Town council entertained the idea of paving the

road to allow for speeds lower than 50 km an hourto exist in Strathmores residential areas in the fu-ture, with a unanimous vote to review the traffic by-law and develop a policy based on the CanadianGuidelines for establishing posted speed limits last

week.The decision followed a proposal by the traffic ad-

visory committee to reduce municipal speed limitsfrom 50 km an hour to 40 km an hour on residentialroads dependent on specific residential componentssuch as traffic volume, parked vehicles, and road

width.A speed limit is exactly that, its a limit not a tar-

get, but unfortunately there are some people on theroad that see it as a target, said Martin Wiseman,member of the Traffic Advisory Board. I think thisis an awesome opportunity for Strathmore to be

proactive before someone gets killed down CentreStreet for example. By reducing the speed limit itsgot to have a positive impact on road safety. Its gotto have a positive impact on insuring the safety ofpedestrians; children.

Understanding possible defiance by drivers whenlowering the speed limit by too high of a reductionand acknowledging the possibility of observing agreater success rate when communicating the rea-soning behind the change in speed limits, the boardproposed surveying residents living on those roadsconsidered and thus providing a sense of engage-ment.All five council members in attendance, with the

absence of Mayor Michael Ell and Councillor DenisePeterson, spoke in favour of the reduction to 40 kman hour on certain residential roads, specifically sin-gling out Centre Street.

Centre Street is one of the busiest if not the mostdangerous street in this town and I refuse to useit myself, said Councillor Rocky Blokland. To methats just an accident waiting to happen at somepoint. I really believe were not going down farenough with this, it should go down to 30. Ive driv-en through lots of town and there are speed limitsall over the place and you just have to pay attentionand watch the signs and follow the speed limits.

Councillor Steve Grajczyk was also recognizedthat saving lives takes priority but was concerned

with the cost of replacing and installing new speedsigns. Council also discussed the possibility of intro-ducing a blanket 40-km-an-hour zone for all residen-tial areas, but research proved the approach had notalways been successful in areas across the province.

The Town of Strathmore isbeing left in the dark aboutthe fate of thousands of dol-lars in sponsorship for ad-

vertising to the CanadianRockies International Rodeo(CRIC), after the cancellationof the 2016 music festivaland rodeo.

The organization releaseda statement over two weeksago announcing a decision tono longer forge ahead withCanadas largest gay rodeo

and the anticipated CanadaDay music festival, which

wouldve featured acclaimedartists such as Terri Clark,the Road Hammers, and KimMitchell.While the announcement

left the community and its lo-cal politicians baffled a de-cision they were told proveda direct result of the Fort Mc-Murray fires and low ticket

sales CRIR remained reti-cent thus far on $10,000 thetown awarded the organiza-tion in January to go towardsadvertising at the event.

Our goal is to hopefullyget the money back and useit for other community festi-

vals or other groups lookingfor sponsorship but at thispoint we have no informa-tion, said Tracy Simpson,community services coor-dinator with the Town ofStrathmore.

All weve been told is thatthe board is coming up with

a plan and once they have aplan they would be letting usknow. Unfortunately wevehad very little communica-tion.

The event wouldve fea-tured more than 12 well-known artists, a 13-event ro-deo, a barbeque, food trucks,and beer and wine vendors.

This year wouldve markedthe festivals 23rd anniversa-ry and seventh year in Strath-more.The Alberta Rockies Gay

Rodeo Association (ARGRA),who hosted the event last

year, and CRIR were unavail-able for comment. Councilrequested for the issue to be

brought back for the June 15regular council meeting.

CRIR silent on returning funds

The first Annual REC the Streets event kicked off on June 1. The first week had participants par-taking in free exercise classes such as Hatha Yoga, Zumba Gold, Senior Aquacise, Stretching and

toning and some disc golf. Many of these events were held downtown on 2nd Avenue.

THE TOWN OF STRATHMORE HAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED A

PUBLIC ARTS BOARD.

