The Liberals and other oppo-sition parties may have hoped to force the Conservatives out of power by calling an election for May 2, but the results quickly showed that Canada still wants a Conservative government.

“We really believed that we would see a day where we saw a majority government. It’s really hard as a minority to really set your sails and sail in the direc-tion that the country needs to go,” said incumbent Crowfoot MP Kevin Sorenson.

“It has worked out very well for us with a majority govern-ment, but still it should be a warning for opposition parties that keep just believing that we’ll have an election regard-less of the outcome. Mr. Ignatieff wishes he wouldn’t have had the election. Mr. Ducceppe is sitting there scratching his head won-dering why they were so anxious to bring this government down. They were decimated, and so ob-viously it has worked out well for us.”

Sorenson had three campaign offices set up in his constituency this year, including ones in Strath-more, Camrose and Three Hills. He said Canadians have spoken, and said that the Conservatives have proved themselves over the past five and a half years. Soren-son said they will be bringing the budget back to balance, and that the strategy they are using will help with that.

“We will honour the promises we’ve made in the last election, and that is to keep taxes down, to bring our budget into a bal-anced position, and to continue to lead in the way that we have in all the other ways as well,” said Sorenson.

er choice, and it’s a choice between high taxes that the NDP and the op-position will bring, or lower taxes that we will have. It’s the difference between big government and small government. It’s the difference be-tween family friendly legislation that we bring forward and the big govern-ment knows best,” said Sorenson.

“I think some of those are the is-sues that are going to be the biggest.”

Sorenson said as much as Harper has shone in a minority government, he believes he will blossom as a ma-jority government leader. The last time a government was a majority was the Liberals in 2004, which re-ceived a vote of non-confidence and became a minority government later that year. Winning a majority govern-ment means big things for the Con-servatives.

“It means that we aren’t always

having to go to the Liberals or to the NDP, and beg and plead for them to not show up and vote or to vote with us. It means that we can sit down and work with them, but we don’t always have the axe over our head,” said So-renson.

“I think that it’s going to be a re-markable thing. The best economists in the world were saying whatever we have I hope it’s a majority because a majority is stability and confidence, and that’s what the economy needs right now.”

The election cost taxpayers approx-imately $300million, and put many important projects on hold. Out of the 52,557 votes for the Crowfoot riding, Sorenson received 44,114 of them. The Conservatives have 166 seats in the House of Commons; NDP has 103, Liberals 34, Bloc Quebecois 4, Other 1.

Thank You Crowfoot Constituents,

Kevin Sorenson, M.P.Crowfoot

for your support on May 2nd. I am truly grateful for this vote of confidence and promise to continue to do my utmost as the Crowfoot Member of Parliament in the House of Commons.

I look forward to representing all of you in the 41st Parliament under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

“I can not express how thrilled I am tonight. Honestly this is one of the greatest moments. The first time was sweet because I was elected; this is just as sweet because we have a majority government. In the life of a politician, it’s not just that you’ve won locally, but we’ve been accepted all across the country in good numbers.”

He said back in 2001 or 2002, the party was in a tough position. He said he had supported Stockwell Day, at the time but was also one of the men that went to a former MP and asked him to help lead this government. So-renson said that former MP was Ste-phen Harper. Sorenson said Harper came to Alberta, and he had the joy of taking him around the constituency introducing him to people.

When Sorenson was watching all of the NDP seats come in, in the begin-ning of the votes being tallied, he said he was thinking it is going to be a dif-ferent type of parliament. There will be an opposition that is very socialist, very left, who had been looking at in-creasing taxes.

He said the Conservatives would continue with their low tax plan, and bring Canada out of the recession. Sorenson said he thinks decorum in parliament will be better because they will all have to work for the best of the country without the chance of another election being forced in the near future.

New utility rates will barely affect average userMario PrusinaTimes Editor

A new utility rate aimed at conserv-ing water is causing quite the stir for the Town of Strathmore.

At a special council meeting on April 26, the potable water rate was raised, but the fixed charge rate was reduced by 50 per cent. The ultimate result is a slight increase to the average water user.

Exaggerated reports suggested that utility rates will climb as much as 200 per cent, which angered town council.

The average resident, who uses 11

cubic metres a month, will see a 0.46 cent increase in their water rate. On the higher scale, if a household uses 15 cubic metres, their rate increase would be $3.98. On the lower end, if a house-hold uses just five cubic metres, their water bill will be reduced by $4.82.

Obviously, large families and big commercial businesses that use lots of water, such as car washes and hotels, will see a much higher utility bill.

To see exactly how much your water rate will be effected, look at your aver-age monthly usage on your bill, then visit the Town of Strathmore website at www.strathmore.ca.

