Members of the Strathmore business community are mourning the loss of a tremendous community-minded man.

Claude Gauvin, owner of Trendsetter Homes, was tragically killed Sept. 27, leaving a huge void in the town, says Strathmore Mayor Steve Grajczyk.

“He was a great community man – he did a lot for the c o m m u n i t y,” said Grajczyk. “He was a very, very spirited man and ac-tually a great part in building this commu-nity. When he came here, the population was much less and he built hun-dreds of homes for many families.

“It is a great loss to the community.”In addition to his strong work ethic,

Gauvin volunteered countless hours to charity, including being a board member of the Strathmore & District Agricultural Society.

That is where he worked with Grajc-zyk, who was the President of the Ag. Society.

“He donated his time, he donated his products, he donated his labour – a big part of the front (at the Ag Society) is his dirt and rocks (he donated),” said Grajc-zyk, adding that he was an instrumental part in making the Strathmore Heritage Days a success.

“It’s really tough because he was an all around great guy.”

According to Grajczyk, he has many great memories of his friend, who will be missed.

“He was a very enthusiastic man and when he wanted something done, he got his point across,” smiled Grajczyk. “He had a humerous way (to do it), some-times mixing his French with his English.

“He will be dearly missed.”

Wildflower Ranch hosted their annual charity golf tour-nament on Sept. 22, with all of the proceeds being put into the Wildflower Ranch Community Support Founda-tion.

“We had 78 golfers out for the tournament, and they were all involved with Wildflower Ranch in one way or another, either through our builders or our trades people,” said Ken Struss with Cancorp, and an owner of the Wild-flower Ranch development.

“They all paid $120 a golfer to golf, so the proceeds from that went to our charity as well as sponsorship. We had about eight to ten sponsors that donated money and we raised … close to $12,000 for our charity.”

The Foundation was set up as a way to give back to the community, providing a helping hand for those who may not qualify for funding from other organizations or gov-ernment grants. The mandate of the Foundation is to be there when no one else is and try to fill the gaps where traditional social services organizations fall short.

Applications to request help have been circulated throughout town. There is a board for the applicant to submit their request to. The board then reviews the ap-plication and the funds are advanced to applicant, or the applicant is reimbursed.

Rockyford resident Dani-elle (Dani) Gariepy is all smiles these days, and for good reason.

On Sept. 24 she was se-lected as one of the top six finalists in line for the cen-tennial Calgary Stampede throne.

The competition for the 2012 Stampede Queen be-gan at the beginning of Sep-tember and saw just over 20 girls vying for the Stam-pede’s top spot.

The competitors have been kept busy with din-ners, speeches, riding com-petitions and interviews, all of which they are judged on.

“It’s very busy, between school and work and sports. This stampede queen stuff is a lot, it’s busy but, it’s re-ally fun and you meet so many interesting people,” said Gariepy.

“I mean the girls that you’re competing with, you already have something in common with them just by being there.”

Gariepy decided in the summer to try to become royalty. She has been in-volved with the Stampede and coaching future rodeo queens for quite a while. One of the reasons Gari-epy said she tried this year is because she has had a chance to meet a lot of roy-alty while being a Stampede ranch girl.

“I got to ride during the Stampede and meet a lot of really awesome girls that have gone through the pro-gram. I also run the Rocky-ford Horse Club and within that is the Rockyford Ro-deo Queen program which I kind of facilitated during the last five years or so,” said Gariepy.

“Even if I don’t (win) the experience is worth so much. It’s been really fun, and if I don’t (win) I will try again next year,” said Gari-epy.

“It’s been really good, and I hope I can just be

need of a helping hand. We’ve helped out single families that needed money for kids for school supplies or for clothing. We’ve helped several people that needed food hampers that just didn’t have the money,” said Struss.

“It’s a non-profit charity that we set up, we raise money through our company. There are no admin fees, we look after all of the administration ourselves at no cost to the charity.”

To date there has been between $50,000 to $60,000 raised for the foundation and the community.

Golfers spent a day at the Strathmore golf course on Sept. 22 to raise money for a good cause.

Grade 5 students from Westmount Elementary School had a chance to learn first hand how they could help those less fortu-nate on Sept. 22.

Marie Van Driel’s class went to Marianne and George Pinchbeck’s house to pick carrots, clean them up and then deliver them to the food bank. The Pinch-becks grandson Mitchell is in the class, and this is the second time the couple has had students come by pick-ing carrots.

