The Community Futures Wild Rose Farm Selec-

tion Committee publicized the nine producers, pro-cessors, and ag-tourism operators including fouroperations in Wheatland County to participate inthe Open Farm Days Coaching Program in the WildRose region - a $50,000 investment by Alberta Cul-ture and Tourism.

Poplar Bluff Organics, Country Lane Farms, WillFarms, and Rocking R Guest Ranch were amongnine successful applicants in the region that spansfrom Chestermere to Hussar and from Trochu toGleichen.

For the next several months, the recipients willcollect on one-on-one coaching from an Alber-ta management consulting practice, ClearthinkGroup, with a focus of preparing farm operatorsto develop their product and develop agriculturaltours before the two-day Open Farm Days event in

August.This coaching program will help them with theirday on Open Farm Days but also many of thesegroups do other events or tours, so whatever theylearn they can now implement into their other ag-ri-tourism offerings, said Wendy Gerbrandt, com-munity economic development (CED) coordinatorfor Community Futures Wildrose, who added thatparticipation in the southern region now surpassedthose of central and northern Alberta.

We went from having the smallest amount ofregistrants to now having the most. Because of

what we did to push the program, we have morefarms overall throughout all of Alberta which ispretty neat.Three qualified coaches, with extensive experi-

ence working with agri-business, agriculture, andtourism, met with all nine successful applicants last

week and toured the operations to provide feed-back and advice on improving aspects of the busi-ness before Albertans tour the property.The coaching program will address increasing

the quality of quantity of ag-tourism operators,increasing on-farm sales during Open Farm Days

weekend, provide experiential tourism opportuni-ties, and promote local foods and create awarenessof where food originated.While Rocking R Guest Ranch hosted a culinary

event last year, and Poplar Bluff Organics, as wellas Country Lane Farms, participated in Open FarmDays previously, new-kid-on-the-block to the event,

Will Farms, applied for the opportunity to receivecoaching in order to be prepared on how to servethe public most effectively in two months time.

Three eager and spirited young wom-en are attending fundraisers and meet-ing various communities in preparation

for competing in five different catego-ries during the Strathmore Stampede,in hopes of grasping the title of MissStrathmore Stampede.After a 15-year hiatus with a queen

being appointed in 2012 until 2015 -Strathmore created the Stampede Roy-alty Program Committee and held acontest for the position last year. Con-tinuing on with the tradition, Strath-more local Shelby Stout, Cayley Peltzer,and Lindsay Newman hope to representStrathmore in the upcoming year.

We attend fundraisers and events toput ourselves out there and talk to thecommunity, said Stout, who took partin 4H for nearly a decade.

Strathmore is my home town. Ive

grown up here my whole life, Ive goneto school here, I know tons of peoplehere through 4H, and I think itd be re-ally special if they had someone thatthey knew. The other girls would begreat too; they are so nice. We all havefairly similar personalities its been alot of fun and Im really excited to getto know them a lot better.All three contestants travelled to Dids-

bury on June 12 to attend a fundraiser,and will be expected to participate infive categories adjudicated by three

judges over several days during Strath-more Stampede weekend. The contes-tants will have a chance to impress the

judges with their horsemanship, im-

promptu speeches, personal interviews,written exams, and the fashion show.While all three participants are con-fident in their horsemanship, they are

brushing up on their knowledge of ro-

deo history and information on Strath-more and the area. Having ran for thetitle of queen herself at a young age as

well as organizing a queen contest forfive years in Camrose previously, chairof the Stampede Royalty Program Com-

mittee Judi Wilson, is excited about thecontest this year and continuing the tra-dition.

There is nothing like a beautiful girlon a horse that draws peoples attentionand when she goes to all these differ-ent venues, whether its the Ducks fun-draiser or whether it was our CowgirlCattle Company, where shes represent-ing Strathmore, said Wilson.

