On August 3 members o the Cheadle4-H club auctioned o a charity steerat the World Proessional Chuckwagon

Association races, with proceeds o thesale going to the Wheatland County

Food Bank. The sale o the steer ex-ceeded all expectations, being sold anddonated back about fve times, reachinga grand total o $25,250. This is not thefrst time the club has auctioned o acharity steer; last year they sold one attheir district 4-H show or $7,000, animpressive sum o money, but nothingcompared to the success this year.

We had a charity steer last year butwe sold it at our district 4-H show sothere wasnt as many buyers and it

wasnt as big o a crowd to sell it to,said Erin Warrack, member o the Chea-dle 4-H club. So with this venue and

with all the people that we had, therewas a lot o opportunities or us tosell it and donate it back and get more

money to raise or the ood bank. The club partnered with Encana or

the second year in a row. Encana prom-ised to match the money raised, dollaror dollar, making the total donatedto the Wheatland County Food Bank$50,500.The club was hoping a bigger venue

would help them raise more money, and they were certainly right; it wasan important choice to switch to thechuckwagon races.

I guess its just that there would def-

nitely be more buyers and more sup-port or the ood bank, said SabrinaKooistra, vice-president o Cheadle 4-Hclub.The members were thrilled with the

support they got rom the companieswho bought and donated back thesteer. Northwest Livestock, TERA Envi-

ronmental Ltd, Roadtrek Motorhomes,Global Training Centre and fnallyBoots and Boost Tires and Perormanceall bought and donated the steer backto the cause. The steer is set to go tomarket yet again with the fnal pro-ceeds adding to the grand total.

I think its pretty awesome that theysupported and kept going back in, likefve times, said Kooistra. The auction and the combined par-

ticipation o the Strathmore Stampede,4-H members as well as parents, ando course the buyers made this charityauction as successul as it was.

It promotes a sort o local connect-edness, and it promotes 4-H as what4-H is about, its about giving back to

the community and its really good tojust give back said District Representa-tive or Cheadle 4-H, Mike Brewin

The community supports 4-H, buy-ing the steers, sponsoring the sale, its

just a way to payback some o the mon-ey back to the community, said War-rack.As a small club, this is a big initiative

to take on and the ood bank is cer-tainly grateul.

It was an amazing donation, saysWheatland County Food Bank Trea-

surer Pat McCullouth, which is clearlyindicative o the monumental support

we get rom our community rom bothindividuals and corporations. As a small club with only 14 mem-

bers, this was an ambitious undertakingand luckily the kids had a lot o sup-

port rom their parents.Theyre 14 kids with big dreams,

said Clarence Kooistra, ather o mem-bers Sabrina and Maria.

As or next year, the Cheadle 4-Hclub plans on keeping with the trendo their large donations, and theyve de-cided that this venue is key. Theyre notletting the success get to their headsthough. Commenting on their plans ornext year, Sabrina Kooistra said, I think

wed probably try to do that same thingagain, I think it worked pretty well.

RCMP have charged a 39-year-old man with sexual as-sault, orcible confnement, obstruction o a peace of-cer and our counts o breaching conditions o release inrelation to the case. The individual is in custody and isscheduled to appear at the Drumheller Provincial Court

on Aug. 16. His name will not be released due to investi-gational reasons.

The Strathmore RCMP said they would like to thank thepublic or their assistance and cooperation in this matter.Several residents were asked to either leave their homes,or remain saely inside while the RCMP contained thearea.

This past week Agri-Trend nishedtheir bi-annual training event in Strath-more. Agri-Trend is a proessionalcoaching organization that helps arm-

ers with various aspects o their proes-sion by pairing them with coaches thatare in their area. Agri-Trend trains sixdierent types o coaches, rom mar-keting coaches to geo coaches, helpingarmers keep up with the ast-pacedchanges that occur all the time in alldierent aspects o arming.