“Mrs. Pinchbeck (is) a for-mer Grade 2 teacher her-self, and so she had an ex-cess of carrots and wanted to donate them to the food bank,” said Van Driel.

“We came over to help

out, and pick and scrub and clean and deliver them over. It’s good for the kids to serve in the community and know that there’s a need at the food bank, and that they need to help their community.”

“We did it when I was in Grade 2, and we just thought that it was good for the food bank, and to donate it to people,” said Mitchell Pinchbeck.

“We’ll probably do this again in two years or so, I think we’ll do this again.”

Marianne Pinchbeck still works for Golden Hills School Division and said it is very close to her. With their home located just blocks from the school it made sense to have the kids come by.

Crowther Memorial Ju-nior High School held their annual fundraiser for the Terry Fox Foundation in collaboration with the an-nual run.

Last year approximately $10,000 was raised and this year the school was already more than halfway there by Sept. 22, the day of the run.

The students are asked to donate a minimum pledge, though it is not mandatory.

“We ask that if you prob-ably spend $2 on chips at

a lunch hour so maybe you donate $2. We ask for it, but it’s not enforced,” said Glenda Sorensen, one of the organizers of the run and fundraiser.

Some of the students will do their best to raise as much as possible, which helps the school meet new goals every year.

To start things off the entire school watched a tribute video, which used to feature Terry Fox. This year the video was about students and staff members whose lives have been af-fected in some way by can-

stations set up throughout the 5.5 kilometre run. When the students returned to the school they were treated to freezies.

Wheatland elementary held their annual Terry Fox on Wednesday Sept. 9. The weather cooper-ated and they were able to do their laps around the track in the sunshine.

The Town of Strathmore engineer-ing department was surprised when they opened tenders for the bridge replacement work for George Free-man Trail.

The expected figure was near the $500,000 mark, but instead the low-est tender was closer to $750,000. The design contract had been award-ed to CIMA in August, and the hope was to complete the necessary re-pairs this fall.

Chuck Renkas, project coordina-tor, said he would feel more comfort-able getting an assessment done to see what the current condition of the bridge is, and if its life can be ex-tended instead of spending $750,000.

Renkas said an assessment would be free through CIMA Canada. They would do an inspection and provide a report as part of their existing con-tract with the town.

As soon as the canal is free of wa-ter, CIMA will be able to inspect and assess the condition of the bridge. Once completed, if repairs are need-

ed, work can be started quickly, po-tentially finishing three to six weeks later, with traffic disruptions while the work is being done.

Jesse Parker, Director of Engineer-ing and Operations, said staff recog-nize some surface work needs to be done, but don’t feel a whole bridge replacement is necessary.

The scope of work was to put in two new three metre metal culverts. For the time being an assessment will be done to determine what will be done next, whether it’s a delay or repairs. www.StrathmoreTimes.com

Alberta 4-H and UFA are once again presenting their annual Alumni Ser-vice Award, which began in 2008. The hope is for the award to remain con-sistent in the foreseeable future, and for the 75 year partnership between UFA and Alberta 4-H to remain strong.

The award’s significance is to rec-ognize noteworthy individuals from rural Alberta who have shown acts of leadership and volunteerism in ad-vancing their local communities by contributing much time and effort in 4-H and or other community activi-ties.

“UFA was really looking to support young entrepreneurs, youth, within agriculture and that was a big rea-son for us coming on board with this award, that was a big piece of it, was to look for future leaders within Al-berta and be able to support them in

their endeavours,” said Jessica Barrie, Marketing and Communication Spe-cialist of UFA Co-operative Limited.

To qualify as an applicant, the 4-H Alumni recipients must be newly nominated in 2011, and be between the ages of 20 and 35. They must also have pursued post-secondary educa-tion, returned to their rural roots, and have been a part of the 4-H communi-ty for at least two years. A $2,000 UFA gift certificate will be awarded to each of the five winning recipients. The deadline for applications is Nov. 30.

To benefit future applicants, the new guideline states that previously awarded recipients may not re-apply for the award. By doing so it has raised the odds for other individuals who wish to receive the award, ac-cording to Carmen Stone, Manager of Corporate Partnerships of 4-H Foun-dations of Alberta. Five recipients are awarded every year out of the antici-pated 15-30 applicants.

“Even if you have been out of 4-H for a couple of years, it’s recommend-ed you have someone nominate you and whatever you do, if you could highlight, and if people could fill in as much information as they can of what people have done in their community through leadership and through vol-unteerism, those would be great top-ics to touch on,” said Barrie.