It brings Strathmore itself into thelimelight, but even more so it brings ro-deo, our Strathmore Stampede, into thelight.The committee received eight appli-

cations in total of hopeful contestantsvying for the opportunity to take thecrown, which will be relinquished by

the current queen during the rodeo per-formance. In contrast to last year, thecommittee decided to remove the publicspeaking component and introduce animpromptu speech aspect where ques-tions will be drawn out of a hat at thefashion show. Newman who held the

Amateur Rodeo of Central Alberta titlefor Rimbey Rodeo Princess in 2015, saidshe looks forward to possibly repre-senting a pro pageant featuring chuck-

wagons, visiting with different commu-nity members, and educating the publicon rodeos. With just over a month togo until the event, Peltzer. who is com-pleting her agriculture business diplo-ma and pursuing an animal health tageducation, is preparing herself for theopportunity to represent the rodeo sheattended each year since a young age.

PUBLIC ARTS BOARD.

The Public Arts Board, an advisory committee to Council, is responsible to

advocate for public art, advise on public art policies, procedures, guidelines,

plans and issues as they relate to the Town of Strathmore, and provide

support to Administrative staff and programs.

The Public Arts Board will:

Develop a Public Art Master Plan Advise on public art policies and guidelines Promote awareness and understanding of the importance of

public art Participate in the implementation of the Public Art Master Plan

and individual public art project plans

Participate in the periodic review of the Public Art Master Plan

Advise the Town on adjudication process for commissioningand acquiring public art

Advise the Town on maintenance and management of thePublic Art Collection

Following last years success of the an-nual Canadian Tire Jumpstart Campaign,which raised approximately $14,000,the franchise was among the top three

locations in western Canada and in turnreceived a community BBQ valued at$20,000 winnings the company decidedto cut back on and instead disperse thou-sands of dollars into Strathmore schools.Aware of budget cutbacks and keep-

ing in line with the campaigns objectiveof helping children stay active and funddisadvantaged children to fulfil theirsporting aspirations, the company doledout $10,000 to be divided among eightschools within the area.

We decided to scale back on the bar-beque a little bit and take the excessfunds and spend it in the communityrather than spending the entire amounton the barbeque, said Shelley Orford,

co-owner of Canadian Tire in Strath-more.Jumpstart, their focus is kids, and

we believe in that. So we wanted to do

something that supported the youth andwe know that schools are facing cut-backs on their funding, so we thoughtthe best way to reach the youth in Strath-more is to give the schools the funds tocome and buy whatever they want fortheir school.

Canadian Tire dispersed the vouchersto the schools last week, allowing for thepurchase of gym and recreational pro-gram equipment.

During the first year of participatingin the campaign in 2011, the local storehelped 21 kids in the local area, a num-ber which has doubled each year since.By donating the money to schools, theinstitutions will be able to upgrade theirschools with new equipment and benefittheir students moving forward.According to Orford the feedback from

schools has been positive and apprecia-tive.

Their gratitude has been overwhelm-ing, she said. Theyve been so grateful

for this that it made us feel like we madethe right choice.Canadian Tire will be hosting this

years dunk-tank fundraiser on June 25.

I thought perhaps they might havesome helpful suggestions because I re-ally didnt quite know how the programruns and what kinds of things we shouldbe doing for the public when they come,said Elaine Bellamy, owner of the corpo-rate family farm, Will Farms Ltd.

I hope to help the public learn a littlebit more about how a large grain farmactually operates in Alberta and how im-portant the farming economy is. I hopeto represent farms in Alberta that growcanola and grains. Its a lot of work totake part in the Open Farm Days, butwe as farmers are constantly encouragedto tell our story. Tell the public all thethings you do for the environment andto be sustainable. I guess thats why Ithought Ill be involved.A total of 16 organizations are regis-

tered to take part in Open Farm Daysin the southern Alberta region, includingthree culinary events. Furthermore, over75 host farms and seven culinary eventsare involved across the province.

Strathmore hosted the event for thefirst time last August, with the aim toeducate its residents on the operationsof their establishments and showcaselocal food components. Because of itssuccess, having attracted over 300 resi-dents to each farm that year five farmsand one farm-to-table culinary event the government awarded the region thefunds to provide the coaching programto nine farms in the region.

Coaches have met with all the selectedfarms, toured the properties, completeda comprehensive initial visit, and provid-ed a report with recommendations. Al-though they will return during the event,the coaches will continue to provide ad-vice via phone and video conferencingin the meantime.

Open Farm Days, a collaborativeprovince-wide two-day event, givingresidents the opportunity to experiencefarms and become educated on wheretheir food comes from, will take place onAug. 20-21. A full list of par ticipants inall three regions can be viewed at www.albertafarmdays.com.

