SpringFest is an event most members of the community look forward to when the nice weather hits.

This year, though, people were disappoint-ed to find out that it had been cancelled May 29 due to the weather forecast for snow.

The Chamber of Commerce executive decided to cancel the event, rather than re-schedule it.

“To reschedule it for another day isn’t an easy thing, especially when the town has events going throughout the summer, so there really isn’t a day unless we move it to a different venue,” said Mona Kado, who is on the Chamber of Commerce Board of Di-rectors.

“The decision was that we could hold it, but would anybody actually show up if it snows?”

The problem with finding another venue is that the chamber would be trying to fit SpringFest in between other events going on, leading up to July 1. Indoor locations were looked at but are all booked. This is the first time SpringFest has been cancelled. The chamber is looking into having an alternate place for next year, an indoor location, so it doesn’t have to be cancelled again.

“It’s really disappointing because we had put a lot of work and planning into it, and it is one of the main town events that every-body looks forward to, but we had to make the call whether to hold it or not,” said Kado. Many other events around town were also cancelled due to the weather. SpringFest was one of the most anticipated.

On May 19, students at Trinity Lu-theran Christian Academy, T.L.C.A, started an art project which will last a lifetime.

The kids took part in the Clay for Kids project creating clay designs, which will be put together in a sev-en-by-seven-foot mural at the front entrance of the school. The entire school participated. The use of the T shape of the cross and doves were sort of a template for the students.

“We wanted something new, or different and it might be good for the whole school to look back at it,” said Monica Major, the Art teacher and kindergarten teacher.

“The theme the students had to follow was students, parents, teach-ers and God because they are the things that make up the school,” said Major.

The idea was also to show the gift sthey bring, miracles, blessings and love.

On June 9, the students will paint their projects, and on June 11 they will be put the mural together. The students will not be involved in put-ting the mural on the wall.

Westmount School had their annual Western Day on May 28. Due to the weath-er, students weren’t able to go outside for their breakfast so instead they were served

in the school. LandMark Feeds donated the sausage and Sobeys donated every-thing else except the juice boxes, which the school bought. Parents volunteered their time to help serve breakfast.

Students and staff dressed up in their best western garb as a way to show and

celebrate their western heritage. The entertainment included the Wran-

glers, a group of line dancers from Cal-gary, the Piaha family, and the Keister family fiddlers. There was also supposed to be a western carnival, which had to be cancelled due to the weather.

Students at Westmount elementary kicked off their Western Day with a

pancake breakfast, served by parent volunteers, followed by an afternoon

of entertainment. Due to cold weather the pancakes

were served inside.

The Keister Family Fiddlers preformed at Westmount elementary

on may 28 as part of their Western Day celebrations. Their mother

Sherry accompanies them on the guitar, and their father Loren

manages the sound and their gigs. From the far left: Kate, Claire, Sherry,

Be Prepared If Interest Rates Rise

The Bank of Canada might increase its benchmark lending rate in the second half of 2010. If that happens, should you re-evaluate the bond holdings in your portfolio?

If interest rates rise, the value of your existing bonds is likely to go down. Investors won’t pay you full price for your bonds when they can get newly issued ones that offer higher interest rates.

So what steps should you take? You may not have to rush into anything, especially if you plan to hold your bonds until maturity. Unless the bond issuer defaults, you’ll collect regular interest payments and get the face value back when your bond matures. Secondly, even if short-term rates rise, there’s no guarantee the long-term rates will rise as well.

But if you want to be more proactive, you could build a “ladder” of bonds of varying maturities. When market rates are low, you’ll have your long-term bonds, which typically pay higher rates, working for you. And when market rates increase, you can use the proceeds from your maturing short-term bonds to purchase new ones issued at the higher rates.

Be aware of changes in interest rates, but don’t overreact to them. By making the right long-term moves with your bond portfolio, you can make progress toward your financial goals today - and tomorrow.

This year the amount of graduating students from Standard School jumped from nine to 28. Standard, Rosebud, Redland, Rockyford, Gleichen, Siksika, and Hussar joined together this year making this the biggest graduating class. “It was just longer but that was intended because of the size,” said Jennifer Geeraert from Standard School. The theme the students chose this year was ‘Remember Yesterday, Live for Today, Dream for Tomorrow.’Back, from left: Dillon Newitt, Gavin Melcher, Kai Lauridsen, Garrett Jensen, Zander Hamm, Avery Kathol, Shayne MacMullen, Jesse Schadlich. Lemonade stands are a favourite way for kids to make spending money in the summer, but for 10-year-old Tanya Shpyth, the money isn’t for her.