The reason that armers work withan Agri-Trend coach is because theirworld is changing so ast, and urbanpeople have no clue as to the amounto technology that armers are integrat-ing in their operation and the rate ochange, said Chie Executive Ocerand ounder o Agri-Trend, Robert Saik. The world o arming is changing dras-tically year by year, and Agri-Trend is

committed to keeping armers up todate and helping them with the new is-sues that, in the past, armers may havenever had to deal with.

We just saw some statistics today that51 per cent o armers will not be trans-erring their arm land to their children(and) 70 per cent o armers dont havea long-term business plan, said Saik,so weve got to work with these guyson getting some stu in place so thattheyre ready or the transitions that aregoing to happen.Agri-Trend trains coaches in their

yearly winter and summer training ses-sions like the one that Strathmore host-ed this past week. With their networko over 200 coaches throughout NorthAmerica, Agri-Trend is condent theycan keep armers in the know.

When a armer works with us, and

the reason armers work with us, isthey make more money because weprovide agronomic leadership weprovide independent unbiased advice, because were not trying to sell some-thing, says Saik. Were really lookingat the gamut o science out there, (we)bring the armer more condence hisdecision making. The training was a success, with over

200 people rom arming communitiesacross Canada and the United Statescoming together or the workshops, tohear speeches rom experts in variouselds as well as having a little un witha sotball tournament.

Were always innovating so i wedont bring what I call the Tribe, i we

dont bring the Tribe together twice ayear then people get let behind, be-cause theyre working in araway plac-es and in small towns, said Saik. Weneed to bring them together to connect,to bring them up to speed on whatwere doing as an organization, whatchanges or enhancements were mak-ing to our processes, train them techni-cally and probably the biggest reasonis to give them a sense o camaraderie. As or location, Saik says Strathmore

was a good t or what Agri-Trend istrying to accomplish through this Sum-

    mer Training course.

Were all small town arm people, soits in our roots, everyone is pretty com-ortable here, said Saik.Anyone interested in getting more

ino about Agri-Trend can look at theirwebsite at www.agritrend.com or call(403) 343-8288.

Dealing with someone suering romdementia or behavioural issues can betough on both sta and patients. Se-dation isnt always the way to go, butsometimes options are limited, which iswhy Continuing Care at the StrathmoreHospital purchased a sensory stimula-tion cart last August.

Its very good in long term care andany dementia unit, I would encouragethe proper use. Its not a babysittingtool, thats been a learning curve orus, balancing how much to use it, saidGwen Cyr, activity convener or Con-tinuing Care.

Some sta think it should be 24/7but i you do that its not going to beeective so you have to know whenits perect to have it on and when itsnot. You dont want to overuse it so thatwhen you need it, it doesnt work.

I you give them the sensory whenthey dont have behaviours then whenthey do have behaviours its nothingnew, i you see it all the time you cantocus on that to stop the behaviour,The cart has a bubble tube lled with

water and sh. It lights up with ourdierent colours and there are bre op-tic cables attached to it which also lightup. There is a projector on with a num-

ber o videos, ones o fowers, and starsand even an electric animated musicalvideo. Cyr said the cart usually stays inthe common area. The sta had triedusing the cart in a ew residents roomsbut ound that it works best where ev-eryone has access to it.

Being able to completely eliminatethe use o medication is just not ea-sible, but the cart has helped and insome cases worked better than some othe meds. It all depends on each resi-dent.

We did notice with one resident itworked better than the behaviour medsand I honestly dont know what hermeds status is at, but when we were

trying to balance it denitely came inhandy, said Cyr.A projector is kept in the residents

room 24/7 and i she is having a mo-ment then they will turn the lights outand the projector on or her to helpcalm her.

Over the past year sta have learnedwhich residents the cart works or andwhen it works. They are noticing whatsigns there are that indicate it may betime to use the sensory cart.

I think the ones that dont have be-haviours are like you and me wheretheyre just intrigued, I still nd that thesta nd it calming at times, said Cyr.