Wheatland County council discussed the meritsof retaining a mediation service for a few educa-tional sessions that would be provided to council.

Municipal leaders regularly face complex andcontroversial issues. There are times when speak-ing to an impartial party can bring an alternativeperspective for approaching the situation, said

Kim Heyman, Alberta Association of MunicipalDistricts and Counties (AAMDC) director of advo-cacy and communications.

For better communication Heyman recommendsthe Peer Network program to municipal leaders.

The Peer Network program is a resource ofeight mentors that have volunteered to serve asadvisors to their peers throughout Alberta, saidHeyman. Each peer mentor brings years of mu-nicipal experience in either an administrative orelected role and has been trained in dispute reso-lution techniques.Wheatland County councillors voted to have

the Peer Network retained to review roles and re-sponsibilities for municipal officials with them anddeemed the process would be beneficial to bothnew and re-elected officials alike. Conflict resolu-tion, within and without the council arena, was

also a topic of interest, with a hope that it couldimprove interpersonal communications for Wheat-land council members.

We all could use a refresher, said Reeve GlennKoester.

DALUM FIRE LOAN APPROVED

Dalum Fire Protection Agency Association will besmiling after the June 7 Wheatland County councilmeeting, as approval on Bylaw 2016-14 will allowthem to borrow $108,359.72 from the county, topay on outstanding debts accrued on the buildingof the new fire hall. Monthly payments with inter-est will be made over a period of fifteen years.

They do wonderful work out there and theyhave built a wonderful facility. This loan will allowthem to continue to do their work, said Jim Laslo,

general manager of Wheatland County Agriculture,Community & Protective ServicesThe new hall has provided much-needed equip-

ment storage, maintenance and training space.

MARIGOLD RATES APPROVED

Michelle Toombs, CEO for Marigold Library sys-tem approached Wheatland Council on June 7 fora raise in library per capita levy rates in 2017/18.She proposed $9.81 for 2017, $10.26 for 2018,

based on 2015 population of 8,285. Currently ratesrun $8.99. She said the increase is about two percent.The library has seen an increase of 2,100 card-

holders in the last year for the Wheatland area.Statistics show that our Alberta libraries are

very active, whereas other provinces have showndeclines, said Toombs.

She said library operation costs continue to rise.Digital services, deliveries to additional locationsand vehicle costs are some areas that are costingmore to run. With all the services and programsoffered to residents in the county, Toombs said

valuations and feedback supports users are gettinggood value for municipal investment in the librarysystem.

Councillor Berniece Bland complimentedToombs on the professionalism of the staff andtheir job efficiency. Toombs indicated they were

very thankful to be in a partnership with Wheat-land County.

SPEED ZONE NO GO

Wheatland council speculated on whetherspeed zone reductions were needed on the RangeRoad 222 and Hwy 561 intersection adjacent tothe Wheatland Crossing School.

I have had people phoning about the speedzoning on Hwy 561, said Councillor Alice Booth.

Setting secondary highway speed limits falls tothe province, but municipalities can make a re-

quest to have alterations considered.Trevor Richelhoff, from Alberta Transportation,said there is a rating system used to decide on aschool zone and its speed designation. A criterionwith a scoring system out of 100 points is used.Scores over 80 are named school zones, with cor-responding speed reductions. The WheatlandCrossing School intersection had a score of 57, soit is not required to have a 30 km speed designa-tion. The school is required to have the groundsfenced from highway access.

Council further discussed whether stop signsmight be a prudent or safe measure. CouncillorBrenda Knight and Councillor Ben Armstrongpointed out that having a school next to a sec-ondary highway is not a new situation, as thereare other examples of schools on secondary high-ways. They expressed that it is up to drivers to be

vigilant around a school and slow down duringschool hours. Knight said stop signs would just in-crease danger at the intersection, by stacking traf-fic onto a busy road. No measures were proposedat this time.

RECREATION FIELD UPDATE

Councillor Brenda Knight filled WheatlandCounty council in on the plans for the recreationalfacility that will be situated next to the new K-9school that will be built off George Freeman Trail,in the new community of Edgeview in Strathmore.