All five winners will be announced sometime during the spring, accord-ing to Barrie. Around the same time, UFA will be having their annual gen-eral meeting and farm safety weeks.

Applications can be found at www.4h.ab.ca and can be sent via fax: (403)682-3784, email: [email protected] or mail: 4-H Foundation of Al-berta, R.R. 1, Westerose, Alberta T0C 2V0. For more information, please contact Jessica Barrie at (587) 580-8145 or [email protected], and Carmen Stone at (403) 869-3528 or [email protected].

An ongoing issue in society

Jessica altman Student’s Opinion

In our society today is it wrong for someone to stand up for themselves? Is it a bad thing to want to make a difference? There are pros and cons to how schools deal with the bullying issue. The schools act upon each situation differently.

From the presentations during bullying awareness week, they say to stand up to a bully either on our own or with a group of supportive friends. The question is why are kids suspended for doing so? In a self defence situation, both kids are suspended for a week. The bully knows what they’ve done wrong, but what about the victim? They stood up for their rights, felt they did something positive, but they’re being punished for doing so. Even if a kid gets involved and stands up to a bully for someone else, so they don’t get a beat down, they too are suspended although they did the right thing by helping a student that could not stand up and defend themselves

The ongoing question is, what triggers a bully? Is it because people have issues at home or life in general and they can’t find a proper release for their anger. How do they deal with their issues? Do they take it out on a person who looks weak and hopeless? Does making someone else feel bad, make them feel better about themselves? Bullying victims try to avoid the subject as much as possible to avoid confrontation and possibly humiliation. A lot of people avoid the topic of this powerful but damaging situation.

The schools can be intimidated by the parents of bullies as many are bullies themselves. Principals have been threatened with lawsuits, going to the school board or physically threatened. There is a no bullying policy and if that is the case, then that should be the policy. If this was adhered to and the bullies suspended or expelled, then we would not be having this discussion.

Burgers for a cause

Kevin SorenSon M.P., CrowfootParliamentary Report

Now that Parliament has reconvened in Ottawa, our Conservative government is unveiling for Ca-nadians our legislative priorities for the Autumn Session in the House of Commons. Our top prior-ity remains jobs and the performance of Canada’s economy. Canada is the only advanced nation that has more people working today than before the recession hit. We will maintain our low-tax plan to create jobs and economic growth – a plan that is working.

This fall, we will also move forward on our am-bitious trade agenda by reintroducing legislation to implement important free trade agreements that help open new markets for Canadian business-es and entrepreneurs. These will help Canada’s economic recovery and contribute to the nearly 600,000 net new jobs created since July 2009.

As your MP, I will have a large amount of work carrying out my parliamentary role as the Chair of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Public Safety and National Security. The Anti-Human Smuggling Bill (C-4) will be the first to be heard at our committee. I am looking forward to overseeing the testimony by witnesses on the strong measures we are proposing to protect our borders and prevent illegal entries into Canada.

Bill C-4 contains deterrents that will stop human smugglers from targeting our shores. We are tar-geting the ‘snakeheads’ (organizers), ship owners, captains of vessels, crews, and persons trying to queue-jump Canada’s immigration system.

Up next at our committee will be the legislation to eliminate the failed and costly long-gun registry. I am determined that both of these Bills receive thorough and expeditious hearings so they can be implemented without delay. These are two pieces

of legislation that will be directly ‘on my desk’ when they pass Second Reading. I know that there is strong support for these two Bills in our con-stituency, and all across Canada. My colleagues and I are prepared for extended hours, extra meetings – whatever it takes. The Opposition will no longer be able to waste Parliament’s time and taxpayer re-sources pretending to ‘study’ actions that the Gov-ernment of Canada could take, only to defeat them before they can be taken. The 41st Federal Election changed all that.

As I write this column, we are all anticipating the Official Visit to Canada of the Right Honourable David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United King-dom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

“The United Kingdom is one of Canada’s clos-est friends and allies,” said Prime Minister Stephen Harper when he announced that Prime Minister Cameron accepted the invitation to address a joint session of Parliament.

Again, the recent election demonstrated historic change in Canada politics. Now that ‘the dust has settled,’ it seems to me fitting and appropriate that during the first few months of a long overdue ma-jority Parliament in Ottawa, the British Prime Min-ister is the first to visit our House of Commons. Canada, like many other Commonwealth Nations, is steeped in the traditions of our British heritage. Great Britain has been the model and inspiration for many of the institutions, procedures and prac-tices in the way we govern ourselves. I hope ev-eryone has the opportunity to hear the greeting the Right Honourable David Cameron brings to Canada.