The first annual Strathmore Pet Expo, held on April 30, was a huge success, exceeding even the organizers expectations. Melissa Crispin-Piche of Tail Waggers Dog

Walking Service, and Melissa David, Quality Dog Grooming, wanted to show residents every-thing you need for your pet can be found in town. The women paired up to bring the expo to town.“We’re so thankful for all the support,” said David.

“It’s fantastic. The support from the community is just overwhelming,” said Crispin-Piche.There were 760 people who attended the Pet Expo, and the women said the amount of food raised for the

Wheatland Food was amazing. “The foodbank has been through the roof, we’ve already emptied one bin and we’re starting again,” said David, on

the day of the expo. The expo raised $210 for the food bank, in addition to a large amount of non-perishable items. Every table donated

a product or service which was raffled off, with all of the money to be split between the non-profit organizations that were in attendance. Between the door prizes and the silent auction, over $300 was raised for charity.

Both women agreed they can’t even begin to thank residents enough for all of the support they have given to help make the first annual Pet Expo the success that it was. Of course, with any new event, there are the occasional little hiccups. Even though there were signs asking people not to bring their pets with them to the expo, quite a few

still did. “Next year we’re going to have tags for the vendors. A bright coloured tag or something that will say I’m a vendor dog, I’m okay,” said Crispin-Piche.

Also in attendance was Miss Teen Wheatland County-World, Shelbi-Rae Ramsay. David said she was a great ambassador and they were fortunate to have her there.

Due to its success, they have already booked space for the second annual expo, which will take place April 21, 2012.

The Town of Strathmore will commence its Annual Spring street sweeping on May 2, 2011, weather permitting. Please ensure that all vehicles are parked in driveways and do not over hang the roadway. The cleanliness of our Town depends on your co-operation in keeping roads clear of parked cars.

Street Sweeping signs will be posted in your area to advise that street sweeping will be completed the next day in that particular area. Watch for signs as they will be set out a minimum of 24 hours prior to sweeping. Please assist the Town by removing your vehicles from the street. Ve-hicles left parked on signed streets will be ticketed and towed.

Residents can assist the process by sweeping the sidewalk in front of your homes and keeping debris out of catch basins. Citizens are remind-ed to stay a safe distance from sweepers and equipment and to slow down while passing crews.

The Town appreciates your cooperation.

WATeR uTiliTy RATe AMenDMenTOn April 26, 2011 council voted in favor of Bylaw 11-14 to amend the

Utility Rates and Penalties Bylaw. In order to encourage responsible water usage and conservation of this limited resource, council has decided that a change in the Water Rate structure is required. The Town of Strathmore will be migrating to a rate structure that has more emphasis placed on consumption as of May 1. The fixed rate for water consumption will be reduced by 50% for all 5/8” meters, to $6.83 per month. The variable water rate is then increased to $1.60/m3. The average household using 11m3 of water per month or less will not see an increase in the cost of the water portion of your utility bill. This migration to a “user pay” system will allow individuals to see more savings for their water conservation efforts.

She may look a little different, and talk a little different, but her strength and determination rival most. Dee-Ann Wagner-Mercer was diagnosed with Neurofi-bromatosis 2, NF2, also known as Bilateral Acoustic NF, BAN, when she was 13-years-old.

“In high school I started to no-tice my hearing changing,” said Wagner-Mercer.

“In 2001 things changed dras-tically, right after I got married.”

May is Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month, and the slo-gan for NF2 is ‘never give up’. Neurofibromatosis 1, NF1, oc-curs in one out of every 3,000 births. Many people may have one or two small café-au-lait co-loured spots, which is a charac-terization of NF1. Adults with six or more larger spots likely have neurofibromatosis.

NF2 is more rare, occurring in one out of 25,000 births. Mul-tiple tumors and lesions, mostly occurring on the cranial and spi-nal nerves, are NF2’s most com-mon characterization. Hearing loss in the teenage years, or ear-ly twenties is generally the first symptom. After a friend of hers, who also has NF2, posted a vid-eo about her condition, helped give Wagner-Mercer the push she needed to speak out.

“I’ve been meaning to for a long time. I’m really tired of the stares, and my daughter has re-cently been bullied at school be-cause of how I look,” said Wag-ner-Mercer.

“People are usually afraid of what they don’t know, so if I ed-ucate people then they won’t be so afraid of us.”

Kayla-Ann was genetically tested when she was two-years-old. She is now six. Kayla-Ann doesn’t have the same genetic characters, which Wagner-Mer-cer said was a very happy day for her.

