We do not currently have two days of stor- age in town for potable water,” said Jesse Parker, director of engineering and operations for the town. “We have the waterline from Calgary. The wa- terline does provide at a great volume, and a good rate for supply. There were nine tenders submitted for the project, and town staff and EPCOR staff re- viewed them. ‘Where is the money coming from’ was the big question council had during the Sept. 7 council meeting when talk of a new $10 million reser-voir project in the Wildflower Ranch area came up.

This is the second year in a row administration has requested tenders in regards to this project, which will see the town’s potable water storage increase to approximately four days in case of an emergency.

“Currently with our… storage that we have in town, that does not represent two days of stor-age. We do not currently have two days of stor-age in town for potable water,” said Jesse Parker, director of engineering and operations for the town.

“We have the waterline from Calgary. The wa-terline does provide at a great volume, and a good rate for supply. In terms of storage in the event of any kind of break or damage to the line, the town currently only has less than two days of storage, which gives us a very short time to respond and correct the problem with the line.”

He said it is no different than when the town relied on the water treatment plant and could only produce water at a certain volume, but the idea is to get to more than the average at four days of storage.

There were nine tenders submitted for the project, and town staff and EPCOR staff re-viewed them.

As a part of the review, tenders were required to achieve a score of 75 per cent on experience, their management plan and other pertinent items. Only three tenders received 75 per cent or higher, one of which is Associated Engineer-ing, who scored 83 per cent.

Parker said he and staff are confident the re-view resulted in a well-qualified candidate. Be-cause it’s an underground system the need to find a company with a good reputation and previous experience with a project of this scope was imperative, which is why the review panel process was used.

The cost projected by Associated is for $898,158 that is for the design element, project management and post construction. The total scope of the entire project, including construc-tion, has the town scrambling to find approxi-mately $10 million.

“We’re committing financial suicide here. (It’s like) jumping off the cliff and then putting the parachute on, it’s wrong,” said Mayor Steve Gra-jczyk.

Thanks to a generous donation from a local developer and businessman, the Strathmore Fire Department, SFD, is now equipped as one of the top water search and recovery teams in the area.

Ken Struss, who is with Cancorp and an owner of the Wildflower Ranch de-velopment, spent some time on the boat with SFD members recently and saw a way he could help them.

“What I said was, I would donate $10,000 and use it for equipment for the fire hall,” said Struss.

“They had a couple of emergencies lately and they were lacking some equipment, so I inquired about what some of the equipment was. It’s a sonar system and a radio system because the boat is so loud you can’t communicate.”

There were 10 calls last year to SFD for a water rescue and/or recovery, and members of the department say they are already over 10 this year.

With the addition of this equipment

the SFD will be one of the front line crews in the area. Most of the sur-rounding fire departments, if not all, do not have side sonar capabilities as far as they know.

“It’s super advantageous because, at present, most of the radio reception drops out at the river,” said Ryan Par-kins, with the SFD.

“With this new system not only will it be noise cancelling so we can hear other guys on the intercom, but we’ll actually be able to communicate with any dispatch that’s talking to us at the time, whether it’ll be Calgary or Strath-more. It will help us coordinate efforts better and therefore make our work more efficient and safe.”

With the new sonar equipment the SFD will have a better chance of hav-ing more rescues than recoveries. SFD firefighter and president of the Strath-more Fire Fighters Association, Jamie LaChance, said it was like having no eyes and looking in the dark, to sud-denly having a spotlight on everything.

“Before what we had was just a sys-

tem that allowed us to see just the bot-tom, directly what was underneath the boat out to maybe five feet on either side of the boat,” said LaChance.

“The side sonar now creates an im-age almost 180 degrees to the boat and 150 feet of the centre each side, so your scope of view is massive, it just became tremendous.”

Calgary, Brooks and now Strathmore are the only three communities in the area which have the side sonar equip-ment.

Westmount fundraising efforts easy on everyoneShannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Fundraising can be a tough and te-dious task, and there is always the con-cern not enough people will say yes to help. Westmount Elementary School, in collaboration with Sobeys, has found an easy way to fundraise by offering some-thing everyone needs, groceries.

“We approached Neil (Kennedy) just to see if there was some kind of a fund-raising thing we could do with Sobeys. He broached the idea of this grocery

card program with us,” said Wayne Funk, principal of Westmount. “Neil’s going above and beyond for the amount of work that he’s doing with us and it’s just a phenomenal fundraiser for us, re-ally easy and great partnership for us and Sobeys and it’s lucrative for us, it works well.”

Families can sign up for a predeter-mined amount of groceries a month, for example $400 a month and they can pick up the gift card at the store at the start of the month. The families pay the school directly for it, and Sobeys gives the school a 10 per cent discount. If a family were to buy a gift card for $500 a month for 12 months, they would raise $600 just by buying groceries, with no negative cost to them.