The Public Arts Board, an advisory committee to Council, is responsible to

advocate for public art, advise on public art policies, procedures, guidelines,

plans and issues as they relate to the Town of Strathmore, and provide

support to Administrative staff and programs.

The Public Arts Board will:

Develop a Public Art Master Plan

Advise on public art policies and guidelines Promote awareness and understanding of the importance of

public art Participate in the implementation of the Public Art Master Plan

and individual public art project plans Participate in the periodic review of the Public Art Master Plan

Advise the Town on adjudication process for commissioningand acquiring public art

Advise the Town on maintenance and management of thePublic Art Collection

Evaluate proposed public art donations Develop and implement a communications framework Provide advice on the decommissioning of public art

The Town of Strathmore is now seeking four (4) members of the public with

a background in the following to sit on this committee:

an emergency situation so quick action is a must.

With the possibility of changes in the marijuana

laws in Canada, it bears mentioning that use of

alcohol and marijuana together impairs driving

more than either substance alone.

The Strathmore Overnight Shelter

(SOS) is letting their creative juicesflow in organizing an entertaining andmouth-watering chili cook-off fund-raiser, with ambitions of raising thou-sands of dollars towards a requiredsprinkler system to bring their projectto fruition.

Organizers aim to receive participa-tion from 50 local residents and 25

businesses, who would contribute chilito be judged and voted on during theshelters first Rootin Tootin Outhousein the Park fundraiser. With a goal ofraising $5,000 at the event on CanadaDay, the shelter is inching closer tomeet the remaining $20,000 necessaryfor the installation of a sprinkler sys-tem; imperative to meet Strathmores

building codes for combining a church the harvest Healing Centre Church and an overnight shelter under thesame roof.

We have to have some fundraisersfor that sprinkler system and withthe shelter I think people dont knowexactly what it is still, said RichardRodgers, director of outreach for SOS.

People are sick of the same oldthing, sick of the run for this, the runfor that, silent auctions, and dinners.

chili voted on by the public in hopes of tak-ing home the trophy a cowboy sitting ona toilet. The fundraiser will also provide in-formation and clarity on the shelter project,its purpose, and the need for financial help.

Its really up to the town how well it turnsout, Rodgers said. Its a type of learningcurve. We have to try one fundraiser and ifit doesnt work out then we have to think ofsomething that works out better.The Rootin Tootin Outhouse in the Park

Tent Meeting, a musical play,will open in Rosebuds OperaHouse, June 24. The show hasreceived four nominations forBest Musical and Best Produc-tion. Morris Ertman, Rosebud

Theatres Artistic Director, whoco-wrote the musical and is alsodirecting this production, hasalso won and been nominatedfor numerous awards. The mostrecent are the 2016 Critter Awardnominations for Best Directorand Best Production for both

Wizard of Oz and Outside Mull-ingar at Rosebud Theatre.This is Tent Meetings third

time in Rosebud, having touredthrough the village in 2000 andhaving been produced at Rose-

bud Theatre in 2007.The show has entertained and

blessed people over and overand over again, Ertman said. Ikeep running into people whosay, Man, that show just grabbedme. It was so great. And they re-member it from 16 years ago or10 years ago.The story may be especial-

ly pertinent for the people ofsouthern Alberta this year, since

its set in hard economic times,during an extended drought.Its a story about what to do

when your life is falling apart ...whether its drought or whetherits a Fort McMurray wildfire and

youve been driven from yourhome. How do you not let bit-terness get in the way? Ertmansaid. Its about a husband and

wife who are estranged and to-days the day of reckoning ...and it happens to be around atent meeting. The story is a storyabout a community that gath-ers around George and Dollyand holds them up, even thoughtheir marriage is failing.

And Tent Meeting points to abrighter future.

The story is actually a verytrue-to-life story about how wegrow apart from each other andthen how we can get that feel-ing back when we surrender tolove, Ertman said. Its so filled

with hope and its also filled withthe notion that divine and won-derful healing can happen. Andthat we can come out the otherside of hard times more whole

than we were before.Jonathan Bruce is returning to

Tent Meeting to play Sam.Hes done the production vir-tually wherever Ive directed it,Ertman said. He embodies thecharacter so beautifully. Hes gota gorgeous tenor voice and hesmokes a stogie while singing.Hes like Jackie Gleason with astogie. Hes just stunning.