Tanya plans to run a Kool-Aid stand all summer in an effort to raise money for her school, Brentwood Elementary.

“Me and my friends were just sitting around talk-ing one day at recess and we thought because of budget cutbacks we might just start a Kool-Aid stand and we had all these other cool, weird ideas that can help raise money for our school,” said Tanya.

She is the first out of her friends to have started on one of the ideas they had tossed around, but has no doubt the others will start their own booths or start something else.

She has only been out once so far this year, but summer is just beginning. Her 7-year-old brother Travis helps her set everything up and is working with her. Even Taylor, Tanya’s older sister, helps out a little, giving the younger ones a chance to go take a break and cool off.

All of he public school divisions have suffered huge cutbacks, and Tanya’s mother, Tammy has writ-ten letters to the MLA and other people involved in

the cutbacks.“When Tanya came up with this idea, I thought

you know what, sometimes little voices are heard the loudest,” said Tammy.

“I thought, here’s a little girl who’s willing to spend her summer, what she can, raising money for her school and I thought maybe this will get atten-tion.”

Tanya sits in front of her house for hours deter-mined to sell as much Kool-Aid as she can before school starts again in the fall.

“She plans to do it all summer, and she will. She’s motivated like that,” said Tammy.

“I’m really happy that I’m doing something for my school,” said Tanya.

She will have her Kool-Aid stand set up on the weekends, and as much as possible during the sum-mer.

There are signs up saying the money is being raised for Brentwood school. You can find Tanya and her brother at 72 Cambria Rd.

The Wheatland Women’s Busi-ness meeting held May 11 was very inspiring as we listened to our Guest Speaker: Amelia Crow-foot Clark, President, Old Sun Community College. What an in-spirational life story she shared with us. She also informed us of the various programs being of-fered at Old Sun College and the renovations that are happening to modernize the College. Ten students from Strathmore high school spent a week in Washington last month, April 25 to 30.

The students who went on the trip were partnered with the Asper Foundation, located in Winnipeg, and the Calgary Jew-ish Community Council. Both the Foundation and the Council focus on teaching students the impor-tance of human rights and the impact of the Holocaust. This was the third year that SHS has par-ticipated in the program and only grade 10 students can be nomi-nated by their teachers.

“Students are nominated not based on their grades, they just have to be a great student at SHS and have an interest in learning about Human Rights and the Ho-locaust. Students who participate are interested in the program and are willing to make the commit-ment,” said Tricia Bezzeg who has coordinated the program at SHS.

After the students are nominat-ed they are given an information package and have the chance to say yes or no to the opportunity. Those who did choose to take part had to attend 10 educational sessions in Calgary over a number of weeks, which included listen-ing to guest speakers, Holocaust survivors and generally learning about the holocaust and human rights. They also had to fulfill the requirement of 25 hours commu-

nity service, read three novels, and are just now completing their final projects.

“All this work is done outside of class time, and for the students who did participate it’s an invalu-able learning experience,” said Bezzeg.

“It was a lot of work, but worth it,” said Krista Stout, one of the students who went on the trip.

The Asper Foundation and the Calgary Jewish Community Coun-cil paid half the cost of the trip, with parents and students pay-ing the other half. The foundation sends various groups of students from across Canada to Washing-ton over a five week period. The SHS group visited the Holocaust Museum, the Museum of Natural History and many other places of interest.

Here is what the SHS students had to say about their trip:

Krista Stout thought the White House was smaller than TV de-picts it, but the trip was fun and backed up what they had learned previous to going.

“The Holocaust museum was really sad, like it was really cool to see all of the different things. There was a room full of thou-sands of shoes and that was re-ally sad because it showed how many people really died,” said Stout.

For student Andrew Vooys the Museum of Natural History was his favourite spot.

“If you have the chance to go, I’d say to go,” said Vooys. “It was

a really good trip. Two in the morning is not a fun time to wake up to get on an airplane but the scenery down there was great.”

“I was interested in the pro-gram, I wanted to learn more about the Holocaust, my grand-father was in World War II so I wanted to learn more about it,” said Jacob Stephens another stu-dent involved in the program.

