Finding a way to help patients suf-fering from dementia, aggression or a disability that won’t calm down can be tough on both the staff and patient, es-pecially if sedation is required. An alter-native method is always being sought out and at the Strathmore Hospital on July 27 an alternative method arrived that is already making an impact.

A sensory stimulation cart has been purchased from Dakota Comforts and Designs by the hospital foundation.

“It calms dementia. It creates a sooth-ing environment, it gives them some-thing to focus on and it’s quite relaxing,” said Gwen Cyr, activity convener for long term care at the Strathmore hospital.

“It started off with I just wanted to get a few little things to do an activity with and the more we researched it, the more we discovered about the benefits. We found this online and thought that it was maybe the most ideal.”

The cart has a bubble tube filled with water and ‘fish’ and it lights up with four different colours. There are also fibre op-tic cables attached to it that light up. The weight of the cables are meant to be a comfort, they are also fairly indestructi-ble. There is no electricity going through them, which makes them harmless if bit-ten or chewed on.

There is a projector on with a number of videos, of flowers, and stars and even an electric animated musical one.

“(If) the families have pictures on DVDs or anything we can project them on their (the residents) walls for them,” said Cyr.

“Usually in the afternoons I dim the lights down on the unit for an hour and I have put on a movie or stars or some-thing and just calm the environment down.”

At times the cart will also be left out in the main sitting area and as residents, and even staff, walk by they will stop and look at it. Individual therapies can also be done in residents’ rooms, which is one reason why the hospital went with the cart option.

“It’s good for the ones that don’t get any other therapies, that don’t leave their rooms, it gives them something to focus on for an hour or two,” said Cyr.

Cyr said a Two Hills senior care facil-ity and Carewest in Calgary also use a cart. She is not sure which other se-

nior’s facility uses one. Ron Forrest from Calgary began cre-

ating the sensory rooms and carts 12 years ago. He had semi-retired and was looking for something to do. He came across a beanbag chair called a Dakota chair that was specially made for someone with special needs. It had harnesses and straps to hold people in

Is your renewal today? The insurance companies try

to get their ‘offer to renew’ policy documents to you 30-45 days prior to renewal, to allow you time to make any arrangements necessary to the policy. (don’t forget, mistakes can be made, so it is important to review these documents and make sure the vehicles, coverage, use and listed drivers are current and up to date) At this time you can make arrangements on how you would like to pay for the upcoming policy as well.

If you are looking for quotes for your policy, you need to get this done ahead of time. Your insurance policy will expire at 11:59 pm, the night before your renewal.

Now, it should be fair to warn you that most insurance policies are set to renew automatically, so this usually is a non-issue. The insurance company assumes you want to keep that policy, and it can only be cancelled with a signed letter, or they will cancel you for non-pay. I see this a lot too. If you choose to switch insurance

companies on renewal, you need to let the old one know, or you could be cancelled for non-pay, and owe money from the time the policy renewed, to the time your policy is cancelled! It can get pretty messy.

When you walk in on the day of your renewal and would like a quote on your policy, with the intention to switch companies then technically, you are uninsured on that day, until you get the new policy in place!!!!

place. A woman came with her child who had not given her a moment’s peace in weeks. She placed him in the chair and he relaxed almost instantly and it calmed him right down, said Forrest. The woman wanted the chair but the people making them at the time had decided they weren’t going to do them anymore. Forrest said it was decided right then and there that he would keep making them.

His first business trip to Strathmore was to create a sensory room for West-mount School.

“It’s mainly being used for small children with learning disabilities and schools and that sort of thing. It’s of-fering individuals a different environ-ment. What we have found is what works for the kids also works for the adults and it also works for the senior citizens in terms of the dementia pa-tients and that sort of thing,” said For-rest.

“It distracts them from the normal everyday noises and things that act confusing and gives them something else to react to.”

Forrest said Two Hills has had a cart going on almost four years, they have even made the bathrooms into sensory bathrooms, changing the lights and the walls are painted or a window painting on the walls.

Cyr said the hospital plans to host an information session in October for Sagewood and other neighbour-ing counties and facilities. The session will outline how well it is working for Strathmore and Forrest will come out and provide a more in depth lesson on how the cart, and sensory stimulation equipment works.

On Aug. 17 and 18 the Gleichen Fall Fair will delight crowds from around the area for the 28th year. Sponsored by the Gleichen Ag. Society, the event features a rodeo starting at 5 p.m. on the 17th and 18th as well as a full day of events starting the morning of the 18. The first event starts at 8 a.m., a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Gleichen Lion’s Club with all proceeds going to STARS. This breakfast goes un-til 10 a.m., which is when the parade

starts. Be there early to get a great spot! The whole event is very family ori-

ented. The cost is $2 per person or $5 for families. There will be a face painter and bounce houses for the kids as well as many other events for adults, includ-ing a bench show with many different vendors, a show and shine, Red Neck Olympics, and a Bed Derby.

The success of the Gleichen Fall Fair over the past 28 years is due to commu-nity support and the hard work of the organizers. Over its history the event has changed a little almost every year, but at its core it stays the same.

“We change it up a little bit every year as far as what we have for the kids…,” said Fran Miller, who has been helping with the fair for 11 years. “The parade is getting larger every year, every year it’s very similar but a little different.”

If anyone is interested getting in-volved with the fair they should con-tact Brenda Tower (403-734-2562) or Fran Miller (403-734-2891) to ender in the bench show, Alice Booth (403-644-2969) to enter a float in the parade, or Ian Mast (403-734-2526) to enter the show and shine.

It was just about a year ago when Rockyford resident and volunteer fire-fighter Scott Campbell proposed cre-ating a Badlands Search and Rescue (SAR) team.

Things have been moving along at an admittedly slow but steady pace, and once financing is finalized and in place Campbell predicts things will speed up.

“We have 14 people that are signed up right now that are members with search and rescue. I’ve got a few more people that are probably going to be joining fairly quickly here, they’re showing a lot of interest,” said Campbell.

“We’re based out of Rockyford at this time, though we’re going to be serv-ing Wheatland, Starland, Kneehill east towards the special areas, (and) poten-tially down to Brooks. A lot of that will be determined once we have our op-erational status. But we are going to be covering a pretty good-sized area.