Rosebuds own David Snider isalso returning to the show, as isSeana Lee Wood, an actor fromStratford and Toronto. Actors De-clan OReilly and Blair Young ofCalgary complete the cast.

The Rockyford club took part in the Peavey MartCustomer Appreciation day on April 9 in Strath-more. We cooked and served food and we were

able to make enough profits from that barbequethat we donated $300 to the Wheatland Food Bankin Strathmore.

On April 30, we took our cheque to the foodbank and then we participated in a club tour of theAnimal Care Center just outside of Strathmore. Abig thanks goes to Jodi Koester and her staff whowere amazing tour guides. This Animal Care Cen-ter opened in March 2007 and is a mixed animal

veterinary practice. Everyone enjoyed this tour andhopes to return next year.

Our District Heifer show was held on May 6at the Calgary Stockyards in Strathmore and theRockyford members did well. Congratulations ourHeifer members. The following are their resultsfrom the show:

Strathmore High has always tried to do things dif-ferently, and our principal has never shied away fromtrying new things. For a few years, we tried Early BirdPE for kids who had trouble fitting in PE classes intotheir schedules.

Early Bird PE means classes start at 7:15 in the morn-

ing, and ended around 8:30 am. Then youd go off toyour regular classes, and you could finish your day byabout 2:15 p.m.

One would think that would be a pretty good gig,but I was the guy who foolishly volunteered for thatclass! Even though these high school kids signed upfor the class, how many do you think actually liked be-ing active by 7:20ish not so many!

I tried all sorts of things to make it fun, and Im noteven a morning person myself! My class started in Sep-tember, and by winter mornings, it was a tough sell.A couple of really dark mornings, I had the bril-

liant idea to have them play hide & seek in the emp-ty school. No one sane was at the school at 7:15 a.m.,so the place was empty! Wed pick an it person, Idgo on the PA System to send off the kids to hide, andthe search was on. Little did I know that one morning,two kids asked our head caretaker Tim, to let them intoa classroom to hide. You guessed it they hid in this

room, shut out the lights, and went to sleep! None ofus could find them they slept, and won the stupidgame!

Fast forward about 20 years and this same Tim isworking his butt off for the 2016 Grad. Hes loggedmany overtime hours readying the school and groundsfor the big celebration. In fact, one of the last morn -ings, he worked until about 2:30 a.m., and was to starthis AM shift. A quick stop at Tims would help himthrough the morning, he thought.

So, he stopped in the Drive Thru to place his coffeeorder. However, on the third try, no one was taking hisorder, so he began to yell! The vehicles behind him

were honking, and he was furious. It was then thatTim realized he was ordering through the garbage can!

After getting his order, he sheepishly pulled into theCanadian Tire lot, only to get more honks and the fin-ger from another driver! Its amazing how early morn-

ing rage can take over people!I have my own English student who gives me night-

mares. Kaleigh is one of the nicest people you couldever meet. Shes kind of like a Disney princess. Shescheerful and sweet all cotton candy clouds and uni-corns. That is, unless you happen to meet her before9 a.m.!

Its a little like Frozen meets The Shining Iveactually heard her say: REDRUM REDRUM! (In case

you dont know, or have forgotten, spell that back-ward!).