Ater years o planning and dream-ing, arts groups in Strathmore now getto see their hopes come true. It was in2010 that things began to really takeshape when the Hope Bridges Soci-

ety applied or and received a grantto conduct a Community Arts Centreeasibility study. The study was just the push needed

to help the arts scene get going andnearly three years later an arts councilwas ormed.

I am so happy. I got here 11 yearsago, joined Wheatland Society o Arts, and watched it - along with so manyother arts groups - struggle, so youknew there needed to be more aware-ness and development in the arts, saidBrandy Hebbes, board member o theStrathmore Regional Arts Collective.

People dont even realize how manyarts groups exist in the area. Over theyears these little arts groups would go

in search o unding to promote theirart group but were continually turneddown. Town, county and government

insisted you need to have an arts coun-cil i you want to be considered seri-ously.And that is exactly what Strathmore

has now with the Strathmore RegionalArts Collective (SRAC). In 2012 SRACbecame incorporated, and the nine-person board has spent the past year

ocusing on strategic planning andsetting goals. The ultimate goal is see-ing an arts and culture acility created;something Hebbes said will likely beyears in the making.

One o the biggest short term goalsis to increase awareness and just letpeople (artists and art lovers) knowthat were here and we want to iden-tiy, support, and promote the arts andartisans said Hebbes. Our ocus is toprovide opportunities to the Strath-more and region artist, but some othat would entail bringing in perorm-ing groups rom other areas or the re-gion to enjoy as well.

SRAC is trying to gather artists andartisans to be members. Even i you

just enjoy art and want to have a voicein what is being brought to Strathmoreand the region, you are welcome to be

a member. Anybody is welcome to bea member o SRAC as it is a member-ship society.

SRAC will frst be introducing them-selves to the public at the end o Sep-tember when they host an Arts andSounds in the Park Festival. At theestival priority will be given to Strath-

more and Wheatland County artists.Hebbes said they will defnitely acceptapplications rom artists rom other ar-eas, but local artists and artisans willbe frst to fll the openings. As the es-tival expands they will be able to in-clude more artists rom outlying areas.Ater the estival, SRAC will plan a

ew things but the goal is to be a a-cilitator o sorts, assisting groups withevents and partnerships. We are com-piling a list o locations that artists canutilize whether they are perorming, displaying or doing classes.

SRAC can be ound on Facebookby going to Strathmore Regional ArtsCollective. There, applications can beound or the upcoming estival and

people can keep up to date on the lat-est inormation coming rom the col-lective.

Dreams coming true for arts community

Our feet are amazing. They are relatively small

for the weight they have to carry but contain an

intricate network of bones, tendons, ligaments and

Gardeners in the Town o Strath-more should be on the lookout or Fire

blight in their bushes and trees. Com-mercial growers say it is the numberone killer or their product in Southern

Alberta. We get Fire blight in the area every

year, said Karen Wournell, Supervisorat Eagle Lake Garden Centre. Withlots o rain, you get lots o dierent

bacteria and ungus popping up.The blight is a bacterium that aects

mainly apple, crab apple, hawthorn, pear and mountain ash trees, as wellas cotoneasters, raspberry, saskatoon, almond and rose shrubs.

Check closely i you see browningo owers, buds, or brown/black stemsand bark. It oten aects the plant bycurling the tips o new growth intoa shape that looks like a Shepherdshook. The bacterium does overwinterand new shoots will grow through thehook, spreading to new growth.

Fire blight spreads rom plant toplant, through rain, carried by insects(bees) and wind, or can spread viapruning shears. Damage and open

wounds on trees let bacteria settle inthe weakened unprotected area andinect it.