“It’s a program we will offer to any non profit group, so it’s not something that’s just exclusive to Westmount. They are the only group in town that has ever participated in it, and I guess I got in-volved mostly because that’s where my children go,” said Neil Kennedy, owner of Strathmore Sobeys.

By the time all of his children are done school he will have had one at Westmount for 19 years, which he said is why he thinks he pushed a little hard-er with them.

“We tell parents, if you spend $800 a month on groceries, well don’t buy an $800 card, buy a $400 card so you have some flexibility. If you know you’re go-ing spend at least that minimum $400 to

$500 it’s an easy way to fund your chil-dren’s school, or group,” said Kennedy.

The cards don’t expire and can be used at any Sobeys in Western Canada. At Westmount it is school council orien-tated, and Funk said everything is run-ning smoothly with it now. Last year the school managed to raise over $11,000 using the program, and eliminating the need for other fundraising initiatives.

“For the most part it’s a really slick system now, it works really nicely. Peo-ple are buying their groceries locally and helping to support the school at the same time. It’s a win-win no brainer,” said Funk.

“If we can fundraise through this Sobeys plan $13,000, then the school council feels they have no other need to fundraise.”

Most people sign up for nine months, which is the school year, or can do a 12-month commitment as well. Funk himself uses the card and said every month a portion of the money he spends on groceries comes back to the school.

“They are open to people who aren’t Westmount parents as well. If there are grandparents or anybody who buys their groceries at Sobeys and wants to chip in they can stop in before the 18,” said Funk.

The final day to get an order in for the cards and to help the school is Sept. 18, though anything that comes in the morning of the 19, will still be accepted.

MP Kevin Sorenson made an announcement on Sept. 9 that Strathmore has been approved for a low-cost in-frastructure loan. Sorenson, on behalf of the Honour-able Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development and Min-ister Responsible, made the announcement for Canada Mortgage and Housing Cor-poration, CMHC.

“Drinking water is an es-sential service that people depend upon and communi-ties are faced with a constant struggle to keep up with growth and maintenance pressures within limited fi-nancial resources,” said May-or Steve Grajczyk.

The loan, which totals just over $4 million, is a low cost loan from CMHC’s Municipal Infrastructure Lending Pro-gram, MILP. Chief Adminis-trative Officer for the town Dwight Stanford said the town is borrowing at five per cent below administration costs. Though the announce-ment took place on Sept. 9, the funds have already been

used to upgrade the water supply system, including the construction of the water pipeline from Calgary.

“We were pleased to re-ceive funding through the Municipal Infrastructure Lending Program from Can-ada and Mortgage Housing Corporation for just over $4.1 million,” said Grajczyk.

“With 13,000 residents and a forecast for continued growth, the new waterline will support the anticipated growth and Strathmore’s continued goal to be a truly sustainable community.”

“Our government under-stands the importance of in-frastructure in maintaining strong and prosperous com-munities,” said Sorenson.

“This program opened the door here in Strathmore and in municipalities across Can-ada to meet their housing-related infrastructure needs. Canada’s Economic Action Plan will continue to create jobs and stimulate the local economy here in Alberta, and in all corners of the country.”

Canada’s Economic Action Plan has provided $2 billion over two years in direct low-cost loans to municipalities.

The loans were available to all municipalities in Canada, and were a way to provide a new source of funds to invest in housing-related infrastruc-ture projects. Project eligible for the low cost loans in-cluded infrastructure related

to housing services, such as water, power generation and waste services. It also includ-ed transportation infrastruc-ture, within and into resi-dential areas, such as roads, sidewalks, lighting, fire halls and residential green spaces.

Grajczyk said if the town were to borrow $10 million it will put Strathmore approximately 108 per cent in debt, some-thing he said the town couldn’t afford either.

“Personally I feel that the risk we have currently assumed is high. The storage that we have in town, I don’t feel is suf-ficient. As the town continues to grow we are only assuming additional risk in my opinion,” said Parker.

The more homes that come onto the line, the higher the demand is and the less storage there will be available. Parker said they have assumed a significant amount of risk already by allowing the current reservoir to fall below the capacity of two days of storage in the event of an emergency.

If the break were to happen in Calgary the town would have four days worth of water in the line. The time frame would shrink the closer the break in the line is to Strathmore

“I realize we’re looking at a lot of money here, but a lot of people in Strathmore are not 100 per cent happy relying on a pipeline…out of Calgary to feed us the water. If we don’t have a backup system in place here, if we can’t get some more stor-age in place here, then I don’t know” said Councillor Rocky Blokland.