I actually worry about her parents someone hasto wake her up for school! Im so glad I only get herat school I mean, whats she going to do to me inpublic? There are witnesses! So Ive come to walksoftly around Kaleigh in the morning classes! Ive actu-ally told her that when she eventually gets engaged,I need to meet her fianc I mean,someone has to

warn this person!I do get it, though. no one ever wanted to wake my

young son Brennen, when he fell asleep in our van. Idont want you to phone Child Welfare, but there weretimes back then, we let him sleep a bit longer in the

van in the garage. Its not like he was going to freeze,the vehicle was still warm, and it was always easierto let him wake slowly! It was probably my fault. Asa new dad, I did the 2 a.m. feedings with him. It wasall so new, and I was an eager young dad! Id change

him, goof around with him, maybe watch a late nightshow. then, I could never get him back to sleep! Withmy daughter Breanne, it was totally different I hadlearned my lesson! She got the bottle in the dark, gotchanged in the dark, and I never said a word to her! I

was like a ninja in stealth mode. Its funny how timeschange. Just a few short years ago, my kids werenteven getting in until about the time I used to do theirfeedings! Maybe tonight, Ill take a walk down Memo-ry laneI know, Ill text them at 2 a.m.!

To the EditorIt costs $0 to be a decent person; how-

ever, despite the cost it appears to be acourtesy that is currently lacking in politi-cal arenas both provincially and federally.

Recent incidents in Ottawa with PrimeMinister Trudeau and in Edmonton withDerek Fildebrandt provide examples of

inappropriate behaviour, especially fromindividuals in leadership roles. Followingtheir respective incidents, both men wereCanadian politicians being profoundly Ca-nadian apologizing with a repetitive sorry.This is definitely nothing new. My ear-

liest recollection of politicians behavingpoorly is of Nikata Krushchevs purportedshoe banging in the United Nations Gen-eral Assembly in 1960. True or not, it hasclaimed a place in history and in his mem-oires. My next memory is of attending aparliamentary session in Ottawa with agroup of Strathmore students on the East-ern Canada trip in the 1990s. These teen-agers were surprised at how the parlia-mentarians were behaving telling me Mrs.(Denise) Peterson would never allow us toact like that in class.

Im sure she isnt the only teacher orparent with expectations and guidelineson proper behaviour.Versions of the Golden Rule are found in

Leah Elder and Carly Da-vidson are ready to bringthe joys of reading to localchildren at the StrathmoreMunicipal Library for the an-nual Summer Reading Pro-gram. The theme this yearis wild and the two coor-dinators have been hard atwork planning on how toincorporate the theme intoeach weeks activities while

inspiring the youths to read.Come September theywill be the kids the teach-er doesnt have to worryabout, said Elder.

They will be the leadersin their class, they will bestrong readers, they will behelping their friends and itgives them an opportunityto meet new people.

Once children are regis-tered in similar age groups,they will embark on fourweeks of games, crafts andreading, all of which encom-pass the wild theme such aswild weather, the wild west

and wild Canada. Each agegroup will have the eventtailored to them and theirlevel of ability. The programis offered to children agedthree years old to Grade 7.

For Davidson the aim ofthe program is to help thechildren who like to readbooks grow, and instill alove of reading in others.

I dont believe that any-one doesnt like to read they

just havent found the rightbook yet, she said.

But that is our job andwe are going to find theright book.At the end of the program

the top readers and thosethat have improved the mostwill receive prizes, althoughthe coordinators are hopingfor some donations in orderto get bigger, more person-alized prizes.

Both Elder and David-son grew up with libraries

as an integral part of theirlives. Davidson, who is fromStrathmore, was part of thereading program when shewas younger and spent mostof her school years lost in abook. This is what has in-spired her to get her LibraryInformation Tech diplomaafter she finishes studyingEnglish and Psychology.While being a passionatereader she has also workedwith children over the years.

Elder grew up in St. Albertwhere she too participatedin reading programs. Asher mom is a librarian she

knows the ins and outs oflibrary etiquette. She is anengineering student at theSouthern Alberta Institute ofTechnology (SAIT) but shehas spent a lot of time help-ing children as part of thegirl guides.

Registration begins June11 on the Strathmore Munic-ipal Library website. Chil-dren must have their ownlibrary card to register.

Wetlands are a vital par t of the eco-system and help with a number of pro-cesses such as flood and drought pre-

vention.Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC) un-

derstands the need for wetlands. Thegroup recently held their 34th AnnualStrathmore Dinner and Auction on June4 at the Strathmore Civic Centre to con-tinue to fund their restoration efforts.