There is a 50/50 chance it could be passed on regardless of

age, race, and sex. Wagner-Mercer said she finds

residents of Strathmore fairly accepting of her. They may not know what’s wrong with her, but because it’s a small town many people know her, and know that she is deaf.

“I want everybody to know why (I look like this) Lots of people judge by your appear-ance and they don’t realize they’re judging you, they have no idea,” said Wagner-Mercer.

Removing the tumors can cause facial paralysis among oth-er things. It can be quite risky for the patient. Some of the tumors are inoperable. Every six months Wagner-Mercer goes for a NF2 study at NIH national institute of health. She said she takes part in the study because doctors are trying to understand NF2 better.

“It’s getting hard now that Kayla is in school, a little hard, time consuming,” said Wagner-Mercer.

She said the study helps her keep her NF2 in check. She also said she thinks it’s very impor-tant to go for the studies because it may help doctors get closer to a cure, and it’s important to un-derstand NF2 is what needs to be done.

“When you go in to talk to doctors, you get the same thing. It’s like you’re supposed to treat me, and (yet) I need to educate (them),” said Wagner-Mercer.

Janet Murdoch met Wagner-Mercer and her family almost four years ago. Murdoch spends a lot of time with her friend. She taught herself how to do sign language through Dee-Ann.

“If my daughter wasn’t here I don’t think I would be here to-day. I have no choice, I have to set an example for my daughter, and no matter how hard things are it can always get worse,” said Wagner-Mercer.

“I just keep going because of my daughter.”

Neuro...WHAT???? Dee-Ann WAgner-Mercer

May is neurofibromatosis Awareness Month. (nF for short) Don’t know what that is? You’re not alone!A friend of mine, whom I share the same genetic disorder

with, has inspired me to write about my fight. She just recently unleashed a very heart warming, touching, moving video about her struggles with nF2 that I can’t say enough about. She’s a private person, much like myself, yet she shared this very personal reality to the world! Why would she do this? To spread awareness, and help get us one-step closer to a cure!

My name is Dee-Ann Wagner-Mercer. I’m a 31-year-old mother of Kayla-Ann, age 6. We live in Strathmore and have lived in the area for nine years. I’m deaf, I look different, I walk different, many avoid me, but despite my differences, I am still very much the same as anyone else.

I have neurofibromatosis Type II (nF2), a neurological disorder, and wanted to share my reality with the community to help bring some understanding.

I wasn’t born deaf and other than an obvious visual impairment, I didn’t look much different from my peers. I used to be a very social person.

My parents raised me like my other siblings and at times I hated them for it, but all kids hate their parents at one point and now that I’m a mom myself, I have come to realize they have given me the most amazing gift! I was treated “normally”.

Imagine one day waking up totally deaf! Your whole world falls silent and you lose a majority of your “friends” because they didn’t bother to want to try to communicate with you.

Imagine being in a room full of people, all laughing, talking, sharing and only being able to watch, not take part! not being included! nF2 has challenged me with many things, some I’ve bounced back from, some have changed my life forever, but I’m a fighter and nF2 has made me a stronger person! I am who I am because of it, but nF2 doesn’t run my life! neVer gIVe UP!

Did you wave at me and say hello? I’m not being rude by not returning the wave; I’m legally blind and don’t see very far. Did I not reply to a polite question? I’m not being disrespectful that I didn’t answer; you are just not communicating with me in a way I can understand! everyone assumes a person can hear and I’ve been struggling trying to find my place in the hearing world. I’m trying! I miss the hearing world! I long for it, but it rejects me in so many ways.

May is nF awareness month and I want to spread some word! Below are some facts about nF1, nF2 and nF’s third form,

Schwannomatosis.neurofibromatosis 1 (nF1): also known as von recklinghausen

nF or Peripheral nF occurs in 1 in 3,000 births. It is characterized by multiple cafe-au-lait spots and neurofibromas on or under the skin. enlargement and deformation of bones and curvature of the spine (scoliosis) may also occur. Occasionally, tumors may develop in the brain, on cranial nerves, or on the spinal cord. About 50 per cent of people with nF1 also have learning disabilities.

neurofibromatosis 2 (nF2): also known as Bilateral Acoustic nF (BAn), is much more rare. It occurs in 1 in 25,000 births. nF2 is characterized by multiple tumors on the cranial and spinal nerves, and by other lesions of the brain and spinal cord. Tumors affecting both of the auditory nerves are the hallmark. Hearing loss begins in the teens or early twenties and is generally the first symptom.