“One day I hope they will get a chance to travel, to maybe go back to Washington D.C. because it is such great city that has so much to offer, it’s a safe place to be, and they get to see so much. The kids only had the chance to see a small sampling of what Washington has to offer because to read every article, to see every artifact in a week is next to im-possible,” said Bezzeg.

The entire experience was cele-brated on May 13 as the students received their memorandums and graduated from the Asper Foun-dation.

Do dogs get dry skin like people do?

Yes they sure can. Some signs your pet may have dry skin is if he is constantly scratching, biting or licking his fur. If this behavior continues for an extended amount of time consult your veterinarian to ensure there is no underlying condition. There are things you can do to help your pet such as not bathing him too often. Water can dry out the skin and make it worse. When you do bathe him use a dog shampoo containing oatmeal. It soothes the skin very nicely. Brush your pet often to remove dead hair and dander. Talk to your veterinarian about their food. Quality food contains the proper oils to maintain a healthy, flake free coat. If you dog is visiting his groomer while he is itchy, be sure to mention this to your groomer so they can use the proper products.

To the EditorOver and over, I hear that we need more hous-

ing choices for seniors. Then with the same breath I am being told “but I do not want a seniors’ group home in my neighborhood”. It will lower the prop-erty value, create traffic issues and better yet, what if someone was to get out and molest a child!

Oh, who would say such things? Sad but true, this is the attitude that is shown towards our most ven-erable population, Elders in the final years of their lives!

They have little time left and what do we do? Ship them off to live among strangers. Their lives con-trolled by well-meaning professionals in an institu-tional environment and with what results? The three plagues which account for the bulk of suffering among our Elders; Loneliness, Boredom and Help-lessness.

Being a NIMBY or “Not In My Back Yard” attitude has got to change.

Our elders deserve ... A life worth living. Creat-ing a sense of “belonging” that is truly preventative medicine. It is very clear to me that seniors are an integral part of our society.

We need to break down the barriers and raise awareness about Seniors Housing. A small group of seniors in a residential home allows seniors to have a better connection with the community, including young people and helps prevent isolation. There is more opportunity for spontaneity and relation-

ships flourish. Participation in household activities and meal preparations give meaning and purpose to each day.

We will ALL be ‘old’ someday and where will you be living? Do you want to be restricted to the down-town sector of Strathmore or be moved into a large over-crowed facility?

Why not allow a seniors home on the edge of the golf course or along a green space in residential ar-eas? Limited activity or declining health from the ag-ing process does not mean our Elders have any less delight in watching activities such as children play-ing, golfing or nature.

The Demographic Planning Commission heard that “Alberta communities need to provide safe, open and inclusive environments for seniors and must work towards breaking down ageist attitudes” and “Future seniors will increasingly refuse to let age define them and resist stereotypes, attitudes and ser-vices that restrict their choices. “

The number of seniors in Alberta is expected to increase by more than 40 percent in the next decade, to about 550,000 seniors.

The Town of Strathmore, developers, builders and the community need to prepare for a larger senior population.

Are you a NIMBY? You may not be a senior yet ... BUT YOU WILL BE SOMEDAY!

D. WakelamStrathmore

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report

Member of Parliament Kevin Sorenson, Chair of the House of Commons Special Committee on Canada’s Mission in Afghanistan delivered the following Members’ Statement in the House of Com-mons May 27:

“Mr. Speaker, Canadians can be proud of the bravery shown and the sacrifices made by Canada’s

military personnel in Afghanistan. The recent vicious attack on the main NATO base reminds us that our men and women in uniform, in all capacities, face constant danger.

“We are all sad to learn of the 146th Canadian soldier to die in Afghanistan since 2002.

“As chair of the foreign affairs committee and chair of the special Afghan committee, I have presided over many meetings, hearing evi-dence of our performance in Af-ghanistan.

“Canadians should know that our mission has many successes. Our troops are working hard. Whether under attack or feeling the pain of war, our troops are not intimidated and they persevere in spite of difficult surroundings. Our troops will say that they have helped improve the lives of count-less Afghans.

“Canadians should be proud of the bravery shown, and the sacri-fices made by our men and women serving in Afghanistan.”