“We’ve been doing some training over the past few months here. We’ve done a little bit of training on first aid, a little bit of training on incident com-mand system, knots and rope training, so just some real basic stuff right now.”

Campbell anticipates the Badlands

SAR will be operational in April 2013, but until then they are unable to as-sist with any missions. It doesn’t mean things will be dull for the current mem-bers, there is more training scheduled.

In September there will be a navi-gation and GPS mapping course, and in October a four-day wilderness/first aid course which includes an overnight scenario is being planned.

“Basically part of it will be this sce-nario where we’ll do a search for about half an hour to an hour looking for a victim or victims depending on how many teams we have and then once we locate these people we’ll be caring for them throughout the night. No mat-ter what the weather is we will be out there,” said Campbell.

In the spring they will be doing the basic search and rescue course. Once that is completed then they will have all of the training up-to-date that they need to and will need to take care of a few more details before getting opera-tional status.

Campbell is still hoping to get 20 to 40 people to help really get the Bad-lands SAR off the ground. Members are expected to commit to a minimum of six training or search scenarios per year. Also there is a financial commit-ment.

Each member is expected to provide their own basic search and rescue pack, which will hold everything a person needs to survive 24 to 48 hours, and what will be needed on pretty much any mission. Campbell said the pack could cost $1,000 to $1,500.

Still not sure what exactly Search and Rescue is all about and if you would like to join? No worries, Campbell said anyone interested in coming out to a training session can e-mail him.

“We do ask people to sign a waiver that are coming that aren’t members for obvious reasons, but people can come and at the very least see what we’re do-ing. Depending on what sort of train-ing that we’re doing will depend on the level of participation that we’ll allow,” said Campbell.

“If we’re doing some fairly technical training we’re not going to put some-body into a harness and reppel down the side of a cliff per se that has no ex-perience, but we do certainly welcome people to come out and observe what we’re doing and hopefully take part in at least a bit of the training to get a taste for it.”

More information about Badlands Search and Rescue can be found on Facebook or Scott Campbell can be reached at [email protected].

Members of Town council called for a special council meeting for Aug. 8. During the meeting revisions were made to the Memorandum of Un-derstanding (MOU) between the Town and United Way. The revisions included the addition of clause 2.03 which states: to designate staff/administrative support to the Area Partnership Committee who will regularly attend meetings and provide assis-tance as needed.

Clause 2.12 was also added which indicated a needs assessment should be done for Strathmore a

minimum of every five years in order to determine priority areas that funding decisions by the Area Partnership Committee will be based on.

The revisions were approved unanimously. The Lakewood Meadows Land Use Amendment was given first reading and a public hearing has been set for Sept. 5.

Councillor Dave Hamilton made a motion to ap-prove the terms of reference for the 2012 Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games Bid Committee. The pur-pose of the committee is to compile and submit a bid to host the 55 Plus Summer Games in July of 2015. The complete bid package must be received by Dec. 31, 2012.

Plans to revitalize the downtown area in Strath-more are being discussed as business owners are being asked for feedback on the project proposal.

Town council members Rocky Blokland and Bob Sobol have proposed a beautification project to improve Strathmore’s downtown. Blokland and Sobol are gathering feedback from local business-es who will be affected by the changes with the intention of presenting the information to rest of council at a later date as a possible future project.

“[Sobol and I] are going up and down the street with [the plan], talking to business owners to see what the feedback is,” said Blokland. “So far we’ve had pretty positive feedback.”

Out of 32 businesses that Blokland and Sobol have talked to, only one business has offered neg-ative comments.

Blokland says that changing downtown will help build “people’s pride” in their downtown area and “bring downtown Strathmore up to the level of the rest of the town.”

Since this plan is in the preliminary stages, no dates or budgets have been set. Blokland says that he and Sobol are just looking to get the word of the project out and co-operation from local busi-ness owners.

Blokland lists a few things that would be changed with the current proposal, if council so approved, which include exchanging advertising benches for decorative steel benches, replacing street lamps with coach lanterns, and adding a median into the center of the street and changing diagonal parking to parallel.

“There’s four or five different things we’re look-ing at,” said Blokland, “I’m trying to get people to look outside the box. It’s time for a change.”

While Blokland and Sobol both recognize the cons to these ideas, Blokland is confident that the residents of Strathmore will see that the pros out-weigh the cons.

“We’re going to lose about 37 parking stalls,” said Blokland, and he knows that will be the “number one complaint.” However, he assures this won’t be a problem as there are three parking lots available in the downtown area to be utilized.

Blokland says that this plan, if approved, “won’t cost a huge amount of money.”

Positive results from the renovations include health benefits from being able to walk through downtown, a sense of pride and happiness from having a nicer downtown, and a reduction in traf-fic concerns.

“Basically we’re trying to do something to change the downtown area and make it look bet-ter. We want to brighten up the area,” he said.

Pat FuleFule for Thought

When you are a new parent, you might think you would miss the intimacy of being a couple … of those WILD nights together (YOU know what I mean!) … (Okay … now we’re back on a planet where people actually breathe Oxygen!).

The ONE thing that ALL new parents miss the most is … SLEEP! I’m going to get “All Shakespeare” on you now, because he (whoever THEY think he was!) wrote in “Macbeth”, that Sleep : “…knits up the ravelled sleeve of care.”

In other words (for those of you who stayed af-ter the word “Shakespeare”), sleep is the thing that helps us rest, and it also can ease our worries (and you thought I was bluffing about understanding Shakespeare … shame on you!).

Sometimes in REAL Life, it takes a long time, and a LOT of patience to get your kids to go to sleep. Oh sure, we’ve all tried reading stories … having a quieter time before bed, a favourite stuffed animal (not the one grandpa shot!), warm milk, a night light … Blah, Blah, Blah!!!

What we want as parents is that when it’s bed-time, and the story’s been read … the kids will actu-ally go TO sleep! I used to be so tired at “Bedtime Story Time,” that I’d hold a few pages of a book together … fake it … and hope my kids wouldn’t catch on! But we all know, they do … and I was forced to read that same DAMN book for the fitth time that week!