Schwannomatosis: a rare form of nF that has only recently been recognized recently appears to affect around 1 in 40,000 individuals. It is less well understood than nF1 and nF2, and features may vary greatly between patients. (Info taken from www.ctf.org)

There are many more things I could share about nF, but for more information about nF, please go to www.ctf.org or www.albertanf.org

Summer is almost here and with it is the smell of hamburgers and hotdogs being grilled on the BBQ. It also brings the 23 annual M&M Meat Shops Charity BBQ Day, which benefits the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada, CCFC.

“The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada has been M&M Meat Shops corporate charity for 23 years. In that time M&M has raised over $20 million, just through the charity BBQ in May. Then we also have what we call a star program in the store,” said Brenda Impey, who owns the Strath-more and Chestermere locations with her husband Robin.

“So you donate a toonie and we give you a star, you put your name on it, and we post it in the store. Just lots of little things like that have added up to the huge amount of money, all the money that we raise goes for research, and it’s all volun-teer work and efforts that go into it.”

The founder of M&M Meat Shops said it was a little-known disease and globally Canadians are the most affected, which is why the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation is the corporate choice. Canada has among the highest incidence of Crohn’s dis-ease and ulcerative colitis in the world, two similar yet distinct conditions also known as inflamma-tory bowel disease (IBD). The public profile of

these “taboo” diseases, however, continues to be low. There are more than 200,000 Canadians suf-fering from IBD. It is a painful and unpredictable disorder. There is no known cause or cure, and the number of cases continues to grow.

This year Amanda Holmes, daughter of famous contractor Mike Holmes, is supporting the charity BBQ day. Amanda was diagnosed with Crohn’s as a teenager, and both she and her dad are happy to be on board with M&M Meat Shops.

The store is well known in town for helping people trying to fundraise. They do-on and-off site BBQ’s. Impey said both stores are booking Satur-days already, so if people are interested in doing a fundraiser they should contact Brenda or Robin Impey right away. M&M Meat Shops will provide the BBQ, and all of the fixings. All an interested party needs to do is provide the volunteers to cook the burgers. There are also BBQ fundraising infor-mation packages available.

“Our town is awesome, we have a great town, the community is so supportive and eager to step out and help a good cause,” said Impey.

The charity BBQ day begins at 10 a.m. on May 7 until 4 p.m. in the parking of M&M Meat Shops. For a minimum donation of $2.50, people will receive a burger or hotdog, a drink, and a bag of chips. For those who may still be hungry after their burger or hotdog there will be M&M Meat Shops strawberry shortcake bar selling for an additional $2.

The band Silo is working on becoming a house-hold name. The band was formed in 2007, but the current members have only been together for about a year and a half. Recently the band signed up with a management company and on April 25 they received good news.

“We just got released across Canada to 131 rock stations, our single just got released to-day (April 25),” said Clay Watson, lead singer for the band, known to his fans as Cash.

He said the man-agement company is tracking the prog-ress of the song “Paper Note” in To-ronto, and is hoping with the release big things will happen for the guys.

Four of the mem-bers live in Strath-more, and one of them, Mat Rapuano and his business partners recently opened Strathmore’s first night club, COOTERS.

All of the members have a stage name; Mat Rapuano is the drummer and nicknamed Raps; Clayton Firmstone, lead guitar, is Young Blood; Mitch Webb, is vocals and rhythm guitar and is also known as Itchy; and Jordan Hogan, the bass player, is called Jordo.

“The reason we have the stage names is, be-cause it kind of separates our personal life from our band life, and it just kind of gives us that alter-ego which is nice,” said Watson.

Watson started the band, and said the first per-son to leave was the drummer. He and Raps have rebuilt the band together.

“Ever since me and Raps hooked up, no looking back and we just took off and every year things are getting bigger and better. We have a couple of big opportunities after the summer festival tour,” said Watson.

Before Raps and the other guys joined the band, the name Silo was already chosen. Watson said

the original guys couldn’t decide what to name the band, so he told everyone to write down every cool thing they saw over the following week.

“I was actually the one that saw the silo, and I said ‘you know we live in this area and there’s so many grain silos ev-erywhere but to be cool there are mis-sile silos as well’,” said Watson.

“I said, ‘what do you guys think about silo, its short,

and sweet’. We kind of did a vote on it, and every-body voted for it. It’s kind of stuck with us ever since.”

The band is going to be busy over the summer months. They will be headlining at the Strathmore Poker Run on June 24 and 25, and the Harleys and Hotrods Poker Run on July 9. They will be play-ing at Boonstock, where they are opening for Per-fect Circle, Three Days Grace, Five Finger Death Punch and a number of other bands.

“There’s a bunch of huge bands, and then two weeks later, we’re actually playing the main stage

Local band Silo makes their Canadian debutat the first ever Sturgis North motorbike festival in Salmon Arm, B.C,” said Watson.