Blokland also questioned if there was a large fire, if the town has the water capacity to put it out. Parker said they would be able to with the current source. However, there would likely

be watering restrictions imposed in people’s homes. Chief Administrative Officer for the town, Dwight Stanford,

also stated that previous fire chiefs have said if the storage were to run out, they would be able to pump water out of Kinsmen Lake.

Stanford said financially the town is okay on the design side of things, but as for the construction the finances haven’t been worked out, something the town accountant is working on.

There has already been money budgeted into the 2011 bud-get for the design phase of this project.

Parker said it’s not that the system is going to fail right away, but it’s a matter of how much risk are they willing to take. There is the possibility that if things take too long to get started the town may have to put a moratorium on the con-struction of the new homes.

“Off-site levies will fund the project, the design as well as construction. We do not currently have a water reserve suf-ficient to fund the project,” said Parker.

Still, the question of how to get the money and the risks involved remained the sore spot of the discussion. After lengthy debate council agreed to award the Wildflower reser-voir engineering services contract to Associated Engineering with a condition that construction may be potentially delayed for a maximum of two years, for an amount not exceeding $898,158. Whether Associated Engineering will accept the contract remains to be seen.

mP Kevin Sorenson was happy to bring good news on Sept. 9, when he announced Strathmore has been approved for a low-cost infrastructure loan as a part of Canada’s economic Action Plan. Kevin Sorenson, left, mayor Steve Grajczyk, right.

Fall Facts

Trees take water from the ground through their roots & take carbon dioxide from the air. They also use the energy from sunlight to produce sugar, which together is called photosynthesis.

Because of the wide variety of trees, Eastern Canada is one of the best places in the world for viewing fall colors.

Bright red & purple colors come from anthocyanin (an-thuh-’si-uh-nuhn) pigments, like in maple leaves, are formed from trapped glucose.

Brown colors come from a waste product called tannin, orange colors comes from carotene (‘kar-uh-teen) & the yellows from xanthophyll (‘zan-thuh-fil)

The leave colors red, yellow & brown are in the leaves all year long & only become exposed when the green chlorophyll disappears in the fall.

Mulching fall leaves where they fall lets them decompose so that they can release their minerals back to the underlying soil.

Maples, Oaks, Elms, Birch & Ash trees are just a few of the trees that give spectacular colors during the autumn season.

Fall colors are best when late summer is dry & autumn has bright sunny days & cool nights below 5 °C.

Fall days become shorter & many plants stop making food. That is when the green chlorophyll starts to disappear from the leaves.

Most leaves fall from trees because the ends of the branch are sealed off near the leaf stem to protect the tree through the long winter months.

Composting fall leaves is an excellent way to improve yard & garden soils. Mixing green & brown materials together is the basic rule.

Dinner and fun

Letters to the editor

To the EditorSplash park, no two words can bring more summer

time happiness or more hours of entertainment for my toddler and myself. With the beautiful weather we had this summer my daughter and I visited the splash park on an almost daily basis. But with August 31 fast approaching we knew our fun times were soon com-ing to an end. When I noticed the park still splashing

during the first week of very hot September I was thrilled, what more could we ask for. We just wanted to say thank you to the wonderful Town of Strathmore for extending the days, it is appreciated by many!

To the EditorCanadian farmers feed the world, and they deserve

the freedom to make their own business decisions. As I have said from the start, no expensive survey can obstruct Western Canadian grain farmers from having the same rights as farmers in other parts of Canada and around the world.

This week, the CWB will announce the results of their expensive survey. The Board will say the results give legitimacy to their travelling road show, fear mongering and defeatist approach. The Board will insist that only a percentage, namely the percentage that supports them, have the right to choose how ev-eryone markets their grain. Mr. Oberg will say that without a monopoly to control farmers, the grain industry will shrivel up and cease to exist. Farmers know better.

Farmers know that both the ballot question and dis-

tribution list were seriously flawed. The CWB refuses to recognize that every farmer, regardless of whether they support the monopoly or not, should be able to choose how they market their grain. The Board will fail to remember that even their own survey this spring said that when given the choice between a sin-gle desk, dual market, and open market, 58 per cent chose either a dual market or an open market.

Our Government’s top priority is the economy in which the agriculture industry plays a vital role. We know that an open market will attract investment, in-novation and value-added jobs. Farmers can be confi-dent that our Government will continue to work with the entire value chain to ensure a smooth transition to Western Canadian grain marketing freedom.!

Looking forward to an open market

To the EditorThe fine citizens of Strathmore will be invited to

participate in public information sessions sponsored by the Town of Strathmore in the near future to dis-cuss the pro’s and con’s of Strathmore changing it’s status from a “town” to a “city”.

The writing is on the wall that Strathmore will be-come a “city” regardless of the opinions of the popu-lous. Do you all remember that there was a plebiscite on weather or not to build the swimming pool? Sixty plus per cent said no to building the swimming pool and we got it anyway.