Parliamentary reconvenes after summer break

Letters to the editor

To the EditorI would like to express my appreciation to all Alber-

tans who cast a ballot in the Progressive Conservative leadership election on Sept. 17. While voter turnout was lower than some expected, the direction of voters was definitive. The subsequent endorsement by three of the candidates for front runner Gary Mar, further emphasizes the clear direction of Albertans with re-gard to leadership.

The PC Party’s constitutional requirement for a leader to be declared by winning 50 per cent plus one of participating voters’ means members are being asked to vote again on Oct. 1. As vote counts are not carried forward, the outcome will be decided by par-ticipants on Oct. 1. The outcome should not be taken for granted.

Alberta’s economic dependence on trade and access to foreign markets, as well as recent headlines ques-tioning the integrity of Alberta oil, highlight the need for strong and experienced leadership from our new Premier. Having served in portfolios of international and inter-governmental affairs, environment, health, education and community development, Gary Mar is ready to take the lead. The good work and strong re-lationships Gary has established internationally over the last three years as Alberta’s envoy to Washington will be important.

I encourage all Albertans to support Gary’s bid for leadership on Oct. 1 or at an advance poll on Sept. 27.

Complaints over the taste and odour of potable water in Gleichen may be solved for the first time next fall.

David Churchill, Manager of Trans-portation and Infrastructure for Wheat-land County, told council members at the Sept. 20 meeting he might have found a solution.

SHAC Ponder has been approved by council and meets water treatment specifications. Churchill asked to begin a test project with it. Previously there had been no products available to try to improve the situation caused by al-gae.

Algae have been an ongoing cause

of the water problems in Gleichen, and though it is safe, the odour and taste have residents bringing in their own water.

“The algae blooms that happen in the raw water reservoir is where the problem originates, and that’s been an ongoing problem for years. Part of the reason is that reservoir is quite a large surface area but not very deep, so hence the water warms up in the sum-mer,” said Gerry Van Ooostwaard, Pub-lic Works Superintendent for Wheat-land County.

He said when you have a deep body of water, the water never gets warm but with a shallow lake does get warm and is no different then a reservoir. The warmth causes algae to bloom, affect-

ing the water quality. The drinking water comes from the

reservoir and then goes into the water treatment plant. The filters can take all the bacteria out but can’t get rid of the smell and taste.

“It’s not like an instant overnight success. You’re supposed to treat your water with it, according to manufactur-ers, three times a year, spring, summer, and fall and over time it should have an impact on reducing that,” said Van Ooostwaard.

“The problem always comes later in the summer so it’s our intention to treat the water again in the spring, summer and fall next year, three times. By lat-er in the summer (we) hope that has some impact.”

The Strathmore #10 Royal Canadian Legion, the second oldest branch in Alberta, will celebrate 85 years since receiving their charter on Oct. 8.

The celebration will be held at the Legion, and will run from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. There will be drink specials, snack trays, a birthday cake, and enter-tainment throughout the day.

“We want to welcome the commu-nity to come and help us celebrate that day, because really without the com-munity’s help… that’s what our man-date is, is to serve the community and the seniors, and the ex-service per-sonnel,” said Legion President Jenny Schumann.

Previous to 1926 the Legion was known as the Great War Veterans’ As-sociation. When current members of the Legion worked on the expansion in 2004, they were surprised and hap-py to find historical records from the early 1920’s.

“Why they did it, we’re really not sure why… when we were taking down these walls and stuff and all of a sudden there was newspapers, and then these (cancelled cheques) were found throughout different parts of the building,” said Schumann.

There were cheques from 1924 to 1926 and enough 2-cent war tax stamps to go with every cheque that would have been written. There was also a beret, and newspapers in the walls.

Halloween is coming early to the Cheadle Lions Corn Maze. Kids of all ages are invited to head to the maze dressed in their best spooky costume to take part in the Halloween costume night Oct. 8. The kid’s event for the younger children will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. with costume judging at 5:30 p.m.

“It’s just for the little kids earlier so they can be in their costumes and run through the corn if they want. It’s open to everybody after that,” said Kevin Gibbons, with the Cheadle Lions.

The after-dark event for the kids of all ages will begin at 6 p.m. with judging at 7:30 p.m. There will be prizes for the best costume for kid’ nine years old and under, and another for kids 10 and up.