One night, I had FINALLY gotten the kids to bed, and in the middle of the night, my daughter Breanne began to cry. Oh horror of horrors .. the night light was out! This sadly, was a big deal to my 18 month old daughter! I rushed around, trying to find a light bulb to replace the “dead” one. I looked everywhere, trying to find a replacement … to no avail! I decided, that at 2:30 a.m. on a school night, maybe a Christmas light would do the trick! After pulling down all the Christmas lights in the base-ment, I found a yellow one, put it in, and quietly (like a Ninja) … went back to bed. Before she even cried, I knew. I had picked one of those stupid, an-noying lights that BLINK!! When I went back, she was on the verge of tears … all because of that stu-pid, yellow, blinking light!

Because I can be stubborn … I tried four OTHER lights that ALSO blinked, before I found one that just GLOWED yellow! (You’d think I would bring up a handful of lights to try!!). Breanne and I were finally able to sleep! I looked at the clock … it read 3 a.m., AND SHE WAS FINALLY ASLEEP (little did I know this same situation would happen regularly,

when she was 21!!).For those of you hoping that this ONLY happens

with baby girls … be warned!! When we were still a very young married couple

(…okay, Debbie was the YOUNG one!) … we vol-unteered to be part her school’s year end “Progres-sive Dinner.” (Word to the wise … NEVER volunteer to host Dessert!)

Now, Brennen (as a baby) had a TOTALLY regular routine: up at 6:30 a.m. for about four hours, then back to bed (hopefully to nap). Our LAST guests left at 5:30 a.m.!!

We were exhausted … and tried everything to po-litely hint … cleaning up, wiping counters, empty-ing ashtrays (remember those?) … finally we were alone! And of course, my son woke up at 6:30 a.m.!! He didn’t seem to CARE that we’d only had one hour of sleep!! Thank God we were young, and that it was a Saturday, so we could take “Baby Shifts!”

Sometimes, it’s the grandparents who want to sleep. Many of you know my In-Laws (remember the “old friend” who got locked out of the motel room?). They love to be active, and they lead an AC-TIVE social life … (YOU know what I mean!)

Anyway, our kids started a morning ritual when we visited the G-Rents (cool kids’ slang … who knew?). Whenever they woke up, my kids would take their stuffed toy rooster, smack its butt, it would then “crow,” and scare the crap out of my In-Laws, who REALLY wanted to sleep! The G-Rents were not able to run, or hide, and of course … it HAD to be cute, ‘cuz their grandkids were doing it (I think they learned that staying out late was HAZ-ARDOUS to their health)!

Many years later, you would think that now (like many of you) .. and our kids are adults, we’d have a return to great sleeps. But, oh no, the kids conned us into a FAMILY DOG!!

THEY grew up … and LEFT!!! Brodie “the Wonder Dog” is worse than the two of them! He (because we’re dumb!) … is used to sleeping on OUR bed! So now, instead of kids wrecking our sleep, we have a four-legged fur ball that hogs a King-Sized bed, snores, dreams, passes “gas”, and then has some stupid “instinct” to JAM against us all through the NIGHT!!!!

People tell you that once you have kids, you’ll forget EVERYTHING about the “Single Life” … all I know, is that I slept a WHOLE LOT better THEN!

The third annual ‘Race against Hunger’ program initiated by encana has been a continued success. The program is designed to help raise food, awareness, and funds for food banks in encana’s key operating areas, which are also along the GmC Pro Tour route. On August 3 there was the annual ‘Community Pardner BBQ.’ Unofficially approximately $5,600 was raised for the Wheatland Food Bank from all of the ‘Race against Hunger’ events this year.

To the EditorReaders will recall April 13, 2010 as the date which

saw many areas in Wheatland County flooded due to the heavy snowfall in the days previous. We awoke that morning to find that most of our yard was under water. As the thaw continued and precipitation fell, the water continued to rise.

We arrived home from work on June 21 to a flooded garage, a floating deck and a lake where our driveway should be.

Maybe we should have anticipated a situation like this. After all, we’re situated beside a slough, at the bot-tom of a natural bowl in the land. In hindsight, flooding was a pretty obvious possibility. Maybe we assumed that the original developers of the property knew what they were doing.

It doesn’t matter now. It’s interesting to note, how-ever, that the one thing we heard most often from long-

time residents was “I’ve lived around here for __ years, and I’ve never seen it this high before!”

Small comfort when for three plus months you can’t leave your house without rubber boots and the dog has to be carried across the swamp just for a pee.

This is not, however, a letter of complaints. This is a long overdue letter of appreciation to those who helped us, in small ways and large ways. We wish to publicly acknowledge and thank everyone who helped us out (see the thank you list in the classified section).

If we missed your name, let us know. We are aware that there were others who tried to get help for us, and we appreciate you for that.

Thank you all so much for everything you did.

Sincerely,Mike, Barb and Jeremy Froese

Letters to the editor

To the EditorMy name is Susan Gates and I have worked for

Wheatland Family and Community Support Services (WFCSS) for the past ten years. Recent events have prompted me to write this letter.

The staff at WFCSS was informed on Monday, July 23 that the Town of Strathmore will be pulling their portion of FCSS funding and starting their own FCSS. They have every right to make that decision. My is-sue is the way it was handled.

WFCSS has been in partnership with the Town of Strathmore for 34 years. With that length of time, I feel we deserved more respect, consideration and common courtesy than we were shown. Would staff experienced in the programs not help to make a more seamless transition? Has the town given any thought or consideration to the employees of the ex-isting FCSS? What would have been wrong with the town working with us to better serve the residents of Strathmore? It was stated that the town residents should have a say in what programs are available. Is that not why we have two Town Councilors on the WFCSS board? I honestly believe that the town does not even know what programs are actually offered through WFCSS to the town residents.