Plebiscites are not legally binding and an obvious waste of money considering the previous effects. If we become a “city” we will become financially respon-sible for the maintenance and up keep of both the “Trans Canada Highway” and “817” throughout the current “town” boundaries. Snow removal, repairs and much more.

If anyone says anything different you need to see it in writing. The “City of Calgary” is responsible for

16th Ave which is “The Trans Canada Highway,” so why would we be any different? We wouldn’t be. This is clearly again an underlying issue that is being fos-tered by the Town Management.

Who actually benefits other than continually in-creasing the size of the “town staff’? With more staff being hired the current “town office” is breaking at the seems.

A new “city office” has been rumoured to be pro-posed for future construction at the recent property acquisition near Kinsmen Park down town. Who pays for all of this? We do the tax payer. Who is held re-sponsible?

Every three years we hold a Municipal Election holding the council and mayor to task. Should we not look deeper and possibly hire new management with clearer vision of our collective futures in mind?

We are all in this together.

Over the weekend was the first annu-al Watermelon Crawl and Fill the Postal Van for the food bank event. Organiz-ers from this even put on a great time and also an affordable weekend. For a few soup cans or boxes of KD you got raffle tickets to win awesome prizes and for $10 you could camp out with the proceeds going to the food bank.

The afternoon started with mingling and hello’s it was a blast, the company was great. Then before dinner there was a few dance competitions with this kids which was amazing. There was also some karaoke. Then the fire-men showed up! A HUGE thank you, to the Strathmore Fire Department for all their contributions to the event. We even managed to get them dancing and singing.

After a great dinner we all watched some wonderful Native Dancing put on buy Hammer Hill Dancing. They preformed a number of dances and everyone was just memorized by the dancing. At the end everyone tool part

in the friendship dance. After a few pictures the fire and the dance started. The music was supplied by All Genres DJ Service. The dance was a huge hit!

Unfortunately, organizers did not make their mark. They are now chal-lenging the community and businesses.

“We still want to fill the postal van” says organizers. They have provided a phone number. Please call this number if you have a donation that you would like to make. They will pick it up from you. Call 403-901-1449.

kevin soRenson, m.P., CRowfootParliamentary Report

By the time you read this I will be in Ottawa attending the Conserva-tive Party of Canada’s Annual Nation-al Caucus Retreat. All Conservative Members of Parliament, including the Prime Minister and Cabinet Ministers will meet to make final preparations for the Autumn Session of Parliament. Based on the policies we campaigned on in the May 2011 election, we have a full mandate to implement.

Our focus remains on the perfor-mance of the economy as we carefully nurture Canada’s fragile recovery from the effects of the global economic downturn. Too many nations in the world continue to suffer under mas-sive debt loads and budgetary deficits that restrict what they can accomplish in the near and long term.

Over the past few years, even in the two previous minority Parliaments, our Conservative government has managed to successfully confront the recession; maintain the integrity of our financial and banking systems; move forward with trade opportunities; help create the conditions to provide jobs for Canadians; realize economic growth; and provide a strong stable federal government, among many oth-er things.

The Opposition parties have not fared so well. The Bloc Quebecois has been virtually eliminated; the Liberals have registered a ‘worst-ever’ perfor-mance; and the NDP – for all its suc-cess in 2011 – has been devastated by the loss of its leader.

Since 2006, our Conservative gov-ernment has proceeded to bring the policy changes Canadian voters have supported at the ballot box despite the trials and tribulations flowing from the Opposition. In the current majority Parliamentary situation, we hope that the Opposition will work with us to provide the best policy decisions on

Gary McPherson Leadership Award and the Awards of Excellence. The Gary McPherson Leadership Award is pre-sented to individual Albertans who have demonstrated outstanding leadership or achievement in enhancing or enriching the lives of people with disabilities.

The Awards of Excellence recognize individuals, teams or organizations that are committed to the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in four catego-ries: education, employment, communi-ty and public awareness.

The nomination deadline is Sept. 30 and award recipients will be honoured in their communities, often as part of the United Nations’ International Day of Per-sons with Disabilities’ celebrations that are held across Alberta in December.

the programs and services that our federal government provides for Ca-nadians. While we were elected to pursue our specific political agenda, we want the procedures and process-es of Canada’s national legislature to operate as they should so that fair and constructive debate leads to the best policy decisions – file by file.

The 41st Parliament has already established itself as a time of change in the political landscape of Canada. I am confident that this will remain true as we proceed.