Concert in the Park.... Gym?The Concert in the Park was held in a different fashion this year. Due to the rain and chilly weather the BBQ was held under the awning of Strathmore High School, and the concert itself took place in the gym. Parents from Holy Cross Collegiate sold baked goods to help raise money for the band. money raised from the BBQ sale went towards covering the rental of the Civic Centre and transportation from music monday, which took place may 3. The snow didn’t stop Trin-ity Lutheran Christian Acad-emy, T.L.C.A, from holding a BBQ and yard sale on May 29.

The school hosted the BBQ and yard sale as a way to raise money for the Clay for Kids project, and any extra will go into the general school fund for any future projects.

“It did fairly well consid-ering the weather,” said Sara

Renkas, secretary for T.L.C.AThe school managed to

raise $800 despite the weath-er, and plans to hold another yard sale on June 5 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Items being sold include clothing, toys, and household items.

“We had mostly parents do-nate items from their homes, their friends or through word of mouth,” said Lynn Des-biens, one of the parents who helped with the event.

There were hamburgers and hotdogs sold for $3, and

included a juice box, and for anyone who wanted to add cheese it was an extra .50 cents. There will not be a BBQ on June 5, but the kids will be selling popcorn again for $1 a bag. The Grade Five and Six students are volun-teering an hour of their time to come help as part of their community service projects.

There were six door priz-es donated by Home Hard-ware, Rocky’s Bakery, Shop-pers Drug Mart, Strathmore Station, the Roadhouse and

Walmart. “We had support from oth-

er businesses in Strathmore as well, and we appreciate this,” said Lisa Turner, the main coordinator of the sale. Originally the fundraiser was to be held only on May 29 but with all the items left over the school decided to give it one more shot to try to sell ev-erything. Any items left over from the second sale will be donated to Rebecca Powers who is opening a United Faith Thrift Store in Calgary soon.

Tanning is a natural process. Your body is biologically designed to produce melanin, which darkens the skin and is a natural free-radical scavenger. By increasing pigmentation a tan is your body’s natural way of protecting you from sunburn; for most people it can be the equivalent of an SPF 4. Sunburns are a totally different process. A sunburn is an injury; the red colour actually is increased blood flow, which is sent to the skin to help your body repair the damage done by overexposure to ultraviolet light.Never Sunburn!

An information session and open house was held on May 27 at Trinity Lu-theran Christian Academy, T.L.C.A. The night was meant for prospective par-

ents to come in and have a tour of the school, meet the principal and some of the teachers. Principal Harold Warr doesn’t know what to expect this year in terms of students registering.

“It’s kind of hard because all we really have is last year

to go by,” said Warr. T.L.C.A has been slowly

growing in the two years it’s been in existence. On the first day of their first year there were 57 students, and at the end of the year the school was at 67. At the be-ginning of this school year

there were 102 students, and currently there are 91 due to a few families mov-ing away so “anything over 91 will be a success,” said Warr.

Registration will be open until the first day of classes in the fall.

Summer’s almost here, but there’s still plenty happening at the Gleichen Rec-reation Complex. Congratulations to Gleichen Fire Department on another successful Mother’s Day Breakfast held on May 9. A good crowd turning out for some good food served by some of the community’s finest.

Those coming by the rec-plex will no-

tice some big changes underway in the arena, as we undergo a major renovation to the playing surface. A new concrete surface, new boards and glass will pro-vide teams with an improved rink while also allowing us to provide a complete year round facility for the community. Stop by during the summer and watch the changes unfold.

We will be hosting a community ga-rage sale June 12, running from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call the arena at 403-734-3059 to

find out more. Canada Day will be a fun one at the

rec-plex this year with numerous events scheduled including the RCMP slow-pitch tournament, old-timers baseball games, kids games, live entertainment and fireworks.

Watch for further information in the next couple of weeks. Anyone willing to assist in community workbees at the local ball diamonds, please call 403-734-3059 to find out dates and times.

Wheatland Elementary school recently chose a new associate principal. Michelle Rushford was the successful candidate who was given the posi-tion. Rushford has been a Grade Six teacher since the inception of Wheat-land Elementary School.

Former associate princi-pal M. Trachsel is retiring in June after 37 years of teaching.

“She is on the admin-istration team for Wheat-land Elementary and she will be providing sup-port,” said principal Kevin Lane.

“It’s exciting for me because I’ve been at this school since it started as an elementary school,” said Rushford.

Applicants for the posi-tion had to submit their resume and a paper out-lining their philosophy of educational leadership.

Rushford has been

teaching Grade Six stu-dents since leaving Glei-chen where she began her career in 1989. She had been taking a masters program specializing in Education Leadership at the University of Calgary, U of C, before taking a break to raise her family.