“The corn maze has been a great success thanks to the residents of Strathmore and area. We have seen two local schools come out and experience the fun of the maze. For a lot of kids I think it’s the first time they have been to a farm to see where their food is grown,” said Gibbons.

“It’s great to see little kids full of excitement run into the maze with their parents and grandparents.”

An adult must accompany all children attending the events. The maze will close at 10 p.m.

The Children’s Wish Foundation, Strathmore Chapter, will be hosting several charitable events with the in-tent to make more wishes become a reality. Collective efforts have been successful in the past, such as the most recent ‘Movie Under the Stars’ night that took place this past sum-mer. The Children’s Wish Foundation hopes to reach their set goals, with the anticipated Silent Auction, Jelly Bean Dance, and Wish Maker’s Walk for Wishes.

“We always hope to every year to raise enough money for one wish, and the average cost per wish is $10,000,” said Christie Anderson, the chairper-son behind the Strathmore Chapter’s events held this year.

The Silent Auction will be held from Sept. 29-Oct. 13 at the Chinook Cred-it Union. Everyone is encouraged to come inside to browse the many auc-tion items. The organization welcomes all acts of charity, whether it be bid-ding in the auction or participating in any of the three events. Cash do-nations (with cheques made payable) to the Children’s Wish Foundation and prize donations are very helpful to the organization as well.

The Jelly Bean Dance, for kids in Grade 6 and under, will take place on Friday, Oct. 14 at the Strathmore Cen-tennial Civic Centre. The dance begins at 6 p.m. and will end at 8:30 p.m.

Lastly, the main event, the Wishmak-er’s Walk for Wishes, a 1km or 5km fun run/walk will take place Saturday, Oct. 15 at Kinsmen Park. A minimum pledge of $25 is required to take part. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and the walk will begin at 9 a.m.

“It is just a lot of fun, they’re all fam-ily events, the Jelly Bean Dance, the Walk for Wishes, it’s a great way to get the family out and kids are encour-aged to bring their Halloween cos-tumes and wear those,” said Anderson.

Calling all bidders, dancers, walkers and runners! In choosing whose wish

should be made to come true, Anderson stated that the main office in Calgary makes the decision.

“They try to keep the funds kind of funnelled as local as possible, it is a Ca-nadian organization, the Children’s Wish Foundation, usually we have a family at every event that is local and that is either getting a wish granted or has had a wish granted,” said Anderson.

The organization cannot emphasize enough the need for contributions and par-ticipation in the events. The

only way the organization can be successful in reach-ing their goals is if people come out to bid, dance, run and walk.

“The kids who get their wishes granted are obvious-ly very deserving, it’s just a way to get out and have fun for a good cause,” said An-derson.

To find out more informa-tion about how someone can get involved or con-tribute to the organization, please contact Christie An-derson at [email protected], (403)934-8155, or visit www.childrenswish.ca.

Reno crash affects Strathmore residentShannon LecLairTimes Reporter

A terrible accident in Reno, Nevada on Sept. 16 made headlines all over the world, and one Strathmore man was there when it happened.

Robin Murray, a pilot for Westjet, has been going to the Reno Air Races since the early 80’s, and was one of the spec-tators of the crash, which resulted in 11 people being killed as of Sept. 23.

“Jimmy Leeward, the pilot who died in the crash, was flying a highly modi-fied P51 Mustang called the ‘Galloping Ghost’. He was coming around the last pylon and then you could see some-thing was wrong, he started wobbling and pitching up,” said Murray. “Then he turned and was heading out over the crowd which is very unusual, there is a line called the ‘dead zone’ designed to keep the airplanes a safe distance from the crowd and the pilots normally never cross it. So when he did cross it I knew there was something seriously wrong.

“He was climbing out over the crowd approximately 300 to 400 feet above us and I thought he was going to miss

everything and just keep going behind us. Then the airplane just started rolling to the left and then rolled inverted, up-side down, and then basically just come straight down, right into the crowd.”

The aircraft crashed into the box seats just forward of the grandstand in a near vertical attitude, said Murray, but was slightly pointed toward the ramp which was a good thing because the shrapnel blew out towards the ramp instead of into the crowd. There has been specu-lation that a piece of the tail, called a trim tab, came off and could possibly be the cause of the crash.

“I was in the bleachers, but the next section over, about 150 feet away from where it hit. For a second it was coming at me, and I thought to myself there is no where to go, then it started to roll a little more to the left as it came in, and missed me. The whole thing happened in seconds but seemed like it took five minutes for it to crash,” said Murray.