As to the “extensive research into the pros and cons of bringing the FCSS Program under the um-brella of the Municipality of Strathmore” would it not

be in the town’s best interests to work with WFCSS to find out WHAT programs are being offered, the cost to offer these programs and the staffing time it takes to offer these programs? What happens now to all the programs we currently run that are inter-twined between the county and the town, such as the Wheatland County Food Bank?? Why would you open your own Town FCSS and then want to partner with the existing FCSS on programs? I wonder if it’s a budget issue? How does the town plan on provid-ing “enhanced” services with only half the funding? Funding is provided on a per capita basis.

What expertise or knowledge does the town have to run a Home Support Program? Do they know what it entails? How has the town prepared to offer this program? Do they realize the cost of running a Home Support Program? What really worries me is that the senior & disabled clients will be paying a lot more than they currently are for these “enhanced” services!

So many questions and no answers! We are all long-term employees at WFCSS and I

think that says something to the fact that we are all dedicated to FCSS and the programs that we work with. To work with FCSS, I believe that you have to be a very compassionate person who cares about the agencies and individuals that you work with.

Partnership comes to an end

To the EditorFor quite some time, I have been very concerned

about the lack of a pathway along George Freeman Trail (west side). This is an expensive venture, and to complicate matters, it will be resolved once devel-opment on the east side commences (as a sidewalk is planned). As I looked at the field between The Ranch (Archie Klaiber Trail) and Parklane Drive, it was evident that, with a little effort, this area could be cleared and a pathway established to allow pe-destrians to walk safely. After raising this concept with our administration, they then approached Paul

Douglas from United Communities (The Ranch De-velopers) who agreed that this was a good idea and offered to take action. The result is a new pathway which allows pedestrians a safer alternative than walking along George Freeman Trail (for a portion, at least). My compliments to Mr. Douglas and the folks from United Communities – their eagerness to take action in this matter shows they are true com-munity partners!

New pathways make for safer walks

To the EditorThere is no other way to describe this government

and the agencies under its control.Last week’s article outlined the extravagant ex-

pense claims of Allaudin Merali, the former Chief Fi-nancial Officer with Alberta Health. In three years he managed to push through $350,000 in entertainment and other expenses.

On top of a $500,000 a year salary, he averaged $10,000 a month in meals, liquor and other claims. After the centralized Super Health Board was estab-lished in 2008, Merali became a health consultant in Ontario, where he again became infamous for his excessive claims.

Despite his notoriety in government circles, Alber-ta Health hired him as their head accountant a few months ago. More revelations elevate the situation to the repulsive. For his three years of work with Capi-tal Health, a $500,000 annual salary and $350,000 in expenses was simply the start. Read slowly to digest the magnitude.

In addition to his regular pension (for three years work), Merali receives a “supplementary” pension of $13,303 per month (yes, per month!). He also re-ceived 1 million (one million) dollars in severance pay. There is now word that we might be on the hook for another severance package for his few months’ efforts with the Super Board.

Revelations suggest that there is far more than one pig madly slurping. Taxpayers are on the hook for a further $35 million in supplementary pensions to other executives with Alberta Health.

This behavior is anything but an anomaly. You might recall the $371,000 paid to a “consultant” by the name of Kelly Charlebois, when Gary Mar was Health Minister. The untendered contract was for “verbal advice.”

No report was ever given of Charlebois’ contribu-tions.

Charlebois has no expertise in the health field. He was a political insider with the Progressive Conser-vatives. At the moment he is the interim Executive Director of P.C. Alberta. I suggest it won’t be long before taxpayers are directly paying him again.

None of this would have come to our attention were it not for the diligent work of one reporter who dug up the slop via 143 Freedom of Information re-quests. There is no reason to believe that there are not hundreds of millions more in excessive handouts to others in a government where accountability is a foreign concept.

LUNACY AT THE FEDERAL LEVELYou may have heard of federal Language Com-

missioner Graham Fraser’s latest initiative. It seems that he will be sending secret language police out to eight Canadian airports to ensure that we are be-ing adequately provided bilingual services. These include Vancouver and Edmonton.

At a cost of $90,000, we will not only be able to determine whether the local Air Canada agent can speak to us in both official languages but also staff at airport restaurants, souvenir shops and bookstores.

As Kelly McParland of the National Post put it, “if there’s a more pointless waste of tax money than sussing out whether a Timmies cashier in Vancou-ver understands the French term for double-double, I can’t think of it.”

“Democracy must be more that two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for dinner”.

Jason Hale MLA Strathmore-Brooks

In the months leading up to the spring election, my Wildrose col-leagues and I highlighted example af-ter example of what happens when a political party has been in government for too long. We called attention to behaviour like the PC party soliciting and accepting illegal donations from public institutions like municipalities, school boards, Alberta Health Servic-es, and post secondary institutions, bullying and intimidation of health care professionals and local elected representatives, closed door contracts with PC connected firms with no pub-lic tendering, and the promotions and appointments of officials who have track records of abusing public dollars to top spots in government and the PC party.

We called it a “culture of corruption,” where mutual back-scratching insid-ers use public dollars for personal or political benefit. This is what happens when a party has been in power for more than four decades- politicians and insiders get out of touch with ev-eryday Albertans, entitlement sets in and they believe the rules that apply to everyone else no longer apply to them.

This week, a glaring example of this deep seated and entrenched behav-iour hit the news. The Chief Finan-cial Officer of Alberta Health Services was revealed to have received about $350,000 in expenses for unbeliev-able claims like car detailing and re-pairs to his Mercedes Benz, expensive meals, butler service and opera tick-ets, in his previous role with Capital Health between 2005-08. Despite this background, he was appointed CFO of Alberta Health Services about three months ago. Because of public expo-sure, the CFO is stepping down and may walk away with a hefty taxpayer funded severance package of nearly half a million dollars.

What’s more, just prior to the elec-tion, he had actually been appointed as the Controller for the entire govern-ment of Alberta, through an Order-in-Council, which is a special decree put forward by the Minister of Finance and approved by the Premier and Govern-ment Cabinet Ministers. It’s unclear why he left that role, but immediately after the election, he became the CFO of Alberta Health Services (AHS).

Trying to explain this fiasco after it became public, the Minister of Health had very few answers for Albertans. When trying to justify how this indi-vidual got hired as the top financial watch dog for our health care sys-tem in the first place, the Minister of Health said he was “dumbfounded”, “outraged” and didn’t know about ex-penses or his previous involvement with the Ontario scandal.