“I had considered ad-ministration a long time ago, but I took a hiatus for a long time to have a family, and now things are kind of coming full circle,” said Rushford.

This past school year she has been teaching both Grade Four and Grade Six students and said her teaching load is going to stay similar to what she’s had this year.

“I certainly didn’t want to come out of the class-room, that’s the best part about being a teacher and I’m glad I won’t lose that.”

Rushford will be going back to the U of C starting in the summer to restart and finish her masters program.

New associate principal named

strathmore bviDo young adults find this com-

munity attractive? Does Strath-more have a business- friendly Council? Do business and educa-tion organizations work together to provide timely and appropriate training opportunities?

Following the successful Busi-ness Vitality Initiative (BVI) as-sessment meeting held in late April, Strathmore residents are

poised to find out how their com-munity ranked in business and community attractiveness.

“The BVI assessment process really allowed people to take an in-depth look at what we do well and where we could do bet-ter,” says Jennifer Brooks, Com-munity Economic Development Officer with Community Futures Wild Rose. “Along with gather-ing perceptions of Strathmore,

the session asked folks to rank the community in areas such as education and training, innova-tion, leadership teamwork and networking, role of government, infrastructure, access to capital and funding opportunities, mar-keting, among others.”

The results will be released at an open public meeting on June 9 at 7:00 pm at the civic cen-tre. Everyone is invited to attend.

Elvis and Neil Diamond made a guest appearance at the Legion on the 29. Tickets sold for $30 and were sold out within a matter of weeks after placing an announcement about the show. The Legion Ways and Means Committee put on the show, finding two imper-

sonators through DNI Entertainment in Calgary.

“We try to get at least one show a year, sometimes one in the spring and one in the fall,” said Jenny Schumann acting president of the Strathmore Branch. The audience had the chance to enjoy cocktails followed by a dinner of prime rib and chicken cordon bleu. Duane Smith, owner of Siding 16 Café,

catered the event. “$30 is well worth the enter-

tainment you’re getting and, that includes the two entertainers and the meal,” said Schumann.

The impersonators put on three shows for the night. The first was just Neil Diamond, then it was Elvis and for the last show it was both Elvis and Neil.

Christopher Hanson, who portrayed Diamond, has been in the business for 20 years, and Will Reeb, Elvis, began his career in 1975 as an impersonator. The two men work a lot of shows to-gether and both live in Cal-gary.

There were 120 tickets sold to the event, and the room was packed with people en-joying the tribute to two musi-cal legends.

The Wheatland Women Business Group donated stuffed animals to the Strathmore Regional Victim Services So-ciety for the second year in a row. The stuffed toys are meant to give comfort in a time of need. The group supports dif-ferent organizations throughout the com-munity.

“You never know when you’re going to be the one Victim Services has to help. This is one we like to support because they do a lot of good in the community,” said Roseanne deBeaudrap, Communica-tions Liaison for the group and owner of Roseanne’s Essential Massage. There are 36 members in the group and they sup-port different initiatives around town.

Victim Services has been available for 13 years. Originally it was a phone cri-sis support, and has since evolved. The Strathmore office is located at the RCMP detachment, and they also serve Glei-chen and Chestermere.

The stuffed toys are mainly for chil-dren. For adults there are quilts given out. Occasionally, though, an adult will take comfort in a stuffed animal.

“Some kind of a little bit of magic can help people in different spots,” said Les-ley Hering, Assistant Coordinator of Vic-tim services.

There are two paid employees with Victim Services, and there are 10 volun-teer advocates. All volunteers are given extensive training in things such as do-mestic violence, sexual assault, suicides, next of kin notification and motor vehi-cle collision. Volunteers are on an on-call basis, and are expected to commit to two years.

“At the time of a crisis, is when we do most of our stuff,” said Hering. Victim services also help with court appoint-ments, court preparations and even do court accompaniment. There is an appli-cation which victim services can provide

for financial compensation for victims of violent crimes.

“We know about a lot of the services in town, so if you need something we can point you in the right direction,” said Hering.

They are a support system to those who are in a time of need, and 95 per cent of the referrals they receive are from the RCMP. Victim Services are always looking for more volunteers. All appli-cants must be an adult with a vehicle and go through an enhanced security check and a criminal reference check.