The plan for the band is to one day quit their day jobs and make a living from their music. Watson said all the members are dedicated to making things work.

“It’s something you have to do though, you can’t just sit in one place and expect everything to happen, you have to get out, tour, collect fans, all that stuff,” said Watson.

While the band will do covers, they do write all of their own original music. To find out more about Silo, or to hear what they are putting out, visit www.thesilonation.com.

Silo was recently released on 131 radio stations across Canada and will be playing in Strathmore again in late June.

At 1:40 a.m. on March 22 a fire raged through a home at the corner of Briarwood Road and Briarwood Crescent in Strathmore. Four neighbouring homes were evacuated for the safety of the occupants due to the severity of the fire and wind direction. The occupants of the residence where the fire started were not home at the time. A second residence next to the first, was damaged by the fire.

All Strathmore residents may be shocked with their next utility bill, when an increase of 154 per cent to the sewer levy is indicated on the bill.

“We commissioned the new wastewa-ter treatment plant this year, so basically that increases our capacity here in town for wastewater treatment,” said Jesse Parker, Director of Engineering and Op-erations for the town

The town also increased their visibil-ity for the accounting, previously bills showed a 50/50 split between water and wastewater. Parker said because of their negotiation with EPCOR on contract pricing there will be better visibility as

to what the cost of each utility is, and there is now a bit of a higher allocation on the sewer side that has been correct-ed this year.

“The variable sewer rate back in 2010 was .63 cents per cubic metre of potable water used. We had a $1.15 million defi-cit on the sewer side of things for 2011, so that required an increase to the vari-able sewer rate to a $1.60, or an increase of .97 cents per cubic metre. So it’s a $1.60 per cubic metre, is what the new rate is,” said Parker.

“We knew that the prices were going to increase as a result of the new plant but didn’t really have an appreciation that they were going to be quite so sub-stantial.”

The increase ties into the amount of potable water used, said Parker. The av-erage potable water use in a month is approximately 11 cubic metres, so an in-crease of $1 per cubic metre is only an increase of $11. For high potable water

users, who use approximately 30 cubic metres per month it’s a $30 increase a month.

He said what the town tries to do is have the utilities try to fund themselves, and he said if they weren’t doing that, then they would basically have to fund it through taxation. Parker said the change to the water rates is not a result of the cost increasing, and said it’s more of a philosophical change between variable and fixed rates. Parker said he is not sure if the costs will go down for 2012.

“Until we have a little more certainty with some of the operation costs and some of the disposal costs associated with the waste from the plant, we don’t know. We’re working to try to reduce some of those costs but we’re not sure exactly how much we’ll be able to re-duce them.”

More information about the utility rates can be found on the town’s web-site.

Carseland publiC benefit Club

“In July 1912 a group of thirty-two Carseland and district women founded the Carseland Public Benefit Club. Over the years their undertakings were many and varied including helping local families in need, public assistance to local chil-dren and flowers for the sick. During the wars they had an extensive program of knitting socks and sweaters, and sending food parcels to the boys overseas. The Carseland PB Club also assisted in the finish-ing and furnishing of the new Hall, catering and planning, preparing and hosting bridal showers for local brides and bridegrooms.”

– Quote from ‘Trails to the Bow – Carseland and Cheadle Chronicles’

Since 1912 the Carseland Public Benefit Club’s intention has been to augment programs for those in need as well as provide a service to improve community welfare.

As a not-for-profit organization, the PB Club ex-ists solely to promote the health, well being, safety, and education of the general population of the Carseland district. For ninety-nine years the PB Club attempts to fill or enhance any void in needed service areas that relate or affect Carseland and its surrounding population. The PB Club is not facil-ity driven, nor sports or agriculturally focused, but has supported a variety of populations within the larger county area (i.e.: seniors, children, maternity, voluntary associations).

Historically the PB Club has been for female members only. However this was more due to the fact that the men were either working the land or serving in the armed forces. The division of la-bor was so much more distinct back then; females predominantly did stitching and cooking. In 1998, “open membership” was discussed and it was agreed that any community member was welcome to join. There has yet to be a male member. The Carseland Public Benefit Club does have a broad-based membership of ladies living in and around Carseland town-ship.

A wide array of events and programs enhanced the community through PB Club efforts. They in-clude:

• aiding medical treatment programs by fur-nishing and providing equipment of the maternity room at the Valley General Hospital in Strathmore;

• providing relief to the poor by semi-annual do-nations to the Wheatland Food Bank;

• publishing of Carseland and Cheadle chroni-cles book “Trails By The Bow” (1971) and ‘More Trails to the Bow’ (2007)

• providing further education opportunities or informational sessions in a variety of topics (i.e. fire safety, health, local history)

The membership of the PB Club establishes and

provides all program delivery, and all programs benefit the local community and extended county, not the club members’ self-interest.