She said that she was able to tour similar fa-cilities in Calgary, Olds and Airdrie, and the pro-posed plans for the Edgeview site are lookingquite good. Sketches are posted on the WheatlandCounty website under the June 7 minutes and

agenda. There are soccer pitches, a walking trackand options for views of the community fieldhouse. There are no architectural drawings of thebuilding exterior as yet, but the Town of Strath-more has indicated it must be pleasing and fit inwith the surrounding buildings. There were someconcerns about the field house as its height is con-siderably taller than other structures in the area.There are two proposals for the type of building, aSprung beam structure or conventional construc-tion. The choice will be determined depending oncosts involved.

DUST CONTROL REVIEW

A review on how roads are considered for dustcontrol was called for by Councillor Brenda Knighton June 7. She had many concerned ratepayerscalling about the boundary roads close to the

Lakes of Muirfield community and Lyalta hamlet.I have asked year after year on this issue. I have

some very angry owners concerned about this,said Knight.

Currently there are guidelines for staff on wheredust control is done and none include countyhamlets or villages. Knight said the adjacent roadsbeing covered only have a few residents, whereasthere are over 100 residents and a commercial golfenterprise affected by the dust kicked up on theboundary roads. Council agreed that the criteriacould be reviewed and the issue revisited at a laterdate.

Learning to agree or disagree

The Cowgirl Cattle Company Strathmore Committee donated $6,585 to the Wheatland and Area Hos-

pice Society on June 13. Christina Lausen (l-r), Connie Lausen, Keith Clayton, Tammy Johansen, Glen-da Johansen, Judi Wilson, Yvonne Hartell, Marni Johansen, Judy McLean, and Gwen Schneider werepresent for the cheque presentation. The committee also donated $6,585 to STARS Air Ambulance and$924 to Fort McMurray.

When I decided to run to become your MLA forStrathmore-Brooks in January of 2015, the Wil-drose Party had been shattered by a mass floor-crossing that caused most Albertans to write theparty off for dead.

I ran for the Wildrose and to become your MLAbecause I have deeply held convictions that couldnot be bought off by the political opportunism ofthe Jim Prentice-Danielle Smith backroom deal. I

believe in the greatness of Alberta, the rightnessof conservatism, and the mission of the WildroseParty. For me, I would not compromise them for

anything.Anyone who met me during the campaign

knew exactly what they were voting for; Im aconservative, Im often politically incorrect, I maynot always be diplomatic, but I always say what Imean, and mean what I say. Im not good at play-ing political games, and so I dont bother trying.I just do what I was elected to do: fight for thepeople of Strathmore-Brooks and stand up for

Alberta.It would not be in keeping with who I am to

not address my three-day suspension from theWildrose Caucus. It is a complicated matter thathas not been done proper justice by most of themainstream media that operate in five-secondsound bites. Ill be the first to admit that the vol-ume of correspondence received from Albertans

via social media overwhelmed me and led to aninadvertent error. To address this, Ive hired extrahelp (at no additional cost to the taxpayer) toprevent these kinds of distractions in the future.

I want to sincerely thank the Strathmore-BrooksWildrose Constituency Association, constituents,and Wildrose members for all their support.These events were a distraction from our real

job, but I was pleased to be fully reinstated tothe Wildrose Caucus three days later. Its time tomove forward as a united party.

On June 2, I was back in the Legislature doingwhat I was elected to do; fighting Premier Ra-chel Notleys $6 billion Carbon Tax. This Carbon

Tax will kick Albertas largest job and wealth cre-ator when its down and cost families well over$1,000 a year. The NDP will rebate only a portionof the Carbon Tax back to Albertans in hopes of

buying them off at election time, but it will stillhit families and our economy hard.The Wildrose Official Opposition fought the

NDP Carbon Tax with everything that we hadin the Legislature. We put forward over a dozenamendments to the bill in hopes of making itless harmful than it would otherwise be. TheNDP rejected all of these amendments. We debat-

ed the bill until 4 a.m. in the morning trying toknock some sense into the NDP MLAs who weretrying not to fall asleep in their chairs.

But in the end, the NDP has a majority gov-ernment and forced their MLAs to follow theirpartys whip, regardless of the arguments made

by the Wildrose Opposition. Its an unfortunateproblem in our democracy.Weve had enough politicians who will do or

say anything just to get elected in Alberta, and itsled us straight to the NDP.Any constituent who knows me, knows that I

speak plainly. Im not the type to sugar-coat whatI have to say on the issues that matter most to

Albertans. Im not willing to promise anythingjust to get elected. Unlike many politicians, Imwilling to lose a vote or two if it means that I getelected on a clear mandate to represent the viewsof my constituents and my own convictions.