It is difcult to treat, but some peo-ple use copper sulphate sprays in thespring to contain the spores. Wournellsaid application has to be timed justright when using the spray. She recom-mends the preerred and more success-ul method, which is to cut six inches

below the inected site and burn thebranches. I you dont have a fre pit, wrap up the cuttings and place thesealed package in the garbage. Dont

dispose o the branches in compost ora recycle site, as the disease will re-cycle itsel. Usually chips are used asground cover or other trees and the

bacteria will spread to the new site.Be sure to clean your tools ater each

cut by dipping them in bleach or alco-hol, so you dont spread anything tosuccessive cuts.

Black Knot ungus is also on the

loose in local gardens. Its avouritehouse is mayday and chokecherry treebranches. You can spot it on branch-es by its black clumping, giving the

branch a barbed wire resemblance.Use the same procedure described orFire blight removal.

Every year, Wheatland County poststhe prohibited and noxious weed liston the County Website, where pictureso weeds that need to be pulled can

be seen. Some grow in ower beds and seem

pretty, like the noxious weed Hima-layan Balsam and sweet chamomile,

but i they arent removed seeds traveland inest crops. Farmers must employcostly weed killers to eradicate them.

In case you arent convinced, the Al-berta government site has an interac-tive map, showing where in the prov-ince prohibited weeds have spreadand are most common. See www.ag-ric.gov.ab.ca/app68/listings/weeds/

weeds_map.jspThe Town o Strathmore will be do-

ing their part to keep weeds down andwill be spraying starting Aug. 20. Theareas they will be covering are linkedin a map at www.townostrathmore.ca/news .A little vigilance in the garden can

Local artistic director Keith Hammrom Rosebud recently started a grass-roots project committed to bringingworld-class musical perormances tothe rural communities in the Badlands.

From July 29 through to and includ-ing Aug. 4 a spectacular lineup o someo Canadas fnest young chamber mu-sicians graced the humble stage at the

Rosebud Community Church.Three quarters o the string quartetconsisted o Sheila Ja rom Montrealon the Francesco Gobetti violin (1710-15) generously on loan to her by Cani-mex; Aaron Schwebel also rom Mon-treal on the violin; Arnold Choi on theAntonio Starivari cello generously onloan to him rom the Canada Councilor the Arts Musical Instrument Bank.

Making up the ourth in the quartetwas one o Rosebuds fnest youngmusicians, Keith Hamm on the viola.Hamm is the ounder and artistic di-rector o the Rosebud Chamber Musicestival. The quartet perormed the pieces

rom String Quartet, Op 17 No. 6 byFranz Joseph Haydn. It was a won-derully playul perormance as thestringed instruments came to lie un-der the fngers o the artists. The mu-

sic danced in the air as the our in-struments became one in the piece byHaydn.

Peter Longworth, an established pia-nist who has played all over the world,is one o Canadas most sought aterpianists o his generation. He gracedthe stage in Rosebud with his power-ul perormance rom Johann Sebas-tian Bachs Chaconne in d minor (BWV

1004). He preaced the piece with a a-vourite quote rom Johannes Brahms:On one stave, or a small instrument, the man writes a whole world o thedeepest thoughts and most poweruleelings. I I imagined that I could havecreated, even conceived the piece, I amquite certain that the excess o excite-ment and earth-shattering experiencewould have driven me out o my mind[4].All fve musicians, coming together

in Antonin Dvoraks Piano QuintetNo.1 in A major, Op.81, played the f-nal perormance. The music came aliveon the stage and enguled the audiencewith its powerul perormance.

Hamm was pleased with the turnoutover the weeks perormances in Rose-bud, Drumheller and Three Hills, andlooks orward to more events in theuture.