In April 2012 the Club will celebrate their 100th Anniversary. Because their original undertakings included extensive support to the Red Cross (for example: knitting socks for deployed soldiers, sew-ing bandages and slings, and maintaining a Prison-er of War Fund) they have chosen a military theme

to celebrate their centennial. The Club believes the power of future community success lies within our next generation and, in this theme, has invited the Alberta Army Cadet League to participate in their cel-ebration; showcasing their train-ing, discipline and commitment of youth to building our nation.

Feature Decade: 1912 – 1922Feature Decade Member: Mrs. anna berquist

Anna Berquist (nee Fiksdal), with her husband Bill, settled in the Carseland area in 1908. She was very active in the church and community, being voted Vice President of the original Bow Valley La-dies Aid Society in 1910 and hosting the January meeting of the Carseland Public Benefit Club in 1913. An enthusiast of nature, Anna took much pride in her flowers and plants. The community helped Anna and Bill celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in June 1931 at the site of their beauti-ful homestead near the first half-section purchased. The Berquist house currently sits at Aspen Crossing in Mossleigh, back amongst beautiful plants and flowers, anticipating refurbishing.

PB Club events from this decade:• In 1914 PB Club members accepted respon-

sibility of sewing bandages, slings, and nurse’s aprons for Red Cross. Many hours of many meet-ings were spent visiting over fabric.

• A flu epidemic prevailed in the region; no PB Club meetings held between October 1918 and February 1919.

• ‘Prisoner of War’ dues paid by Carseland PB Club members up to January 1, 1919 were re-di-rected and donated to the Red Cross - “the prison-ers were released and would need no further sup-port” (quote from 1920’s minutes).

• A banquet celebrating the return of soldiers was held November 11, 1919 organized by a com-mittee consisting of Mrs. Allen, Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Bishop, Miss Alicia Phillips and Mrs. G. Field.

The Carseland Public Benefit Club, PB Club, is one of Albert’s oldest women’s institutes. 2012 will mark their 100th year.

“In each month leading up to the event, which is April 7, 2012, we’re going to feature a decade and just talk about three or four things the club did, three or four things that were going on in the world and maybe a member that was present and (see if there) are any connections to the community still,” said Teri McKinnon, with the club.

The theme is Past, Present and Future. The past will be about what started the club, the present will be what they have been up to, and for the future they have invited the army cadet league to be a part of it. McKinnon said this is because the past had a lot to do with supporting the soldiers overseas. The club believes the future lies within the next generation, and if they are going to fea-ture the next generation then the cadets should be a part of it.

The first week of every month the Strathmore Times will highlight each new decade up until the centennial celebrations in April 2012.

councillors updating them on the road conditions within the county. He said one of the biggest problems now is due to the roads that flooded, and Public Works are still trying to look at ways to alleviate the situation. A few of the roads are completely impassable due to the extreme amounts of damage. Duck Lake Road will be reopened. However, people will need to contact the RCMP to receive a permit granting them access on the road.

SidewalkS Rosebud will be getting new side-

walks this year. There are funds avail-able through the Streets Improvement Program, SIP, to help fix up sidewalks in the hamlets. Gleichen, Cluny, Carse-land and Rosebud all have access to the

funding, and David Churchill, Manager of Transportation and Infrastructure for the county, said there will be a change next year which will allow Cheadle, and other hamlets, access to the SIP funds. A motion passed for a curb, gut-ter, sidewalk and colour to the sidewalk lining the old Mercantile building in Rosebud. Four council members were in favour of the motion, which also in-dicates Rosebud School of the Arts will cover the costs of ripping up the current sidewalk, and the costs of the colour. A motion was also made for 60 metres of new sidewalk to be built in the hamlet. Gleichen will also have sidewalk repairs done this year.

Cheadle lionS Food grainS County councillors have agreed to

continue to support the Cheadle Lions Food Grains project in the same man-ner they have for the past few years, by purchasing two acres. Councillors Bren-da Knight, Glenn Koester and Bernice Bland were opposed to the motion.

split over three years, to Hope College as a development sponsorship. The money will provide scholarships to Wheatland County residents who attend the college.

Four young gentlemen from Standard School presented their proposal of Low Flow Showerheads to the panel of judges of Agrium’s Caring For Our Watersheds competition and came away with sixth place finish on May 1 at the Calgary Zoo.