“There was a very loud smacking sound at impact and then it sounded like tin cans hitting the ground as piec-es of the aircraft slid across the ramp. The aircraft completely disintegrated, there was nothing left, only pieces the

size of my hand and dust. What was left of the engine flew about 300 ft away out on to the ramp. Luckily there was no fire but I could smell racing fuel. Af-ter that it was pretty much mayhem. I think everybody was just in shock at what had just happened. The scene af-terwards is something I’ll never forget and never want to see again. I’ve seen crashes there before and pilots have died but never has a spectator been in-jured or killed to my knowledge.

“I’ve been going to those races since 1983 … I try to go every year, and have only missed a few years. It is normally a really good time as there is the rac-ing along with other air show acts. I’m a pilot too and I love those airplanes. It’s kind of sad to see something you love cause that much injury, death and damage.”

Leeward, 74, had been racing planes since the mid-seventies, and the Gal-loping Ghost, a P51 Mustang had been used in races since 1946. The Ghost had been modified for racing, and could fly at speeds close to 500 mph. Leeward and the Ghost had the longest racing career of any other active pilot or air-craft before the tragedy occurred.

‘Empowering a Nation through Ed-ucation’ was the theme of Old Sun Community College’s, OSCC, three-day celebration of their 40th Anniver-sary from Sept. 19 - 21.

Monday morning’s celebration be-gan with a tradition Tipi Transfer Ceremony and a Feast enjoyed by all who came out to participate. After the Feast, officials held their Opening Ceremonies with welcoming remarks by Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier and Pres-ident of OSCC, Amelia Clark.

This year Old Sun Community Col-lege celebrated its 40th year of suc-cess as an adult learning institute on the Siksika Nation. This learning in-stitution has played an integral role amongst Siksika Nation members in helping them to reach their educa-tional goals through lifelong learning. In addition, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the Siksika Nation suc-cessfully administering the Federal Post-Secondary Student Support Pro-gram fund. These two anniversaries mark monumental advances in the area of education amongst the people of the Siksika Nation and are an im-portant part of their history.

Guests were provided with opportu-nities to go on tours of OSCC and learn about the history of the residential school as well as a history of the vari-ous initiatives that have evolved over the years. A Trade Fair and historical displays were set up in the basement of the college for people to browse and purchase memorabilia from the anniversary. Local artists (and past

students) like Cody Wolfleg and Darcy Lowhorn were given the opportunity to show off their spectacular art and they were humble about their accom-plishments.

Cheryl Solway, who has been the Education Counsellor for the past 20 years said they “were proud of the 20 year Anniversary which officially took place on April 1 when OSCC took over funding from Indian Affairs in 1991.”

Truly there have been many things to celebrate both for the Community of Siksika and those who have partici-pated in the College.

Lesley Stimson jokingly said that she had worked as “official office gopher” for 29 years. She originally started as the librarian and retired in 2006. Stimson said that if she had to pick, one overall thing that she learned while employed at the college was ‘patience’, both on her part and on the part of all those she came in contact with. She thoroughly enjoyed all her years at the College and was honoured to come and join in the cel-ebrations over the three-day event.

Many students from the past and present along with faculty enjoyed the reunion aspect of the event, sharing their accomplishments over the years.

Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier summed up the event by saying that OSCC “has helped numerous citizens of Sik-sika to further their education and for many has been an integral stepping stone. In the 40 years since its incep-tion, OSCC has grown remarkably and has to be one of the best kept secrets in our local municipalities. I am very proud of this institution and all it stands for.”

The Strathmore 4-H Club has a new project to offer to its members. In addition to the photography and scrapbooking activities currently available, 4-H members will also have the option of taking part in the performing arts program.

“This year we’re going to intro-duce the performing arts which will include everything from ana-lyzing character traits to trips to Rosebud theatre to look at costume designing, and possibly puppetry,” said Beverly Swalwell, who will be teaching the program.

She said one thing that is going to make it very exciting for the kids is they are going to be bringing in guest speakers from Strathmore Theatre Players, and hopefully from Rosebud and Calgary theatre groups. Though 4-H was at REVS, performing arts wasn’t listed as an option because it only recently be-came finalized.

Swalwell used to direct for cen-tral Alberta theatre years ago and her kids have always been inter-ested in drama. She said when the club is looking to attract new mem-bers they need to look at things that aren’t being offered anywhere

else. “Most people think 4-H is just

about animals and if you don’t own a cow then you can’t join 4-H,” said Swalwell.