    Letters to the editor

To the EditorLeadership is a privilege and it is important that

communication within these roles is humanized, personal and respectul. A popular idiom actionsspeak louder than words resonates when reectingon the actions o local elected ofcials in the recentHeritage Days Parade. They ailed to respect properprotocol by demanding that they be placed in ronto our local MLA, Jason Hale. This did not go un-noticed by people watching the parade who com-mented on how important these individuals must seethemselves. This is one small yet public example oStrathmores current leadership. The world as we know it continues to change de-

spite a desire by some that it remain the same. Somethings should remain the same like respect and con-sideration o others. The way people discover andcreate news changed with the emergence o social

media. It has brought orward a growing awarenesso what people are seeking in leadership. Old schoolleadership that pushed its weight around no longerdraws support rom the general populace as theybecome aware o what used to be behind the scenes

incidents. With the upcoming municipal elections, it is im-

portant to know that the populace is watching whatthe elected ofcials are doing. There is a strong de-sire to see successul communities develop. Authen-ticity, transparency and respect are priorities in mak-ing collaborative relationships that help us transitionwith changes on the horizon as the number o urbandwellers increases. The privilege o serving our communities in public

ofce is something that more o us need to exerciseour will, courage, physical and mental toughness toparticipate in. Add a sense o humour and an abilityto handle stress and you may not believe the dier-ence you can make.

Nomination papers or all the positions are avail-able at the Town and the County ofces. Considertaking a leap into leadership and shaping the uture.

At the July 29th Strathmore Rural Fire Fighting

Association (SRFFA) meeting, a call went out toput aside personal arguments and think o thecommunity frst.

Think o the community. This shouldnt be per-sonal. We are protecting the community. We haveto keep that in mind, said Brad Garner, to allmembers. Two suspended frefghters were given the op-

portunity to return to duty under a one year inci-dent ree probation period. Both men have sel-lessly responded to the call and the communitiesneed by agreeing to return.

Some observers rom the Carseland communityelt the terms o reinstatement did not take intoconsideration the mens long standing service re-cord and they indicated the terms were too in-tense. Others questioned whether judgements

were being applied universally to all frefghterswithin the association. Garner hoped embers osimmering resentments in the community, ueledby a ew recent altercations and arguments overfre issues, could be dispersed so healing in theassociation can begin. There is still interest in theCarseland community to separate into two sepa-rate associations.

It remains to be seen whether President BruceRande can meet the challenge to bridge the cur-rent gap and bring both sides back together underone roo.

Rande committed to monitoring the situationclosely and said that he will take all necessarymeasures to restore normal operation in bothhalls. Carseland had only two to three membersresponding to the 11 calls done in June. Memberso the Strathmore crew responded to make up a

ull response crew. Carseland businessmen andcommunity members, observing at the meeting, were worried about inadequate fre coverage intheir area.

Crew numbers were down as some o the Carse-land members were on Leave o Absence, or per-sonal reasons. Rande said it is a volunteer serviceand i members needed leave, the Association can-not orce them to return. A recruiting drive will beheld in the near uture to boost volunteer num-bers. Also, a vote o confdence was given by theSRFFA to the interim Chie Mark Heilman, who iscurrently covering both halls.

He is the best person or the position. He hasstepped up and taken ack or something that wasnot o his doing, said Rande.I commend him andhave seen nothing but support or him.

The association has been through an inerno inthe last year, due to a bookkeeping scandal andresulting legal proceedings. The board has goneinto strict adherence o policies to rectiy mattersand put the association back on even ooting. Therecent deliverance o 2012 unding by the Countyo Wheatland helped the association pay $6,000 oback bills. However, a spot fre cropped up at theJuly 29th meeting, when Carseland Ag Society no-tifed them that a $12,000 mortgage payment hadbeen overlooked and was two years in arrears.

This requires a show o good aith, said AgPresident Rita Krugar. I need some kind o inor-mation to take back to the board. The SRFFA requested the documentation and

time to set a recommended action. We need a common sense solution and settle

this in the best way. Our intent is to pay but thetimeline is in question, said Rande. The board is maintaining a tight hold on its

spending, requiring receipts and quotes beoreapproving unds. Several department membershad paid or necessary equipment out o pocketand unds were not delivered unless receipts andapproval were given. The process let delays in equipment repairs,

minor purchases and department members need-ing recertifcation and drivers licensing.