Christopher Everett (Grade 7), Jestin Krap-Ross (Grade 8), Michael Kschesin-ski (Grade 8), and Christian Rousselle (Grade 8), with the help of their teacher, Tiffany Phillips, did their school proud, winning $150 for their group with a matching grant of $150 to the school.

The Standard students’ presentation focused on low-flow showerheads as an inexpensive yet effective way to signifi-cantly reduce the amount of water usage in their village. As part of the project they will be distributing flyers in the commu-nity, outlining their findings, encouraging residents to make the change and enjoy lower water bills.

The Caring For Our Watersheds pro-gram is an environmental educational competition that encourages creativity and rewards students for the solutions they identify. Caring For Our Watersheds partners with communities to create fo-cused solutions to local watershed issues.

Students researched their local water-shed, identified an environmental con-cern and came up with a realistic solu-tion. The researched ideas needed to be explained in an approximately 1000 word proposal, including visuals, models,

and graphics. Independent Judges read 110 propos-

als and advanced the top 10 in the Grades 7-9 category and the top eleven in the Grades 10-12 category. They were judged on innovation, environmental impact, comprehensive scope, communication, budget, realistic solutions and visuals. Both categories competed at the same time in different locations at the Zoo.

The contestants had five minutes to ex-plain their ideas to a panel of judges and a public audience. The written score and verbal score were combined to determine the placement of the finalists.

Of the 20 finalists in Grades 7-12, Stan-dard was only one of two rural schools represented, the other being from Milk River, with the rest from Calgary.

Each year Agrium invites students to submit proposals that answer the ques-tion: “WHAT CAN YOU DO TO IMPROVE YOUR WATERSHED?”

The program rewards the students and the schools who submit the most cre-ative, thought-provoking and innovative ideas.

The success of Caring For Our Water-sheds relies on local residents who want to make a positive difference in their community. Tasks and assignments come in all skill levels and time commitments - and range from classroom speakers to individuals who help set up the winning exhibits.

For more information or to submit pro-posals for the next year go to www. Car-ingForOurWatersheds.com.

The Boys and Girls Club of Airdrie, BGCA, – Strathmore Club, is once again bringing summer camps to the commu-nity for those who are interested.

This is only the second year for the camps, and already things are growing and changing.

“What’s new this year is we’re going to do 30 kids instead of just 15, but they’ll still just see the daily day camps,” said Shannon Zieman, Program Coordinator for BGCA-Strathmore Club.

The camps run for eight weeks begin-

ning on July 4, and offer a variety of ac-tivities for youth ages 6 to 12. Last year the kids had a chance to participate in things such as inline skating, crafts, trea-sure hunts and various other sports.

Registration for members only will be taking place at the Days Inn on May 17 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. For non-members registration is May 18 at the Re/Max office from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. The camps cost $100 a week for mem-bers, and are an additional $20 for non-members.

For more information call or email Shannon Zieman at 403-934-4521 or [email protected].

Nearly 40 players from Southern Al-berta took part in Hockey Alberta’s U15 camp April 29-May 1 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

The camp, which is designed to intro-duce young athletes to the Team Alberta program, was the first of seven weekend sessions taking place in the province this spring.

“It was extremely good – I felt like we did a lot of really good things with the kids in two and half days,” said Troy Muspratt, Regional Development Co-ordinator for Hockey Alberta south. “It was an opportunity to introduce them to the Team Alberta program.

“It’s just another program that Hockey Alberta puts out there to try to develop the grassroots program in smaller areas around the province.”

Players took part in four on-ice ses-sions during the weekend, mixed in with some off-ice training and Hockey Alberta program information.

“Off the ice, we do some things like preparation for camp - we did a dryland

session that worked purely with stick-handling and things that they can do at home,” said Muspratt. “On the ice, what we were trying to get across was per-sonal skill development – a lot of station work, a lot of puck handling, a lot of skating. We worked on cycling the puck.

“In general, it’s mostly about individ-ual skill development – we’re trying to offer a development program to develop talent.”

According to Muspratt, the constant message during the camp is that hockey is supposed to be fun. However, they do provide direction for elite athletes.

Hockey Alberta will now host the camp across the province in Grande Prairie, Leduc, Cochrane, Lac La Biche and Lethbridge.

According to Muspratt, Strathmore is an ideal place to host this type of camp.

“Their facility there is excellent to host an event like (this)” he said. “Having a dryland area, an ice surface and meet-ing rooms. It is an attraction because it is closer to the city – to try and get kids out from North Calgary and South Cal-gary.

“It is relatively affordably too.”