Victim Services receive donation

The Wheatland Women Business Group collects and then donates toys to Victim Services. it is just one thing in town the group likes to help out when they can. Roseanne deBe-audrap (left) from the Wheatland Women Business Group and Lesley Hering from victim services.

The fourth annual Red Neck Rumble Lacrosse Tournament took place May 27 to 29 at the Strath-more Family Centre.

“It was an excellent weekend, other than the weather a little bit, but luckily we were in-doors,” said referee Mar-lon Habing. Habing has been a referee for the Red Neck Rumble for the past four years. The Tyke divi-sion didn’t keep score be-cause they are still in train-

ing mode, so all the Tyke teams received first place awards.

For all the other divi-sions, there were first and second place awards handed out.

“The tournament went really, really well, was re-ally successful. We had lots of compliments on how well our refereeing is and how well scheduled we were,” said Carey Semi-nuk, one of the organizers of the Rumble.

The tournament fea-tured teams from Red Deer to Okotoks and even

with all the players there were no major injuries.

“We had a good show-ing and they all played hard. The coaches and fans were great,” said Habing.

There were between 500 to 600 entries for the raffle which was held. Over 80 items were donated. The items donated to the raffle ranged from flowers, to bikes, to tools, and it was hard for people to decide said Seminuk.

“We actually ran out of raffle tickets and had to re-print more,” said Seminuk.

The Strathmore Venom Midget C team has fallen to fifth place after a tough 7-1 loss to the Okotoks Mustangs May 26.

With the loss, the Venom fell to 3-4 on the season.

“This was one of our worst games of the year, but all the kids had track and field so they were all exhausted before we even got to the game,” said coach Shawn Tourout. “They have had a good year though - they went from losing three in a row to winning three in a row.”

The Mustangs scored their first goal

three and a half minutes into the game. A minute later the Mustangs scored an-other goal.

Strathmore’s Samantha Mackie was given the first penalty of the game, fol-lowed by Jaden Leonard with the sec-ond penalty.

Carston Tourout scored the first goal for Strathmore with seven minutes left on the clock in the first period. The Mustangs managed to score their third goal of the game right before the clock ran out for the first period.

The Mustangs continued to control of the ball, keeping it down in Venoms end zone. The Mustangs grabbed another quick goal, bringing the score to 4-1.

Crowther Memorial Junior High, CMJH, is sending to com-pete in the Track and Field Zones 72 students in Calgary on June 2.

“We usually have about that amount,” said Pat Walsh, from CMJH.

Anyone who placed first or second in any of their events will be at the zones. There are 12 students going from Holy Cross Collegiate, six from Stan-dard School and four from Trin-ity Lutheran Christian Academy. The zones meet is taking place at Glenmore Park.

Members of the Cheadle 4-H decided to try something new this year when they created the Carcass Club.

The kids each picked out a calf, raised it, have gone through judging activities and are now selling them in quarters. The kids went to Pure Country Meats to judge the carcass from underneath the skin and to see how it is cut and pre-pared.

“The smell can kind of get to you, for the most part the kids understand this is where our food comes from and are very interested and very proud to be produc-ing a quality product,” said Patti Brewin with the 4-H club.

“It was kind of fun to see them looking

at steaks being cut and how they look.”This was a new concept for the 4-H

club, and it was started when the club realized it is getting harder to get people to come out to the show and sales.

“We kind of took this on to try some-thing new for marketing and advertising for the animals. So we’ll see if they felt it was something worthwhile, I know they have had a lot of ideas and a lot of inter-est so I would be surprised if we didn’t do it again next year,” said Brewin. There are not many groups selling their meat like this, and Brewin said she only found a few in the U.S but not really in Canada.

“What we’ve tried to do is come out with a product that we sell in quarters with a price per pound,” said Brewin.

Pure Country Meats has been helping provide this kind of quality. They are

the ones cutting the animal and will be mixing the front and the back so buy-ers will have a good mix of the differ-ent beef. Buyers can also specify the cut they want.

“We support every 4-H club and we try to help out as much as possible,” said Shawn Tourout, who co-owns Pure Country Meats with Mike Conley.