Under current National Saety Standards and theAlberta Trafc Saety act, all frefghting vehiclesrequire regular maintenance, saety and equip-ment checks, trip reports, and extensive fve yearrecord keeping or all drivers o fre vehicles. Poli-cies need to be in place to ensure drivers are ade-quately qualifed, provided with training and their

driving skills evaluated. Any trafc inractions ordrivers have to be reported. I any o the stan-dards are not maintained, stringent penalties arelevied to the registered owners o the vehicle andthe drivers, and can even extend to persons load-ing, unloading, rearranging loads, record keepingor directing trafc, i it is proved that they wereaware that the standard requirements were notin place. Fule for Thought

By the time you read this, my amily and I willhave moved. Now, some o you may be sad, somemay be surprised, and some may even be planning acelebration (Ive already heard rumours o a block

party in the Cambridge area)!I actually told a ew Cambridge neighbours thattheir property values may go up, now that the Fulesare leaving (sorry about your luck, Strathmore Lakes)!

I have helped people move, and have grateullybeen helped, on many moves. In 1990, or example,we sold one house, moved into a basement rentalsuite, moved some stu to Canmore and back or asummer job, bought, and moved to a mobile home(thanks, Mr Lein!). Finally by December, we nishedat a split level house (I have come to know that Imay have burned some bridges here). In act, Debbought the last home at a wine and cheese party! She only called me over when the deal was sealed, and I had to sign something!

Now, because o all these moves, I took a lot ogood natured ribbing rom my teacher pals. Somewould say that my Hungarian gypsy background

was at work. Sure, my dads amily were Hungar-ian, but it doesnt mean were gypsies but I donteven know a gypsy!

Others meanly said it was because Hungarysbeen invaded so oten, your people are always onthe run (oh yes, comrade just park your RussianT-34 tank on my vegetable garden!)

Just because you may have moved ve times in aspan o six months why do they have to judge?Oh wait, yeah they do get to judge, because theydbeen moving me all those times! When we moved urniture and things to our latest

house, I never thought wed be there or 16 years. The problem was, we moved a lot o big, heavythings in to the basement beore it was ully nished. When the basement was done, it was impossible tomove out the large hide-a-bed!

My riend Brad and I tried every which way to turn, lit, and move it out. We even managed to almost getit up rom the basement, but we dragged the hide-a-beds eet across the newly painted walls, scarringthem in the process!

So we decided: enough was enough (I quietlyhated this hide-a-bed anyway, so the decision waseasy)!

My pal Brad and I grabbed a sledgehammerand axe, and began wailing away at this beast oa couch! There were couch bits, oam, metal, andshrapnel fying everywhere Oh, the humanity(Hindenberg reerence)! At times I heard Deb call, is everything alright

down there?Oh, everythings alright were just making

some urniture adjustments! We carried up the big-gest pieces rst, and on the third trip, Debbie asked, what are those things youre bringing up?

I answered: we had to take apart the hide-a-bed,weve numbered the pieces, and were bringing themup! In act, heres Part D, that matches up with PartC, that Brad brought up beore!

Debbie, being as smart as she is, didnt believe aword, and just shook her head. This was one hide-a-bed that would never have attitude again! It had togo, and we murdered it!

On one o my other riends moves, I ailed miser-ably! It was a bitterly cold January morning, and myriends stu had been in a trailer all night in -30degree temperature. Did I say all night?

Now, a smart person would think, hey this isricken cold be careul!

But no, I waded into the open truck trailer, andgrabbed on to the washing machine. I had only be-gun carrying this thing wearing gloves, when I real-ized, I had no grip. I threw o my gloves, clenchedthe washer, and began carting it down to (o course)the basement!

Part o the way down, my ngers elt like theywere on re! I tried to hold on, I swear I did, but I

couldnt! I loosened my grip, and my pal Scott, borethe ull brunt o the weight (I had rost bitten mynger pads, they were red, burning, and useless)! Ihad to go home, and I let them one mover short!

