Location: Edinburgh Client: The Royal College of SurgeonsValue: £250k

The contract involved the conversion of back of house office areas and existing bedrooms into a new Cocktail Bar area, the refurbishment of the Kitchen and Restaurant and formation of a new Hotel Reception facility. The works were undertaken whilst this premier city centre hotel remained fully operational throughout the entire contract. Careful planning and phasing of the works and effective communication with the client were critical in the successful delivery of the project. The Bar & Servery Counters and the Reception Desk were the key features of this project and their quality was critical in ensuring the project achieved the client and designers desired project intent. SJS provided added value by engineering the design of these bespoke manufactured joinery items and proposed an alternative product for the main finish material which provided better sharper detailing which the architect desired with the benefit of a cost saving. The project was successfully completed within the very tight and challenging contract timescale with client satisfaction in both the execution of the works and the finished product.

Project: Henry Prais Language Suite Refurbishment Location: EdinburghValue: £650k

The contract involved the complete strip out and refurbishment of the Language Suite comprising 3No Interpretation Suites, 1No Language Lab, 1No Self Study Facility and upgrading of corridors and associated stairs, to produce state of the art learning facilities with some of the most advanced communication technology in the world. The remainder of the building was fully operational throughout the contract, with all IT and building services being maintained throughout.

This small project involved the manufacture and installation of a high quality display case with associated lighting for Swiss Watch manufacturer Audemars Piguet, along with the relocation and alterations to existing display cases.

SJS were delighted to be involved in this prestigious refurbishment project for one of the countries most historic buildings. We carried out the manufactured joinery package for the design, manufacture and installation of various bespoke joinery items including; the Main Reception Desk, Internet Workstations, Bench Seating and a specialist Portable Exhibition Desk. These items were constructed from a variety of materials ranging from traditional timber to modern solid surfaces. The whole contract from award, through design, manufacture and installation was delivered in just under six weeks in order to meet the tight programme timescale and enable the Museum to re-open to the public on the scheduled grand opening date.

This refurbishment contract at Dollar Academy transformed the existing gym into a 6th Form Computer Study and Recreational Area. SJS designed, manufactured and installed the soundproof mezzanine computer study pod, fitting this area out with profiled IT work stations incorporating Staron solid surfacing. Two moveable walls housing plasma screens were incorporated within the construction of the computer pod to create a flexible recreational area below. These moveable walls allow the large open plan area to be divided into 3 separate areas providing a games, TV and recreational seating area. Maximisation of all available space was cleverly achieved by the inclusion of built-in storage units under the computer study pod access stair along with functional bench seating and tables, all of which were manufactured and installed by SJS.

SJS were appointed as package contractor for the joinery fit-out package at Aviva’s new call centre in Bishopbriggs. The joinery package comprised huge feature walls panelled in Bamboo Timber that ran along the main internal street. The main open plan call centre to the rear of the building had timber and glass clad pods for meetings and break-out sessions. The mezzanine level that over looks the call centre has two large meeting rooms, again clad with Bamboo timber. SJS also carried out additional joinery work in the restaurant area on the ground floor.

SJS were involved in this office fitout project with many interesting and challenging design features, which all combined to create a modern and vibrant office facility. SJS mainly carried out the manufactured joinery package providing a variety of items including vending areas, media walls and touchdown stations, a hospitality station, storage units, wall panelling, bench seating booths and cleverly designed fin wall structures which provided screening to office areas. One of the greatest challenges on this project was the very complex and intricate reception desk. The finished product along with the adjacent feature storage wall provides a highly visual focal point for all visitors and staff.

SJS were appointed to deliver bespoke manufactured joinery during the refurbishment for Royal London at their offices in North St David’s Street, Edinburgh. The works within the reception area included the provision of a new bespoke manufactured desk and walnut panelling. The main office level was partitioned along its length with a curved feature wall providing staff break-out and meeting areas. Meeting rooms and high specification presentation suites were also incorporated. The open plan staff restaurant situated on the ground floor provided a modern and spacious environment for the staff. This project was another example of SJS delivering a fast track, challenging project of high quality in a city centre location.

SJS were appointed as a contractor for this Office refurbishment project within Edinburgh’s New Town. The purpose of the refurbishment was to increase the buildings appeal to potential new tenants. The entrance hall and staircase underwent a major refurbishment. The staircase is finished with light limestone tiles with brushed stainless steel handrail finishing to the edge of the frameless glass balustrade. The entrance hall and each landing has been given a light and airy feel with the addition of light maple wall panelling.

Location: Talbot Rice Gallery, EdinburghValue: £22k (SJS manufactured joinery)

The historical significance of the Charles Darwin Exhibition meant that the quality of this temporary manufactured display feature was critical to ensure the exhibition did justice to Charles Darwin and what he achieved during his life. SJS manufactured and installed a 3m high by 16m long freestanding elliptical wall of modular construction using composite aluminium panels along with display cases and wall & floor mounted display plinths. To ensure the quality of the finished product and to reduce installation time and therefore minimise disruption to the University’s key facility, the complete display was manufactured and erected in our workshop, dismantled, transported to site where it only took two days to install. The whole process of design, manufacture and installation was completed within a 4 week period.

As the only new build, full scale concert hall built in Scotland since 1990, Perth Concert Hall was described as a building “rich in history and alive with a new energy” and arguably one of Scotland’s most significant buildings in recent years. SJS were successful in a tendering process that valued quality and programme delivery as importantly as cost. Having demonstrated ability to deliver on both criteria, this project became one of the highest quality joinery projects the company has ever undertaken. SJS were involved in the delivery of the 1200 seat Ganochy Auditorium concert hall.

On this project we were asked to fit-out Aegon UKs visitor reception and staff entrance facilities. SJS were responsible for the manufacture of a custom-built seating area and a re-branded reception desk. The desk incorporated new materials with rich textures to reflect the new brand and to relate the space to the visitor’s reception area. The new location and presentation of the reception desk focuses on hospitality. The design utilised Walnut doors to create a visual connection from the reception through to the conference room. The new reception compliments the new executive suite with the additional glazing system and feature lighting further adding to the dynamics of the space.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards Museum situated within the grounds of Edinburgh Castle gave SJS the opportunity to deliver a project within arguably the most historical location in Edinburgh. The works included bespoke manufacture of display cases and the interior fit out including partitions and finishings. Providing various logistical challenges in terms of site deliveries and working in confined spaces along with the important conservational restrictions. It is a testament to SJS’s performance and the overall successful outcome of the project that it received a Royal opening from Her Majesty the Queen.

SJS were involved in the Fitout and refurbishment contract of the entire former Bank of England building for law firm St Phillips Chambers which led to the premises being described as ‘bold, modern and unashamedly different’.The interior space provides multimedia presentation, video conferencing, seminar facilities, arbitration rooms and a first-class library. The focal point of the project was the conversion of an existing light well into an atria housing the reception area complete with modern reception desk, furniture and panelling all supplied and installed by SJS.