In the lead-up to the Autumn Sit-ting of Parliament, the Opposition parties know that MPs in Conser-vative National Caucus will: end the costly and ineffective long-gun registry; provide the same market freedoms for Western farmers as the ones already enjoyed by Central and Eastern farmers; continue to refur-bish, upgrade, and expand Canada’s long neglected penal institutions; continue to provide our Armed Forc-es personnel with the equipment they need to safely do their jobs; stand up against the criminal ele-ment in our country; help Canadian Seniors, workers and families; and ensure that Canada retains its posi-tion in the international community as a beacon of hope to many nations facing difficult social, political and economic challenges.

In our centuries old Westminster Parliamentary tradition, the time for political polarization is during elec-tions. Once the ballots have been counted, the democratically elected representatives of the people are expected to accomplish the work of implementing the decisions reached on Election Day. In the 41st Parlia-ment, we have a fresh opportunity for all Members of Parliament to work together on the floor of the House of Commons Chamber and in the Standing Committees.

While the entire world was focused on William and Kate this summer, Rosebud actors were con-centrating on perfecting this fall’s performance of their own “royally funny” couple Prince Edward and Millicent Milroy, the young lady who captured his heart before Wallace Simpson. Rosebud Dinner Theatre’s latest show ‘Queen Milli of Galt’ is a true love story of Royalty meets “hometown” girl.

When the handsome, young Prince Edward visits Galt, Ontario in the autumn of 1919 everyone wants to see him - everyone that is except Millicent Milroy. Milli would rather work in her garden than join the throngs hoping to catch even a glimpse of the king-to-be. An escape from his relentless schedule leads Edward down Milli’s gar-den path. When the two meet, what begins as mu-tual disdain for each other gradually evolves into an extraordinary romance that leads to the crowning of ‘Queen Milli of Galt’.

Executive Director Mor-ris Ertman comments, “It

is amazing to me that we Canadians have our very own Wallace Simpson sto-ry in Milli Milroy of Galt, Ontario. The fact that ‘The King’s Speech’ introduced us to a heart-forward, if tragic Edward VIII who chooses Wallace Simpson over the throne. It is fol-lowed closely by more of his story on our Rosebud Theatre stage that creates another interesting chapter of Royal intrigue for Royal-story-hungry Canadians.”

Edward, played by Karl Sine, and Milli, played by Heather Zacharias, were two very vibrant characters in this production. Sine and Zacharias have been on stage together before and have an amazing chemistry with one another, as well as with the other seasoned characters in this produc-tion, including Alysa van-Haastert as Mona Single-ton, Steve Waldschmidt as Godfrey, local favourite Marie Russell as Mrs. Mil-roy and Emma Cobb as the journalist.

Zacharias, who was born in Galt before its name was changed to Cambridge, has had a busy summer on Rosebud’s Studio Stage playing Eve in The Diary of Adam and Eve. She is over-

joyed to be appearing at the Opera House this fall. “I first heard about “Queen Mill’s” story when I worked for the Cambridge Histori-cal Society. It’s a Cambridge urban myth. No one knows all the facts about her life, but I think the way the play frames her story is beauti-ful, and funny. I laughed out loud when I read the script for the first time. …I love Milli. She’s feisty and won’t take any guff from anyone. She’s a real human being, who gives the prince a run for his money, which I think is great.”

Executive Director Morris

Ertman comments, “This is one of the best plays I’ve worked on in a long time. It comes off the page like an entertainment rocket and then lands something on your heart that just doesn’t go away. It’s the must-see of the season for those who want to leave the theatre feeling like ev-ery part of their entertain-ment hunger has been sati-ated. I love this play, and I think audiences will too!”

For tickets and informa-tion on this season’s per-formances please contact Rosebud’s Theatre Box Of-fice at 1-800-267-7553.

Preserving Our LifelineC. LaCombe Bow River Basin Council

“A watershed is a place that people, critters, plants and businesses, all share and are interlinked and interconnected,” says David Hill, Program Di-rector, AWRI.

I think it’s one of the great interests that we share but we don’t often think about.

One of the aspects David feels we don’t often think about is that water always flows downhill. He recounts watching water suddenly appear in his yard as snowmelt caused his sump pump to engage. He followed the water’s path as it made its way to the curb and gutter to begin its journey back to the North Saskatchewan River.

“Thank goodness gravity works and water does flow downhill. It doesn’t matter where it lands, it’s going down. So whatever we do in one way or another is going to impact somebody who lives downstream of us.”

David says that once we have awareness that we live in a watershed and our actions impact every-one in the watershed, we can begin to think dif-ferently about various activities on the landscape.

“Maybe we can have a conversation about what our interests are, the values that we share and then, we can make individual decisions that are in our collective interests.” David talks about how water ignores political boundaries and yet is political.