Not all parts o a move are unny, and while pack-ing up our things, and my parents photo albums, Iound something that took away my breath. I hadcome across my parents individual amily albums. In my mothers album, olded away careully, wasa short, typed note. I youve been with me or awhile, you know that two o my older brothers diedas babies. In the album, was a simple and neatlyolded letter. The letter was rom one o the nurses,a Catholic sister on the hospital sta. The letter saidhow sorry she, and the whole sta were, at the losso Baby John Fule. It was dated, Oct.10, 1955. I wasdumb-ounded. I had never seen this. I knew my two

older brothers died as babies, but here was a letterthat showed the tragic eelings o that hospitals sta.I thought about how preparations were made, ora baby who would never come home. Years later,my brothers are never ar rom my mind, and myremaining brother has come rom Vancouver to helpus. The move is on, I get to stay in Strathmore (by

choice), and my amily is intact. Everyone is stressedat our house with the move, but Im so grateul werealive to eel that stress.

So, bring it all on (as Deb would say), and lets getthis show on the road!

Strathmore Lakes, here come the Fules maybewell wind up with a CEE-MENT pond (like the Clam-pets)!

Movin on up to the west side!

Last month the town council adopteda new Emergency Response/PursuitPolicy at the request o the SolicitorGeneral Jonathon Denis. StrathmoreCommunity Peace Ofcer Teresa Fuchsbrought the policy orward or approv-al in July.

Our president o the Alberta Com-munity Police Association who does theEVOC course that we took, EmergencyVehicle Operations (Course), this was apolicy that he put into place at Provostwhen he worked there, said Fuchs.

Ater we fnished the course he sentme a copy o his policy and being the

president o Community Peace Ofcersit was a very good policy. The policy is to help establish guide-

lines and proper procedures or re-sponding to emergencies, properreporting procedures and trainingguidelines or all ofcers in the depart-ment.

Beore being able to respond to anemergency call and utilizing emergen-cy equipment, each peace ofcer musthave proper authorization. In order tothe have the proper authorization, eachpeace ofcer must complete a 40 hourEmergency Vehicle Operations Coursethat is based on police curriculum. Allpeace ofcers must also take EVOC re-certifcation training every fve years.

According to the policy, peace of-cers may respond to emergency callsand use emergency equipment when

there is an injury collision, while pro-viding backup to police or peace of-cers when there is the belie that the o-fcer is in serious danger and the peaceofcer is the closest assistance avail-able, when attending a fre or medicalemergency at the specifc request othe fre or EMS department and or anyemergency situation i requested by thepolice to attend in an emergency re-sponse capacity.Any peace ofcer that chooses to re-

spond in an emergency capacity is tonotiy the police by radio o their re-sponse to that particular situation.

In the case o a pursuit the policystates that a motor vehicle pursuitpresents an extreme risk to the public

saety and shall not be conducted byany peace ofcer appointed under thePeace Ofcer Act. The peace ofcer isexpected to contact their local policeand inorm them o the situation, givethem the vehicle make and direction otravel. There are stipulations and cir-cumstances when a peace ofcer maybe closing the distance, or involved in acatch up situation which arent classedas a pursuit.

I read this over and its a great look-ing policy, I like the directions especial-ly in regards to pursuitsthat directionis o course that they shall not happen, said Councillor Bob Sobol at the Julymeeting. The policy provides specifc guide-

lines or other situations a peace ofcermay be involved in regarding emergen-cy response or pursuit.

    Times Reporter

Neighbourhood Watch has come toStrathmore as a way to respond to re-ports o crimes last year. Communitymembers, along with the Strathmore

RCMP, ormed the group to help tryto bring an end to what seemed likean increasing amount o property andvehicle-related crimes.