In order to participate in one of the projects, participants must be a member of 4-H. The club fee is ap-proximately $80 for the year. The cost of the project would be an ex-tra $15 to $20.

The club is looking at hosting a meeting for the project on the sec-ond and fourth Monday nights of the month.

This season’s first club meeting will be held in the Chuck Mercer room at the Civic Centre on Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Interested parties will be able to register and find out more about 4-H and the projects they have available.

“I’d love to have a minimum of eight to 10 kids to work with, just in our project,” she said.

Members have to be nine by January 1 in order to join 4-H, and they can stay through even after high school.

For more information about the club, contact Yvonne Anderson at 403-934-1986. She is the overall club leader of all of the projects.

Come Cheer on Your Strathmore Wheatland Kings!AWAY GAMES: Friday, September 30 • 8:30 pm Medicine Hat; Sunday, October 9 • 4:00 pm Coaldale

Mario Prusina Times Reporter

After a tough loss to open the 2011-2012 campaign, the Wheatland Kings had to forget about the past and focus on the future.

The local Junior B team did exactly that when they won a thrilling 4-3 over-time game against the Coaldale Cop-perhead on Sept. 24 at the Strathmore Family Centre, a mere 24-hours after a lopsided 6-2 loss in Didsbury against the Mountainview Colts.

The Kings were battling the Colts neck-neck, before officiating changed the complexion of the game, and the Colts responded with four powerplay goals en route to the win. Wheatland used the motivation of playing their home opener next night to earn a split in their open-ing weekend.

“It was exciting, but it wasn’t quite the game that we would have liked to play, but (we’ll take it),” said head coach Doug Murphy after the home opener. “It’s com-ing together – you can see the speed, you can see the skill and the character hanging on until the end.

“(You’re) seeing some of the matu-rity. There are guys here going into their fourth season and we’ve been in overtime before and we haven’t always been on the right end of it. Now, with the talent we’ve got and the maturity, these one-goal and tied games are not as daunting as they used to be.

“Two years ago (this game would have been), at best a tie but more likely a loss.”

Instead, veteran defenceman Graham Douglas joined the rush and unleashed a slapshot that found its way to the back of the net.

“It feels pretty good, especially the home opener,” said Hussar native Doug-las after the game. “I wanted to get in the

zone and I thought, ‘take the shot’ and it went in.”

While the Kings needed overtime to secure the two points, the game wouldn’t have gone past the third period if not for the outstanding goaltending of Richie Hubbell.

The second year King made a handful of jaw-dropping saves to secure the win.

“Richie stole that one for us,” said Mur-phy. “He was absolutely outstanding to-night and he gives us full value (every time he’s on the ice).”

Despite the barrage of shots against, the goaltender relished the role of stop-ping Coaldale.

“I felt the adrenaline from the home opener kind of helped pump me up for the game to play better,” said Hubbell. “The defence played really good – they made (them take) all the shots from the point so I could see them. There was not a lot of traffic and the defence made my life easier.”

However, things were a little more hec-tic on Friday night. The team was taken off of their game by shady officiating.

“We had a dirty hit (against) our team – their guy wrecked our guy from be-hind, really dirty,” said Hubbell. “Then after, the guy shot the puck and I made the save, and their guy tackled me into the net. The puck never went in the net until after the whistle went, but he called it a goal.

“That lead to a line-brawl, which lead our whole team to lose its focus. That was the turning point and it went down-hill from there.”

Despite the loss, the Kings turned thing around in time for the home opener.

The team will now head to Medicine Hat on Sept. 30 to tangle with the Cubs, before hosting the High River Flyers Oct. 1 at the Strathmore Family Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.

Kings split weekend opener

Novice and atom level players filled the ice at the Family Centre, trying out for a spot on their respec-tive teams. The weekend began with goalie tryouts on Sept. 23 and the rest of the weekend saw ap-proximately 100 goalies and players showing off their skills.

Strathmore and area residents can look for-ward to one more rodeo in the area this year. On Oct. 1 and 2, the Strath-more and District High School Rodeo will be at the Agricultural Society rodeo grounds hosting a rodeo to make up for the loss of the annual rodeo in May.

Concerns arose this past May about horses contracting the disease equine neurological her-pes virus, EHV-1, which-saw rodeos all over the province being shut down.

Because of last May’s issues, organizers have decided there will be two rodeos this year.