“There’s this nice place in the Columbia Ice Fields called the snow dome and it’s actually what

they refer to as a triple hydrographic apex. And a drop of water that lands on the Snow Dome will either end up in the Pacific, the Arctic or Hudson Bay.” Most of Alberta’s precipitation travels to Hud-son Bay, Gulf of Mexico or the Arctic.

He contends that water can be a source of demo-cratic cooperation or a cause for hostility. With wa-tersheds connecting municipalities, provinces and countries, it offers a natural shared interest.

“I think finding that shared interest is very im-portant,” he says adding that it could teach us how we can meet individual and collective needs in peaceful, cooperative ways.

In Alberta’s case, the Water For Life Strategy sets the tone. “Alberta’s water strategy recognizes the need for people to come together around water issues. It recognizes the need for people to be en-gaged,” he says. He points out that passionate emo-tions and political positions show up quite quickly in all discussions about water. That fact makes the discussions interesting, but also unruly at times and ineffective. Albertans needed a way to come together around water issues and get some forward momentum. He says they got it in the Strategy.

“Water for Life at its heart talks about engaging the public in figuring out ways to do more with what we have and at the same time to do it more sustainable.”

Hill asserts that with the right tools and opportu-nities, people can solve any issue. “The amount of creativity that people can bring to an issue is really quite surprising,” Hill says.

Moving on to new thingsShannon LeCLair Times Reporter

After eight years working with, and promoting Rosebud, executive director Bob Davis has decided to resign from his role. Davis is taking on a new role in tourism development with the Canadian Badlands Limited.

“There was an opportunity to work on a wider regional basis, which inter-ested me and I feel like a number of key challenges at Rosebud have been ac-complished, most notably the Rosebud Mercantile,” said Davis.

“With those accomplishments now done I’m looking for some new chal-lenges for myself and also to pass the torch to someone else at Rosebud to take Rosebud forward into its next chapter of development.”

Davis plans to continue with his role of executive director until the end of Oc-tober. The Rosebud Centre of the Arts is still searching for a replacement.

“I’m hoping to continue much of the work that’s been gone on so far and to help communities initiate new projects or strategies to continue to make the Badlands a great place to visit,” said Da-vis about working with the Badlands.

One big accomplishment that stands out in Davis’ mind was when Rosebud celebrated the theatre’s 25 anniversary in 2008. He said the production of ‘Fid-dler on the Roof’ that summer highlight-ed an entire year’s worth of celebration. Another thing that stands out for him is the development of a really great group of people. He said they have a really strong staff that has grown over the years.

He is proud and happy to say the staff is energetic and visionary and seems to have a collective will to make rosebud the best it can be .

Did You Know? the moon makes 1 rotation and completes a revolution

around the Earth every 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes?

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter

Walking around with a liquor bottle in a brown paper bag and cursing is just one of the traits people love about the Trailer Park Boys’ Mr. Lahey. On Sept. 22 Lahey will be joined by his longtime companion Randy in entertaining pa-trons at Wild Fire Saloon in Langdon.

“We really want to be a part of the com-munity and we like bringing something unique, and fun, and cool,” said Cal Lloyd, who owns the Saloon with his wife.

“Something different, something that

you would actually see in Calgary that is out in our little small town.”

Ticket buyers will get a 90-minute show, a buffet dinner - trailer park style - featuring Kraft Dinner. Everyone will also have an opportunity to get an indi-vidual photo with the boys and an au-tograph.

“It’s a smoking deal because some-thing like this would probably go for a minimum of $69 and up in the city, but we’re not trying to gouge everybody. We’re just trying to provide a service that’s in a fun, cool, unique atmosphere for everyone,” said Lloyd.

“I think it’s going to be a very unique experience for people to get up close and personal in an intimate setting with the Trailer Park Boys.”

Tickets are selling for $24.95 a single ticket, and $39.95 for a couple. Lloyd said they are selling fast, and with capac-ity for only 170 people, he recommends hurrying to the saloon to get tickets be-fore they sell out.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. on the 22 and the show starts at 8 p.m. It’s not reserved seating, and is instead a first come, first serve basis. If everything runs as well as he is hoping, then Lloyd

said he would consider bringing the boys back in the future.

“If time permits and the demand is there, then yeah, absolutely we’d be looking at doing a second show,” said Lloyd.

“Our intentions are, over the next handful of months, we want to do some-thing on this caliber on a monthly basis.”

The saloon has recently changed man-agement and Lloyd and his wife have decided they want to add a little bit of fun into the place. Keep an eye on Wild Fire Saloon to see who they may bring in next.

If the first two exhibition games are any indication, the Wheatland Kings should have no trouble putting the puck in the net.

The local Junior B hockey team scored 14 goals in two preseason home games over the weekend, defeating Three Hills 7-3 on Sept. 10, before posting a 7-7 tie with the Okotoks Bisons the following day.