So we are a conservation company,said Warren Robb, conservation pro-gram specialist who is in charge ofparts of Wheatland County and VulcanCounty. We try to conserve the land soit can stay as the native prairies. We tryto keep the land as it has always beenfor wildlife and especially waterfowl.Wetlands are important parts of the

ecosystem. While acting as habitats forwaterfowl, they also act as buffers forfloods and droughts, and provide a

water source for cattle. They help withground flow, contribute to the ground

water table and help filter contami-nants, such as an excess of phosphorus,out of the water before it travels into thelakes and streams to form algae blooms.

In Canada up to 70 per cent of wet-lands have been destroyed or degraded,some due to having been drained foragricultural use of the land. DUC worksalongside farmers to form a symbioticrelationship allowing for continuing ag-ricultural practices while protecting andrevitalizing wetland areas. An exampleof this relationship is Shell Buffalo HillsConservation Ranch.

DUC bought the 6,000 acres of land in

2013; it is the organizations largest landpurchase to date. It is also ecologicallyimportant because of the native prairiehabitat. The Shell Buffalo Hills conser-

vation ranch is made up of two historicalranches: the UM Ranch formed in 1904,and the Buffalo Hills Ranch formed in

1911. In 1950 the ranches were mergedand became King Ranch, which wouldcontinue until 2003 when it was againmerged with the Willard Ranch and

became known as Marsh Ranch. Theowner of the land at the time, GordonMarsh, decided to sell the land to DUCin order to conserve it.

Since then the organization hashelped restore the wetlands that weredrained while allowing the wetlandsleft on the land to thrive. The land isleased out so that cattle can still grazein the area. Farmers who do decide tohave their wetlands restored are com-pensated by the group.

go into education including numerousprevious teachers and a desire to carryforward the inspiration to the next gen-eration.

I always wanted to make a positiveimpact on young peoples lives, said the27-year-old Silva. I am very passionatefor science and math. I always really en-joyed those subjects and always reallywanted to inspire others students to besuccessful in those areas.

He plans on returning to Strathmoreand bringing his teaching skills to thenew Wheatland Crossing School whenit opens in the fall, where he will teachhigh school math and science.

Justins work was exemplary, saidSharon Pelech, an assistant professorwho taught Silva in his science meth-ods course. His creativity and detail inplanning for providing students withopportunities to experience science asa process as opposed to a lot of timesscience is typically presented as fact, soJustin is able to connect some higherscience concepts to students everydaylives.

Silva was surprised when the deancontacted him to congratulate him onthe award, stating it was a combina-tion of outstanding performance in thepracticums and academic excellence inthe classroom. Silva did three practi-cums during his years at the university.His first practicum was in De Winton,

his second in Medicine Hat and the lastone in Taber.After receiving the medal, Silva said

it was one of those moments that willstay with him forever and will help mo-tivate him to be a good teacher.

It is nice to have that medal now andhave the degrees framed, said Silva. Iguess it symbolizes the time to moveon to the next stage in life now it is alittle bittersweet in ways but it is great.

All of us at the back of our eyes havesnitches who tell on us. And thankgoodness those blood vessels and capil-laries do, for they give evidence of notonly eye problems but developing trou-

ble in the body such as glaucoma, mul-tiple sclerosis, high blood pressure anddiabetes long before symptoms appear.

Dr. Michelle Duke at FYI Doctors is astrong proponent of comprehensive eyeexams for not only checking vision anddetermining eye health but a forewarn-ing of developing problems elsewherein the body.

A comprehensive eye exam is onewhere we check your vision, we checkto see if you have a prescription, bin-ocular vision, how well your eyes worktogether, and a lot of health compo-nents. So much can be detected in aneye exam. As an example, she citesglaucoma as an example of how an eyeproblem can escape notice that leads us

to believe our eyes are healthy.

