. Welton added a pair of assists.

“We started slow in the first 10 min-utes or so and got down 2-0,” explained team captain Kaley Herman of the 5-3 loss. “We had to fight back the whole time. I think we played well, we just couldn’t bury our chances. We got into penalty trouble there and (then) gave up a shorthanded goal, so we were playing catch-up the whole game.”

Despite battling some injuries now, Herman is optimistic for the calendar to flip to 2011. Once they have a full lineup, they are a different team.

“I feel like our strength is skating and moving the puck – seeing each other out there and moving the puck nicely,” said Herman. “When we do that, we get tons of chances to bury it.”

The Rockies are back in action Jan. 21 (8 p.m.) and Jan. 22 (5:30 p.m.) when they host the Minnesota Whitecaps at the Strathmore Family Centre.GivinG back to the community

Members of the Strathmore Rock-ies Women’s Hockey Team are going to share their time, hockey knowledge and a little Christmas spirit with the Town of Strathmore. The Rockies will run a practice at the Strathmore Family Centre with the peewee girls’ hockey team on Dec. 21, at 6:45 p.m.

The Rockies are role models for

youth, specifically young girls in the community who aspire to play hockey at an elite level. The Rockies run a pro-gram called EnCana Hockey Rocks all season long for any team that would like to have the Rockies at their prac-tice.

“It’s really fun for the Rockies to skate with and teach the younger play-ers,” said Samantha Holmes-Domagala, President of the Rockies. “We were all that age once and we know how valu-able it is to have older players to look up to. For that reason, and to give back to the Strathmore Community, we run EnCana Hockey Rocks.”

The team will also host a practice for the bantam girls on Dec. 19 (10:30 a.m.) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

southwell, Mora1923 - 2010

Mora passed away peacefully on December 9, 2010 at Strathmore

Hospital. She will be lovingly remembered by her three sons, Howard (Frances), Ralf (Elinor), and Colin (Nutjira); her seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and many friends. Mora and her late husband, George, came to Canada in 1997 from Scotland to be close to her family and moved to Strathmore in 1999. Her pastimes included embroidery, baking and reading, and she enjoyed the friendliness of the Strathmore community. Mora had a kind heart that will be truly cherished and missed. Many thanks to those who offered care and support over the years. To send condolences, please visit www.wheatlandfuneralhome.ca. WHEATLAND FUNERAL HOME LTD. Mel BoscheeStrathmore Novice Ringette

The two Strathmore Ice Novice teams squared off at the Strathmore Leisure Centre on Dec. 12. The Ice Divas were the Home team and ready to roll. The Ice Creams showed up at the arena ready to enhance and show off their new moves. In the words of Coach Lana: “I look forward to seeing if the girls can implement more of the plays we have been working on in practice.”

The Ice Creams took this game home. And Implement the plays Coach Lana

refers to; boy did they ever. They did the “Ice Cream” play, they did the “trap”, they did a couple other moves the par-ents don’t even know the name for and none of our girls will tell us. They were passing queens and their team work again showed up for the whole game. The Ice Creams didn’t run out of steam today which has everything to do with our coaching staff; Coach Lana, Coach Vince, Coach Guy.

Ice Cream goals were scored by Ai-nsley Olson, Daylen Wathen, Abby Hilton, Emily Bailie, Cayley Boschee, Shelby Lane, Jaidyn Eitzen, Payton Jen-sen, Brooklyn Reinhart. Remember no one scores a goal alone, and our scor-ers would not have been able to per-form without the help of the passing queens Meghan Munchrath, McKenna Blades and Abbey Bratt; not to mention our ‘StoneWall”; Jaden Tashlikowich our netminder which left the Ice Divas short on goals. Ice Diva goals were scored by Elizabeth Proust, Grace Olson, Jewlyn Foat and their super team mates Cam-ryn Hinz, Alyssa Gillis, Olivia Wilson, Justine Larson, Mackenzie Hansen, Cos-sette Lacroix, Grace Praeker, Regan Bo-gusky, Aubrie Hunter.

You are all amazing stars and we are all proud of you … keep the rings mov-ing girls. Next Week the Ice Creams are playing in Strathmore at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday – come watch the fun!