“It is nice to get the offensive out-put,” said Kings head coach and general manager Doug Murphy. “It is also really good to see the character of the guys to come back (in both) games. They’d score and we’d come back and answer. That is really good.

“There’s a lot of real good things out there – lots of speed, lots of offence.”

According to Murphy, the team will use the next three exhibition games to prepare for the season opener in two

Showing their offensive punchweeks time.

Obviously the offence is in mid-sea-son mode, but the defense needs some work, said the coach.

“We need better defensive zone cover-age,” laughed the coach. “We need better positional play. (Netminder) Richie Hub-bell has been stunning with some of the stops he’s made, so it’s certainly not an issue of goaltending. For coming out of camp and having one practice and jump-ing into two exhibition games, it’s going to be a little ragged. That’s the problem with wide-open hockey for a couple of weeks. Everyone thinks they’re playing pond hockey again.

“We need to get back to good, struc-tured hockey.”

The Kings have tried something a little different for this years exhibition games. Instead of carrying 28-30 players during the preseason, they are much closer to their regular season lineup.

“We wanted to get down to our num-bers much quicker,” said Murphy. “We have some more guys coming (from oth-er camps), so with each step along the way, you want to make sure you (don’t have a lot of) guys sitting out of games.

“If you look at Okotoks, there are 12 guys in the stands. We prefer to cut down sooner and be looking at one or two guys instead of 10.”

While the Kings roster is nearly com-plete, the team is looking for help in the front office for the upcoming season. The Kings are looking for a trainer with advanced first aid certification, such as an EMR or EMT.

They are also looking for a manager for upcoming season. If you are inter-ested in either position, please contact Doug Murphy via e-mail at [email protected] or call 403-934-6493.

WPCA qualifications held in StrathmoreThe Strathmore Ag. Society rodeo grounds were the host to the WPCA Qualification Run-off this past weekend. The event began Sept. 8 to 11, and was to held to pick the top five to move onto the 2012 WPCA tour. Gary Gorst ranked first, Logan Gorst came in second, Roger moore and Dave Galloway tied for third and fourth and Jason Johnstone took fifth place.

The Wheatland Kings opened their exhibition schedule with a pair of home games Sept. 10-11 at the Strathmore Family Centre. The Ju-nior B team defeated Three Hills 7-3 before settling for a 7-7 tie with Okotoks the fol-lowing day.

While they may not have walked away champi-ons, the peewee Spartans football team still felt pretty good knowing they got to play at McMahon Stadium this past weekend. On Sept. 10 the team faced off against Innisfail on the pro field, some-thing that was a treat for each and every player.

“I played it (McMahon field) in atom (football) with coach Doug. It’s pretty cool,” said running back Ethan Monaghan.

“I really wanted to play football since my dad played in it and it’s really fun. He played when he was young to old and he said it was really fun.”

Monaghan, 12, has been playing for the past four years, and is considered one of the top play-ers on the team.

“For the kids themselves it was a nice experi-ence, they really enjoyed themselves and blowing out like they did they still had a good time playing there,” said head coach Doug Klauck.

“We came up against a team that was much big-ger, and they were prepared. It was a little hard to swallow when we walked out there and saw how big those kids were.”

Though the scoreboard didn’t reflect what they were hoping to achieve, the game did give the coaches and the team ideas of what to work on before the next game.

“It was a good test for us because we got to play against another team finally and we got to know what adjustments we need to make in practice this week to prepare for Saturday. We have to toughen up our defense and work on our offensive line,” said Klauck.

The peewee Spartans will be a part of the dou-bleheader happening at Strathmore High Schools field on Sept. 17.

The UFA Bisons wrapped up a week-long training camp with their annual Red & White games Sept. 11 at the Strath-more Family Centre.

The local triple-A midget team carried 45 players going into the game, where the Red Team won 3-0, before trimming the roster to nearly 30 players.

“I think we saw a lot – we were looking for some sepa-ration from some guys and I think we’ve definitely saw that,” said Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen. “We were looking for some certain type of players and we saw that.

“I think we’re going to have some speed, some good size up front and our backend is mo-bile and quick.

“We’ve got some really tough decisions to make in all the po-sitions.”

According to Friesen, the coaching staff was looking for

players who have improved during the course of the train-ing camp. As the pace picked up, some player’s level of play stayed the same, while some of the players elevated their game.

Friesen said that the Red & White game was a real eye-opener.

“A low-scoring (Red & White) game isn’t a bad thing,” said the coach. “The thing is there were quite a few penalties with the new headshot rule coming into effect – we saw that first hand today.

“It’s a chemistry thing too, when guys aren’t used to play-ing with each other, the offen-sive opportunities aren’t quite there. (However) defensively, I think that’s what you have suc-cess with, so that is the most important thing. We start from there and the offence comes second.”