Right.Dumbfounded. The problem is that

other Ministers acknowledged they did know about the individual’s role in the spending scandal in Ontario. Ei-

ther nobody knew, which reveals rank incompetence and negligence in the hiring and appointment process, or they’re fudging the truth. Of course, Premier Redford isn’t here to address Albertans directly about this affront, because she is at the Olympics in Lon-don, on a trip that will singlehandedly cost taxpayers much more than what most Albertans will make this year: an estimated $84,000.

There is so much wrong with this situation, it is hard to even know where to start. Aside from the galling expense claims and obscene waste of public dollars, the incompetence or wilful oversight in the appointment process, and the pattern of politicians and senior government officials only looking out for themselves, Albertans can be forgiven for also being alarmed about what this fiasco says about the government’s priorities. Irresponsible abuse of public dollars is probably just the tip of the iceburg, and it is symp-tomatic of a broken and corrupt sys-tem.

But, sadly, this is par for the course. After four decades in power, this gov-ernment’s decisions are totally out of whack from the common sense of most Albertans. They treat taxpayer dollars like a bottomless personal piggybank to reward insiders and political pals while Albertans suffer on waiting lists for specialized procedures and surger-ies that are among the longest in the country, emergency rooms and Emer-gency Management Services are in cri-sis, seniors in long term care facilities have been fed disgusting, processed and packaged food shipped long dis-tances, many Albertans have trouble finding family doctors who will take on new patients, and front line staff are scrambling to provide core services and going above and beyond to serve Albertans in a top heavy, unresponsive system that pays extravagant bonuses to senior AHS executives, even though the system continually fails to meet most of its targets.

Clearly, Albertans deserve answers - not only about expenses and hiring in Alberta Health Services, but about the management and oversight in other government departments too. As the Official Opposition, I and my Wildrose colleagues will keep asking questions and holding the government to ac-count. As the constituents of Strath-more-Brooks know, we will continue to advocate for “whistleblower” legis-lation so public servants, contractors and employees can speak out about ethical breaches and wasteful spend-ing without fear of reprisal and for a more responsive freedom of informa-tion system to make politicians ac-countable. We will continue to fight for local delivery of health care, to get rid of the top layers of high priced execu-tives and to focus funds and decision making authority on the front lines so the health care system works better for all of us.

The combination of elaborate pyrotechnic fire-works and the celebration of multiculturalism may seem like an unlikely duo, but is exactly what makes Calgary’s unique GlobalFest such a success.

“I would have to say the main thing that ties them together is art and performance; I think a lot of cul-ture is expressed through dance, performance, mu-sic, food, and fireworks is just another extension of that in my opinion. Think of the sky as pretty much an open canvas, you can paint a theme to express your culture,” said Bryan Francisco, the GlobalFest Marketing and Communications Director.

The 10th annual GlobalFest will be located at El-liston Park, East Calgary from August 16-26. Differ-ent cultures from across the world will be showcas-ing their diversity in all aspects, including Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park (BCHP) who will be in at-tendance a second time around to represent Sik-sika nation and the Blackfoot culture.

“The best way to kind of envision it is that there are two simultaneous festivals going on, one is the One World festival from 6-9 (p.m.), in order to build up the anticipation for the multicultural fire works,” said Francisco.

The One World Festival includes four different performance stages, different cultural pavilions, ethnic food booths, children’s activities and a night market. For the first time ever, GlobalFest is having a Tipi village that BCHP will be a part of.

“We will have interpreters and staff on site do-ing interactive things with kids, promoting BCHP. On stage, we are going to have performances. We have a little theatre performance and our usual powwow performances, it’s grown since last year. We will be there all week but on every other day, five of the ten,” said BCHP General Manager, Jack Royal.

“We’re involved right at the beginning, we actu-ally have an elder coming to do a blessing to kick off the whole (event),” said Royal.

In celebration of GlobalFest’s 10th year, the number of nights with fireworks has increased from five to six. Francisco described the year of

2012 as being GlobalFest’s “biggest year in pro-gramming,” with the new additions of the Tipi vil-lage and a new urban arts stage. GlobalFest is one of Calgary’s largest locally drawn events, bringing in anywhere from 16,000-20,000 people daily, all in one park location.

Entering into the fireworks portion of the eve-ning, each night will showcase a fireworks display from a different country, including the Philippines (the 2011 People’s Choice), as well as Mexico, Chi-na, Brazil, and USA. The grand finale will be tak-ing place on Sunday, August 26th, and will include a firework display by Fireworks Director, Patrick Brault.

“He is one of the best in the business, he is an old friend of the business, he goes way back with our producer and our executive producer for many years, and since that time, he has had over 20-25 years of experience with fireworks and he’s done stuff for the World Cup, F1 Racing, he did the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and now he’s here with us,” said Francisco.

The title of the finale is called ‘Eclipse’ which includes elements of pleasure, success, spirituality, as well as destruction, regrets, rebirth and rebuild-ing through the different song selections.

“In Patrick’s words, he uses fireworks to create a personal metaphor for the non linear cycle of life,” said Francisco.

Each country must meet a certain criteria in their fireworks display including that 25 per cent of the music must be native to the country, and artistic requirements are involved including colour, preci-sion and synchronization.

In terms of the One World portion, Royal be-lieves it’s a great opportunity for BCHP to share its culture with others and anticipates being a part of GlobalFest next year.

“I think it’s a good opportunity also to promote Calgary and the original history of Calgary through First Nation’s perspective and sharing that with not only people from Calgary but with countries that come from around the world,” said Royal.

More information about GlobalFest and tickets can be available for purchase by visiting www.glo-balfest.ca. Tickets are currently priced at $15.

Blackfoot Crossing to make its mark at GlobalFest

Canadian tourism on the riseJenna Campbell Times Contributor

It has been over a year since the Canadian Tour-ism Commission (CTC) has launched the Canadian Experiences Collection®(SEC) marketing program which has thus far proved to be successful.

Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park (BCHP) joined the SEC in its second wave of approved ex-periences, on October 18, 2011. After a third wave of SEC approved applicants, the collection stands today with a total of 163 members. The CTC will be entering into its fourth wave, accepting appli-cations for new experiences from November 15- December 15, 2012.

In an attempt to stand out in the marketplace, the CTC created the SEC, a marketing program designed to promote unique travel experiences that can only be found in Canada to entice inter-national travelers. Eleven different countries are currently being targeted.

Travelers are drawn to the idea of once-in-a-life-time experiences, which is exactly what the CTC is emphasizing internationally. BCHP perfectly fits with the definition with its six square kilometers overlooking the Bow River, Tipi village, archeo-logical digging on site, and an extensive historical building of 66,000 square feet.

“You can go to any other institution and have other non-First Nation’s people and on non-First Nation’s land telling First Nation’s history, telling First Nation’s culture, interpreting their values, beliefs, and so on. Here you are going to get it directly from our own people,” said General Man-ager of BCHP, Jack Royal, who adds, “you’re going to get our perspective from our eyes, through our interpretation, through our own language.”

SEC members will receive the benefits of being marketed globally in 11 consumer markets.

Examples of exposure include utilizing social

media, travel and media relations and web mar-keting.

“It’s all based on the economy, some markets are doing quite well, some are still recovering from economic turndown, I think as the economy improves around the world, then the option for travel will come back and you will see Canada as a major player within the world,” said Frank Ver-schuren, the Brand Experience Specialist from the Canadian Tourism Commission.

Great potential lies in the Chinese market as Canada recently was granted Approved Destina-tion Status (ADS) by China in June 2010, allowing the CTC to promote Canadian travel within the country. The number of Chinese visitors to Cana-da is on the rise, totaling at 22,630 from May 2012, a 22 per cent increase from the previous year, ac-cording to the CTC.

“I think China, is a relatively new market that we are in, it’s only been a couple of years since we’ve had approved destination status from the Chinese Government so now we can formally go and sell Canada to the perspective of the Chinese people who wish to travel certainly in North America and into Canada,” said Verschuren.

Canada was named the number one tourism brand for a second year in a row on November 10, 2011 by the leading international brand consul-tancy, FutureBrand. The label demonstrates that Canada carries a positive connotation worldwide.

“The market potential, certainly from an inter-national perspective, is quite high because the av-erage spent from a visitor from a foreign destina-tion is much higher than what a Canadian spends in Canada, so the more international revenue you can create, the higher yield of revenue that comes into Canada,” said Verschuren.

The SEC marketing program is still in the early stages, and in time, Canada willreap the benefits of the CTC’s marketing endeavors.

Debbie Wakelam, owner and operator of mead-owlark Senior Care Home, provides a family at-mosphere for seniors under her care. Sharon McLeay Photo

Sharon McLeayTimes Contributor

Debbie Wakelam wants people to pay attention to the announcement made by Health Minister Fred Horne last month that addresses seniors hous-ing needs.

The government is recommending changes based on the ‘Moving Con-tinuing Care Centres Forward: Concept Paper’, indicating movement towards an ‘aging in one place’ concept, a larg-er facility model for senior care.

Wakelam said the paper does not provide for alternate care options that were promised in the 2008 Aging in the Right Place document. It promised to provide more options and improve choice and availability as to where Al-bertans receive services.

The new plan amalgamates all levels of housing and care into one govern-ment department that oversees large development living sites, in which the residents would move from floor to floor as their medical needs increased.

“Where is our choice or an option in this proposal?” said Wakelam.

In an article in the Edmonton Jour-nal Health Minister Fred Horne said it is an early draft with “very preliminary ideas.” Horne said all Albertans would have a chance to weigh in on the de-sign of the new eldercare system at some point in the future.

Wakelam belongs to the Alberta Se-niors Citizens Housing Association (ASCH) that has representatives from all kinds of senior care facilities. She said they gave suggestions to the Al-berta Government about housing for senior citizens that incorporated many alternatives to large long-term care fa-cilities. The new plan does not seem to consider that input.

“We made suggestions to them; I think that the decision was already made. They have already built models. They are already going to do this. Al-though it is a draft, it is already a done deal,” said Wakelam.

There are currently different kinds of nursing facilities and long-term care homes. It can be confusing to the aver-age citizen.

There are voluntary, non-profit groups, organizations and religious groups that own auxiliary hospitals and nursing homes, and some are still municipally owned or co-owned. They operate under the Hospital or Nursing Home Act. If their services are con-tracted to the Regional Health Author-ity, their boards are accountable to the authority, as well as the staff, and cli-ents.

There are also Private nursing homes. They operate under the Nurs-ing Home Act and are accountable to their owners, their staff and clients and the regional authority - if they have a contract with them. Both are account-able to the Health and Welfare Minister in matters relating to the Act.

The new move may be a move to simplify this diversity of services.

There is some speculation that pri-vately owned facilities will eventually replace all publically managed homes. The financial strains on public homes include old building upkeep, increas-ing staff costs and providing fair living costs for low-income seniors, making it a challenge to meet their bottom line.

There is some evidence that the gov-ernment contracts are being awarded to large private developers, although smaller facilities are tendering con-tracts. Wakelam thinks smaller contrac-tors are reviewed and denied in favour of a one-size-fits-all development. The

smaller bid complies with the same licensing guidelines and providers are providing the same standards of service. Often smaller contractors are owners living in the community, with established historical relationships with potential clients. Clients are denied the choice of a more intimate style of care because not enough of these types of facilities are approved, or funding for upkeep and maintenance is withheld.

“When I met with Associate Minis-ter (of seniors) George VanderBurg, he said ‘If I had the decision making, I would give private developers the en-tire job and let them build the thou-sand beds that I need’,” said Wakelam. “Because you have dementia, why does it mean you have be in one of these facilities? I have two people here and they function quite fine.”

Wakelam has been involved in geri-atric home care for more than two de-cades and is following the Eden Val-ley Care philosophy. Each of her home mates have various levels of care needs. She worked with Alberta government officials to develop procedures and standards of care for small care homes, like her small four bedroom, age 86+, Meadowlark care home, located in Strathmore.