I will learn as I grow in the position that youhave honoured me with as your MLA, but I al-

ways stand by the principles that you elected meto stand up for.

Big 36 Horse Hitch Committee

Excitement is building as Gleichen awaits the arrival ofthe Big 36 Horse Hitch!

On July 1, Neil Dimmock and Bill Engman, with theirteam of magnificent Black Percheron horses will be in Glei-chen to answer any questions about their upcoming historic

journey and tribute to Slim Moorehouse.

The two men have always been interested in history.Grain wagons were a staple on western farms and ranchesin the 1920s. Trucks were unreliable and unable to haul as

big loads as the wagons. Slim Moorehouse, who worked onthe Bar O.N. Ranch in the Buffalo Hills near Arrowwood,

was a teamster driving long strings of horses or mules withloaded wagons to grain markets.

The Gleichen Call History Book, with a continuation inMemories Recalled Cluny and Gleichen History Book 2014,have articles about Slim Moorehouse, his outriders and the

Worlds Longest Team. The world record outfit was madeup of 36 Black Percheron horses hauling 10 wagons loaded

with a total of 1,477 bushels of grain. This would be equiva-lent to almost a Super B truck load of grain today.

In 1925, Slim Moorehouse drove his team of 36 Black Per-cheron horses with 10 wagons from Gleichen to the CalgaryStampede Parade to celebrate the 50th year of Calgarys

birth. Nine wagons were filled with 1377 bushels of top

grade wheat. The tenth wagon was loaded with 100 bush-els of four ounce sacks of wheat labeled, Marquis wheatgrown at Gleichen, Alta, and hauled by the longest teamin the world. Small sacks were thrown into the crowd assouvenirs.After five years of planning, Neil Dimmock and Bill Eng-

man from Mundare, Alta. will re-enact this journey 91 yearslater.

Gleichen plans to celebrate this historic event on July 1.Canada Day Festivities will kick off at 7 a.m. with a pancake

breakfast at the Gleichen Community Center until 11:30

Marigold Library systemis running out of space andstaff has needed to get cre-ative to find work relatedsolutions within a building

badly in need of repair. They

have reorganized work space,revamped shipping/receiv-ing areas, replaced the roofand fixed infrastructure in at-tempts to do business as usu-al. Future delivery volumesand any new IT equipmentand infrastructure might haveto be limited if change is notforthcoming. The basementand roof structure also stillneed work.To that end, the board is

looking for avenues that willraise money for a new build-ing.

It is very difficult for usto secure money for various

projects, Michelle Toombs,Marigold Library SystemsCEO.

Under the provincial Li-brary Act, library systems arenot allowed to borrow money.

There has been a request putforward by the Alberta UrbanMunicipality Association tohave the provincial govern-ment include an option forlibrary systems to finance

big projects like new librarybuildings.

To get a better picture ofbuilding costs, the MarigoldLibrary System is developinga feasibility study. It is expect-ed to be completed sometime

in November 2016. There willbe comparisons for mainte-nance and expansion of theexisting building, adding ad-ditional off-site facilities, or

building a new building at anew site.Toombs expects a new

building would cost about

four to six million dollars;however, the study will give amore accurate picture of thefunding needed and availableoptions. The library systemhas started saving towards anew building, but significantfundraising would be neededto make the new building areality.

She said that they are hop-ing for a facility of about20,000 square feet, with baysfor the library delivery vanfleet and adequate space fortechnical equipment, whichcurrently is severely cramped.

The current building was built

in the 1950s and has many in-frastructure and maintenanceissues. There has been someencouragement by the prov-ince to have library systemsform partnerships with otherorganizations and munici-palities, and Toombs said the

board doesnt object to hear-ing about partnership ideas.

Marigold Library Systemserves 290,263 residents inSouthern Alberta and has37 member public libraries,along with 12 book depos-its. Six vans are used to visitand deliver materials to eachof the member libraries and

book deposits once a week.