The Bisons are now gearing up to host their annual exhi-bition tournament this com-ing weekend at the Strathmore

Family Centre. The locals will host Red Deer

Sept. 15 (6:30 p.m.), the Calgary Northstars Sept. 16 (5:30 p.m.) and the Calgary Buffaloes Sept. 17 (11:45 a.m.). The four-team playoffs will begin on Saturday night (4 p.m. & 6:45 p.m.), be-fore the final games on Sunday morning (9 a.m. & 11:45 a.m.).

“By (the time the tournament starts), we’ve seen these guys for a couple of weeks now. You start to get to know them a little bit and you have more conver-sations with them,” said Fries-en. “Throughout next weekend, you get to spend some more one-on-one time with them and really challenge them on areas that they need to improve on and showcase themselves.

“It comes down to work ethic and attention to detail. It’s more or less, at the end of the day, a progression as well. If you’re taking one guy com-pared to the next, you wanna see where they’ll be come … playoff time.”

Bisons inch closer to starting roster

The UFA Bisons hosted their annual Red & White Game on Sept. 12 at the Strathmore Family Cen-tre. The team is now pre-paring for their exhibition home tournament Sept. 15-18.

The Bantam Girls “A” team were out last Saturday preparing themselves for their first game against an “A” league team. They will be playing a double header exhibition game against a Calgary Bantam GASP “A” team next weekend in Strathmore. So far their are 16 girls trying out for the team, and only 12 spots to be had. They will be doing team indoor tryouts beginning in Feburary. Coach Lanky Johnson has high hopes for these girls. “The goal for this team is to try and qualify for Western Canadian Finals or Nationals Finals. In order to do that you must finish in top 4-5 teams at provincials in Alberta. We will have a young team but with the leadership of our returning players from this years bantam provincial “B” gold medal team (Strathmore Thunder) I think we can field a very nice team. We may have an opportunity to host the Western Canadian Finals but we do require local support and sponsorship for that.”

PRESS RELEASE

VALUE DRUG MART’S 8th. ANNUAL KITZ 4 KIDZCAMPAIGN ANOTHER SUCCESSKitz 4 Kidz, Value Drug Mart’s initiative to collect school supplies for children in need, ended its eighth successful campaign on August 27 with over $25,000 of school supplies collected from stores across Alberta and British Columbia.

On a local level, Strathmore Value Drug Mart collected kitz and donations amounting to over $1,000.00 for the community!

Over the past eight years, Value Drug Mart has been providing school supplies for chil-dren who are unable to begin the school year with the basic necessities. The Kitz 4 Kidz program was introduced to raise more school supplies and awareness for less fortunate children while ensuring donations stay in the community in which they were collected.

Beginning August 1st, Value Drug Mart customers had the option of donating their choice of individual school supplies, cash donations or two “Kitz” which were made up of an assortment of pre-selected school. Supplies. All told, Value Drug Mart Stores collected and distributed cash donations, individual school supplies and over 3,000 kitz during the four-week campaign that concluded on August 27.

If parents are unable to provide their children with required school supplies, they should inform their child’s teacher or principal of the school. Teachers can then contact their lo-cal school board for the requested items. Supplies are given discreetly to ensure privacy.

The Strathmore Spartans senior football team played their first game of the season in Drumheller Satur-day afternoon, Sept. 10. Although they couldn’t come home with a win, there were many positives to take away from the loss.

“The passing game was working for us, and for the first game of the year there were very few penalties,” said head coach Carl Seafoot. Right from the start of the game, Strath-more’s defense did a great job con-taining the complex offence of the Drumheller team, something Strath-more’s defensive coach has been fo-cusing on since mid-August, when the team started practice.

It took a while for the offence to get started after being stopped on the second yard line. The team did a good job rebounding with the first touchdown pass of the season from quarterback Cory Campbell to wide receiver James Giancola at the end of the first half. The Drumheller of-fence scored two quick touch downs

midway through the second half and controlled the clock to pick up a 34-10 victory. “We played well in the second half, aside from a couple of big plays they broke open. Our de-fense did a great job stopping the of-fense from moving the ball down the field,” said Seafoot.

This week in local fooTballThe senior Spartans played an ex-

hibition game against the Brooks Buffalos on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Re-sults were not available as of press time.

Also coming up this week, both the bantam and the peewee Spartans will be playing a double header at home this Saturday, starting at 11:30 a.m. The peewee team will start the day with a game against the Stettler Panthers, followed by the Bantam team in their game against the Rocky Mountain House Jr Rebels.

Having played Strathmore football over the last five years, this writer understands how much the players enjoy hearing all the fans cheering them on. Come out and support your community football teams!