Essentially it was ormed in responseto crime that was occurring specifcallyin Strathmore and a way to get com-munity members involved with whatshappening in Strathmore, said Const.Shannon White with the StrathmoreRCMP detachment and liaison or thegroup.

Neighbourhood Watch is an extraset o eyes out there in the communitylooking or those suspicious activitiesbecause no one knows their commu-nity better than those who live in it. A

police car driving by may not recog-nize a vehicle as not belonging on thatstreet, but a neighbour who knows thattheir neighbour is out o town and thatvehicle shouldnt be there will.

The goal o Neighbourhood Watchis, with the support o the RCMP, learnto recognize suspicious activities, whento report to police, encouraging peopleto get to know their neighbours andprovide those additional eyes in thearea.White said once every two months

a meeting is held or NeighbourhoodWatch members. She said they go overa number o topics like crime statistics, how to report a crime, when to reporta crime, when to call 911 and recog-

nizing suspicious activity. The meetingsand training helps dierentiate whatmay be just a person walking down thestreet versus someone suspicious scop-ing out the area.

I there are any concerns in a neigh-bourhood a watch member lives in,they can also be brought orward intothe meetings or discussion.

I think one o the most surprisingthings that I discovered is that peopledidnt know what number to call. Whatwere fnding is people are calling 911

    Neighbourhood Watchcomes to Strathmore

or everything because they dont know the right number tocall, and whats happening is were fnding a very delayeddispatch, said White.

People didnt realize the 934-3968 is the ofce hours butor non-emergency ofce hours its 934-3535.The dierence between Citizens On Patrol and Neighbour-

hood Watch is you dont have to leave your house; its just

about being aware about whats going on in your communityand knowing your neighbours.

People are calling in now more when they recognize sus-picious activity and weve been really successul in locatingand charging people who are responsible, said White.

She is seeing success rom the program and said they arecatching the suspects. White said i someone does call insuspicious activity its important they are available or callback. I its a crime in progress, White said, thats a 911 calland the caller should remain on the phone to keep the policeinormed about what is happening, i the suspect has takeno and which direction.Anyone can join Neighbourhood Watch; White says the

more people involved the better. Those wanting to get in-volved can call the Strathmore detachment at 403-934-3968and ask or Const. Shannon White.

    Canadian Blood ServiCeS

As a result o nearly 12,000 unflledappointments so ar this summer, cou-pled with constant hospital demand,Canadian Blood Services is orecastinga need or 51,000 appointments to beflled between now and Labour Day toreplenish stocks.

For that reason, Canadian Blood Ser-vices has extended the Blood Signaluntil Sept. 3. The Blood Signal is a callto action or Canadians to rally togeth-er and book a blood donation whenthe need is greatest - like now.

Canadian Blood Services operatesa national system and we are able todraw on our national reserves at timeslike these, says Mike Nichol, RegionalDirector o Donor and Clinic Services.Every summer is a challenge, but this

year the trend is especially concerningas there are 51,000 appointments tofll between now and Sept. 3 to keepblood inventory at an acceptable level.

The summer months are always chal-lenging or Canadas blood supply andwe are not alone; donations are sot inother countries as well. Blood systemsin the U.S. and the U.K. have recentlyissued urgent appeals or blood donorsdue to ewer donations being madethis summer and overall blood inven-tory levels alling.

    No patient goes without blood,

Mike Nichol. But with so many openappointments we need Canadians tobook and donate now.

We ask those who already have an

appointment to make every eort tokeep it and, i you can, bring a riendto donate. To book an appointment iseasy, please visit www.blood.ca or call1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283).Making an appointment now will en-sure that patient needs are met thissummer.

Residents o Strathmore are asked togive blood at their local community do-nor clinic at the Strathmore Civic Cen-tre (120 Brent Boulevard) on Friday,Aug. 23 rom 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Canadian Blood Services is a nation-al, not-or-proft charitable organiza-tion that manages the supply o bloodand blood products in all provinces

    and territories outside o Quebec.