The first rodeo for the kids took place on the last weekend of August and there will be one more over the weekend before the kids break for the winter.

“It’s free admission. With the help of the sponsors and the vol-unteers we’ve raised enough money that we won’t have to charge ad-mission,” said Strathmore and District High School Rodeo Association Presi-dent Dan Dowler.

“Everybody is wel-come to come and take in some of the High School Rodeo kids and there’s some pretty impressive talent in our district, so it should be some pretty good rodeo.”

People who attend can look forward to see-ing their favourite events from calf roping to saddle bronc and much more.

Final Strathmore rodeo of the season

After losing their season opener 6-2 to the Mountain-view Colts, the Wheatland Kings rebounded to defeat the Coaldale Copperheads 4-3 in overtime on Sept. 24 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

The senior Spartans had two games last week, the first at home against the Chestermere Cowboys. This was the first home game of the season for the team. Wearing their new blue jerseys they were able to pick up their first win of the year. The game started off slow for the Spartans, as at one point the Chestermere Cowboys had a 14-3 lead. The second half of the game was owned by the Spartans with running back Dakota Barrie racking up over 100 yards thanks to strong play from the offensive line. Dakota was run-ning like he was on a mission, scoring his first touchdown this year. What he didn’t know was that he woke up an offensive machine.

The offensive line was able to open up huge holes in the second half and the Spartans offense took the lead be-cause of a strong running game. They cruised in the second half, to win the game 41-14. Thanks also to the strong defense that secured the win with an interception for a touchdown by half back David Kuljanin.

The second game of the week for the senior team was held on the turf surface of Shouldice field in Calgary. The Spartans played against the Ernest Manning Gryphons. The Gryphons moved the ball down the field on the Spartans, who were still able to keep

it close thanks to a big kickoff return by James Nakamura. It was a close game with the first half closed out by a touchdown pass to slot back David Kuljanin. The Gryphons came out of half time taking a big lead. The last play of the game was a touchdown pass; Cory Campbell connected with wide receiver James Giancola for a fi-nal score of 48-20. It was a much bet-ter game than the scoreboard showed. Hopefully all of the hard work paid off for the Spartans away game against the Burt Church Chargers in Airdrie on Sept. 27. Result unavailable as of press time.

The Peewee Spartans were in action Saturday in Wetaskiwin to face the Wildcats. It was a good game for both teams.

“They were the nicest team we have played,” said trainer Lori Klauck. “The coaches, the parents, the kids all seemed to be of a similar mind set of what the Strathmore organization rep-resents.”

The coaches were happy for the op-portunity to spread the ball around. The five players scoring the touch-downs were Austin Wasut, Kobe Hol-loway, Cooper Fargey, Riley Bahan and Ethan Monaghan.

The Peewees have a bye week giv-ing them an opportunity to rest up and build on their skills in preparation for their Oct. 8th game against the Red Deer Hornets in Red Deer.

Local Access Franchise Fee on Local Gas Billings

Please be advised that the Village of Rockyford is proposing to increase the local access fee which is charged to ATCO Gas for use of Mu-nicipal lands for its gas lines effective January 01, 2012. The municipal franchise fee is recov-ered by ATCO Gas from its customers as the lo-cal access fee on gas billings from all custom-ers that receive gas services in the Village of Rockyford.

The current franchise fee is set at 29% of ATCO Gas delivery revenues and will increase to 30% effective January 1, 2012. For an average residential customer using a 120GJ/year this will result in an average monthly increase of approximately $0.32. For the average resident your total annual franchise fee will be approxi-mately $114.20 per year.

Questions or concerns should be directed to Lois L. Mountjoy, Administrator, Village of Rockyford By November 15, 2011.

It was yet another disappointing game for our bantam football team. The Spartans played against the Spring-bank Phoenix at home on Saturday, los-ing 39-0.

Coach Rob Musselman made some position changes late in the game, re-sulting in some forward movement for

the Strathmore offence. The defense was strong in the second half against Springbank’s backup offence, not al-lowing any points in the second half. Hopefully next week the bantam team can turn their second half into a full game performance. It was noted by the coaches and parents that the players on this team have a lot of heart, since they continue to come out to practice in spite of a winless season.

Bantam Spartans remain winless

The Spartans ban-tam football team was up against Springbank on Sept. 24. it was a tough game and due to a lack of extra players to help give some down time, the ban-tam Spartans didn’t fare to well, ending the game at 39-0.