The Strathmore Road Dawgs captured the atom division championship at the 2011 Cassie Campbell Street Hockey Tournament held April 30 in Calgary. The Dawgs won all three round-robin games and went undefeated en route to the gold medal, where they won 4-3 in the cham-pionship game. The team consists of members who take part in league hockey, some play in the Gleichen Pond hockey program, and some don’t play any form of organized hockey! Team members include Connor Pirie, Landon Osachuk, Andrej Halkovic, Simon Hoff, Dallas Shep-pard, Ben Cull, Turner Dirk, Kelton Travis, Connor Dunlop and Lucas Muenchrath. The team was coached by Myles Pirie and Pat Osachuk. Congratulations to the Dawgs!

Lynne and Jim Kozma were essential in getting inline skating into Strathmore, along with their coaches Aerin Wheeler, Jason Walker and Mike Bodnar. They rounded up enough interest to get two teams of each U10, age 5 to 10, and U14, ages 11 to 14. This year the teams will be concentrating on their inline skills and with more interest they plan on having more teams next year. They play mostly house league and may play a few games with surround-ing area teams.

Football season is still a few months away, but kids are al-ready gearing up and hitting the gridiron. The spring football camps began on May 2 and will run until the end of the month. The camps are held at the Strathmore High School field every weekday, weather dependent, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“The numbers are quite good. The first day out was actually yesterday (May 2) I don’t know exactly how many guys. We’re just under 20 guys in the high school level,” said Carl Seafoot, President of the Strathmore Community Football Association, SCFA.

“Between the three groups there are probably 60 to 70 peo-ple registered.”

Seafoot is the head coach of the high school team and said some of the bantam team are moving up, and joining the se-

nior team, which is good for Seafoot and his coaches to work with them directly.

“It’s kind of a learning curve for everybody right at the start,” said Seafoot.

He said there is the possibility of a new team coming some-time in the future if the new interest continues to grow.

“We do have a fair amount of interest at the upper age of an atom group, so that’s something we’ll have to think about,” said Seafoot.

He said the SCFA just started the peewee team a few years ago, which is for kids aged 10 to 12, and he has noticed 9-year-olds have shown some interest, and some are out for the spring camps. Seafoot said the SCFA is not actively look-ing to add a new team to its roster, but the possibility is al-ways there.

In the third week of August the SCFA will be hosting their fall football camps, and the season begins in September.

New and returning players to the three Strathmore football teams can be seen practicing at Strath-more High School over the next month.

Alysa van Haastert moved to Rosebud four years ago to pursue her passion for acting.

Her mom has gone to Rosebud for years to see performances, and brought home a brochure about the Rosebud School of the Arts. Upon seeing it, van Haastert decided to look into it further and quickly fell in love.

From April 25 to 27, van Haastert’s final student project, ‘The turn of the screw’ was performed at the Akokiniskway Gal-lery.

“It was great, it went really well,” said van Haastert.

She scheduled it for dif-ferent showings through-out the three days, with one of those times being a nighttime showing. She said her designer had de-cided to use a window, which let outside light in.

“I think of the three shows…more people kind of just found it disturbing and kind of creepy,” said van Haastert.

“Whereas the evening show at 11:05 p.m. the energy was just super hyped and when it went black and people would scream and the energy was just way dif-ferent.”

van Haastert said the evening show was more of what she had expected, but feels the audience for the earlier shows were still engaged and followed the story line well.

The story follows a governess who grew up in a parsonage. Her father

would only let her read the Bible, and she would try to sneak in other books. After leaving her father’s home, to take care of two orphans, the Governess falls in love with their uncle who had hired her.

She begins to dream about the uncle coming and sweeping her off her feet, and one day she sees someone, and thinks it’s the uncle. Instead it turns out she is seeing ghosts.

“The question throughout the whole story is, is she seeing them for real or is she imagining them so she has this story to tell the uncle,” said van Haastert.

She had seen this per-formance in Victoria three years ago, and because of the way it intrigued her she thought it would be the perfect final project. One thing that drew her in the most was the fact she was sitting on the edge of her seat while watching a live perfor-mance.

“Something about get-ting scared is really in-triguing to me. Something about it is exciting and

makes me want more, it’s kind of like an adrenaline thing. I wanted to bring some-thing different to the Rosebud crowd,” said van Haastert.

She has been cast in the fall show at Rosebud Theatre, and is not sure what she will be doing after that. She may opt to take some classes on movement and work on her voice, or may go travel for a while.

“I love theatre, and I want to stay in it, but I don’t know if I’ll take a break from it, or dive in right a way.”

Following her dream

Alysa van Haastert is about to finish up her time as a Rosebud student of the arts. Her student final project ‘The turn of the Screw’ was onstage April 25 to 27.