“For us it’s the same processing. It’s a 21 day hanging process either way, for them it’s nice if they have them presold,” said Tourout. The 4-H club will still be doing the show and sale, which will be in Rockyford this year, and after the ani-mals have been judged they will be sold in a live auction. The buyer would bid on the price per pound on the whole animal, and then send the meat to Pure Country Meat to be cut. The kids started

with 14 animals and have already sold half since the beginning of May. A quar-ter works out to roughly 100lbs, and the clubs are selling it for $5.50/lb. The mini-mum order is 100lbs. Anyone interest-ed in placing an order can contact Patti Brewin at 403-901-1413 or Jeff Warrack at 403-934-5648.

The annual Gleichen, Cluny, Standard and Hussar 4-H Show & Sale Achieve-ment Day was held May 30 at the Hus-sar Arena. There were 33 members that showed their steers this year.

As always, the local businesses showed their tremendous support in purchasing these steers. An excellent job was done by our confirmation judge Rod McLean with help from our junior judge Erica Sage, as well as our Showmanship judge Karen Schmid and Grooming judge Patty Klys.

Chelsea Heryford did an awesome job as our MC for the show and again Dar-ren Rebalkin was a super auctioneer for the sale. The sale average was $2.02 on the 33 steers. The Hussar 4-H Beef Club auctioned off their fundraiser calf for $2.40 per pound to Clark Farms – Roy and Karen Clark of Hussar.

Grand Champion of the show was member Kayla Sandum’s 1311 pound Charolais steer which was purchased by Western Chev Olds of Drumheller for $2.30 per pound. The grand champion banner that Kayla received was donated by Hussar Savings.

Mario PrusinaTimes Editor

His resume speaks for itself.

After six years out of the game of hockey, Parry Shockey is stepping back behind the bench.

And the UFA Bisons couldn’t be happier.

The local triple-A midg-et team named Shockey their new head coach, after an exten-sive search to find the team’s new bench boss.

“I love coach-ing – I’m pas-sionate about it,” said Shockey. “I’m at a point in time in my life where I thought I could fit it into my sched-ule and it seems like it’s workable. It’s close and convenient from where I live.”

Shockey began his coaching career in the 1993-94 season, as an as-sistant coach to Mike Bab-cock and the Lethbridge Pronghorns of the CIAU, where he won a National Title. The following two seasons he was assistant coach with the Spokane Chiefs (WHL), winning the conference champi-onship.

Shockey took over as head coach of the Le-thbridge Hurricanes for the 1996-97 season, lead-ing them to the Western Hockey League Champi-

onship and a Memorial Cup finalist.

He followed up his championship season by guiding the Regina Pats to a conference champi-onship, before becoming part-time colour analyst for the Calgary Hitmen radio broadcast team for the 1998-99 season.

He began as a part-time scout for the NHL’s Los Angles Kings during the 1998 season, before joining them as their full time Western Scout from 2000-04.

Shockey was Head Coach and

Director of Hockey Oper-ations for the Moose Jaw Warriors for the 2004 sea-son, before taking time away from the game.

Now, Shockey is look-ing to bring his expertise to the Bisons, helping 15-17 year-olds kids play to the best of their abilities.

“Ultimately, I’m a firm believer in what I classify as hybrid hockey, which is the Canadian game – it’s gritty, hardworking, de-termination,” said Shock-ey. “It still allows talent and skill (players) to rise up and do what they do best. You can’t hold tal-ented players back. You have to allow them to be creative – they just have to play creative within a structured system.”

The Bisons now wait

until training camp be-gins in early September before they know what type of team they will ice this fall. They will not know what players will be returning or moving on with their careers.

However, according to General Manager Neil Glionna, getting the right coach behind the bench is the first step to devel-oping a championship team.

“He’s going to bring a lot of credibility to the or-ganization,” said Glionna. “He has no ties to any other teams (or players) which is perfect – just what we need.

“I’m anticipating (the) players learning a lot and I’m anticipating a lot of families learning a lot. I just hope they come and listen to what Parry has to say because he has a lot of experience.”

During his career, Shockey has coached NHL players such as Bryan Mc-Cabe, Brad Stuart, Barret Jackman, Chris Phillips, Kyle Calder, Dustin Boyd and potential 2010 Stan-ley Cup Champion, Troy Brouwer.

“If I called all my boys back, we’d have a pret-ty good hockey team,” smiled Shockey. “That is the reward of coaching – I don’t think that coaching pays very well, but when (a former player moves on to higher levels), that is payment itself.”

A BBQ had been planned in conjunction with it but due to the weather the club decided to buy pizza instead. Chad Bassen gave the new equipment a go.