The Eden Valley approach is person centred, growth oriented and interac-tive within a home and community set-ting. www.edenalt.org. It differs from the medical institutional program ap-proach (dining program, bathing pro-gram, etc.) to transform a new way of thinking. It asks people to move from thinking of our elders as frail and sickly persons awaiting death in an institution; moving toward making the elderly contributing members of our community, interacting with family members, owning pets and participat-ing in community events.

Wakelam had previously worked in bigger care facilities and didn’t like how the caregivers were expected to care for the residents.

“I didn’t like how we had to do the care. You have so many residents to get up in a limited amount of time. They are sound asleep. You wake them up and sit them in a chair. That is not what these people deserve in their old age. I have one woman that sleeps in quite late and her family is OK with that. Why can’t she sleep in if she wants to? I have one lady that likes to have breakfast in her housecoat.”

She said the smaller care homes of-fer a more relaxed schedule, a smaller more comfortable living space that is less confusing and intimidating for de-mentia patients. Agitation is reduced. She says there is less dependence on medication. Participation in daily home activities such as helping in meal prep-aration or gardening is encouraged.

“Most old people die from boredom, loneliness and feeling helpless. You give them a purpose with simple things such as setting the table and participat-ing,” said Wakelam.

With the new guidelines, Wakelam doesn’t think her home can meet the large facility requirements. She also wonders if the private amalgamated care will have enough qualified staff to deal with extended needs. She says that the private developers are charg-ing for extra care needs and she won-ders if the extended care will be afford-able to everyone. She wonders if they phase out extended care in hospitals, will there be place for those not al-ready living in the large facilities, when the medical needs reach a Level 4 stage of care.

John GodsmanTimes Contributor

In the early 1920’s, the Hoff family decided to leave Germany and move to the New World. Ed’s father and broth-er moved to Canada, whilst one older brother moved to Argentina. Those who came to Canada moved to the Gleichen area, and purchased land to start farming. Ed was born in Cluny in 1931, the eldest of five children, and went to school mainly in Gleichen, al-though he did attend Cluny Dormitory for his high school. Following this he attended SAIT for two years Industrial Electricity. Following graduation, he was hired as an electrician on con-tract, by The Lutheran Church, to assist in rebuilding war damaged buildings and equipment in New Guinea. After spending five years there, he returned to Gleichen in 1959, and took over the family farm, from his father. For the next two years he worked and com-pleted exams, which led to his Masters Degree and an Electrician’s License in 1963, which broadened his work avail-ability to include residential house wir-ing, under Hoff Electricity.

Bev’s father was fifth or sixth genera-tion from Wales. His forefathers moved to Canada in the late 1700’s, and settled in Ontario. After graduating, he moved to Fort St John and this was where Bev was born in 1937, the middle child of five girls. She grew up there, and com-pleted her education in Fort St John and surrounding area.

Both Ed and Bev were previously married, but both lost their respective spouses to health. These marriages pro-vided Ed with a daughter and two sons, and in turn nine grandchildren. Bev’s first marriage also gave her a daughter and two sons, and she now has seven grandchildren.

Following their marriage Bev moved to the Hoff family farm in Gleichen in 1988, where they continued to farm until 1998, when Ed’s son Peter and wife Cindy took over the farm and rented the land. In 1990, Ed and Bev had started Evertight Fence Anchors – a company which manufactures guy anchors for agricul-tural use. Mainly they are used to tie down grain bins, trailers, tool sheds, calf shel-ters, retaining walls, fencing, etc. For 14 years, they travelled to agriculture shows all over Western Canada, before selling this business in 2004, so they could retire and move to their newly built house in Strathmore. They moved here to be closer to medical facilities, stores and the many friends from the Gleichen area, who had already moved here. In 2001, the farm celebrated its 100th anniversary of farming.

They were both very involved in the community. Ed was known as ‘Mr Fix It’. Even his father used to say that Ed could fix anything! Following his ser-vice in New Guinea, Ed continued to

volunteer his time and expertise for wiring and repairs at different church camps and community buildings. He was a member and served on the board of Unifarm, The World Mission Board of The Lutheran Church, and served as Superintendent of The Lu-theran Church Sunday School in Glei-chen, when his own family was young.

As mentioned above, Bev lived in the north at Fort St John. With her first husband they were very involved with the B.C. Seed Growers & B.C. Seed

Fairs and Seminars. Her husband was Pres-ident of The B.C. Seed Growers for 10 years. They were part of the planning committee when the North Peace Care Home Society was formed, and the Care Home was built.

Her husband served on the board from the beginning until his death. For five years, Bev taught Bible History to the confirmation classes of Peace Lutheran Church, and served as Vice President of the Church Council. She was also a member of the ELCW – a women’s church group, the local community club, and farmers union.

The main changes they have seen in Strathmore include the arrival of the big box stores like Walmart, Sobey’s, Canadian Tire and No Frills. In Wheat-land County - the family farm is a thing of the past. They are being purchased by large operations to create huge farms that most families cannot com-pete against.

This Sunday, August 19, four organic farmers are inviting people to spend the day touring their farms. Winters’ Turkeys in Dalemead, Heritage Harvest Farm located northwest of Strathmore, Cam’s Carrots near Carseland and Pop-lar Bluff Farm from Strathmore have all banded together to bring the farm tours to those interested.

“When we got together and talked about it we thought, well why don’t we do this on our own. The idea is to make the community more aware that there are organic farms here, and that there’s really good food being produced out here,” said Rosemary Wotske, with Pop-lar Bluff Farm.

“This is the second time we’ve done it and the comments we got the first time from the people who participated were all so positive. It’s just not some-thing that they get exposed to and they learn a ton more stuff about what actu-ally happens in the agricultural indus-try and specifically how their food gets grown,” said Mark Gibeau of Heritage Harvest Farm.

Organic farming is a niche market that is growing in popularity. Gibeau explained that the difference, other than not using pesticides, is the differ-ent method of getting soil fertility.

“Where conventional farming they basically buy fertilizers and those sorts of things. In the grain farming industry we rely on recycling our straw and then we buy some kind of fertilizers that are made out of bone meal, blood meal, feather meal that kind of stuff, some other kind of organic soil enhancers,” said Gibeau.