Glaucoma at first affects pe-ripheral vision so must peopledont notice the effect, she ex-plained. If left untreated the dis-ease damages the optic nerve

with the potential to cause blind-ness. There isnt a remedy, onlytemporary measures such as eyedrops that relieve the pressureand surgery in some situations.

A lot of people think that eyediseases such as glaucoma hap-pen when youre older, Dukeexplained. That isnt true. Ivehad young patients who despitethere not being a family historydevelop the disease.Another eye disease, macu-

lar degeneration, is age related(AMD) but can be influenced byother factors such as smokingand being exposed to sunlightfor long periods during a per-sons life. The degeneration is oftwo types: wet and dry. In theformer small blood vessels grow

underneath the macula destroy-ing light sensitive cells in addi-tion to leaking blood fluid intothe eye. In dry AMD, as in wet,

light sensitive cells break down.Waste products build up in theretina, forming small depos-its that tend to increase in size.Eventually, central vision beginsto deteriorate.Although AMD is age related

it can be caused by bad habitssuch as smoking and not takingpreventative measures such as

wearing sun glasses that blockultra-violet radiation from thesun, Judy pointed out. Nutri-tional supplements can assist eyehealth although a proper bal-anced diet can achieve the sameresult. Eat foods such as kaleand other dark green leafy veg-etables. Pay particular attentionto orange coloured vegetableslike peppers and carrots. Omega3 found in fish oils is also ben-eficial.

Duke recommends patientshaving an eye exam ask the op-tometrist if it is comprehensive or

something simpler. Eyes shouldbe examined every two years forthose between the ages of 19 to64, annually for patients over 64.WELL MAINTAINED

Members of the community are throwing theirsupport behind Strathmores 15-year-old ZackProudfoot, who secured himself a spot in theCandance 2016 30th anniversary national finals

where he will compete against hundreds of otherdancers from across North America and amongother routines perform his award-winning musi-cal theatre solo.

Proudfoot began dancing late in the game, atage seven, after squirming in his seat watching

his younger sister have fun on stage. Following inhis older brothers footsteps who also danced the up-and-comer trains 16 hours a week, per-fecting contemporary, tap, ballet, hiphop, jazz,and musical theatre techniques among his manyother dance classes. Then just over two weeksago, Proudfoot found himself the runner-up at anelite Candance competition in Red Deer on May22, when he received a high score of over 95 outof 100, and awarding him a spot at the nationalcompetition in Orlando, Fla. in early July anhonour no one in his family has received and

which comes attached with a $5,000 price-tag thefamily and community is now fundraising for.

My first reaction was shock, then the first thingI said when I got back to my group of friends

was, my mom is probably crying in the audienceright now; I wasnt wrong, said Proudfoot.

Im going to see incredibly amazing dancersthat will give me inspiration to shoot for that lev-el of skill. Im 100 per cent going to work as hardas I can to make sure that Im ready to go to thatcompetition.

Several thousand dancers across North Amer-ica were selected to compete in the nationals,

where dancers are exposed to workshops androutines mirroring the style of So You Think YouCan Dance.While the family expects Proudfoot to compete

against roughly 200 athletes in his age group he is competing in Mr. Teen the StrathmoreHigh School student will be able to perform ahip hop routine, and his musical theatre routine,for which he received numerous recognitions, in-cluding most entertaining, high score, outstand-

ing musical theatre solo, and subsequently thespot at nationals.

He was a slow starter, he was a late bloomer,but he just hit a peak and I dont even think hesclose to his ceiling, said Christine Forner, Proud-foots mother.

Its the top of the top, the best of the bestthat are going and its very hard to get into. Hesdone really well in musical theatre in the lastthree years, which gave him so much more con-fidence.As the family is now actively fundraising and

seeking sponsorships to cover travel, accommo-dation, and competition fees cost, Expressions

The Dance Company, has offered extra instruc-tion and studio time, while Catch a Rising StarDance Festival has also sponsored the youngathlete. Members of the local dance studio havealso started to financially support Proudfoot andsome mothers are helping Forner plan a fund-raising paint night event. So far the family hasraised just over $600.