SHS presents final 2015-2016 playSABRINA KOOISTRA

From June 5-8, Strathmore HighSchools (SHS) Drama 25 and 35 classesfeatured a simple, yet captivating play

written by Thornton Wilder.Our Town, a Pulitzer Prize winner,

features three appropriately titled acts:Life, Marriage, and Death. Taking placein 1901 in the small community of Gro-

vers Corners, USA, the play focuses ontwo families and their paths throughlife, a seemingly simple idea, but wasportrayed through very relatable events.The production itself was written as a

play which featured a charismatic nar-rator who took the audience on a tripthrough daily rhythms like door-to-doormilk delivery, and milestones like thecircus that wedding preparations feellike.

Unique to this particular productionby SHS, staff member Paula Furfaroguest directed. Bringing talent and pas-sion to the set, producer and teacherPaula Richardson watched as she moti-

vated students to think differently whenmerging into the intricate world of each

of their characters.This task was made more difficult,

though, by the unique and rare tech-nique of limited special effects andsimple sets, props, and costumes whichhas challenged the students basic the-atrical skills and pushed them to matureas actors and actresses. The majority ofsound effects were created by the stu-

As a result of this the actors and actresseswere successful in bringing these very relatable characters tothe stage; the events of their daily lives were chronicled witha sense of realism which was a refreshing change from theshock-factor theatrics often seen.The production ended with the moral of living a thoughtful

life, a life lived in every moment, not just in the anticipationof the coming days.

I think its made [the students] look at the values of family,look at the values of heritage so often you go through lifenot paying attention to the moment. Youre always lookingfor whats going to happen tomorrow, whats going to hap-pen next year this play brings it right down and thatskind of the point of the playwright is that we never take thetime to look at the moment that were in, said Richardson.

Not only was this the final play of the year, it marked both

the first major play for some students and a farewell to highschool drama for others, a fitting end as many of these stu-dents will soon embark into the next act of their lives.

June 5-7.

With June 6-12 dedicated to SeniorsWeek, Wheatland County councillorsturned their attention to seniors hous-ing at the June 7 council meeting.

Reeve Glenn Koester said he hasbeen in discussions with the Alberta

government about funding for seniorsaccommodations in the Wheatlandarea. He said he has been asked tomeet with representatives of the se-niors and housing ministries aboutthis areas housing needs.

The government seems sincereabout getting planning done, saidKoester.

He said developing a concept plan,complete with a needs assessment, forhousing in the region would go a longway with government officials. Koestersaid he felt the tone was very good forfuture building prospects in Wheat-land County.With Sagewood Age Care and Wheat-

land Lodge full, along with long wait-ing lists for both, the housing shortageis a concern for the community. It was

suggested the various municipalities inWheatland County meet and develop aplan. He said the government wouldlike to see multiuse plans, providingall levels of care, and it encouragesmunicipalities to work together. Whenasked if initiatives for smaller com-plexes might be considered for smallrural towns and villages, Koester said

the government seemed to lean to-ward facilities in larger urban centres.

The Alberta government is gather-ing public input into what Albertanswould like to see for housing initia-tives and a survey can be completed.It is located online at (http://www.seniors-housing.alberta.ca/housing/affordable_housing_strategy_engage-ment.htm).The government is also close to

passing an initiative that will give fi-nancial support in keeping senior resi-dents in their own homes longer. Bill 5has passed third reading and went forRoyal assent on May 27, 2016.

If passed, the seniors Home Adapta-

tion and Repair program will be effec-tive July 1, 2016.The program will help seniors re-

main secure and independent in theirown homes. In addition to the loanprogram, we are restoring two milliondollars in grants for seniors who aremost in need, said Seniors MinisterLori Sigurdson. Seniors have told usthat being able to stay in their homesand communities, as long as theychoose or as long as they are able, is

vital to their independence and qualityof life.

Repairs and upgrades to seniorshomes for reasons of health, safety, ac-cessibility and energy efficiency willbe considered. Low interest loans upto $40,000 will be granted, based ona home equity of at least 25 per cent,and will be available to senior homeowners with incomes under $75,000.The loan repayment is due when thehouse is sold or the owner passesaway. There will also be a grant com-ponent for those low income seniorswho dont qualify. Protections for se-niors on the work being done and can-celation of contracts are also included

in the bill. The program is expectedhelp about 260,000 Alberta seniorsthroughout the province.