“Basically we want to get that whole biological system in the soil working in that natural rhythm rather than try-ing to compensate for it by using other kinds of fertilizers.”

Going organic was the best fit for Gibeau who, after 40 years of being out of farming, decided to buy a small section of land across from his home when the opportunity arose. Being a small land owner and trying to run in the conventional system wouldn’t work so he looked at the niche market, which is why Heritage Harvest Farms only grows organic and nothing but heritage varieties of wheat.

Wotske knew from a young age that she wanted to spend her life on the farm. “What drove me to keep trying new things was a love of good food. I began farming organically because I felt bad every time I used a chemical. Then I noticed that food tasted better without chemicals too,” said Wotske.

In ’85 she bought the farm and it was ’98 when she went certified. She grows

a number of different varieties of po-tatoes with up to 30 kinds a year. This year she is down to a manageable 16 kinds.

Cam of Cam’s Carrots, grows five dif-ferent coloured carrots. Three are the fresh eating variety, and two are cook-ing variety. He also grows beets, gold beets, candy stripe, red and white beets and parsnips.

With a majority of the buyers market coming from Calgary, that’s where tick-ets are being sold, and participants will be picked up from the Chinook LRT station. Last year was the first time they did the four farms and there were 30 to 35 people. Cam said they are nearly double that this year.

“Its another opportunity for people from the city to just get exposed to some of the different agricultural kinds of things and it’s a target market as well. These are people who are more likely a little more in tune as to where they shop and what they buy,” said Gi-beau.

Tickets are still on sale and can ei-ther be bought at Community Natural Foods, Sunnyside Natural Market, or Amaranth Whole Foods for $35 each. Wotske said locals interested could con-tact the individual farmers, but said it is probably worthwhile to have someone drop them off at the pickup point. The tour is from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m.

The Strathmore Boston Pizza (BP) Thunder bantam ‘A’ girls softball teams hosted the West-ern Canadian Championships for the girls and boys August 9 to 12.

Strathmore pulled off a great weekend, ad-vancing into the tiebreaker format to advance into the final four playoff round. All four teams were tied for the third and fourth place spots after the round robin.

Strathmore, Calgary, Fleetwood and Kelowna were all forced into extra games. Kelowna moved on to play Strathmore after defeating Fleetwood.

The two teams had met earlier in round robin play, with Strathmore defeating Kelowna 9-2. In the final match up between the two teams Kelowna was able to get on the board early and stay ahead, defeating Strathmore 7-0. The Strath-more Thunder walked away with a fifth place finish from the Western Canadian Champion-ships.

“Our team had a great run on the weekend, with one game somehow slipping away that cost us a third place seeding after round robin play. We had just jumped out to a 7-2 lead against Winnipeg and had full control of the game and somehow out of nowhere, the next inning was completed and we were trailing 10-7,” said BP Thunder coach Lanky Johnson.

“It was so innocent as it unfolded and that loss cost us the opportunity to finish in third seed prior to the playoff round and not having to play tie breaker games.”

Saskatoon went to the finals against Conquest. It was a big surprise in the finals when Con-quest took the two winning runs of the game. Saskatoon had scored at least 10 runs in every game they had played, and went into the gold medal game with an undefeated record of 7-0. Conquest had only suffered one loss prior to the final game, and that was to Saskatoon earlier in the page playoff.

The Conquest Coyotes won the gold medal with a score of 2-0.

“Overall on the season this was a fantastic year with these young ladies. In the beginning we had goals set to be sure as a first year “A” level team, that we work hard and learn how to be competitive,” said Johnson.

“In the end we got a bronze medal in Alberta “A” provincials then a 5th place in Western Can-ada Championships. That is worth GOLD and they deserve to feel proud of themselves. It will take few days for them to get over losing out, but it will slowly sink in and as we have told them all along ‘the game will pay you back’ for all the effort they put in this year and they are amazing athletes.”

In the boys U16 final Saskatoon took the lead 9-2 against the Prince Albert Astros.

Patricia Lyle has been riding in the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer for three years and is currently raising money for 2013, her fourth year. This charity bike ride through the Rocky Mountains holds a special place in Lyle’s heart after her father lost his bat-tle to cancer when she was eight years old. She already liked to cycle, so she decided to join the ride in 2010.

“(The ride) combined something that I enjoy doing with something that’s going to try to help people by raising money to find a cure, so kids don’t have to grow up without a parent,” said Lyle. “Every time you turn around, some-body’s being diagnosed with cancer and a good way to try and find a cure is to raise money for the people [to] get the equipment they need to try and find a cure to this nasty disease.”

In order to participate in this event, the rider must raise a minimum of $2,500 and currently Lyle is trying to raise money through barbecues at M&M Meats.

“I am not personally able to donate $2,500 to the Alberta Cancer Society so by doing the fundraising and riding each year I’m able to do my part and help to find a cure,” said Lyle. Her next barbecue is on Sept. 22 in front of M&M meats in Strathmore. Any contribution is appreciated and going to buy a burg-er helps Patricia ride in an event that means a lot to her.

“The first year I did it I was stand-ing at the starting line at Spruce Mead-ows waiting to take off and when they said, ‘okay everybody lets go’ it brought tears to my eyes to think of all these

people getting together to do this, to support this cause,” said Lyle.

All the money raised goes to the Al-berta Cancer Society. If you miss Patri-cia’s barbecue this September you can always donate through Patricia’s page at www.conquercancer.ca. Click do-nate, then search for Patricia Lyle.

“I ride because I can and I ride for those who can’t. I will continue to ride for as long as I am physically able to because there isn’t one person I know who hasn’t been touched by cancer in one way or another. Everywhere I go, I hear of someone else who has just been diagnosed with cancer or is going through treatments or has just finished treatments,” said Lyle.

Lyle’s dedication to this ride and her fundraiser is clear; her success in rais-ing funds for her to ride in this event is in the hands of people who choose to donate, or not.

“I don’t know what people… what makes people donate to one thing rath-er than another, as long as they come out and buy burgers and donate then it’s helping to find a cure,” said Lyle.
